Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Review - Pro and Con

- Lisa Gade reviews Samsung’s biggest flagship Android smartphone for 2017, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The phone is available on most carriers, and is one of the most expensive at list price (we talk about discount deals in this video, to reduce the pain). The Note 8 has the S Pen, a Wacom EMR active pen and a 6.3” Super AMOLED display running at 2960 x 1440 that supports HDR. It’s powered by the 2.35 GHz Snapdragon 835 with Adreno 530 graphics (Exynos 8895 overseas) with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage plus a microSD card slot.
The phone is IP68 water resistant, has WiFi 802.11ac with MU MIMO, Cat 16 LTE, NFC and Samsung Pay. It has a front 8MP camera and dual 12MP rear cameras with OIS- a main camera and a telephoto camera that can do bokeh effects. The Note 8 has a 3,300 mAh battery that supports adaptive fast charging and fast wireless charging.

I don't get how people can't appreciate the thoughtful features and the user experience samsung spends on. I just got my dad an iPhone 7 and I can't believe how the user experience is still the same from when I use to have an iPhone 4. I've been helping my dad set it up and the iphone hasn't changed much but it looks nice and bigger. Far as the user experience it is just the same steps of an ordinary smartphone. I think people don't appreciate the user experience and the detail samsung puts out. The special things this phone can do. The fact I can get something at the speed of a thought. The air command, edge panel, dual screen, translating, the dynamic note taking features, amazing camera/video and with those feature as well not to mention the amazing sensor just to put for an example.....and how these features are created and used by the user at the speed of a fingersnap.
I don't get how you never seem satisfied with the amount of time and the small detail samsung thinks about.
And the price is not increased for the reason you say that they may want to make it seem like a more high end phone.
That's silly.
It's an amazing job.
Reji Bae each to their own but IMO the features on the iPhone are far superior. They include iMessage, which is searchable and is on my Mac and iPad. The swipe back in apps, smooth and fast. Touch the top of the screen to fast scroll back to the top in apps, force touch is batter than hovering. Translation is easy with apps. Great updates, the s8 still hasn’t got 7.1 yet, nearly 9 months after release! Performance is far superior for intensive stuff. Left my iPhone overnight and only lost 1%. New file system means better storage. New video codec coming to reduce video size by around 40%. Accessories, I use a 5750 mah battery case that gives me about 5 days battery life, good luck getting one for HTC or Sony although there are some ugly s8 ones. Spend a lot of time on the phone and noise cancellation headphones powered by lightning mean I can speak to customers and clients as if I was in a quiet office environment. AirDrop is easy way to send files between devices. Handoff is great when I am working on multiple devices. Android is great as is Samsung, but some people use their phone for different stuff and iOS suits them far better. Cheers.

He Lisa, do you recommend getting the unlocked version of Note 8 from Samsung or a carrier version? I heard some features like wifi calling may not work with the unlocked version and not to mention they get updates later as well.

Another great review Lisa. Thank you very much. Could I recommend using Infinite Design and Painter for drawing? I have an iPad Pro 12.9 and a Samsung Tab S3 and the infinite apps are my go to for Android drawing.

Great review, thanks for this. Out of my price range, but hopefully in time to come. Seems like a great phone to do sketching on while on the move. Just a note about tilt support, there apps like Infinite Painter that have tilt support for quite a while already, before this note was released. The added it for the Galaxy Tab S3. To be honest I do find Infinite Painter, LayerPaint HD and especially Artflow very exciting to use, they offer a toolbox Procreate users can only dream of.

Lisa, I was wondering where did you get your information from as far as the incentive for having the Note 7? Because more than a few Samsung Representatives from there customer service line, and promotion Department told me you had to trade in a phone that is close to value of a S7, or Note 5 to get the $400. Just previously having the Note 7 wasn't good enough.

Is there a way to get the samsung notes to full screen when in landscape mode? Ive tried a demo unit in one of the samsung stores and i cant seem to figure out how to set the note in full screen. Ive tried to ask the sales people and they also cant figure it out...

Setting up my Unlocked Note 8 as I watch your vid. Finally put my Note 3 into retirement. Still going to look into the new Apple 8 and Pixel 2. I always keep 2 devices to swap from week to week. It's good to have options, and finally some real competition in the smartphone arena.
Nice review as always. I've ordered mine, black, for the first time, have always gone for gold in the past. In Turkey we might ve wait until week ending 25 September!! So I have to be patient. What comes around goes around I suppose. We got the Note7 before anyone in Europe or the US. Now we're waiting. Lol.

Infinite Painter is supporting Tilt for Spens since last year. It works very well and we try to improve it.
I am co-developing the app (most of the v6 new UI, much debugging, tool suggestions, new features research and development, etc) but not mentioned anywhere, for some weird reason that is not the place to analyse.
You can try it and see, for my Note 4 it has been an amazing tool, replacing photoshop (sometimes even better) or desktop painting apps, in many cases.
Great insights Lisa! I would love this phone for drawing every other feature just feels tacked on. Infinite Painter is a really amazing drawing app that rivals sketchbook pro. I would recommend giving it a try, there is almost no learning curve either.
Hi Lisa, can you try to enable wifi calling on the AT&T network? There has been a lot of discussion amongst the forums that the unlocked versions will not be able to use VoLTE, HDVoice and WiFi calling through the AT&T network. As always, I love your vids. Thanks!

Can the default apps that show when you eject the pen be changed? I use OneNote a lot and would prefer to have that show than Google Notes.
