Sad that Siskel missed Punch-Drunk Love. He had some pointed faith about Sandler playing sincere. Ebert issued a sort of mea culpa in his Punch Drunk Love review and said he would revisit Sandler's performances with a different eye.

The Wedding Singer made me realize that almost all Adam Sandler movies were the same.
They're all hilarious films when you're high with friends, but soon realize it's the same character doing the same stuff over and over.
I love Sandler's comedy albums, but he's Jerry Lewis. Most of his films are indistinguishable.

i cant stand Adam Sandler comedies, but the wedding singer is the one single one that i can stand, its still not a great film or anything though but i think its enjoyably dumb. that said EVERY single one of his comedies is the same thing, he is some super nice guy that is just really shy or straight up half witted and just gets walked all over, then he gets really mad and loud and stands up for himself and fights back. every damn one of them.

@@newwavepop yes, ‘Spanglish’ is a comedy, from the director of ‘Broadcast News’ and ‘As Good As It Gets.’ But I wouldn’t call it an Adam Sandler comedy, per se. It’s not in the same vein as ‘Billy Madison’ or ‘Happy Gilmore,’ etc. It’s also not necessarily a laugh-out-loud comedy.

I feel the same way with Adam's overall resume. He plays a lot of crude, self-absorbed, obnoxious jackasses. I can't find any humor nor amusement in such a repulsive character type.
That said, _The Wedding Singer_ is one of few Adam Sandler movies I sincerely enjoy. It helps a great deal that it's set in the '80s; gives the movie a lot of charm.

I like that Siskel was beginning to see the potential Adam Sandler had as a movie star with The Wedding Singer. He liked Sandler in the movie but just didnt like the script which was a respectable opinion. He defends Sandler here over Ebert which means he knew better things were to come for the actor. Although Siskel disliked The Waterboy which followed right after he sadly missed out on better Sandler movies before his passing. Even Ebert warmed up to Sandler in following years sad that Siskel missed out on those better movies.

For me The Borrowers having just rewatched it is almost like Honey I Shrunk the Kids meets Home Alone. Not bad but with so many movies in those franchises I rolled my eyes a few times having seen it all before. Still some performances are good, the set designs are impressive and as a kids movie from the 90’s there was and still is way worse to choose from.

Ok for starters The wedding singer is a Certified Classic ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Leo should have won for best actor for Titanic. Amistad should have went head up against the world's largest and best movie of all time at that time. For brilliant portrayal of the middle passage.

Ummm...the Wedding Singer was enjoyable...a Classic? No
Titanic was a great popcorn movie, but that's it, the acting was good..but that's it
Amistad was a good movie..but just like his directing of the Color Purple...Steven Spielberg is out of his depth ..Mr Hounsou and Mr Hopkins were fantastic
The rest ...meh .. if you see this movie alongside The Color Purple
And you watch Beloved and 12 Years a Slave ..you can see why those latter movies are far better than his

@@DrVVVinK Leo isn't great in most movies. He won Oscars for The Revenant and I think that was actually justified, since he turned in a truly great physical performance, where he didn't get asked to do too much verbally. He's always been a good physical performer, you could tell as early as Gilbert Grapes, but in "normal" roles he always overacts and tries too hard. Leo needs to take up more supporting roles and play the villain or other scene chewing characters like he did in Django Unchained. At least he gets to do his overacting properly.

Sphere has some trouble with length and pacing while struggling to get the story in because it's coming from a novel, but it's not really supposed to be a special effects showcase. it's very disingenuous knocking it because Queen Latifa dies first. A) that's the story and what happens in the book B) [SPOILER] Samuel Jackson is the one who figures out how to save the survivors. sometimes i wish they left their white guilt at home.

The Wedding Singer was great up until the cornball ending. It was the first time Sandler was actually playing a character in a semi-realistic, slice of life movie. It wore its nostalgia on its sleeve, but that's the appeal of the movie.
