How To Paint MDF Furniture 2024 | Drawer Makeover

  • Can you paint MDF Furniture? YES!
    In this DIY furniture makeover video, I show you how I refinish a set of MDF drawers. Using affordable supplies and a little elbow grease, you can transform your old, worn-out furniture into a beautiful piece that looks brand new. In this step-by-step tutorial, I try to cover everything from prepping the surface to applying the final coat of paint. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or just getting started, this project is a great way to update your home decor without breaking the bank.
    I won it for $5.50 in an online auction and didn't realise it was MDF until collecting it as the photos were not very clear. I spent around $15 on paint/primer/Poly and filler and $18 on new drawer runners. Much cheaper than buying a new set of drawers - which these basically turned into :)
    I hope you enjoy the results of this furniture flip, I think I shocked myself!

    On the one hand, I'm not a big fan of painted furniture, but on the other... it's MDF. Not a lot you could do with it. So this is a lovely transformation, and the trim boards on the bottom gave it real character. Nicely done. Kia kaha from Taranaki.

    Fab save on this one Cole! It's pretty rare to find a chest of drawers this narrow and tall - I'm sure it will sell like hot cakes.
    MDF is a bad-boy in carpentry for sure; I've seen some really glamorous pieces made with this stuff absolutely ruined due to 'water blow-out'.
    I wish that the manufacturers would seal in all of MDF surfaces (inside and out) to avoid it and hence - keep the item out of land fill for longer.

    Looks great! Have you ever tried to use a heat gun on stickers? Or even a blow dryer? Depends on the sticker, but most times heating that sticker adhesive up a bit makes it come off like a dream.

    I was a little disappointed that you didn't stick with the sage green but that's trivial (I just prefer that shade of green 😊). You totally elevated this little dresser and after the makeover you wouldn't' even realize it's MDF under there. Awesome.

    • @flipitnation
      @flipitnation  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I too love the sage, it was the colour we painted our sons nursery but with the black it looked very minty rather than sage. I will use it on a future piece though, it’s a lovely colour 👌🏼

    Is it the sanding dust from the MDF or the laminate (or both- I don’t suppose inhaling either is great for you 😝) that is so problematic?

    • @flipitnation
      @flipitnation  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I don’t don’t think either are good but Formaldehyde is suspected of being a carcinogen, and MDF has some of the highest concentration of urea-formaldehyde adhesives out of all the engineered wood products that use it. Sand safe, wear a mask 😷 👌🏼

I use Dulux Wash and Wear low sheen on most of my projects. Hope that helps, cheers
