      @binary132 so on my brother's truck he lost 1 Injector like 5 years ago ananthats all. On my truck I lost 2 injectors and realized I had a failing fuel pump that was dropping to 24psi under minimal load. I upgraded my fuel system replaced all my injectors and haven't had an injector issue since. Most people experiencing repeat injector failure typically have a fuel pump issue they haven't resolved yet has been my experience.

      What did you end up getting? The main reason 05s and up are bit nicer is really suspension related the engine itself are both kind of the same. Both have issues both have solutions. Both blow head gaskets at about the same rate. Swapping out for 7.3 parts is kind of a silly idea. One of the big upgrades to the 6.0 was increased capacity in the cooling system. I love 7.3s don't get me wrong but many people for cheap upgrades were putting 6.0 parts on 7.3 like the intercooler. Though that's really the only one I'm aware of maybe a trans cooler?

    Most Powerstroke mechanics say 05-07 are the best years for the 6.0. Not only is the truck body and suspension modern, the engine is slightly different to fix the issues the 03-04 Powerstrokes had. A Bulletproofed or completely stock 05-07 6.0 is actually a good truck.

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Suspension is truly the only mechanical reason to buy an 05 and up 6.0. Now I do prefer the newer oil rails, but later years are more likely to leak on the high pressure oil system than early years. The pump is more reliable. People do tend to state they're more reliable but they have little to nothing to back it up

    I have a 2003 6.0 powerstroke. My stepson has a 2005 6.0. The only thing that is bad on my truck that keeps going out is the icp sensor. But my stepsons 05 6.0 with a tune and sinister everything plus the coil suspension is nothing but garbage. My truck before I bought it was used for work. An older man owned it and had a roofing company and he used this truck to tow every day. In this Texas heat. The only upgrades I have done to my truck is mishimoto Inter cooler pipes, cold air intake, blue spring upgrade and an 05 6.0 powerstroke intake elbow which I grabbed of my step sons truck because he bought a sinister one. I have 210k miles on stock oil cooler, stock head bolts stock egr. Yes my egr is still there. And my truck is dead nuts realignment thus far. I use it hard but give it good oil. I’ll make a video of it soon and post it. And as far as suspension goes, I prefer the leaf spring front end. I like stiff suspension. Much more heavier duty in my opinion. From my experience the 03 is reliable if left alone with no tune.

    I prefer the 05 -07's, but the 03's have some great features the others do not. The 03 has a turbo with a 10 blade turbine wheel and a 59mm compressor wheel. The 04's up began shrinking the turbos and by 05 they had a 13 blade turbine wheel and a 56mm compressor wheel. The 03 also has more aggressive camshaft specs and FICM tuning than the 04 up. If you can get an 03, the turbo and the cam make them very strong with some updating (egr delete, tuning, exhaust). You mentioned the 03 rocker arms with the metal clips. That is definitely the way to go if you can get a set. Ford no longer offers them, you will just have to buy them off an 03. If the plastic clip breaks, your rocker are will come off the pedestal leading to a catastrophic failure.

    There are several differences in the 18mm and 20mm heads. There were 4 casting revisions to the 18mm heads and one final revision where it received the 20mm heads also known as commonized heads. The 20mm has a thicker deck over bore which substantially reduced cracking they are known for. They also relocated the injector hold down slightly to again reduce the amount of cracking from the injector cup areas. A 20mm casted head is a superior design. To me the best is a 03’ motor with 20mm converted heads using the older rocker box and more reliable log style HPO setup.

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      20mm heads still are pretty common for issues overall. for factory heads if someone had the valve seat machined out and had proper pressed in valve seats though I would think that is a big upgrade, along with O ring heads. If there wasnt solid aftermarket options I would agree though except I would want the valve job done still.

    I just picked up a mid 03 and it's turning out to be a decent truck, but definitely expensive compared to my previous Cummins. It's had previous warranty work done to it by Ford a few years ago(new heads, head gaskets, EGR cooler, oil cooler, HPOP, new turbo, and a few other parts) So far I've done an EGR delete, upgraded oil cooler with viton seals throughout, new fuel/oil caps, motorcraft filters, fresh fluids, coolant filter, coolant cap, fleet belt, new pulleys, tensioner, 7.3 fan clutch, aluminum radiator, new hoses, cold air intake, cometic valve cover gaskets, and fuel bowl seals w/regulator and blue spring upgrade. It currently has a deleted cat and muffler, but I will eventually do a full 4" straight pipe exhaust. I won't ever tune it as I want it to live a long, happy, stress-free life. Thanks for the great information and I'm definitely subscribed!

    I have an 05 f350 dually. I bought it in 2015 with 173,000 miles on it, knowing absolutely nothing about the 6.0 and it's bad rap. Shortly after I bought out the egr cooler crapped out. I got rid of that stupid egr cooler, truck ran great for 5000 miles, then the ficm power board went, I changed out the board, easy fix. Did all the mods short of head gaskets and studs, even a new oil cooler. The head gaskets had a small leak but it only became apparent when towing. I drove it that way for at least a year. Then I got a high pressure oil leak somewhere and the truck wouldn't start when hot. It was time. Decided to do a cab off head gasket job in my shop and replaced the stc fitting, stand pipes and dummy plugs. Had the heads cut at the local machine shop, they only took off.002" to get them flat, same valves, same injectors, and I also got rid of the cat while it was so easy to reach from up top. Installed some new belts and hoses and she's purring nice. I wish I'd had the Funds to relocate the oil cooler, but I didn't do there's that. She has 217,000 miles on her now. I'm hoping to get another 200,000 out of her without to much fuss. I paid 17,000 for the truck in 2015 which was a good deal, I thought.It was a really clean truck and still is. I know every inch of that truck now. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one for the right price.

EVERY later year 6.0 we have.. have ALL had the o rings fail.. the modular stand pipes was a TERRIBLE idea. I have an early style 6.0 powerstroke. I love the truck and the oil system tends to not fail. The pumps do but they have since updated the housing to typically not be an issue anymore. That said I would love to have the later style rails as those trucks when working correctly tend to just run smoother than the early styles, and for the most part the updated parts to fix the issues seem to be working pretty well.

    Obviously like you said they all have their issues but I have always been told the late model trucks are overall better than the early ones by my dad who has worked on many 6.0's in his career. In my opinion they all require about the same amount of work and cost to get them to be reliable and/or less prone to issues so just depends on what you want.
    Also when it comes to the front end I personally like the late model look over the one that was on the new body 7.3 and early 6.0

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I 100% prefer the later style front ends. I wish at the time I purchased my truck I could have bought an 05-07. I think as the years went on some mechanics started to figure out how the system worked and were able to perform better repairs. Such as realizing by the time the egr cooler failed the oil cooler was already toast. I do think every mechanic has their preferred style to work on. Truthfully I wish I could have the hybrid engine that has parts from late and early.

In the shop now. I had a 250 and as soon as it started having problems I sold it and never regretted the decision. We are trying to figure out what to do to my dads truck because it is never dependable enough to go anywhere with it. This time it just shut off as it was driving down the road. it would crank back up idle but run rough when over idle. Im telling him to sell it ASAp but he won't get anything for it as is. Any advise? Its hard to find a mechanic that knows what they are doing with a 6.0

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey I am happy to help man. The 6.0 is a great engine you really just need someone that understands them. So if I understand correctly the truck runs rough and shuts off when the truck is warmed up? Do you have the ability to read engine information? If not there are cheap ways to do it. Most of the running rough and no start issues can be found through reading the following parameters. Injection control pressure, injector pressure regulator, fuel injector control module voltage, battery voltage, and sync, cam/crank sync,
      I'll refer to those in the abbreviated form, icp, ipr, ficm. Basically I need to know those numbers while cranking engine over, idle both cold and hot.
      For things to read information torque pro for android is like 5 bucks plus a blue tooth obd2 adapter which I'll get you a link for. Forscan I believe is for both android and apple and will he helpful as well

    DO NOT OVER BOOST A STOCK 6.0 you will blow head gaskets.
    change oil and filters every 8500 miles
    keep the batteries charged
    Pour 1 Quart of Auto Transmission Fluid into your fuel every other tank full.
    Oh keep the Body and Frame clean and treat both frame and undercarriage with an anti corrosion coating. They won't burn out before they RUST.....
    03- F350 , 04 F-250 , 05 Excursion , 05 Excursion
    NOTE: There is not 1 diesel engine on the market that is issue free....They all have their ISSUES.

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree here. I will say I try to be more in the 5-6,000 mile oil and filter change, and I use archoil in my fuel. I ran a 40hp tow tune for over 100k miles on my 6.0 it did eventually cracked a cylinder head but the truck had over 180k miles at that point with lots of towing and primarily a daily driver. I agree can't run a race tune on a stock 6.0 and not expect to break something. I also agree all diesels have their issues they are high performance engines stuff will break or you will have issues here and there. Thanks for the great comment man

    Just bought my first 6.0 powerstroke. I've had many 7.3's but this is my first 6.0.
    It's a 2006 Ford F-350 super duty XL crew cab rear wheel drive wish it was four wheel drive. I picked it up for $1,050. I have changed the water pump cuz the bearings were squealing a bit and changed out the hose connected to the map sensor cuz when I pick the truck up it was gutless and the turbo wouldn't spool up so I looked into it and took a look at the map sensor hose and noticed there was a crack in it so I changed it out and it corrected my issue with that having low power and the turbo not spooling up. I've still got to change out an idler pulley that has a bad bearing and I'm getting a code of P0273 for the cylinder 5 injector circuit low but not sure if it's just an intermittent things or what because it does seem to run pretty well now that I change that hose out going to the map sensor. I do also have a code of P0401 which says EGR flow insufficient detected but it doesn't seem like there's a problem with the EGR as it seems to run fine and I don't have any white smoke at all. I'll probably pull the EGR valve and clean it anyway. The last thing I've got on it is a bad wheel speed sensor on the front passenger side so I'll be changing that as well.
    Some of these issues may have been related to the bad hose which was connected to the map sensor however I'm not sure as I don't have experience with the 6.0. All the codes were pulled prior to the swap out of that hose. I reset the check engine light when replacing the hose and it did come back on however I haven't run the codes again to see what they show up as. Wish me luck.
    Heck for only paying $1,050 I could still put a few thousand dollars into it and be fine.

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man sounds like you got a steal on that truck! Heck if you wanted to do a 4wd swap it wouldnt take a whole lot to get it done if you went with a manual transfer case. All you do is swap tail housings on the transmission front axle and front driveshaft. It's a few more parts than that but probably for 2 grand you would have what you need. Anyway, the low circuit to your injector could be a few things. I would first give the connections in the back of the ficm a good press in and make sure they are tight. In my experience low circuit codes tend to stem from the ficm or the ficm wiring harness. So that is where I would check. The egr insufficient flow very well could be from a blocked off egr cooler. The previous owner may have welded it shut. Wont hurt anything if it is. However I would make an attempt at verifying that that is what's going on. I have never seen a 6.0 egr cooler block up with soot but it could happen.

    • @rustyaxelrod
      @rustyaxelrod 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      P0401- EGR low flow is tripped when the EGR is commanded open with no corresponding rise in temperature from IAT2. If the valve isn’t installed and working or the EGR cooler is deleted or blocked you will get this code also. IAT2 can have an issue of getting really sooted up and getting slow to respond. Could just need cleaning.

Everything else stock. Now I'm worried about the oil cooler the oil temp is about 10 degrees higher than the coolant without towing with 50 degrees outside temp I'm thinking with summer weather and towing that it would get to hot and blow the egr cooler, heads or the oil cooler?

      I would check the valley of the engine. Uou can also check the back of the engine from underneath to see if it is coming from the hood. Next inspect valve covers and see if it is leaking from the. AND down the engine. Last the bed plate and oil pan. Basically try and see how high on the engine it is. Could be a hpop cover that is leaking or could be bedplate or oil pan

    What are the turbo differences

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there are 2 different compressor sides. The early years had a larger compressor wheel it was 59mm then the later style 05 turbos had a smaller 56mm wheel. On the turbine side the 03 and early 04s came with the larger 10 blade wheel that had a different vane profile and height than the later years. In late 04 they switched to a 13 blade wheel that had the same diameter inducer and exducer, but it wasn't as tall. Finally the late turbos had a smaller turbine wheel but kept the 13 blade wheel

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am always in favor of deleting if able to for "off road" use of course lol. But in all honesty from a reliability/power stand point there is little to no benefit to deleting provided there is an upgrade egr cooler in there that will stand up to the abuse these trucks see. Now that being said the factory one can be a weak link. If you run one I would just upgrade it and that will work very well.
