    that was not a person thermite welding near the end, it was the signal maintainer putting copper wire across the joints to ensure continuity in the rail. I work on BNSF MOW and this is a simple routine rail replacement, the thermite crew probably showed up later to do the actual welding.

    I did trainspotting back in Dec. 2012. Stayed at the Cresson Inn, B&B. I sat in my truck one snowy day there at the little white building at Carney's Crossing. I also remember a Casandra's Crossing, nearby. The bridge over the tracks was COLD! I recall it hardly snowed at all in Altoona. BTW, the RR museum in Altoona needed work. Lot of exhibits did not even work.

    Usually when the rail breaks like that; in a ballasted crib, most times a welding gang will show up, trim the defected areas of the rail and weld it together.

    @isilder I was a Trackman-Thermite Welder on the Canadian National Railway... familiar with thermite butt-welding continuous welded rail (CWR). My question was to what purpose. Someone suggested it amounted to a tack-weld to provide an added assurance similar to a lock-washer. Cheers!

    • @coldblue9mm
      @coldblue9mm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Grogan It was the signal maintainer applying his bond wire to the outside of the head of the rail. It is a mini thermite process to do it.

    It depends on the railroad company, BNSF in the west US requires that a vest be worn, but most times all the trains know that construction or repair is at that mile marker through radio and dispatchers, so they slow down dramatically for safety and activate all the bells and whistles to be heard by the construction crew.

    Man nice vid. I still miss the old conrails/conrail qualitys they looked nice with the NS trains, but most of them were either repainted by other railroads or scrapped into another locomotive. The only conrail I know of now is the NS heritage 8098. Atleast Some NS and CSX have some engines with the original Conrail RS3L. All and all nice video

  • @bertbert14
    @bertbert14  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @robertgift Thanks Robert,
    The rail was not bent when delivered and placed on the track.
    The mow crew replaced it using muscles to fit the slight curve of probadly 1%or 2% at most curve. The way I understand it, they used the gas heater on the rail to "relax" the rail and hold it in the new curved position, and to take the tension off of it so it would not want to straighten back out again..Then they sealed the nuts to the bolts with some thermite, much better than a lock washer. --lol--Doug

    • @coldblue9mm
      @coldblue9mm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Obert No dude, we don't use heat to bend rail to fit the curvature. Rail is very flexible. We only use heat to expand it (or use hydraulic rail pullers) to take out any extra rail that may have been added on a cold day. I've been on crews where we lay rail on high degree curves and the rail bends on it's own and fits in the tie plates just fine.

    @1jpenev Most rail companies have engines that flash their lights at crossings or railroad workers as a warning. It's usually standard operating procedures to do that or mandatory on some rail companies.

  • @otef434
    @otef434 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where was the emergency? Anywho, broken rails disturb track circuits for wayside signals, cab signals, or crossing devices. Usually a malfunction is the indication. Once the offending circuit has been found, you either walk, drive, or highrail that segment and visually inspect. It's not that hard to spot. The repair can be anything between a set of joint bars, or as they did in the video, replace a segment of rail.

  • @Engineer9736

    As far as I've seen track laying videos, the rails is like spaghetti. They probably first fasten one side of the track, take the crane and drag the other end into the curve. The crossbeams underneath the rail have notches in them wherein the rail exactly fits. So once down, everything sits on the right place. But don't nail me down onto this, it's only from what I've seen on the internet ;)

    the Railway workers was supposed to be wearing a safety vest on them while working on any working & running lines & they sre supposed to have a safety officer with them as well hand signalling the trains to let the train crews know that that section is cleared of any workers

    • @coldblue9mm
      @coldblue9mm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      trainluva Check the date on this video. This was before safety vests became a requirement on US railroads. They had protection on the track they were on. The trains on the other tracks were far enough away to not be a hazard to the workers. Not sure what your complaining about.

    don't know why they needed a whole rail section for a tiny gap?
    couldn't they size it, drop in a wedge like filler, then do their weld melting on it?
    also like how there's always five six guys and 1 or 2 actually working.
    I worked as a lineman for ConRail 50 years ago and remember the same thing. couple guys working, the rest telling stories and hanging out. I would like to use the hammer and drive high spikes down and separate ahead to actually make the day go quicker. It was summer and on the rails it must of been 120 degrees. Plus at the jersey shore, the night life was happening,.

    @trainluva How do you know what the safety rules regarding vests are for this railroad? How do you know there wasn't a "safety officer" or "foreman" or whatever the terminology on site?
    This is why I despise a certain small portion of railfans out there. They see a video or receive a tiny bit of information and the next thing you know they are know-it-all second guessers.

    • @coldblue9mm
      @coldblue9mm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Smith Not sure what your comment is supposed to mean. Railroaders are very highly trained, so how does wearing a high visibility vest help someone from doing something stupid? My understanding is the reason we had to wear vests is so we became more visible to train crews so they might start sounding their horn earlier. Even with all the protection in place, and all the training, people do make mistakes. It doesn't mean they're stupid. It's a very unforgiving environment. Did you railroad? If so, why do you think railroaders now are stupid? What are you comparing them to? I'd say right now, the average railroader is more aware than they ever were about safety at any time in history.
