The Road Provides
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 พ.ย. 2016
My name is Andy, I spend my life working toward being a fitter, stronger, more robust ultra cyclist. This channel is 'no bull', I make warts and all videos about the reality of ultra cycling. The good, bad and sometimes ugly. I am not one of those that show only the smiles and sunsets. So if you're interested in what it takes, or want to push your own limits, then join me. I'll cover things like training, indoors and out. Nutrition. Strategies for faster ultra times. Equipment reviews etc. Managing the pains and mental anguish that we inexplicably seem to enjoy. See you on the road!
How Fast Can I Ride 100 MILES NON STOP - An Endurance Cycling Time Trial
Hi all,
Welcome back to the channel! This week I am attempting a challenge that I've wanted to do for AAAGES! Finding a course on the road is tough, so a closed ex F1 track will have to do I suppose. The idea is to give myself all advantages I can in fuel etc and just ride for 100 miles. Flat out. Non stop. I'm really happy with buy time but as I mention, it's just for some good old fashioned type 2 fun.

what is your AVG power??
For this test? No idea, I was pacing on hr only
@@theroadprovides you don't have power meter?
Being a motorcyclists as well as a cyclist I tend to use some of my winter gear from that when I'm cycling for example gloves. I layer up a couple pairs of socks and wear oversized hiking or army surplus boots for my feet. Same with my torso, plenty of layers topped off with a water proof jacket if needed, long johns keep my legs warm. Take a flask with you, nothing better than a warm drink on a cold day to perk you up.
Fab effort ! ... actually nice way do a century risk free away from the roads ...
Yeah it’s a great place for this kind of test, ideal really
Great first episode! Perfect for turbo season. Really enjoyed the section on the different events coming up - sometimes its hard to know where to look, a bit like the "Netflix" problem of there being too much choice so you never pick anything. Looking forward to the next one
Thanks buddy! Appreciate it, the next one is recorded ready to go :)
Really enjoyed that Andy, it looked great. Well, grim but great if you catch my drift? Nice one 👏🏼
Yeah I know what you mean mate 😁
Did you use the drops to get s little more aero?
Hey, it was 5hrs not stop I changed hand position all the time
Well done! I've done quite a lot of riding over my life, including racing round Goodwood. However, I've never just set out to do a 100 mile TT! It is a great mental challenge. While I was watching, I initially thought that your pieces to cam were just slowing you down. But then I also thought that maybe they provided a goal to a mental break, and might actually have aided your progress. Ride safe! :)
maybe, but then I want to do the camera work still
Thanks, replied to this twice as I don’t think it worked 👍
@@theroadprovides Two likes then! lol
My PB is 54.7 miles whilst bikepacking. 100 miles is some peddling not sure if i could keep up with that pace.
No point in comparing I think just empty the tank and have fun :)
@theroadprovides I enjoy every ride. The only that stops me is knowing I have to get home for the kids and food. 2024 has been 1 of those years for me. 2025 is going to be a riding year for me.
Great podcast, might take from podcast is on long distances rides is less stopping but quality of sleep might mean hotel hostel rather than carry all that weight. 😊
Thanks mate, it’s the great thing about these events, so many ways to approach it
If you’re not snotty you’re not trying hard enough, chapeau!
Well done Andy superstar 😊
Cheers mate!
Awesome effort, well done! 🙌
Why no aerobars? Congratulations anyhow!
I just don’t have any for my tarmac
@@theroadprovides Quite likely, you might have been faster on your Mason then? The joys of proprietary super integrated handlebars.
That was great Andy! Well done on a great ride! Riding a track like that looks so good - no cars, no traffic lights, nothing but you and the bike and your limits. Adding the 360 footage really enhanced the video I think.
Cheers mate it was fun to edit those 😁
You would have made 5:00 easy if you rode your aero bars. You should also consider an aero hydration pack and aero bottles, both with mix in them. Probably another 2/10ths of a mph there. I would have also done a bunch more ketones…1/hr at least. Nice work. 🎉
Cheers mate, I just don’t have any aero bars for the tarmac
Well done Although I'm not sure my brain could handle going round and round the same route
Would aerobars made it easier?
In a word yeah, I just don’t have any for my tarmac
I did something similar 2 years ago I planned to do 112 as an Ironman bike simulation on my Tribike. I kept having to stop and pee after the 4th stop I decided to go another 15ish miles and then empty the tank. I wound up doing 89 miles, I have great a great loop here about 2.5 miles and flat with next to no traffic but a strong head wind on one side and because it comes down the river you don’t get the tail on the other side. I leaned a lot and had a bikefit after that I think I will go for the full 112 miles next spring.
Go for it mate 😁
fair play Andy that was a strong effort -well done!
Cheers mate
Well done! My only century so far I did in 6 hours and 20 minutes on a really flat trail 122ft elevation gain over the entirety I really look forward to doing another one
Go for it it’s great fun 😁
I love this. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! 😁
That's a great speed for 100 miles on the flat. Well done indeed, you should be well pleased! Not sure if you mentioned, but did you do any nature stops?
No none, I needed it by 4:30 I’d say
Awesome video. If you're going to cover big distances, time to get some aerobars. Wayyyyyyyy faster. And more comfortable. And side cargo pockets in your bike shorts are huge aero drag.
I just don’t have any for my tarmac but yeah can believe you
Great video. Will be booking a slot to have a go, looks a grand day out.
Hope you enjoy it to great fun
Impressive!
I can feel your pain all the way over here in the States. 😰
Great video Andy!
So pleased to see another video on your channel! It brought back memories of my 1st 100 mile TT back in the 80s on a Claude butler touring bike with pedal clips. It was a lovely route going through Winkton and Sopley in the Ringwood area.My coach handed up half a malt loaf and it took me about 5 miles to eat it, then he was stood round the corner with the other half🤣. No garmin tech, not even a HR monitor, but I paced it perfectly. Beautiful bike, nothing better than riding a proper fast road bike. Thought you were taking things a bit easy in the 1st 3 hours, so was glad to see you a bit wrecked at the finish. That's how it should be! Kudos for a great ride and a good time!!!
Oh yeah, definitely emptied the tank 😂 I also had malt loaf!
Go, Andy, go! I hope to se you on the next PBP!
I’ll definitely be there mate
About 15 years ago I was the office cycling nut - commuting to work and doing 100 km rides at the weekends. There was a certain amount of bewildered admiration. Then this really skinny guy joined who said he was a cyclist. I checked out his Strava - he'd done a 100 mile ride at the weekend in (from memory) 4 hours 10 minutes and then cycled the same distance home. I was no longer the office cycling nut.
That is extremely fast…. If your memory is correct that guy was a beast
There’s always a bigger fish
@@theroadprovides Yes, I asked him what bike he had. I assumed there must have been something wrong with mine.
@theroadprovides and that's always irrelevant...you still ride?
Great video.......I don't care about snot
That’s lucky then 😂
Amazing work mate. And overall what an absolutely quality video. Nice to see the Sworks getting dirty 😊
Cheers mate! 😁
Great vid Andy well done 😊💪🚴🏻 could I ask which mudguards you use ? Thanks Pete 😊
Hi mate, they’re sks bluemels
well done. So far I have been only doing 100km. Will try to do my first 100 mile February probably will take closer to 7 hours.
Do it 😁
Looks like a lot of fun (you had stellar weather as well). I did a 100K time trial on the road once aiming sub-4 hours (nailed it). I would like to see what I could do on a track.
It’s well worth it 😁
Nice one Andy I think you played that one pretty well and should be pleased with your effort and time. I never knew that the track had open days will have to look into it myself one day 💪
Do it it’s great fun
A great video and a great effort, congratulations! I definitely believe that you could do a sub-5 hours. Better pace management and if you did this in warmer weather, you could look at an aero optimized kit, over that time/distance, it would definitely matter. I guess I will have to add a 100-mile time trial to my goal events for 2025!
It was a lot of fun 😁 I’ll try again later in the year I think
Well done...... Enjoyable
Glad you enjoyed it 😁
I suppose that in the end it all depends on whether your riding is race-led focusing on speed and sugar based nutrition with the latest, greatest, lightest, electronic equipment or perhaps you ride as far as possible to see new places and the beauty of our beloved island. Regardless of this i admire what you achieve but at my age i am incapable of much speed and envious of your relative youth or perhaps resentful of the loss of mine. Having said all that i could never have forced myself to ride all that way around a track so very well done.
You're not alone there @ronaldallen8604!
Thanks mate
Not sure I'd have tried this during Fall/Winter. Hat's off to you.
I'm not a big fan of mudguards. I had some SKS guards fitted, and did enjoy the slight feeling of protection they seemed to offer for a while, but they inexplicably split across the rear guard on an event, so have never been replaced. I also hated the added hassle of cleaning around a mudguard with many a bashed knuckle that results. So I always have an Assaver, but to prevent my tools in the saddle bag getting trashed, put them in a water bottle container for the winter which is perfectly waterproof. Rear lights on the other hand just get soaked which is not ideal and definitely shortens their life. On the feet issue, I've recently discovered that a warm merino thermal sock inside my ordinary road shoe then a shoe over-sock then a thin (non-thermal) waterproof bootie works wonders. It makes sure all the insulation remains unsquashed so works well, while wind & rain is kept out completely. A lot cheaper than a pair of winter boots, even if there is some contortion required getting it all on. The area I have really suffered from in the past is my shins once they are wet as the cold breeze really chills them down. Thermal tights is the only solution to this.
Thanks for this mate 😁
On the gloves question, Neoprene does actually work very well. It won't keep your hands dry, but they'll still be warm even when wet, which is essentially how Neoprene works in a wetsuit situation.
I really enjoyed the conversation while I was spinning away on the turbo on my new bike. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Also congratulations on the upcoming nuptials ❤
Glad you enjoyed it mate, it was good fun, what nuptials though? 😬😂
@ I was on the trainer so I must have heard you wrong I though you said during the pod cast that one of the races was right by where you where getting married.
Oh no not me 😁
In really cold conditions I use Neoprene Cycling Gloves. They keep my hands nice and warm. Hands do sweat but that moisture heats keeping your hands warm. I also have Sealskin gloves. They are not waterproof. Another good video Andy….👍
Thanks bud
Thanks, excellent podcast, really enjoyed hearing you and Rupert talking about your bikepacking adventures. It's a whole different level of suffering, and those who like stopping a lot(me) won't succeed. Which is why I gave it up🤣But love dotwatching the races and am full of admiration for those that compete in these events, like yourself and Rupert
Cheers Lydia! There’s nothing wrong with riding these events casually, so long as you enjoy riding them. No pressure to race
Awesome. Really enjoyed this. Really informative and full of tips for someone looking to do their first ultra. Loving the rebrand, thanks for all the content. Keep up the good work 👊
Thankyou buddy it was a lot of fun to make too :)
Have you seen the gloves from the Hunt guys? Dissent 133 is the brand. I’ve just bought them and they’re brilliant for warmth etc - the materials would suggest for water resistance too but I’ve yet to try that. Coming from that group though, I have confidence! For me, head, hands, and feet are a massive mental challenge - once they’re cold it’s all you can think about..
I know how you feel, I think I’m gonna go for these freezer gloves :)
Nice one Andy! Good start for the podcast series. Looking forward to future episodes.
Thanks mate 😁 it was fun to make
Bar Mitts/pogies. Almost too warm, even when sub zero.
