Always a fun watch. Fantastic 36hp back from the dead. Reminds me of the first start of my stale-air 40hp. I cleaned every bit of old dried, caked oil and grease from between every fin on the barrels with a small screwdriver. Tool me almost a week! Re-assembled everything, she'd turn great, but just refused to start. Not even an occasional pop here or there, just nothing. Then read on a blog it might be 180 out. reversed the wires, and it immediately sprung to life and even idled! I did the happy dance in my garage that night. Love your videos, Jason.
@@ronmolskness1478 He uses an old trany case cut down . I have one for 6 volt and one for 12 volt, I also use #0 gauge battery cables so it'll spin well on six volts . -Nate
I've been a VW/Porsche guy since 1967, growing up in Westford, MA. Just bought my grandson a 1973 914 so he can learn what we know. A 2.0 with dual Italian Webers, Bursch, and a 009 mech advance distributor. Now living in NYC and he has replaced the rear brakes, installed keyed door locks, fixed the fuel level sending unit, and next we will replace the clutch cable. Teach your grandchildren well you oldtimers!
Great job, I remember as a 20 something year old lifting they engines no problem, would break my back now 😂 sitting on a sat night watch a vw engine running 🤔🫣
My first of many VW’s was a ‘56 or ‘57 convertible bought in ‘68. 36 horsepower and I was happy to have it. Got 2 miles down the road and it stopped. Turns out the gas tank was full of crap. I took it to the shop and boiled it out. Blew out the lines and the carb. No problems after that. I remember my wife and four of her younger sisters and brothers with us out for a ride with the top down. Then the first steep hill. 😂 downshifted all the way and still barely made it to the top. 36 horsepower the day it left the factory. Ten or eleven tears later….probably less. ❤. Now my grandson is hot for VW’s but they aren’t $300 anymore.
BTW I learned to drive in a 1960 Bug with the sunroof, India Red. We actually went to Wolfsburg to pick it up at the factory. I have tons of stories to share but today is Thanksgiving! So Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from me and mine
"Are you ready?" It runs! I'd call that a success. Congratulations! I had a '56 Oval with the original 36hp engine. Great little runner. Not a powerhouse for sure. It was perfect for cruising the backroads. I'm always anxious to see the next video. Take care.
Stumbled upon your channel. That was fun. I’m 70, in 1970-72 worked part time and then full time at a VW garage, learned a lot about engines then Tinkering many years on VW Beatles. Went off to college in 73 and went different direction from machanics. I’m going to go back and watch some of your content.
Great job getting that engine running after 50 yrs sounds good and all the work you did on the rescue of the two vans in the bush got to say you held on there for sure great work and hard no doubt but you got threw it and you must have been exhausted as well...
'In the news today; Jason was found lying on the floor of his garage, it is thought he died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning'. Well I hope not because the garage door was partly open. She is a runner without a doubt. Some 6 Volt starters will work fine on 12 Volts of power but others not so well. You got there in the end as you always do even if we had 100 takes to get there! Jason thanks and thanks to Jen for her off camera encouragement, she is a good wife to have. 👍👍
It's the coil which won't appreciate the 12 volts.. The starters windings are up to 12v,as are the rest of the system except for the light bulbs which die a glorious death shortly after hooking a 12v battery up to the vehicle... 😆
It lives... Congrats. That's gotta be the best 6 volt starter ever made. I was starting to think that you hooked her up to 24 volts because I've never heard a VW turn over that fast before LOL...
No ; both the starter he used and the generator are later production . FWIW, a 6 volt starter should last years of daily use on 12 volts if the engine is kept in tune so it starts quickly . -Nate
I had to do a double take, because I thought a younger Tommy Lee Jones had taken over your channel. Three of my vertebrae shifted watching you lift that engine, especially when you didn't have your feet set. But I am glad to hear this engine sputter back to life.😁👍
Watching you loading that engine brought back memories of when I was in better shape, and lifting like that and it made me cringe at the thought of you ending up crippled like me.
LOL, I had a 36 hp. in a '64 Bus for a while. Definitely NOT an interstate cruiser! It was fine for around town though. I used to use it to do some of the local flea markets back in the 1970's in PA. As long as you don't run them wide open constantly, they're pretty reliable old motors.😄👍👍
12 v on a 6v starter really gets them spinning! I had to do that with my flathead in my 40 Ford.. but it got it to fire first time in decades. Congrats!! After the BUS in a Stream videos, seeing your persistance..definitely a fan..
IDK, you never cease to amaze me! First you muscle the motor on to the single cab bed, then you manage to get it running! Let me tell you Jayson there is no other channel i look forward to watching more than yours. there is never anything predictable, and always entertaining! Thanks again and have a great weekend!
Hi Jason, Nice video. Don't worry about running 12 volts through a 6 volt starter. They are indestructible. I converted a 66 model Beetle to 12 volts in the mid 80s but retained the 6 volt starter. I daily drove it for 2 years with no starter issues. It beats the hell out of parking on hills.
It's a great feeling when any engine starts for the first time ! I've had my 63 beetle on 12 volts for years but changed the solenoid on the starter to 12v so it doesn't crash into the ring gear, although I think I'm too late, and chewed a few teeth 😒 1st time commenter but long time watcher 😀 A big thanks !
The first and only engine I ever rebuilt was a 68 1500 that number #1 piston blew up. I got Muir’s idiot book, converted it to 1600 with a new piston & cylinder kit. The crank and block were still standard after 90,000 miles. I balanced the rods put it back together and it ran like a top. Painted the car, new interior, tires, wheels, exhaust, sun roof. Sold it to a girl for a premium price, explained to her the importance of clean oil, valve adjusts, etc. she drove it off and ran it low on oil and seized the engine!
Hello from Australia. Watched a few of your things includin days trying to get bus out of creek at haunted house. To see you casually share your wealth of knowledge on engine just resting there on the back of a vw terrific.. i have no idea what you are doing most of the time but extremely interesting and entertaining.. oh then wife talking to you. Trying to shoot a video babe.. nice
I‘ve discovered your Channel just a few days ago. Now i non stop watch your videos. Tey are awesome. I hope i will be your 1.501 st loyal subscriber.💪🏼
Back in the 36hp days the oils used were straight weight and possibly non-detergent. Didn't take long for engines to gunk-up. Theory was to have oil cling to parts. Now you want oils to lubricant and move on and pull heat away from parts. Totally different Theory these days. Lots of detergents in the oil 🧐
True dat, straight 30 or 40 weight oils is what they recommended and what was mostly available back then.. Also, there was lead in the gas to help the valves survive, which coated the moving combustion chamber parts to make them live longer ...
@Wil_Liam1 Or so they thought, cars run cleaner and longer on unleaded, only difference is the material that valve seats are made of. 100k was alot of miles back then, now 300k is
My back hurt watching you lift that 36er! Gawd I hate six volts. Restored my '66 Beetle 25 years ago and left it all stock including the six volt system. What a mistake! Made the car unenjoyable to drive due to the unreliability. Finally did a full 12 volt conversion earlier this year and wish I had done it decades ago. Put almost 1000km on it already this summer!
I can’t believe what you lift alone 😳 If I was closer we would be doing that stuff together, please be careful. Very cool on the crank nut!! For the factory crank handle to hook too! I had two dead batteries in my garage for starting 😁 Wooohoooooo!!!! She’s alive!!!!! Nicely done my friend!!!! You rock!! HIT THE LIKE BUTTON FOLKS! And you’ll have good luck! 🍀 😁
It never grows old hearing a vw engine burst back into life after years of not running love it
Nothing beats the sound of a restarted rescued VW engine. Music to my ears!
I could smell that exhaust through my computer screen!!!

Wow! It runs. A success story in one video. The curse of the buses in the stream has been lifted.
Totally OSHA approved engine lift. :D Good job, Jay!
Oh Sh*t Hernia Again😂
I had the same thought. actually felt my bad disc compress as I watched that.
How did you Mount the starter
@@ronmolskness1478 He uses an old trany case cut down .

I love the simplicity of those 36s. that thing sounds awesome too another great rescue Jay

wow, a 2.0 ! lucky kid ! I have a 74 2.0 , last ran when i drove it where it currently sits... i can't find the keys🤣😭
We used to drive VWs that ran worse than that. You're golden!
Great job, I remember as a 20 something year old lifting they engines no problem, would break my back now 😂 sitting on a sat night watch a vw engine running 🤔🫣
Awesome!! Hearing that thing running made me so excited
sounds and runs great

You did an awesome job of getting it to start again. It reminds me of my Dad's Vw Bug.
thank you , glad it took you back
That thing sounds healthy.... nice job!
It's a runner! It's alive! 😊 saved you for Sunday morning then MUSTIE. Great 👌 👍 job
Good Morning Todd thanks for dropping in. I watched Mustie’s video this morning. That fuel system was pretty nasty!
Your patience and love for the challenge is legendary
Thank you , much appreciated
Best feeling in the world when a greasy old junk engine finally kicks back to LIFE!! You're an inspiration to us all. Man, it runs good too!
Looks like those NAPA batteries where napping alright! Great video! Have a great Day!
did you see the dates on those batteries? The guy is asking for way too much there!
BTW I learned to drive in a 1960 Bug with the sunroof, India Red. We actually went to Wolfsburg to pick it up at the factory. I have tons of stories to share but today is Thanksgiving! So Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from me and mine
The “It’s a runner!” primal scream. Its like inventing fire all over again lol
"Are you ready?" It runs! I'd call that a success. Congratulations! I had a '56 Oval with the original 36hp engine. Great little runner. Not a powerhouse for sure. It was perfect for cruising the backroads. I'm always anxious to see the next video. Take care.
Very cool, a VW rear engine powered Ford pickup. Kidding, good work.

6v starters on 12v converted cars in top running order are the best . 1/2 a turn and that car is running
good work as always. keep them coming.
Thank you MS , much appreciated
Love the content - takes me back to working on my ‘69 beetle in my teenage years. Can’t wait to see this project come together!
That '56 sounds great! I had one that I used in the winter time because of it's dead cold reliability. j
Always like a good will it run, especially when it runs. Great job.
I love the sound of an early air cooled VW engine!!! Thanks for sharing this little life victory.
yes! just heard my friends ( Larry ) restored 36'R run today, wow what a beauty and sounded amazing
I love this on every level! Been around these engines in the past and appreciate what I just witnessed!
Good job, I can't believe the 6 volt starter lasted long enough to get it started. It must be an original that's never been touched.
No ; both the starter he used and the generator are later production .

Great job 👍 nothing like hearing the 36 come back to life... Easy on the back!!! Have a great rest of your weekend.
She’s a runner and a smoker 😅 Congrats J!
Brings back old memories of my '56 in '67 after a rebuild.
Very nice 👍

Great job, dude. When it coughed and sputtered to life, I was SUPER happy for ya.
Thank you VF!
Persistence pays off. Might need to improve you battery inventory though...LOL.
Nice one!! MVP, that 6v starter!!!
My back went out watching you lift that engine.
yeah, mine has been a little cantankerous lately
Rock On !
Of course we watch! LET"S GO!
Brandon?
Fair play it sounds a decent engine jason 👌
Thank you BMX’r
Well done Jason, I always enjoy your persistance and humour.
A veteran 'boxer' back in business !!! Good one !
Watching you loading that engine brought back memories of when I was in better shape, and lifting like that and it made me cringe at the thought of you ending up crippled like me.
Back in the late 70s I used to hump those engines around like that. Only did it for a few years. Now I am 71 and my back is trashed out.
My heart beat at 8000 rpm wow Ian happy to see run this motor loved remembering 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Well done! Enjoyed watching that 36 come back to life🎉
i nearly pooped myself straining with you lifting that
I left my right foot in a bad spot behind the jack , was pretty awkward....otherwise would of been fine
It wasn’t locked up, of course it’ll run!
Nice work dude.
Lookd good for the crusher or boat anchor.😅

Damn awesome Jay!!! Frankentruck will be Alive!!
thank you William .... Frankentruck ???
@5150mxVW seriously, it's a awesome dub!
Awesome...love those first starts!!!!
I knew it would run! The 36hp is VWs greatest most venerable engine! Can’t beat that sound either.
yes! I just drove Larry's 54, what an awesome car
love it :) felt the pain of endless flat batteries too :)
That truck is going to be cool when you get it going
A simple thank you Lord goes a long way😊
Well done!! Thanks for another great video!!!
Nice job !!! We knew you would do it !!
Excellent, tho ive seen a lot worse looking one's also revived, i bet the compression has increased across all 4 cylinder's now it run.

Good job, J!!!!

Thank you Dave
Awesome! sounds great Jay, love the sound of those old VW emgines.
Awesome job, Jason!
When the big chunk of white crud fell out of there, I could've sworn I saw an off road jack flying over in a group of Canada geese!

the sound of these engines
pure nostalgia
