Rim vs Disc Brakes

  • Rim brakes versus disc brakes - which one is best?! Both are awesome and get the job done, but for trials riding, it's tough to beat rim brakes with ground rims. The flex in the spokes makes just enough of a difference when it comes to precision - and if you were really stacking them up against each other, you would also consider the danger of bending rotors when riding super technical terrain on your trials bikes. The newer bikes actually come with a built-in guard over the rear brake rotor!

The tour de france used rim brakes for decades without issues, so they are good enough.
There's pros and cons to both, but I prefer rim for ease of maintenance and weight saving.
Disc can be a pain to fix, with bent rotors, contaminated rotors/pads, bubbles in hydraulic system, pads not moving evenly, but they are great when they work.

I ride a road (Masi Gran Corsa) and a Raleigh C30 hybrid. They are both rim brake bikes, and they are going to stay that way. The Raleigh seems to have the option to fit a disc brake on the front wheel, but I'm pretty convinced I don't need the extra braking power in muddy situations because that is almost never happened to me. I avoid mud IF there is mud on the road (never happened). When off-road, I have gotten muddy a couple of times, and that's when I realized the reason for discs. I only ride off-road every once in a while, and I avoid the mud. I can certainly see why discs on mountain bikes, and would think it's probably foolishness to have rim brakes, for someone like me (someone who never competes like this man).

Im a big fan of racing, even if the rim brakes are more effective,i dont want to experience strong g-forces whe going 50+ km/h on a bike(even if the g-force where weak,im just lazy to fight g-force XD)

Rim brakes to scare the neighbours, they squeak like a banshee but stopped means stopped. Discs are better for modulation and flowy street moves. You definitely feel a touch of flex, it’s subtle but can be spooky in critical moves. They’re also quiet so Joe Public doesn’t get so quickly upset when you’re sessioning a feature in town. For comp I like disc front & rim back.

Some people just have the perfect timing to ruin someone else's time.

Old enough to have grown up with rim brakes but now use disk.
I liked V brakes a lot and while disk generally perform better, especially in the wet, they can be extremely finicky to get perfect whereas rim brakes are very easy to set up and know it's perfect.
There is almost some magic or luck 8nvilved with hydraulic disk brakes between the air in the lines, like any tiny bit, or pads that may have gotten a bit of contamination or compound I find some brakes working incredibly good, others work good but not the eye popping grab of others.
I just find them frustrating because you can rebleed but you never really know if all the air is gone. Maybe it is all gone but it's the pad but again, even sanded they can be an issue.
LOL, maybe I just suck at it not having a ton of experience but honestly not the hugest fan. Oh, and why is it that if you give them a quick spray with water they suddenly perform amazing?
Too many variables that I cannot easily rule out to get them working perfect. That and every brand has a different procedure despite being the same basic system. Ugh.
    Rant over.

I heard another difference. Like no brake is perfect. And if you have your rim brake slipped for 1 mm it's gonna be about 1 mm or a rim move. But if your disc brake does so you need to adjust the distance to a rim and it's gonna be much more.
I have 2 sets of rim Magura and I couldn't force them to work well. So disc ones is much easier for me to install.

Hydraulic pressure. This gives more power and better modulation. If it didn't, downhill racers would use rim brakes.

I'd say cooling and better for all terrain and weather. Rim brakes in the wet and mud are far worse than discs.
Also don't have the effect of slightly warped wheels (it happens when you hit stuff) affecting how much grip the brakepads have.
