Frazer Update 2018!

  • Hi, it's time for another Frazer Update! We'll need to put a set of frost plugs in the old girl before we can go for a test drive... Hard to believe this tired old engine is still going strong(ish) at 70 years!
Everything else on the Frazer keeps working well; all I did this year was an oil change, a new battery (the other one was very old), and then it popped out a frost plug one day and I coasted into the yard as she was getting hot...
Special thanks to the legendary Agent 533 for taking time to stop in at the old junkyard while he was in town! It was a treat to hang out and waste his time with our nonsense for a while.
The second half of my interview with Mr Randy Kerdoon can be found at:
Talking About Cars #127 podcast on radio.com
    or at:
    talkingaboutcars.net/
Thanks again to Mr. Kerdoon for taking a few minutes to talk about cars with us; I admit it is a subject I can go on about for sure!
Thanks to everyone who subscribed, and for all of your likes and comments...
In case you were wondering: I am still working on the $5 roadster, the SM, and the '60 Fury! Lots of vids on each of those fun projects on the way, as well as the rest of the Model A project, and the final installment in the 1951 Chevy Bel Air "Will it Run?" series!
All the best from me and Frankers and the rest of the fine gentlemen who help out on these projects just for the laughs...Cheers!

If you dig down into the Frazer "miniseries", at one point we see how Scott rebuilt it with commonplace material and tools. He also "manufactured" the shift knob and the trunk handle - license plate light.

    "Je Suis Pret" indeed.
What a cool car. Watched the whole Frazer playlist...
That steering wheel fix, from welding to fiberlass and bondo, now finished with the "JE SUIS PRET" emblem is the most gorgeous thing on the car!

    FRANKERS!!
Through the magic of CWM SpectraVision, Scott again has facial hair and the trees are sorta green again.
Wow, those freeze plugs might be the easiest to remove I've ever witnessed on any engine!
'Course, that might explain why one of 'em decided to hitchhike home on its' own, too...
Sharp eyes catch a glimpse of the CWM decal on the right flank of the ol' Fraser, too.
Mine are on my main tool box in the garage - and of course, the back window of the GTX. :-)
Folks in small town SE USA give it the odd look at shows, heads tilted in puzzlement like the RCA Victor dog.
The pups do love going for a ride, don't they? Mine insists on shotgun when it's time for the weekly dump run,
gets absolutely worked up over it, turns into a supervisor as I load the pickup, rushing me along.
It does make a mundane chore a bit more fun. :-)
Enjoyed it as much as any episode, sir. I give it a Same ol' Shitake thumbs up!
    Y'all be safe up there,
    -Ed on the Ridge

The late John Parker was a friend of mine. His Kaiser, Frazer, Henry J and Willys Aero restorations were well known. John gave me a copy of "Last Onslaught on Detroit" nearly 40 years ago. On a boss located at the front of the cylinder head there should be a number stamped. It should be 6.8 or 7.3 denoting the compression ratio. If you haven't seen it already. On Willys L6-226 engines the 7.3 combined with the 2 bbl. WCD Carter carb will give you that 10 extra HP. The same should apply to the Frazer.... Should you actually rebuild the old girl you might be surprised how smooth and quiet they run.

Jeeze. A sea urchin reference. I stand in awe. The Continental engine is the Urgent Urchin. Freeze plugs. Some kind of hocus-pocus. A steel millimeter between reliability and disaster. Now I know why my CWM tee was mysteriously weeping coolant.
Je suis pret. The Frazer tells the ship's steward to retrieve her jewels from the safe so she looks her best during the sinking. 5 minutes of video on horn button changeout is time well spent. Most of us old car guys have similar stories, but we don't have vids. instead we suffer captive passengers our tales of amazing fitments between diverse years and makes.
Agent 533 is always a welcome site. Peanut brittle dry, and also very good with the camera. In fact, the camera work is generally superior in these vids, as is the editing.
With 533 and Dean, you have the full spectrum of car nuttery.
And, sorry Jay, but this is the kind of acceleration that makes a great car video. It's actually "savory". I'm surprised Scott doesn't get Leno honks while waiting for an opening big enough for a cruise ship on the Alberta Autobahn. Guess you guys are just everyday people to your neighbors.

Barry - "Agent 533 is always a welcome site. Peanut brittle dry, and also very good with the camera. In fact, the camera work is generally superior in these vids, as is the editing." I was thinking exactly the same. 533 could pass as Scott's son, with his dry, focused and intelligent input. He's one of my favorite agents and Frankers loves him too! Scott - keep up the great work, we love it all and aspire secretly, to earn our own agent numbers someday! Chuck in NE Kansas

@@MrWoodfiddler, it's magic when Scott and 533 get with the arcane referencing!
I shouldn't forget to laud Scott for the sound. The scenes with Tom, where the action gets progressively farther away from the mic, are great. You still understand every word. It lends depth to the video. Maybe an accident, but it takes skill to recognize and utilize a good accident.
Last, How many of us have had 4 or 5 cars, and not one running (raises hand emphatically)?

Nice to see the Frazer is still going. Nice save on the center logo. I got super lucky with freeze plugs many years ago, over 40. I had a '74 Datsun 710 I bought when I was at Ft Campbell, KY. I was with a couple friends up above Albany NY on our way back to Ft. Campbell. We stayed at my Grandmother's house for the night and went to leave the next morning and the engine just didn't sound right. Opened the hood and could see ice sticking out the side of the engine. My first thought was 'oh s&^%', but pushed the car in the garage, let it thaw out, tapped the freeze plugs in, got some antifreeze and we were on our way. Not sure but I think the freeze plugs were still stuck to the ice. I really liked that car, a nice burgundy with slotted wheels with C50 13 tires on the back. They were at least 10" wide. Oh well, thanks for sharing. Really looking forward to seeing you finish the Fury, but also know it takes time, so no pressure here.

To anyone contemplating a freeze plug job, couple of tips. Easy way to pull them is punch or drill a small hole and drive in a self tapping screw, then pry out with a pry bar. Hose out the crud with a pressure washer, and poke around with a coat hanger wire to get out as much dirt as possible. Put a little Permatex or silicone around the edge when you drive the new ones in.

Wow!! "Hooked" for at least another year based on your list of video topics. Once a week is PERFECT !! It keeps them "special". Old "Emmy" (short for Emeralda) just made it into 2018 with her demand for some attention. Kinda like loosing a button on your favorite old winter jacket. Those emblems show the level of commitment the design crew had, and were given, for this car. Saw them pretty routinely as a kid but never had any idea they were priced up with the "Luxuries".
Coldwarmotors is definitely up at the top of "My favorite channels". Coincidentally, two of the others are also Canadian. Together, you three span the width of your country. 👍👍👍

Uuuh, great video again. As I mentioned many times before: I really love this green car. Every time I watch anything about it, my heart jumps of pure joy. It's simply my favorite. I'm so glad that it is still your daily driver and on the road again after this "breakthrough" (luck that didn't happen more). Although I do worry a little because of the "knockknock sound" in the engine. On the other hand: 6000mls gently driven without doing any additional harm respectively without becoming louder/more...
Good luck farther with this very special car of yours.
    Best regards.

Those old engines had cast pistons and when warmed up the noise usually went away. A buddy of mine had an old flathead dodge that sounded 10X worse than the Frazer and we dropped a concrete block on the gas pedal. It ran wide open until we ran out of money for gas.

Methinks Scott should stage a reading of "The Last Onslaught on Detroit." Sort of a Book of the Month Club special edition of Cold War Motors. I'd buy that on cassette to listen to in the car. You could even offer a bonus version featuring content from the Kaiser-Frazer owner's manual, with commercial interruptions by Dean (Car Guard), witty asides by Agent 533, and the sound of Francine's tennis ball for added effect. I look forward to the next update on the long-term road-testing of the Frazer sometime after the snow melts... in June. Maybe the next donation should be a set of tire chains for the Frazer to make her an all-weather daily.

Fantastic as usual! Will order more stickers and shirts as they are available. Need to decorate the third aircraft in the Cold War Motors air force... another AN-2! Wings to arrive this weekend.
    Thanks for all you do.

She's a beaut! runs like my '57 F100. I may need to do the frost plugs one day too but it really needs a head gasket.

Hi Scott. I can't believe that you will ever be down to walking. But it's hard either to believe that you find the time to drive your stuff.
Please go on with the Citroen and the Plymouth too! Je suis pret aussi.

Funny, I'd been wearing my CWM tee shirt yesterday and had been experiencing brief bouts of agonising pain- it felt as if someone was drilling into my chest. Watched this vid last night and it all made sense. Any future Fraser episodes should probably come with a synesthesia warning. Just sayin'.

A lot of the gunk behind the core plugs looked like casting sand from when the block was cast back in the late '40s, something that will be very familiar to Triumph Stag (Snag) owners trying to make their cooling systems reliable, or, more often, actually work at all. The engine may be a little tired and in need of a refresh but that's still an amazingly refined car for pretty much any period, let alone when this one was minted. Either that or all the noise isn't coming through on camera...

Since there has been so much reference to the use of "frost plugs" perhaps I could try to explain. Any experts correct me if I'm wrong. Their primary purpose, as others have stated, is to allow the sand core used in the block casting process to be cleaned out. However, as a collateral function, they MIGHT save the engine block from getting cracked/exploded should the "weak" coolant mixture begin to freeze and expand when the outside temperature drops. That is, if the process is checked/stopped in due time. Best to keep the A/F mixture at specified dilution, and avoid "embarrassment". BTW, even with the engine running, it is possible that some freezing will occur at some point and stop circulation. The engine will dangerously overheat in sub-zero temp, so again, if caught in time, disaster may be averted, but the system should be drained and car be towed or flatbedded to a garage to get thawed out and filled with A/F mixture..
