Bateman being self aware enough of himself, understands that being a psychopathic murderer is not good. so he tries to act like a good person so he can fit in with broader society. but because he also has an inferiority complex he lashes out at anyone he perceives as better. and because the people around him are generally disinterested in anyone but themselves he doesn't get the attention his mental illness needs and he, either for real or imagined. snaps, and goes on a murder spree so he can feel like he is in control of something.
and thats ALL because of "decadence" somehow?

I just visited New York City for the first time last week. One night at dinner I overheard a conversation from the table next to us - judging from their expensive outfits, wine bottles, and haughty attitude, they came off as very similar to the elite in American Psycho. They discussed their previous night of debauchery rather unimpressively. They bragged about ditching out of an expensive Broadway play early because they got bored and didn’t care about the money. Their voices just sounded so… dull. Monotone. All the money in the world and they couldn’t find happiness in expensive things or events.

Well clearly you don't read. Yes, through out history that's exactly how the world had worked. There is literally literature, historical text, paintings the create a picture of the people and their mindsets and you factor the results of that period in time. One small but most known example is the fall of the Roman empires. There was signs of its collapse. 1 sign was that people were involved in plenty of Degenerecy. It wasn't the only sign. The other being the deterioration of infrastructure. There was once a time where major cities were a sign of progress, strength, culture etc. But what are they now if not pot hole ridden, crime ridden he'll holes. I live in LA. And it's not what it was once viewed as. I've also served. And I've seen first hand the demorilization of its military. Bad leadership and corruption filled is also a sign of hard times coming. All meanwhile our enemies what we would consider the barbarians are getting stronger. China , Russia, Iran are all getting stronger. Maybe not militarily but their resolve is growing. Sure those countries are filled with corruption. But they hold on to their traditions. Something so powerful that people are willing to die for it and not even oppression can extinguish. That's how France lost to Nazis. France was so demoralized from within that they did not have the fighting spirit they had in the first world War. I've heard many vets asking what they are even fighting for anymore. A fat, lazy, plastic, soft, corrupt, man hating society? You are a fool if you think we have progressed past that. That's why they say it's a cycle. You may not see it in your life time, but your kids or their kids will. As I said, I've seen the state of the military. They are supposed to represent the best of us? I've met soldier who have told me first hand that in case of a war, they would rather go to prison then fight a war. These are volunteers BTW. Met many criminals, bad leadership placed by corrupt politicians, low moral of people that want to get out as quick as possible. And you think this only applies to the military? Bad education, bad health due to inviduals drowning in unhealthy behaviors. And somehow you think these are not ideal conditions for bad times?

You think the 18 year old boys storming the beaches of Normandy wanted to breakdown and cry, ofc they did but they kept their composure and kept moving forward bc that was their duty. I can kind of relate to him. I once did something really stupid. For some reason I wanted to find out how people would react. I wanted to feel important. I wanted to be seen. No one reacted. I wasn't seen. There were people who knew this ~someone~ who's called "Yustyna" and she did this thing but they didn't know it was me. When they found out it was me, they didn't react. They ignored it. I didn't expect them to react to it but they ignore it as if it's normal?! I also wanted to get attention from my teachers but when I got the best grades in class, they ignored me. I also feel like people don't listen. I can talk for hours and no one will care. But if I talk 10 minutes about the other person, we're best friends. I'm still searching for someone who's willing to talk and listen to me. I just want to be heard and hear other people's HONEST opinions but almost no one is like that... So many people lie and have a fake smile. Almost always when I get attention, it's because the other person is jealous of me.
This probably happened because my parents are bad parents: I was depressed. While I was crying, I told my mother I can't sleep because I'm crying the entire time. She hugged me and didn't say anything. She didn't even consider taking me to therapy. I needed to deal with my problems alone. I asked for help so often but no one helped me. 😭 You really can't imagine how often I asked for help... T-T I also got panick attacks and I feel like I was in constant survival mode. I looked normal but I was broken or even nothing inside... With that said: "If I relate to a character, he's the one I relate to!"

Nice timing I just finished watching the movie and I decided to seek out more information on the film’s layers. This analysis of the world and men is too accurate to myself as a 16 year old young man and many others I know and see on the internet. We are weak in the mind and in spirit. I have all but lost my purpose, creativity and will to live. I can narrow it down to overdosing on internet and all the filth on it, bad sleep habits, double life around my family etc. I hate what I’ve become and I can’t seem to break free from this. I will try but I will almost definitely fail and continue to live this decrepit life I currently live in. If anyone has read this please don’t be like me if you don’t feel or relate to this that is good and I wish I was still like that. Stay innocent and enjoy life. ✌🏼

The society Patrick Bateman lives in is late stage capitalism. Not saying you’re wrong about the idea of moral degradation, but in practice/historically “decadence” has been used to oppress people who don’t fit in to others “moral compass” (LGBT people, women who don’t fit into people’s idea of what a woman should be, etc.) The economic system rewards conformity, consumption, selfishness, and shifty personal morals. Replace “decadence” with “late stage capitalism” and we’re on our way to some real solutions

  • @МатвейЛапин-н4ц
    @МатвейЛапин-н4ц ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is an interesting point of view, but in the middle of the video I just realized that maybe, just maybe, it is a little wrong to blame society for all our problems? The world is full of decadence, no one has a purpose, good times create weak men, blah blah blah. But does it really matter? I mean, man, if you need a global crisis to turn you into a weapon capable of doing things, doesn't that make you weak? And by the way, can we really call today's reality "good times"? There are conflicts everywhere, crisis after crisis, people are always depressed - is this the "good times"? So why can't it create strong men? Just because of material wealth? Is that a sufficient reason? All I want to say is that no matter the time, you can always become the better version of yourself just doing shit done. Finding your purpose in life, its a purpose itself. If you want to be a doggy that suffices the needs of the society in "hard times", fine, that's enough for me, but does it really make you strong? And if you make yourself better, while no one needs it, and you are looking for your purpose, while no one needs it either, does that make you weak? Society has a huge impact on our lives, I cant deny it, but it hasnt taken our lives under full control. Yet. So, to summarize, I think if you want to be a superman - do it. But if you just want to be accepted by society, then what's the probkem? Become acceptable if you want it so badly. It is your choice to make, thats all im saying

  • @AmyMarieJackson

It's always very interesting to see young men seriously "identify" with Patrick because of how obviously it shows they are incapable of proper media analysis. Too many people watch films and digest what is directly in front of them, with no thought into the themes, messages, and subtext. Having read the book, the film of AP isn't as good at getting the subtext across, but Christ ... you have literal teenagers who have completely missed the point of the film idolising Bateman when they are the type of man Bret Easton Ellis was criticising by writing the book.
AP is a caricature of the damaging effects of high society, late stage capitalism, consumerism, narcissism, misogyny, classism, racism. Identifying with Bateman means you are part of the problem. Telling the story through his perspective is a way of making the viewer confront the messages of the narrative. It has the unintended consequence of causing men to think "main character = good guy" and thinking the story is a message to society not to piss off men unless they snap and become violent.

Patrick doesn't just reflect rich people, but also modern companies, saying all the "right" things, but ruthlessly wreaking havoc when they think no one's watching or there won't be consequences. Pushing for civil causes at home but using slave labor in their manufacturing overseas.

That's a different take, but I think the actual problem depicted in the movie is how fake and status obsessed everyone is. Bateman "just wants to fit in," but the competition of trying to be higher status than everyone else while at the same time realizing that half of the people he knows don't even know his name (and no one listens to him) enrages him to the point where he has to violently murder someone.
Of course that's even more true today and has trickled down from New York business types to the rest of society because of reality shows about the lives of status hungry rich people and social media. The moral isn't something about decadence destroying men or society, its that you have to be an authentic person and live an authentic life where what you say, do and think matters, not what you are wearing or what you own.

Depression is at a high I think in part due to growing wealth inequality and also because people just not remembering or knowing how bad and miserable the hard times were. Or how miserable "hard times" currently are, because of coarse there are places in the world you can go right now if you want to experience hard times... or even to experience violent forms of meaning e.g. you can go fight for Ukraine right now if you value the West/liberty/defending people against invasion etc. Or fight for Russia if you believe in the rhetoric of "strong men" style leaders like Putin and his claims about Western decadense.

@Levi Chicwown actually, he had his job and money because of his dad. His dad owned the company that he had a job at. He barely did any work at all. He just mingled with his equally shallow friends. Then after that, he would go and murder people. He was obsessed with celebs and the opinions of others. He would be one of those “celebrity twitter people” if American psycho took place today. The only thing he worked for was his muscles and his hair. Peak copium video, this film has barely anything to do with male masculinity (atleast as intended by the director, you can have your own interpretation of it but that doesn't really effect what the makers had in mind).
The film is about the "hypebeast" type of culture found in 80s rich wall street working male demographic, and their hyper obsession with materialistic wealth, beauty and fashion. The movie pretty much perfectly predicts how unstopped materialism and a constant rat race will eventually lead to the top of the ladder of society looking identical to each other, with no discernable characteristics to set one another apart, as seen by how similar all the fellow employees of Bateman look and act. They have similar hairstyles, fashion sense, humour and ideology, and will lose their breath at the slightest notice of falling behind their competition.

Honestly I’m mixed about this video.
    1. For one, the thumbnail is some “rad trad” grifter clickbait that I think doesn’t do justice to the good points that the video makes.
    2. I don’t think the movie is about what happens when “masculinity is lost”, it’s about the poisonous twisting of masculinity and the negative aspects of it that harm men and those around them. Patrick embodies both 80s materialistic hedonist decadence and (yeah I know this phrase gets misused a lot) toxic masculinity. Superficially, he would be considered an “alpha male”. A strong, athletic, successful man who constantly stresses the importance of his work (which he barely does) and is in a leadership position. He has sex with a bunch of women and has tons of money. These are all things considered “manly” and “masculine”. It’s more about the corruption of masculinity than a lack of masculinity. It’s what happens when being a man is boiled down to being physically strong, financially successful, dominant, capable of violence, “hardworking”, and sexually active.
    3. The idea of needing conflict to make men strong isn’t true at all. War doesn’t do anything good for anyone. I think if you need war or struggle to be strong or “manly”, you aren’t much of a man.
    4. Pretty good analysis of Patrick and how his decadent materialism has made him empty. And I do agree that staying in your comfort zone will kill you. I just don’t think that war or poverty needs to occur to keep people from falling into complacency and selfishness.
    5. I think saying the 80s had no conflict isn’t true at all. The Cold War and all the associated proxy conflicts, apartheid, AIDS crisis, crack epidemic, poverty, street gangs, domestic terrorism, etc. basically all the shit Patrick pretends to care about. While he only talks about these issues for social approval, they still are real issues that were happening back then.
