Dial in your espresso faster by understanding what elements change the dial in settings, then you can estimate a starting point that gets you to good espresso faster. The 2 rules I talk about in this video have helped me quit wasting expensive coffee beans and generally get to great espresso within 2 or 3 shots! Be sure to check out the Brew Ledger as it teaches you how to dial in more quickly, and gives you a space to keep your settings so you don't forget.

@@homecafecharlie thanks for the video. I’m backing the kickstarter for the new flair go, which looks to be the perfect travel lever machine. It will replace my picopresso.

@@homecafecharlieTry out a picopresso! Not as good as flair 58 obviously but serious espresso even for backpacking level portability.

Shame you didn't bring the group heater for Flair 58+. You have a bit more consistent temps with it plugged in

Thank you for this video. For the whole video, I was wondering about the ledger! Watched your video about the ledger and funded. Hope it works out.

if you break a bean or two on a hard surface to gauge the coffee's hardness, you can skip this "calculations" about roast level and altitude- which isn't a guranteed peice of info on coffee bags. the harder the bean is to crack, the denser, and thee finer you willl grind. This may take a bit more practice but it's much more accurate than just using the info on the bag alone.

that's a great video, thanks for that in advance. I'll try this technique when I got my new pack of coffee soon. Any recommendations for the ones (like me) who have a great grinder such as eureka mignon specialita but also have a very entry level machine like delonghi dedica? Most of the time I'm having problems on dialing in because of the performance of my machine basically. Sometimes even if I change the grind size on my grinder (from step 2 to 1 e.g.,) my machine doesn't offer the difference in the shot I was hoping to get. I can't afford to buy a finer machine like lelit mara or bianca but I'm sometimes tired of getting inconsistent shots that make me feel bad.

Very interesting process. Curious, how many cups you drink per day? Also what temperature are you using for most of your expresso shot? Thx! 😊

Usually 94 degrees plus or minus 3, and maybe only 2-3 cups per day! I know, it's not enough haha

Totally disagree about the common “espresso snob” wisdom of milk making any half good shot taste fine, I taste very subtle differences though milk no problem

For sure you can taste it, but the milk makes it drinkable. Without it a sour espresso can ruin your day haha
