Great video! We just completed the TransAmerica route across Virginia. Damascus to Williamsburg. 450 miles, 26k ft elevation in 5 days. Pretty happy with how it went. Cheers!
Very useful information Andy, for me you haven’t released one yet that I haven’t found useful 👍 along with peoples input from the comments 👍. “Poor planning leads to poor performance”, I always keep that in mind and the same is true for route planning along with “devil in the details” the longer the job or in this case the ride the more the details need to be fine tuned. Another great video, thanks for sharing how you approach this 😊👍
Makes me realise how much planning is involved in plotting a route through Europe on roads that could be unrideable. I certainly learnt a few things from this. Have had a few Garmin disasters on my travels in wet weather (Panceltic race) and phone useless too. Sometimes a paper map can be useful ,as long as it's waterproof. Hope you can get to do the TCR again next year!
Cheers Andy, some great insights there and good experiences - i tend to use koomot for the initial high level plan and elevation profile, its useful to use the OS mapping and open cyclemap layers in koomot and back that up with strava heat maps like you said and yep, streetview for diving into the detail although for off raod i cross check on trail forks too - there so much to consider with route planning but i like the way you break it all down into sections (does help the head unit to process the files!) and then add notes along the way - cheers, have a good one!
Interesting to see how much planning goes into rides like the TCR or the great devise ride over here in the US. I’m betting you spent more time panning than the ride would have taken you.❤
I rode from Skopje to CP3 at strpce / prevalle, the “gravel” shortcut I chose was boulders! And steep ! Oops , was very hard watching the riders doing the same in reverse and not being allowed to tell them to think again!!
Really interesting Andy! And I thought tweaking a 100km Komoot route was quite time consuming...! 4,000km! "A monstrous amount of work" as you say. Will you be able to use that TCR route next year? As a basic template? Or will it be back to the drawing board?
Hey, I'll defo use it as a reference but then who knows what the route will be. I saw the support cars in unusual places around Turkey this year, possibly looking at potential routes next year in Turkey, lets see mate
Exactly the video I needed, at just the right moment. Great and above all very practical tips. Thanks, Andy! Currently in the middle of a bike trip from Amsterdam to Istanbul, inspired by the TCR. I noticed your routes on Komoot are still set to private. Would you mind making them public? Thanks again!
Thanks for the video. I was wondering, in preparation for such grand events like the TCR, why not ride parts in doubt a few months earlier upon track announcement to check local conditions?
I am currently planning a cycling holiday in the Netherlands in a couple of weeks time. I am always dipping in and out of Germany... which reminds me.. due to privacy laws in Germany you may have noticed no Streetview not available - which is a BIG big deal! And of course the resolution of satellite views is very poor generally. On the final subject of heatmaps... did you notice how or suspect that the further you are heading into Eastern Europe the only red lines are essentially from other TCR riders ;-)
I diod mate yeah, although I found this end a lot easier to manage, except Germany has a TON of closed roads so be prepared for that, unless they fixed them all by now. Are you getting the ferry over then?
@Liondust yeah kept those along my route it was spectacular!I went before in 2022 as part of race around the Netherlands so I just had to see them again! Taking the gravel bike so gonna visit a few National parks as well.

That sounds like a great adventure, good work 😁

Cheers for watching mate 😁

Me too, hopefully they let me back in :)

Cheers for chipping in buddy 👍
Absolute nuggets of gold, thank you very much.
glad to hear that :)
I've used Strava pour planning lots of routes in France, and it has never disappointed me, never sent me along a main road or unsuitable path.
Some great advice Andy Thanks
Wow this is invaluable!
glad to hear that :)

to be honest mate probably not far off haha

Yeah I bet, I was fully expecting to walk those 😬
Really interesting Andy!

This sounds very exciting, I just made all of them public, if you ride any of them then please let me know

You could do that yes but need a lot of time and money to do that

Hi Andy, great video again. I've got Strava and I've got komoot. I find komoot better for planning routes UK personally 😅
If you have the chance, definitely go through the dunes along the sea - mainly between Amsterdam all the way to Zeeland

@@theroadprovides hull to Rotterdam... I'll do diversions as I find them... I've knocked the mileage down a few weeks pegs, more happy pace
