I like how the dudes on the upper part go "Every man for his damn self" and run in every direction as soon as the bike starts rolling down. Chaotic. I love it
You’ll notice 2 things about those can truly ride: they don’t sit on the seat; they don’t put their feet down. Why? They’re able to properly balance the bike underneath themselves and are “ahead” of what’s happening with the bike and in the terrain. Every other rider is just coping with what’s already going on.
Still thinking you can choose to not ride a 3 meter deathbmachine up a hill that will kick up in the air and land on you. But that is just my take. Whatever people enjoy.
Back in my teens, I was doing this on my quad (Suzuki Quadracer 250). Much smaller hill but just as steep. One run my front wheels came up, and I veered to the side of the path where a big hole was. Looped out fully and bailed off the back. Once I rolled to the bottom of the hill, I started to get up on my hands and knees. My quad did a full flip down the hill and landed square on top of me! Glad I had on full race gear, cracked my helmet and put a huge gash from a bolt into the back of my chest protector. I was ok, just knocked the wind out of me. Never rode without gear ever!
Bravo !
I love watching hill climbs. These guys watch failure after failure after failure and then just be like, yeah, I can make it, and full send it. Then every once in a great while someone not only does make it, but makes it look easy when they do it.
problem is, they don't seem to full send it. the common denominator here for those who make it to the top, or close to it, is speed and momentum. once you lose your momentum, getting traction again on a steep hill is impossible because the bike just flips. i noticed this right away, but what's puzzling is that so many guys still tried to approach it slow even on the initial incline.
This is so enjoyable to watch!👀👍🏼 Some friends and myself had dirt bikes back 45 years ago. We climbed shale and silt mounds made from huge cranes that did the strip mining in eastern Pennsylvania! It was so much fun. Until one of us would break down…. We had to work together to get whoever’s bike broke down back up and running to go do it again! Great memories! Thank you much! I’m wondering what it would have been like if we had these beasts to ride? I thought the TT500 was bad with scooped tires! Never seen anything like this!✌🏼
So this might be a silly question, but presumably after every race the hill is progressively more and more messed up and the ruts are deeper and deeper. Is any attempt made to repair the damage between races or is there just going to be a point where things are too messed up to be climbed and they need to pick a new spot?
Good question, short answer is no. Nothing is done. Look up the Andler hill climb. It's documented on YT since early 2010s. It was a dirt hill then. It's just rocks now, cool to see the transition over the years after all the hill climbs ate the side of the hilll away.
yeah, I think the ruts and loose top soil would make things worse as it's being used more. Ruts would give more traction, but you can't really balance if you're stuck in a rut.
I hope theres a prize for those who landed and stayed on their feet. Of those who made it, I assume it then comes down to time. Looks like a great sport. As a photographer I know how hard it is to show just how steep a hill can be.
199 was there comic relief 😂 he fly down the hill after trying to save another guys bike and then blows an extinguisher in everyone’s face trying to put out a bike fire that was probably already out😂
This video truly captures the essence of hill climbing and the sheer determination of the participants. Watching the athletes tackle those steep inclines and challenging obstacles is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. It’s amazing to see how they push themselves to their limits, especially when faced with a tough climb like Arette. I noticed how some riders seemed to have a technique that gave them an edge, particularly in managing their speed and momentum. I wonder if certain strategies could be shared among participants to help them improve. The community aspect of these events is fantastic, with everyone cheering each other on. It makes me think about how much teamwork plays a role, even in what seems like an individual sport.
I'm about 10 miles from the devils staircase, which is this weekend. I don't know where this is and it's a different hill, but a lot of these guys look like it's their first time on a motorcycle compared to here.
Raise the foot pegs 30cm? Drop the handle bars forward? These bikes have evolved to meet this hill, yearly. Such amazingly specialized machines! I think raising the footpegs or addng a second pair for the top half of the climb could result in more full pulls. Supercrossers can get their helmet near the front fender sometimes when going vertical. Mabye drop the handlebars like a crotch rocket's bars. Or reverse ape-hanges from a chopper? Inspired by, but purpose built for this beastly hill. I love watching this hill climb year after year. I think if they rode more like jockeys on race horses. Or something. Surely, I've solved the problem. They can change the pegs at the dealer, right?
No it's not. Three things needed to succeed: taking the best line, jumping over the steepest sections which is really what's throwing people off, lot's of experience of the same level of challenge and a bit of luck. Nothing to do with the bike design.
