Damn, that photo of Chris at the end really hit me hard. To be so weak and beaten down, yet have the mental fortitude to take that one last dignified photo, with such a nice smile, and a note saying he lived a happy life, in spite of the fact that he just desperately wanted to be rescued.. So sad. What a soul.
I grew up in Alaska back in the 1970s, the schools had mandatory training for all students on winter survival, trapping, signaling, everything needed to survive in the wild if you were stranded. We made our own survival kits with everything needed to survive in the wild and it fit in a tennis ball tin. We learned what could be eaten, how to set snares and traps, how to fish, everything and we were graded on it. If you failed these classes you were kept back until you could pass them. Not sure if they do that anymore but it was a great experience, and if you know the land and you know the rules you can survive indefinitely out in the wild.
Honestly it's kind of an eye opener because in my family we sort of do the same thing not to the same extreme because I hate to say Texas just isn't as wild as Alaska but it's still a terrifying thought

That picture of Regina is so disturbing, sad, and just downright creepy. As someone with two stepdaughters in their 20s, it really terrifies me. I bought them pepper spray, they know how to shoot. But ultimately they know the stat, don't go to a second location, you fight right because nothing good happens if you go with them.
It's uncommon for a woman to be able to beat up a man...but it is common (about 70%, in fact) for a woman to fight off a man long enough to escape. Good for you for teaching your daughters how best to survive.
my dad bought me my own gun, and pepper spray and a taser. when i go on the trail near my house for walks, i always bring my pepper spray. even tho where i live, nothing happens, it’s still the thought.
I know there was no possibility that he would survive but even if he got to Tokyo were the plane was headed, what exactly what his plan from there? It’s just really odd. Plus the fact that this kid would know how airplanes work and that as soon as they took off he would just fall out of the plane facade or the chances of surviving this long trip with essentially no food and being in the cold should’ve been warning enough. Maybe the kid did it on purpose. As sad as it is maybe he wanted to be free.

@@freyashipley6556 I believe that almost anyone who is willing to commit these acts is either mentally deranged or have conditioned themselves to be able to commit evil acts. In a lot of the stories if you find out about the person's back story you see they start small and get big or watch a lot of disturbing videos to desensitize.

My husband teaches a survival course every year to cadets. Glad to know that you were able to take that course. Sadly, it seems this young man had a fantasy regarding living in the wild, and off the land. Knowing his clothes were inadequate was clue #1. So sad.

The picture of the poor girl from the 2nd story shows the face of what terror and dread combined look like. The poor torture that she endured over those years are just without words to describe.
You definitely don't wanna see a picture that puts you through the eyes of the murderer. Even more of an experience proving to us that the victim deserved so much better, which none of us would ever deny in the first place. Her life is more than this insult of terror being her final moment. As if it weren't bad enough that her life was stolen, it is now harder to remember her true spirit through such unjust dread.

Coming out of high school we read one more book as seniors in English class. It was Into the Wild, a book detailing Chris McCandless's journey and ultimately his death through his journal entries and accounts from people who had seen him. I think it was important for us as soon-to-be-grads to see that we aren't invincible and that we can't just go out and do anything without the proper training and knowledge. Chris was able to take down a moose but failed to cure the meat, so he lost his opportunity on feeding himself potentially for weeks. His inexperience and stubbornness lead him to his unfortunate death.

By the way, (if you ever need to know in a survival situation) there are several ways to cure meat, but most methods require devices specialized in safely curing meat that most people won't have on them. The two most accessible ways are: 1.) If you have a LOOOT of salt, enough to completely coat and bury your meat, do that and then leave it in the salt pile for a full day. But obviously Chris wouldn't have thought to do this, since he just seemed woefully unprepared on all fronts for his trip. I'll bet he didn't bring any spices at all, much less the amount of salt required to cure a whole ass moose. 2.) The most accessible way to cure your meat is by smoking it, which is a primitive technique and can be done out in the wild as long as there's wood thats dry enough to be burned. Strip your meat down into thin strips, and then hang them 6 feet above a fire for 6 hours. You can build a structure or use a tree or a clothesline, whatever you have on you. Additionally if it's the summer and pretty hot, some will also leave the meat out for 2-3 days to completely dry out the moisture in the meat such that it inhibits bacterial growth. Speaking of harmful stuff in meat, you should also throw your meat directly on your fire before curing it, as curing alone won't get rid of worms and stuff. Depending on the thickness of your meat, leave it on for maybe 2-7 minutes at a time before flipping it over. Remember that you're not cooking the meat during any of these steps, so don't leave the meat on the fire too long or on the smoker for too long if you're using that method. Stay safe!

I've watched several channels covering the case of Chris McCandless. It's amazing how Mr Ballen's storytelling choice by narrating it from the perspective of the men who found his SOS note and Chris' diary recording his early and final days living inside the bus gives out a new fresh feel to revisit the story.
I’ve read extensively on Chris McCandless and could assure you of two things. First, he did not have a death wish. Second, he was absolutely no idiot. He simply had a very rough childhood and was on a very personal rite of passage. The saddest part is that he did ‘find himself’ and tried to leave the wild, but had no idea that the river would have melted away and be raging by that point. He actually was a very avid outdoorsman, but he knew the Southwest, and not Alaskan country! He kaiaked across the border into Mexico and back again, he lived off the land in both California and Las Vegas, and was climbing since childhood. He just thought that he was more qualified to fulfill his lifelong dream of Alaska than he actually was. Considering what he had to deal with growing up, I’m certain anywhere is a much better place. His father was a real bastard and his mother was just complicit in his actions. He had great siblings, but he felt that he had to “cut the cord” with his parents and “falling off the map” was the way to do it, and he did shortly after graduating college. The electrician, BTW, could sense his intelligence as Chris would have went on to law school if it wasn’t for this, however with all his experience, nothing could have prepared him for Alaska. 😢

"into the wild" was a pretty good read. However, it showed how under prepared and inexperienced for everything that kid did in life. He was lucky to live as long and get as far as he did.
I didn't like that book. I had to read the book my junior year of high school and the movie. School makes students read books that are kind of sad. I prefer romance books fantasy books like Harry Potter, and mythology books and mystery books.
As an Alaskan, I've seen the bus several times, as it was left where it was. I do believe recently the town it is closest to (Healy, I think) has gotten rid of it...either via sale or via wrecker. It happens more often than you might think...people come up here for adventures with not enough information on how truly wild this place is. In Alaska, the moment you step out of your door, you are no longer at the top of the food chain.

I'm glad you shared some of the more gritty details of the Chris McCandless story. I think that unfortunately, the movie really over-romanticized the story (or at least, that's how a large percentage of viewers seemingly interpreted it). I remember several people in high school and college staying they wanted to "break away from society" or "live in nature" like Chris. I have no doubt Chris was a great kid, so this is not said as a negative remark against his character, but he was deeply irresponsible in his lack of proper preparation. No one should want to emulate his experience, and we most definitely should not romanticize a death that could have easily been prevented.
I didnt have that feeling watching the movie. I felt like it depicted his state of mind pretty correctly. It was his trail towards madness, which's cover slowly got brushed away for everyone to see the more the story progressed. They did leave out a lot of things that wouldnt have made for a good picture, but the substantial things were kept. People romanticize a lot as the day goes on, not thinking about the consequences. I think it's more the people who are stuck dreaming of how awesome it is to live in nature, because all they know is the city. Cause after all, all the Movie did was frame the book about his story.
The bonus video: warmed my heart so much. Recently lost my mother. And it shows me a glimpse into how much she loved me as a baby. I made her life rough. But i always knew she loved me. Shes no longer in pain. And im no longer making her life more painful. This gave me so hope i needed.
I’m sorry for your loss. Honour her memory by living life to the best of your ability. As a mother I guarantee this would make her the happiest she could ever be.
Yeah, that really was a great film. I still have mixed opinions about him. On the one hand, I think he lived an amazing life and got to experience more in his short lifetime than most people who get to live into their senior years get to. On the other hand, I think he was a bit foolish in his endeavors and if he would've just been even slightly more rational and taken the advice of many of the people he met he would've actually been able to go on and live a much longer life himself and experience even more before his passing.

Lots of ifs. If he would have went in even a little prepared. 1. his life would have been much more comfortable and 2. he would have easily survived. REALLY makes me wonder about his mental fitness, This isn't a walk in some 200 acre nature reserve I really can't imagine people not realizing the dangers of this area. The Alaskan wilderness is no joke, it’s not something you just stroll into after a hitchhiker drops you off as a _”hey, what’s over there?”_ curiosity. I mean, ffs, the man gave him BOOTS. What, was he going to walk into there barefoot?? Christ. I fail to see how Chris was so admired and idolized. Anyone who has even the _slightest_ inkling of awareness at how unmercifully brutal the Alaskan Outback is would consider this kid’s actions to be severely mentally challenged. What he did was mind-bogglingly imprudent. Either he was suicidal, or he was a complete imbecile. Ultimately, Mother Nature cared not for such a distinction.
Christopher McCandless was an idiot going so unprepared into the Alaskan wilderness, I don’t understand why people idolise him when in reality he was a spastic. He basically committed suicide because he was too proud or stupid to get a map of the area.
I don’t get why he would choose the Alaskan wilderness of all places for the first time spending that long in the wild. At least choose a place with a more temperate environment to give yourself a fighting chance... But considering he didn’t even appear to appreciate the basics of what it would take to survive, or have an exit plan, he just seems to have been a little bit logically challenged.
I suffer from chronic depression and after watching, “Into The Wild” in the beginning of 2021. I felt so empty, lonely and utterly sad. Especially when I thought of Chris’ last encounter with the old guy. My heart aches for that man and his failed hopes of ever spending time with Chris again. After watching this episode, I remembered how through my tears, I had jotted down a thought I had, in a random notebook; I was able to find it after all this time. “All these lonely people in the world… yet, we just can’t seem to find one another.”
I say some people are alone by choice because even after Chris found the old guy he chose to just walk away to be alone again. The old guy loved Chris cared for Chris kept him company tried to give Chris advice even offered to adopt him yet Chris was so caught up in his own stubborn thinking he doesn't want to end up like his parents he wanted to be free from rules and living a caged life where society controls you Chris just wanted to be free and in the end he figured out life is only happy when shared with someone which is why his parents were still together they had their ups and downs but they were together..ijs
I know of Chris MCandless’ story well- it’s such a shame , he seemed like he had a brilliant spirit , and that last photo saddens me so much every time I see it .

Chris' death, as are so many of these tragic deaths in the wilderness, was preventable😔 Even today with smartphones with GPS etc, I still take a paper map and a real compass. Many people overestimate their abilities and underestimate the wilderness. That last picture with the sign was heartbreaking 💔😢

@Lauren Iversen Yes, that it what struck me most too when first reading about it. While tragic, it was so very preventable had he shown/had a little more respect for the wilderness and planned a bit more for his endeavour. I got the impression that he was caught in his own naivety and eagerness to get away from modern life (he even burned his money before setting off into the woods). As is pointed out here too - even just a map and compass would have helped him. Sad ending.

I think “beautiful blue berries” was to inform everyone how he went out so nobody had to wonder. Instead of starving or freezing to death he decided he’d eat some beautiful blue berries and go to sleep.
Unfortunately this is not true:( I wish he had a peaceful go out but in fact, he found large amount of wild potato root for which in large quantities is very dangerous. It completely weakens the human body causing the digestive tract to basically stop all together. Because if this, he starved to death and when he was found, only weighed 67 pounds. It’s a very very pain staking and slow way to die.

Have you ever heard of the saying “flirting with danger”? People want to live on the edge, but they don’t want to go over that edge. Well, majority of people don’t. I can understand fascination, but not glorification. These people have an impulse that they need to satisfy and see no other way out of it, they are literal addicts. Do people glorify drug addicts? No, no one glorifies addicts. We know there are alternatives and things you can do to recover. Serial killers don’t make any effort for recovery, some say they do, but realistically they do what any addict who doesn’t truly want to recover does, white knuckle it and hide. There are a lot of people with dark almost insane desires and what do they do? They enroll in consensual bdsm, and they take it to the extreme with consent. You can live out any fantasy with very advanced realistic role play, and I mean a whole group of people will spend months building scenes and going over performances before doing it. without ever actually killing someone, or doing something that is beyond another persons consent. I just don’t understand when there are so many options nowadays to get help or to live out fantasies consensually and very realistic, why the physical need to kill is there. If you need to kill, kill yourself, you’ll never have the urge to do it again 😉
I get it when someone is criminalist or psychologist. But why is some people fascinated by them... I saw people with shirts with photo of murderer or even tattoo of some serial killer. Are they psychopath or mentaly sick to do this? If I were the tattoo artist I would never make a tattoo like this. Or how could somebody sell clothes or items with photos of murderers. It's disguisting! it's funny when you have somebody famous (actor or scientist,...) on Tshirt but it's not sarcastic or funny to wear photo of a murderer. It's like making fun from his victims. Criminals are not heroes, they are the worst of humans, unhuman and total waste of air!

I read "Into the wild." Chris had a book on edible plants,but accidentally mistook seeds that made his digestive system shut down, instead of nourish him. That's how he died. If I'm wrong please correct me. Thank you.
I’m currently re-reading it, and no he didn’t. Somewhere in the book it said he froze/starved to death due to the harsh Alaskan winter.which is really sad...
To this day, there is still debate. Ultimately, that detail doesn't matter in the grand scheme of his life and the 1,000 decisions that took him there. He had a restless soul and at least left behind a legacy carried on by his sister and others who loved him who do charitable work.
I remember hearing Chris’ story when I was in middle school/high school. We watched Into The Wild in school, and I could stifle my tears. And hearing it all over again, 10 years later, the pain is still there.
I always feel at least a little bad for anyone who has died, including the men who succumb to their own hubris (there's a LOT of them featured on this channel, but I draw the line when they get others killed horribly as well). That being said, Chris smiling warmly at the end with gratitude, even when he was no doubt scared and lonely and sad, all disheveled and ready to go... And salvation was just a mile away.. The poor guy.

Not really. He was quite skilled; he very well could have survived even going back waiting for the river’s rough currents to subside. He likely died from eating wild potato seed pods.. before his death there wasn’t extensive research done on them to indicate they could kill anyone so eating them was perfectly reasonable according to the botany book he was reading. Only after his death did Jon Krakauer send the wild potato pods to a lab to be studied further and thus discovered the effects they actually have.
the last one always makes me sad, he was so close to that cabin and never knew it and died alone after not seeing another human for months. Its such a lonely thing to think about.

My niece went to Emory with Chris Mcandless. I remember her telling me about this really cool, handsome kid who liked to eat his lunch sitting in a tree. I am sure he is wandering the world now having a grand old time. Sending peace to his family. This angel really wasn't meant to be Earth bound!

The thing is, after reading a full-length book or two, it’s far easier to digest Chris’ actions and understand who he was as a person. It actually bothers me when people say that his demise was fueled by arrogance when it was clearly a rite of passage gone wrong. If it wasn’t for the one particular seed he ate, he would have very well walked out of there alive, but the only reason this was even documented was as a result of Chris’ death.

Damn, that photo of Chris at the end really hit me hard. To be so weak and beaten down, yet have the mental fortitude to take that one last dignified photo, with such a nice smile, and a note saying he lived a happy life, in spite of the fact that he just desperately wanted to be rescued.. So sad. What a soul.
I grew up in Alaska back in the 1970s, the schools had mandatory training for all students on winter survival, trapping, signaling, everything needed to survive in the wild if you were stranded. We made our own survival kits with everything needed to survive in the wild and it fit in a tennis ball tin. We learned what could be eaten, how to set snares and traps, how to fish, everything and we were graded on it. If you failed these classes you were kept back until you could pass them. Not sure if they do that anymore but it was a great experience, and if you know the land and you know the rules you can survive indefinitely out in the wild.
Honestly it's kind of an eye opener because in my family we sort of do the same thing not to the same extreme because I hate to say Texas just isn't as wild as Alaska but it's still a terrifying thought

That picture of Regina is so disturbing, sad, and just downright creepy. As someone with two stepdaughters in their 20s, it really terrifies me. I bought them pepper spray, they know how to shoot. But ultimately they know the stat, don't go to a second location, you fight right because nothing good happens if you go with them.
It's uncommon for a woman to be able to beat up a man...but it is common (about 70%, in fact) for a woman to fight off a man long enough to escape. Good for you for teaching your daughters how best to survive.

I know there was no possibility that he would survive but even if he got to Tokyo were the plane was headed, what exactly what his plan from there? It’s just really odd. Plus the fact that this kid would know how airplanes work and that as soon as they took off he would just fall out of the plane facade or the chances of surviving this long trip with essentially no food and being in the cold should’ve been warning enough. Maybe the kid did it on purpose. As sad as it is maybe he wanted to be free.

In a lot of the stories if you find out about the person's back story you see they start small and get big or watch a lot of disturbing videos to desensitize.

Coming out of high school we read one more book as seniors in English class. It was Into the Wild, a book detailing Chris McCandless's journey and ultimately his death through his journal entries and accounts from people who had seen him. I think it was important for us as soon-to-be-grads to see that we aren't invincible and that we can't just go out and do anything without the proper training and knowledge. Chris was able to take down a moose but failed to cure the meat, so he lost his opportunity on feeding himself potentially for weeks. His inexperience and stubbornness lead him to his unfortunate death.

Just to essentially kill his ego and be free.
I found this story in particularly a tale of sadness, yet unnecessary ignorance.
By the way, (if you ever need to know in a survival situation) there are several ways to cure meat, but most methods require devices specialized in safely curing meat that most people won't have on them. The two most accessible ways are:
1.) If you have a LOOOT of salt, enough to completely coat and bury your meat, do that and then leave it in the salt pile for a full day. But obviously Chris wouldn't have thought to do this, since he just seemed woefully unprepared on all fronts for his trip. I'll bet he didn't bring any spices at all, much less the amount of salt required to cure a whole ass moose.
2.) The most accessible way to cure your meat is by smoking it, which is a primitive technique and can be done out in the wild as long as there's wood thats dry enough to be burned. Strip your meat down into thin strips, and then hang them 6 feet above a fire for 6 hours. You can build a structure or use a tree or a clothesline, whatever you have on you. Additionally if it's the summer and pretty hot, some will also leave the meat out for 2-3 days to completely dry out the moisture in the meat such that it inhibits bacterial growth.
Speaking of harmful stuff in meat, you should also throw your meat directly on your fire before curing it, as curing alone won't get rid of worms and stuff. Depending on the thickness of your meat, leave it on for maybe 2-7 minutes at a time before flipping it over. Remember that you're not cooking the meat during any of these steps, so don't leave the meat on the fire too long or on the smoker for too long if you're using that method. Stay safe!

I've watched several channels covering the case of Chris McCandless. It's amazing how Mr Ballen's storytelling choice by narrating it from the perspective of the men who found his SOS note and Chris' diary recording his early and final days living inside the bus gives out a new fresh feel to revisit the story.

I’ve read extensively on Chris McCandless and could assure you of two things. First, he did not have a death wish. Second, he was absolutely no idiot. He simply had a very rough childhood and was on a very personal rite of passage. The saddest part is that he did ‘find himself’ and tried to leave the wild, but had no idea that the river would have melted away and be raging by that point. He actually was a very avid outdoorsman, but he knew the Southwest, and not Alaskan country! He kaiaked across the border into Mexico and back again, he lived off the land in both California and Las Vegas, and was climbing since childhood. He just thought that he was more qualified to fulfill his lifelong dream of Alaska than he actually was. Considering what he had to deal with growing up, I’m certain anywhere is a much better place. His father was a real bastard and his mother was just complicit in his actions. He had great siblings, but he felt that he had to “cut the cord” with his parents and “falling off the map” was the way to do it, and he did shortly after graduating college. The electrician, BTW, could sense his intelligence as Chris would have went on to law school if it wasn’t for this, however with all his experience, nothing could have prepared him for Alaska. 😢

"into the wild" was a pretty good read. However, it showed how under prepared and inexperienced for everything that kid did in life. He was lucky to live as long and get as far as he did.
Really good film too. Shows that his best moments were with other people. People he was trying to get away from and into the wild.
If he had taken the kind man's advice it would have been so different. Most good people are just trying to look out for the foolhardy.
I didn't like that book. I had to read the book my junior year of high school and the movie. School makes students read books that are kind of sad. I prefer romance books fantasy books like Harry Potter, and mythology books and mystery books.

As an Alaskan, I've seen the bus several times, as it was left where it was. I do believe recently the town it is closest to (Healy, I think) has gotten rid of it...either via sale or via wrecker.

I'm glad you shared some of the more gritty details of the Chris McCandless story. I think that unfortunately, the movie really over-romanticized the story (or at least, that's how a large percentage of viewers seemingly interpreted it). I remember several people in high school and college staying they wanted to "break away from society" or "live in nature" like Chris. I have no doubt Chris was a great kid, so this is not said as a negative remark against his character, but he was deeply irresponsible in his lack of proper preparation. No one should want to emulate his experience, and we most definitely should not romanticize a death that could have easily been prevented.

It was his trail towards madness, which's cover slowly got brushed away for everyone to see the more the story progressed.

People romanticize a lot as the day goes on, not thinking about the consequences.

Yeah, that really was a great film. I still have mixed opinions about him. On the one hand, I think he lived an amazing life and got to experience more in his short lifetime than most people who get to live into their senior years get to. On the other hand, I think he was a bit foolish in his endeavors and if he would've just been even slightly more rational and taken the advice of many of the people he met he would've actually been able to go on and live a much longer life himself and experience even more before his passing.

About the Truck Stop Killer: I had seen the last black and white photo of Regina K. Walters before, but MrBallen is the only channel that revealed what happened leading up to the killer's capture and beyond.

Yes Chris's story is so sad. To find out about your parents. Knowing he died alone. Thinking that if he could have lived 2 weeks later he would be alive. I cried myself.
Lots of ifs. If he would have went in even a little prepared. 1. his life would have been much more comfortable and 2. he would have easily survived. REALLY makes me wonder about his mental fitness, This isn't a walk in some 200 acre nature reserve I really can't imagine people not realizing the dangers of this area. I do appreciate the draw to live on your own and off the land for a bit, I'm sure it was a beautiful place. I bet he knew the berries were poisonous, its hard (not impossible) to believe starving in the summer time after surviving being snowed in.
The Alaskan wilderness is no joke, it’s not something you just stroll into after a hitchhiker drops you off as a _”hey, what’s over there?”_ curiosity. I mean, ffs, the man gave him BOOTS. What, was he going to walk into there barefoot?? Christ.
I fail to see how Chris was so admired and idolized. Anyone who has even the _slightest_ inkling of awareness at how unmercifully brutal the Alaskan Outback is would consider this kid’s actions to be severely mentally challenged. What he did was mind-bogglingly imprudent.
Either he was suicidal, or he was a complete imbecile. Ultimately, Mother Nature cared not for such a distinction.
Christopher McCandless was an idiot going so unprepared into the Alaskan wilderness, I don’t understand why people idolise him when in reality he was a spastic. He basically committed suicide because he was too proud or stupid to get a map of the area.
Chris's story is a prime example of what happens when you decide to hike into the Alaskan wilderness by " winging it".
I don’t get why he would choose the Alaskan wilderness of all places for the first time spending that long in the wild. At least choose a place with a more temperate environment to give yourself a fighting chance...
But considering he didn’t even appear to appreciate the basics of what it would take to survive, or have an exit plan, he just seems to have been a little bit logically challenged.
I suffer from chronic depression and after watching, “Into The Wild” in the beginning of 2021. I felt so empty, lonely and utterly sad. Especially when I thought of Chris’ last encounter with the old guy. My heart aches for that man and his failed hopes of ever spending time with Chris again. After watching this episode, I remembered how through my tears, I had jotted down a thought I had, in a random notebook; I was able to find it after all this time.

I say some people are alone by choice because even after Chris found the old guy he chose to just walk away to be alone again. The old guy loved Chris cared for Chris kept him company tried to give Chris advice even offered to adopt him yet Chris was so caught up in his own stubborn thinking he doesn't want to end up like his parents he wanted to be free from rules and living a caged life where society controls you Chris just wanted to be free and in the end he figured out life is only happy when shared with someone which is why his parents were still together they had their ups and downs but they were together..ijs
I know of Chris MCandless’ story well- it’s such a shame , he seemed like he had a brilliant spirit , and that last photo saddens me so much every time I see it .

@Daniel Hertzler One of my English teachers idolized the kid. Had us devote 2 full weeks to the book: Into the Wild. I thought the kid was thoughtless for not sending his family a card now and then so they wouldn't be worried sick.
Its sad and he only realized too late what he had done....to himself. His wanderlust ended up turning into blind arrogance.

Even today with smartphones with GPS etc, I still take a paper map and a real compass. Many people overestimate their abilities and underestimate the wilderness. That last picture with the sign was heartbreaking 💔😢

@Lauren Iversen Yes, that it what struck me most too when first reading about it. While tragic, it was so very preventable had he shown/had a little more respect for the wilderness and planned a bit more for his endeavour. I got the impression that he was caught in his own naivety and eagerness to get away from modern life (he even burned his money before setting off into the woods). As is pointed out here too - even just a map and compass would have helped him. Sad ending.

I think “beautiful blue berries” was to inform everyone how he went out so nobody had to wonder. Instead of starving or freezing to death he decided he’d eat some beautiful blue berries and go to sleep.

Unfortunately this is not true:( I wish he had a peaceful go out but in fact, he found large amount of wild potato root for which in large quantities is very dangerous. It completely weakens the human body causing the digestive tract to basically stop all together. Because if this, he starved to death and when he was found, only weighed 67 pounds. It’s a very very pain staking and slow way to die.

People want to live on the edge, but they don’t want to go over that edge. Well, majority of people don’t.
I can understand fascination, but not glorification. These people have an impulse that they need to satisfy and see no other way out of it, they are literal addicts.
Do people glorify drug addicts? No, no one glorifies addicts. We know there are alternatives and things you can do to recover. Serial killers don’t make any effort for recovery, some say they do, but realistically they do what any addict who doesn’t truly want to recover does, white knuckle it and hide.
There are a lot of people with dark almost insane desires and what do they do? They enroll in consensual bdsm, and they take it to the extreme with consent. You can live out any fantasy with very advanced realistic role play, and I mean a whole group of people will spend months building scenes and going over performances before doing it. without ever actually killing someone, or doing something that is beyond another persons consent. I just don’t understand when there are so many options nowadays to get help or to live out fantasies consensually and very realistic, why the physical need to kill is there.
If you need to kill, kill yourself, you’ll never have the urge to do it again 😉

I get it when someone is criminalist or psychologist. But why is some people fascinated by them... I saw people with shirts with photo of murderer or even tattoo of some serial killer. Are they psychopath or mentaly sick to do this? If I were the tattoo artist I would never make a tattoo like this. Or how could somebody sell clothes or items with photos of murderers. It's disguisting! it's funny when you have somebody famous (actor or scientist,...) on Tshirt but it's not sarcastic or funny to wear photo of a murderer. It's like making fun from his victims. Criminals are not heroes, they are the worst of humans, unhuman and total waste of air!

I read "Into the wild." Chris had a book on edible plants,but accidentally mistook seeds that made his digestive system shut down, instead of nourish him. That's how he died. If I'm wrong please correct me. Thank you.

I’m currently re-reading it, and no he didn’t. Somewhere in the book it said he froze/starved to death due to the harsh Alaskan winter.which is really sad...
To this day, there is still debate. Ultimately, that detail doesn't matter in the grand scheme of his life and the 1,000 decisions that took him there. He had a restless soul and at least left behind a legacy carried on by his sister and others who loved him who do charitable work.

I remember hearing Chris’ story when I was in middle school/high school. We watched Into The Wild in school, and I could stifle my tears. And hearing it all over again, 10 years later, the pain is still there.
I always feel at least a little bad for anyone who has died, including the men who succumb to their own hubris (there's a LOT of them featured on this channel, but I draw the line when they get others killed horribly as well). That being said, Chris smiling warmly at the end with gratitude, even when he was no doubt scared and lonely and sad, all disheveled and ready to go... And salvation was just a mile away.. The poor guy.

Not really. He was quite skilled; he very well could have survived even going back waiting for the river’s rough currents to subside. He likely died from eating wild potato seed pods.. before his death there wasn’t extensive research done on them to indicate they could kill anyone so eating them was perfectly reasonable according to the botany book he was reading. Only after his death did Jon Krakauer send the wild potato pods to a lab to be studied further and thus discovered the effects they actually have.

The thing is, after reading a full-length book or two, it’s far easier to digest Chris’ actions and understand who he was as a person. It actually bothers me when people say that his demise was fueled by arrogance when it was clearly a rite of passage gone wrong. If it wasn’t for the one particular seed he ate, he would have very well walked out of there alive, but the only reason this was even documented was as a result of Chris’ death.
