  • Which 6.0 powerstroke year is best? In this video we are going to talk about what Powerstroke year is best to buy. The 6.0 powerstroke has been plagued with many issues. Now I have heard numerous things online about which year is best, but the truth is that many of the "fixes" ended up initially causing more issues before there were upgraded parts that eventually fixed the "fixes" As for engines there are 03-early 04, and in late 04 there were engine changes to the newer designs. there were small upgrades made throughout the engines productions like I talk about in the video. (dowel pins) We have both engine types on the truck. We have both 6.0 Powerstrokes on the channel with a built early 6.0 powerstrokes. The other truck is a late 04 ford 6.0 powerstroke. The 6.0 Powerstroke issues can all be fixed regardless of year. It really depends on which 6.0 powerstroke problems you want to fix really. The high pressure oil leaks. The issues with 6.0 powerstroke are different in each early and late.
    So which 6.0 powerstroke year is best? That is up to you to decide.
    The ford 6.0 powerstroke is a great engine to have. Once you have a built 6.0 powerstroke you will change your mind about the ford 6.0 powerstroke! what 6.0 powerstroke issues have you had? Like stated all of the 6.0 powerstroke problems are easy to fix.

    Most Powerstroke mechanics say 05-07 are the best years for the 6.0. Not only is the truck body and suspension modern, the engine is slightly different to fix the issues the 03-04 Powerstrokes had. A Bulletproofed or completely stock 05-07 6.0 is actually a good truck.

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Suspension is truly the only mechanical reason to buy an 05 and up 6.0. Now I do prefer the newer oil rails, but later years are more likely to leak on the high pressure oil system than early years. The pump is more reliable. People do tend to state they're more reliable but they have little to nothing to back it up

    I have 7 of these and one 7.3.. I've found the earlier 6.0's have a similar style oil feed system and never really fails.. not one of our early ones have failed including the 7.3. EVERY later year 6.0 we have.. have ALL had the o rings fail.. the modular stand pipes was a TERRIBLE idea. Built a few blocks up using the older style stand pipes and absolutely no issues. 👍🏼 everything deleted and external oil coolers and filters etc etc etc

      I have an early style 6.0 powerstroke. I love the truck and the oil system tends to not fail. The pumps do but they have since updated the housing to typically not be an issue anymore. That said I would love to have the later style rails as those trucks when working correctly tend to just run smoother than the early styles, and for the most part the updated parts to fix the issues seem to be working pretty well.

    I just picked up a mid 03 and it's turning out to be a decent truck, but definitely expensive compared to my previous Cummins. It's had previous warranty work done to it by Ford a few years ago(new heads, head gaskets, EGR cooler, oil cooler, HPOP, new turbo, and a few other parts) So far I've done an EGR delete, upgraded oil cooler with viton seals throughout, new fuel/oil caps, motorcraft filters, fresh fluids, coolant filter, coolant cap, fleet belt, new pulleys, tensioner, 7.3 fan clutch, aluminum radiator, new hoses, cold air intake, cometic valve cover gaskets, and fuel bowl seals w/regulator and blue spring upgrade. It currently has a deleted cat and muffler, but I will eventually do a full 4" straight pipe exhaust. I won't ever tune it as I want it to live a long, happy, stress-free life. Thanks for the great information and I'm definitely subscribed!

    I love the late models - but mainly just for the 20" factory wheels you can get. I took advantage of the misinformation about the early ones. Got a killer deal on an 03, bought some used 06 20" wheels, put studs, new HPOP, oil cooler and a mild tune. More planned, but it's been a great truck.

    There are several differences in the 18mm and 20mm heads. There were 4 casting revisions to the 18mm heads and one final revision where it received the 20mm heads also known as commonized heads. The 20mm has a thicker deck over bore which substantially reduced cracking they are known for. They also relocated the injector hold down slightly to again reduce the amount of cracking from the injector cup areas. A 20mm casted head is a superior design. To me the best is a 03’ motor with 20mm converted heads using the older rocker box and more reliable log style HPO setup.

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      20mm heads still are pretty common for issues overall. for factory heads if someone had the valve seat machined out and had proper pressed in valve seats though I would think that is a big upgrade, along with O ring heads. If there wasnt solid aftermarket options I would agree though except I would want the valve job done still.

    • @rustyaxelrod
      @rustyaxelrod 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tommy C- the oil cooler was updated but I’m not sure the updated one was ever used in production. It seems like it was 2010 or so when it was released. A couple of aftermarket companies made (make) a “heavy duty” oil cooler that had larger (and fewer) passages, the idea being it wouldn’t clog up as easily. Problem was they are not as efficient at cooling the oil so oil temp runs a little higher, making some people think they have a problem. The Ford update was the opposite, smaller passages and an extra row to cool the oil better and damn the clogging. If you buy a new oil cooler from Ford it will be the updated MAXFORCE unit. All of the original ones should be off the shelf by now.
      That would make your story true, just off a little on the timing.

      Well that is hard to say. While the 6.0 is a great engine some of the things can be expensive to fix. So I would hate to point you in the direction knowing there could be an expensive repair bill in your near future. Even basic maintenance is pretty expensive. However just sticking to engine and such the 7.3 may be what you wanna look at. Overall a cheaper truck to maintain in comparison. However both can be costly. I just want to be honest with you.

    I own several Ford diesel trucks 2 7.3s and a 6.0 but when I wanted to a truck to pull the RV cross country I never even considered a Ford.
    I want a vehicle when I get in it and turn the key I know it's going to start and I know it's not going to leave me stranded pulling a trailer that's.. why for me and my peace of mind and me Towing my trailer I picked Dodge with a Cummins motor and a manual transmission.

That said my 6.0 has never let me down. Sure it needed a big repair with a cracked cylinder head which sucked, but to act like a cummins never blows a head gasket lol please. Don't foget how until recently the transmissions have been trash until built. So there are 2 different compressor sides. The early years had a larger compressor wheel it was 59mm then the later style 05 turbos had a smaller 56mm wheel. On the turbine side the 03 and early 04s came with the larger 10 blade wheel that had a different vane profile and height than the later years. In late 04 they switched to a 13 blade wheel that had the same diameter inducer and exducer, but it wasn't as tall. Finally the late turbos had a smaller turbine wheel but kept the 13 blade wheel

      Most the holes should all be in the frame when we installed his track bar mount it went in fairly straight forward but it’s really the most difficult in my opinion because of some of the locations of the bolt holes u half to drill. As far as steering I’m not sure if the earlier 6.0s run the same steering boxes as the 05 up trucks or if you plan on swapping to the newer box. But we had to use a 1.5 ft per taper reamer on his factory pitman arm to except the larger tie rod end. Picked the reamer up on eBay for I think $70. It’s definitely a involved job but fully worth it in the end

      I feel 6.0s most times people ask way to much too. I mean I bought my truck 7 years ago for 22,000 with 73k on it. I see people asking 18 with 180k on them it's crazy. That said I politely disagree with you on the only advantage being price lol.

    • @six0bros

      I honestly feel they are all very similar each has a few different issues. Now the 05-07 suspension is not debatable. It is better

    No mention on the different cam profile from 03-04 to 05-07

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. However I do feel it is a very minimal change from year to year. Also the white truck is an early 04 so it has an 03 engine in it. You cannot tell a difference going from that to the newer cam. However the focus was to be primarily on reliability because that is what most people debate.

    My stock head bolt 04 F350 has been great. It has 19X,XXX and runs great with just an egr delete, 4in straight pipe and tune. Replace parts with OEM and you won't have any issues. Maintenance is KEY!

      @@brandonren1219 my brother in christ. The 6.0l rad is 2 inches taller and .45 inches wider. Why on gods green earth woudl you swap out a smaller rad....? As for headstuds youre also wrong. The headbolts are not raited to last under stock power. Youre also already in there for headgasket and egr you 100% should do headstufs.

    • @six0bros
      @six0bros  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What did you end up getting? The main reason 05s and up are bit nicer is really suspension related the engine itself are both kind of the same. Both have issues both have solutions. Both blow head gaskets at about the same rate. Swapping out for 7.3 parts is kind of a silly idea. One of the big upgrades to the 6.0 was increased capacity in the cooling system. I love 7.3s don't get me wrong but many people for cheap upgrades were putting 6.0 parts on 7.3 like the intercooler. Though that's really the only one I'm aware of maybe a trans cooler?

    I prefer the 05 -07's, but the 03's have some great features the others do not. The 03 has a turbo with a 10 blade turbine wheel and a 59mm compressor wheel. The 04's up began shrinking the turbos and by 05 they had a 13 blade turbine wheel and a 56mm compressor wheel. The 03 also has more aggressive camshaft specs and FICM tuning than the 04 up. If you can get an 03, the turbo and the cam make them very strong with some updating (egr delete, tuning, exhaust). You mentioned the 03 rocker arms with the metal clips. That is definitely the way to go if you can get a set. Ford no longer offers them, you will just have to buy them off an 03. If the plastic clip breaks, your rocker are will come off the pedestal leading to a catastrophic failure.

      You brought up some really good points I had not thought of for this video. The turbo is a good one. Very few people even know there was a slight difference to the 03 camshaft. I am with you though I really like the newer styling.

      Didn’t know about the cam but I have a very early 03 turbo. Its a screamer on 05+ trucks. Loudest turbo whistle Ive ever heard. No teenager in town can touch its whistle.

    The transmissions are really the only "bulletproof" part of the 6.0 super duties. If you could put those units behind a 6BT, you have a truck for a lifetime.
