This video explores the message of American Psycho on modernity and post modernism through Patrick Batemans struggle in the film called American Psycho. Patrick Bateman is wallstreet investor working for a big business and yet his mask of sanity is slipping in American Psycho. Patrick Batemans millions of dollars and investments in art and materialism is not enough for him because money doesn't buy him happiness. This is why American Psycho sigma male compilations are so popular.

Real self care is knowing when you or other people are putting you down or making you make bad decisions. NOT cancelling on friends because you just made plans with other friends. Also, the way we comfort people now is dogshit. If your friend makes a mistake and fucks up, it's normalized now to just tell them that they're perfect and they'll never do wrong. What happens then is the person makes the same mistake, because they never learned from it. So IMO, most self care promotes a garbage mentality, and social media amplifies that to such a degree I doubt any of us gen z are gonna make it to 30 without a mental disorder.

The movie is about how these violent tendencies, in fantasy or made very real, are not an outlet. There's plenty of reasons why men would like "American Psycho". The first one is pretty much the content of your video. This being that they (and you) almost completely misunderstand it. Let's get this straight: the film is a self-proclaimed feminist satire and a scathing comment on white male fragility and toxicity. The movie is an important feminist film made by feminists and it is literally laughing out loud at men. Another reason would be that there are plenty of smart men out there who actually do understand the film and can appreciate this satire and how incredibly intelligent the film is. These men actually get it and appreciate its feminist message. Other reasons would be that the film is incredibly well written, directed, shot, acted and highly entertaining. To put it simply, the film "American Psycho" is an iconic feminist satire that not only attacks male fragility but also attacks consumerism and the male dominated corporate culture of the 1980's. Now that we have clarified this, if you are one of the men who took this video at face value and completely misunderstood the film, I suggest you rewatch it. While doing so, please work to understand the satire and try not to fall into the role of playing the victim like this content creator would encourage and support. Learning to laugh at ourselves is an extremely valuable skill and the film encourages men to do so. The attempt to co-opt the meaning of the film by the creator of this video essay and his subsequent attempt to change its true meaning and intent as an unapologetic, hilarious and horrific exploration of toxic masculinity wrapped up in a brilliant satire into some sort of examination of the supposed cycle of men's suffering, repression or examination of the Shadow Self is quite simply an utter failure at analysis, a complete misunderstanding of the film and a blatant inability to grasp satire. In fact, this analysis was so bad that it reminded me of that time Ronald Regan thought "Born in the USA" was a patriotic song and used it in his campaign like so many others who followed him.
"I very much think it’s a feminist film. It’s a satire about how men compete with each other and how in this hyper-real universe we created, women are even less important than your tan or your suit or where you summer and to me, even though the women are all sort of tragic and killed, it’s about how men perceive them and treat them."

After researching a bit, I think the movie was trying to portray just how self centered people are, especially the wealthier business men (as the movie's portrayal). Bateman definitely did kill people in brutal ways, but after a while he started going insane, imagining murders just because he wanted to be recognized, but everyone was literally so stuck up their own ass they wouldn't even recognize him even when he was murdering people.
I imagine it being like this:
Bateman: Hey. I killed people, will continue to kill people, and I like doing it. Isn't that awful?
Some Businessman: Sure, Richard, sure. Anyway, have you seen my new business card?

Another story that has a similar appeal is berserk it’s a story where there is no mask, and (almost) everyone is their darkest self. It explores the horrible consequences of this as well as the positives. We see people committing unforgivable acts left and right, and we follow someone who, while isn’t as bad as the ones he stands against, could be described as a monster, while being so much more than that. Berserk is a story about a man resisting and giving into his darker self, and facing the consequences of others doing the same, it’s a story about not only determination and perseverance through depression and pain, but about finding the balance between your best and your worst, showing who you truly are but doing what you believe is morally right. There are far more messages in berserk than these, but I would never be able to explain them all, it’s one of the greatest and most impactful stories of all time, inspiring AOT, dark souls, and countless other dark stories. And it changed my life more than any other media.

Another thing I think was missed was that Jean was the only one in the movie that was different to everyone else. You can see that in the conversation between them in the apartment. When Bateman was probing her and asking her questions, he was gauging what type of person she was and realised that she was genuinely passionate about the things she was saying. Additionally, she was the only person in the film that saw him as a person and didn't try to appease him or compete with his ego. He saw that she genuinely cared for him and because of this Bateman was then hesitant to kill her because she embodied the very ideal that he sought after, which is to live authentically without a mask. So he decides to let her go, fearing that eventually his psychopathic tendencies

It is a man who has become a monster, living in the skin of a human, trying to fit in and be normal, yet also at war with everything he hates about himself and his life. Patrick wasn't always like this, and the book emphasizes his disfunctionality and awkwardness. Hes a severely mentally disturbed person who could have been a perfectly normal member of society if the world he lived in wasn't a cheap facade of pretty lights and fun sensations, cheaply masking the cold, ugly, shallow reality. Patrick has lost what made him human, and somewhere deep down, he wants to get it back, but he knows that its too late. Men today love it because its relatable.

Yes, "American Psycho" is about shallowness of yuppie corporate culture but Patrick is not "man trying to incorporate shadow, driven by frustration of bland postmodern world". Yes, it is an indictment of corporatism itself. Bateman only has his prestigious job due to nepotism, and his entire circle quite literally is not shown doing work once in the film, showing the purposelessness of their jobs and the extent of their ill-gotten gains. All that is left is a dick measuring contest of materialism and status. When an insecure and lost character like Bateman exists in this ruthless hierarchy, an already unhinged psychopath is triggered.

I believe that, although it provides entertainment and a key aspect to the plot, his psychopathy is actually used as a tool to point out the modern mans suppression of his true self. Although he is different than the common man, he is the same in that he leads some semblance of a double life just as the rest of society does. As I stated previously, his mental instability serves to highlight and accentuate the plasticity that is the manifestation of ones self in society.

I don't think the subtext is any deeper than a simple reminder of how seeking validation from external sources is a neverending chase for dopamine. It seems so relatable because everyone on the planet is guilty of "needing" our "want". Wants and needs are different; and interestingly enough, tend to yeild opposite results for our well being. It's never enough, and it only pulls us farther away from ourselves. The monologue during Patrick's morning routine summarizes all of that perfectly - which he delivers while staring at his reflection in an artwork from a book about liberation from social injustice.

I think alot of people miss interpret the ending as Patrick having imagined the entire debacle when in reality the scene in Paul Allen's apartment proves the opposite.
Painters painting the walls over with white and the realtor whole ass gaslights Patrick telling him that he needs to never come back here and "to not make anymore trouble."
Patrick went on that murder spree he killed all those people caused all that damage but it didn't matter because his dad owns the company. He has all the money and It literally does not matter what Patrick does or doesn't do because he has no agency over the outcome or direction of his life, in that he truly doesn't exist.
Also there is a huge element of how Patrick's social status plays with his victims and the irony that he was only pursued once he killed Paul Allen.
Patrick perpatrates the objectification of women and the devaluing of human life.

I would agree. Only to a point though. The way the cop cars explode. And his confusion at such show that it is at least in part in his head.

White is the singular color painted on EVERY place about to be sold. The realtor probably saw signs of his tampering--possibly spattering red paint all over, making a mess she had to clean up. Even all of Patrick's real emotions are shallow and underdeveloped, as Jean saw in his notebook. Nothing, especially all of the hilarious crazy overblown murders with chainsaws somehow working long after the trigger is released and magically landing in the exact right position and place, was real. The exploding cop cars certainly weren't. Patrick's insane delusions are his only release. He knows he couldn't get away with this stuff, which is why he doesn't actually insult the bartender aloud.

Why is it so hard to accept that people like this truly exist? When you have money and power to such a degree that business cards become a competition for me when he goes back to the apartment and has the conversation with the old lady she clearly states “don’t come back” knowing what he did and he sets him up asking “did you see the add?” To which he says “yes” and she reply’s “there was no add” and also the final scene the conversation with the lawyer who is clearly covering him up giving the protagonist hints to shut the fuck up basically, as to the drawings he just can’t handle it anymore causing him clear sings of regret and pain because of the atrocities he committed having only that form of expression the only illusion on the movie it’s the ATM screen saying “Feed me stray cat” and the police car explosion.

i think this is missing some very important things the films tells us about patrick. he’s not just repressing consciously to keep his job, he repeatedly expresses genuine desire to fit in with others. he literally screams about getting a seat at dorsia when kills paul allen and is horrified when he realizes allen has a nicer apartment. it seems more that he wants the approval of others around him in their power game, which he is consistently losing. his fiancée is cheating on him and his own affair partner is a junkie dating a homosexual, his coworkers constantly talk about how shitty he is when they think he’s not there, nobody likes his business card and he gets laughed out of dorsia. his only peer in the movie who clearly genuinely likes him is lewis, who he thinks is a giant dickhead. the murders seem to be an assertion of his position in the social hierarchy and desire for recognition. he gets more erratic hoping to get caught, but even the real estate agent who finds all the bodies won’t give him the satisfaction of actually acknowledging it. this culminates in him bragging about killing paul allen to his lawyer, as if he’s hoping to impress him with his murder of someone so respected in the company. the theme of the film is the absurdity of this class of yuppies who are hungry for power and recognition and they seek it by making themselves unrecognizable among a crowd of identical power hungry psychopaths. to say that bateman’s murders are an expression of his shadow is to imply that they’re unrelated or even opposed to the general psychopathy of yuppie culture.

Dude, you're absolutely right. The guy who made the video missed the entire point. Bateman has no "Shadow-self". He a psychopath who admits to having no emotions whatsoever. The character shows no alternative self having to be buried, there is none.

I felt this exact thing in the military. Every emotion that he described in the video felt relatable. It wasn't until I left the organization that I was finally able to let my inner self out. I was no longer just a clone repeating a perpetual cycle productivity pushing and commands. Trying to to fit in always and never being true to the self. and if you do try to break away, you are ostracized and condemned. I'm happy where I am now. Different.
