- Can you paint MDF Furniture? YES!
In this DIY furniture makeover video, I show you how I refinish a set of MDF drawers. Using affordable supplies and a little elbow grease, you can transform your old, worn-out furniture into a beautiful piece that looks brand new. In this step-by-step tutorial, I try to cover everything from prepping the surface to applying the final coat of paint. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or just getting started, this project is a great way to update your home decor without breaking the bank.
I won it for $5.50 in an online auction and didn't realise it was MDF until collecting it as the photos were not very clear. I spent around $15 on paint/primer/Poly and filler and $18 on new drawer runners. Much cheaper than buying a new set of drawers - which these basically turned into :)
I hope you enjoy the results of this furniture flip, I think I shocked myself!

Wow! Talk about a Cinderella. The change is amazing!
I think I surprised myself 😂 Thank you!
Lol you said “ garage and works like a treat “ I love it great job
Glad you got a giggle, I’m quickly learning that NZ has a lot of lingo that the rest of the world doesn’t use 😂😂
Fabulous makeover!
Thank you :)
On the one hand, I'm not a big fan of painted furniture, but on the other... it's MDF. Not a lot you could do with it. So this is a lovely transformation, and the trim boards on the bottom gave it real character. Nicely done. Kia kaha from Taranaki.
Aw congrats on the beautiful baby!! This cabinet turned out great!!
Pretty! Sleek and modern.
Thank you, appreciate it 😎
Love that colour combo 😊
Thank you, it could have gone either way!
The additional trim added to the base really elevates this flip - very nice job!
Thank you, I was very happy with how the trim looked. Crazy that such a small detail can make such a big difference!
Fab save on this one Cole! It's pretty rare to find a chest of drawers this narrow and tall - I'm sure it will sell like hot cakes.
MDF is a bad-boy in carpentry for sure; I've seen some really glamorous pieces made with this stuff absolutely ruined due to 'water blow-out'.
I wish that the manufacturers would seal in all of MDF surfaces (inside and out) to avoid it and hence - keep the item out of land fill for longer.
Such a great transformation!
Thank you very much 😎
JAMÁS IMAGINÉ QUE EL MUEBLE PUDIERA QUEDAR TAN HERMOSO... ... ME SUSCRIBO PARA CONTINUAR DISFRUTANDO DE SU EXCELENTE TRABAJO... GRACIAAAAAAAAS 💕❤️💯💕❤️💯💕❤️💯
Looks great! Baby wipes also work fantastic if you don't have a cloth
Great tip! Have plenty of those on hand at the moment! Thank you 😊
Wow! What a transformation. Good job, sir. 😊
Thank you very much, appreciate your kindness :)
I do a lot of MDF/composite pieces too. They will end up in the dump and are a great palette for fun finishes. Well done
I will certainly be flipping a few more, I really enjoyed working on this one. Thank you 😊
I’m off to buy some new plastic rails that are broken inside my drawers , thanks Cole, lol! ❤
Happy to be of assistance 😉 Thank you for tuning in to my videos!!
Very impressive, I would have tossed it. Well Done ! ! ! Lesson learned. Thanks, Katie
Really classy. Love it.
Thank you, appreciate that 👌🏼

@@flipitnation and rightly so 🙏
What a great flip. BTW - your baby is TOO CUTE!
I do think most of my subscribers are here for the baby shots 😂 Thank you!
Hey Cole hi from Auckland I have been flipping for 6yrs ! so you on Flipping & Upcycling Furniture page, great to connect 😊 I am toooo self conscious to do videos 😅
Hey! I have just subscribed to your channel and will have a watch, thank you! I've been dabbling in flipping for about a year but TH-cam is still quite new for me, I think around 2 months. Really enjoying it though! Certainly was a bit self conscious at the start but I'm getting more comfortable :) Lovely to virtually meet you!
Looks great! Have you ever tried to use a heat gun on stickers? Or even a blow dryer? Depends on the sticker, but most times heating that sticker adhesive up a bit makes it come off like a dream.
Nice 👍
Cheers 😎
Nice!
Thank you 😊
Hermosa!!!
Nice
¡Me encanta!
Awesome result mate gotta be stoked with that outcome for sure, way to do it bud! 👌
So stoked, much better than I anticipated. Thank you 😎
You’re more than welcome mate and I really enjoy your content and the refurbishing that you do…can’t wait for your next content so please keep them coming boss! 😃💪👍
I was a little disappointed that you didn't stick with the sage green but that's trivial (I just prefer that shade of green 😊). You totally elevated this little dresser and after the makeover you wouldn't' even realize it's MDF under there. Awesome.
I too love the sage, it was the colour we painted our sons nursery but with the black it looked very minty rather than sage. I will use it on a future piece though, it’s a lovely colour 👌🏼
@@flipitnation Indeed!
Heat gun is the best tool to remove stickers
💜
:)

Haven't seen "Crack a Woody" for years lol
I should have tried harder to get it off in one piece!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🙏🙏🙏🙏
Is it the sanding dust from the MDF or the laminate (or both- I don’t suppose inhaling either is great for you 😝) that is so problematic?
Yes I don’t don’t think either are good but Formaldehyde is suspected of being a carcinogen, and MDF has some of the highest concentration of urea-formaldehyde adhesives out of all the engineered wood products that use it. Sand safe, wear a mask 😷 👌🏼
What primer and polyurethane do you recommend
Can you use. Chalk paint on top of the primer on that
Which nozzle are you using for your pant gun?
What's the Wagner Kiwi substitute we can get from Bunnings. I am in chch and we don't get the 5000 series in NZ. and what paints are you using?
Hey there, Wagner W350 is the gun I am using in my videos and I got it from @mitre10nz for around 160NZD - I am sure they sell it or a similar model at @bunningswarehouse This isn't the cheapest or the most expensive but I highly rate it. I use Dulux Wash and Wear low sheen on most of my projects. Hope that helps, cheers
@@flipitnation awesome !! I iust started flipping as a hobby and i think i have seen a few of your pieces on sale in marketplace. Love your work. I use the fusion mineral paints but keen to try some other paints.
I am yet to try the mineral paints but would like to. Flipping is a great hobby, very addictive! The is a great furniture group on Facebook called Flipping & Upcycling Furniture New Zealand incase you haven’t joined that yet :)
Great restoration and work Mate, look's cool have a nice day !!!. Brian UK !!!. 👍👍🪚🪚📐📐.
Hey Brian, thank you again! Appreciate you tuning in! 👌🏼
