I know people who consider themselves OG's in the lowrider scene put their nose up to those of us who are "new to the game" trying to learn and gain knowledge about lowriding. Total transparency on this videos “speak on it topic”. The night before I filmed this, one of the largest hydraulic manufacturers/distributors in the country couldn’t make the time to talk with me about my build and help me source the parts I needed. I was completely blown away by the disrespect I received from the sales staff. Not to mention I couldn’t get a straight answer from the staff about a technical question I had about a part they produce. It’s a safe bet that I won’t spend a nickel with this company ever! Period! I was still a little hot about the whole deal the following morning. I’ve sense solved my problem. Everything is all good.

Solid video, with some real good content and really good welding info and procedures you touch on a lot of situations most people will run in to with gas machines and materials. I'm glad you got away from those 2lbs rolls I did a x frame with a spool gun and it seemed like I was going through a roll of wire every couple hours

You did a really good job on this. I would be proud of that frame if it were mine. I asked my friends if I could build my frame at home, they were like yeah its possible to build your frame at home, but then they were like can YOU do it, no lol. So I had to pay someone to do it just for safety sake. I could just see plates falling off while driving down the road if I did it. It always brings an image to my mind and there is even a word for it in Russian called razvaluha, it means car thats falling apart as it goes.

I have used Globalwest my 62 Impala drives like a corvette. I have a Globalwest tubular control arms for sale. They brand new. They are ones for coil spring. I can tell you the back story if your interested. I will sale them half off.

I used moser axles inside mine ..they have clips.drove a long way on it 8 batts

For grinding your frame if you do it… go with a 7” grinder… it goes super quick. If you want to do it.
U saved a buttload of money on the steel and doing it yourself. Good job. I enjoyed the class! Did u recess the front of the engine cradle before the plate. It will be a tight fit on the tie rods if not
After talking with a well known builder in the X-frame game, I made the choice not to do that. There are ways around it. He explained everything to me, and I felt like I wanted to try his method first. Even though it’ll be a pain in the butt to change it, I could always do it in the future. His advice and logic seemed pretty sound to me. So, we’ll just have to see.
Bro! The hole question was mine. I wasn’t sure if there are any fuel line or drain holes or anything critical beyond some of the obvious bolt-on stuff without having my car home as a reference. But you covered it by going over the “locating holes” for me. Thanks!!
Hey man, I couldn’t remember who asked. I’m getting old. 🥴. Some impalas did run lines through the driveshaft tunnel. I have no idea what years did that. Assuming that my car is 100% factory, which I believe it was. The fuel line went through the driveshaft tunnel. But… that doesn’t mean that it would have to stay that way. The freedom to move things is most certainly there. Factory brake line and fuel line clips with have to be removed and reattached if your planning a frame wrap. Other than that, not much else to note.

Great video and work as well. I have a 64 impala SS too and started disassembling it and I was wanting to know what in your opinion is a good budget friendly, get the job done welding machine that i can get. Preferably something that's gasless.
Hey bro, thanks for the kind words. As far as budget welders go, I’d have to say any Lincoln, Miller or Eastwood big box store welder will do the job. Duty cycle is the most important option to me. Try to buy a machine with at least a 60% duty cycle. Also, I would highly recommend getting a gas machine. Nothing wrong with flux core, but I think in the long run you’ll be happy with the better quality weld. That’s just my two cents. Best of luck with your project. Thanks for the support 👊🏻👊🏻

So after watching your part about teaching welding and multiple passes to make it structural, after tacking on your plates and making the first welding pass, you made multiple more passes over the first weld beads?
Yes and no. In some areas of the frame that I thought might see the most stress, I welded it like I would a schedule 40 pipe. In other areas I just welded it in a single pass. This was a trial and error kind of thing for me. I’ll see what works the best and adjust accordingly on the next one I do.
Thanks for all the insight. I was curious because you are a professional welder. I know you used MIG, but can a frame wrap be reasonably done with TIG in your opinion?
Honestly you could in theory. But it wouldn’t make much practical sense. Mig is plenty strong enough. In my humble opinion, frame prep and plate prep are the most important aspect of the whole project.
@gemcitywelding7234 I get you. It's just that I have more experience with TIG and own a TIG. I don't mind going out and getting a MIG. I was thinking I may need MIG only because of there seems to be big gaps when I see people wrap their frames and TIG seems to need tighter fit up.
New question…will you have the frame blasted a 2nd time to get all the weld slag off before paint?
No I didn’t plan on it. I have some heavy duty twisted wire wheels that fit my hand grinder. They do a great job of removing almost anything. That should work for me.
Would a Miller 141 be good enough it says up to 3/16 which I plan to use or better with 220 for better penetration?
So.. the Miller 141 is a great machine but it does lack in one area. Duty Cycle. The rated duty cycle is 20%@90 amps. In my humble opinion, I would choose a machine with a higher duty cycle. And I would also recommend that anything over 3/16 should have a multi pass filler weld if possible in the weld joint. Hope that helps with your decision making. Thanks for watching the show 👊🏻

Hey billy, fantastic job you’re doing so far! I’m 14:31 in the video and I had a question I’ve wanted to ask for a while. How are you shaping/bending the 3/16 metal ? Looks very difficult. I even see people make a press tool for this. The way you’ve done this makes it look damn near factory! Lol
Hey thanks bro,
I’m using large “C” clamps and pre bending some of the curved pieces with a bench vice. I’m also tack welding a little at a time, and then using the heat to my advantage to help bend and shape the steel. Once you get it hot it will become playable. What settings did you have your welder at? Cuz I’m about to do my own frame also
So that’s a tricky question to answer. The settings will depend on your machine, and how much voltage and amperage you’re running to your machine. If you’re running a 110 V machine and welding 3/16 steel plate, I would recommend setting the amperage or voltage to its maximum, and try to match the wire speed to that. It’ll take some getting used to, but at least it will have enough penetration with such a small unit. Think of it in terms of a car with a manual transmission, the gas pedal and clutch have to be able to work together. Amperage and wire speed are no different. I hope that helps. Feel free to ask any more questions.

Im from LA and been around lowriding (no car) all my life. I wouldn't associate myself with lowriding tho. Fools in the game are trash. From shops to car owners. Most of these fools are broke ass levas who act like they are bawling but they are actually not. Lying ass fools burning their name for a few bucks. Keep doing your thing Patron.

Thanks I really appreciate that. I would do another one, but it wouldn’t be until the spring/summer time. My garage is kinda small for this kind of work. With my body off the frame, there just isn’t enough space to accommodate another X-Frame.
what brand and model of welding machine are you using sir?
Lincoln electric Pro 140. It’s an older model, but you can still get them at most Lowes stores.
