I remember several years ago when Matt said he was struggling to learn double bass for new Periphery songs....well done, brother.
I always think of that when I see him playing the material from P3 and P4.. He mentioned it on the production process of P3 if I'm not mistaken
Actually I don't know why Matt said this, cause just remember zyglorox intro for example or insomnia, this 2 pretty have pretty hard kick parts

the fact that he plays LKK patterns across the kit, instead of consistent 16th note triplet kicks, FLAWLESSLY... what a compensation man, love this dudes drumming!

Not try to say this is not impressive but I am pretty sure this is more of a volume consistency thing. LKK is way way way easier to keep everything decently loud, than just try to slam all the sextuplet kicks like a VST plugin would do. Like for the song The Price Is Wrong, Matt plays blast beat on a left side floor tom and does back beat snare using right hand, instead of doing 220 sixteenths all with his feet. Filling toms in is just so much easier for live (if you still want the recorded bass drum).
At 5:12 - when he accents “WE COME FOR WAR” is the biggest unison with cymbals I’ve ever heard in a song to support the lyrics Spence sings. Pure freaking GENIUS.
Matt just has such a unique groovy style that compliments Periphery so well and is rare in metal
You just gotta love Matt’s vibe. Most drummers would be looking straight up constipated playing something like this, and he’s just chillin.

It’s always an absolute pleasure to watch Matt play. He’s somehow both fluid yet intentional with his movement around the set, and his arrangements are always so groovy and complimentary to the song without overshadowing the vocal and other instrumental performances. Most other drummers make beats; this man is a composer, and his set is his orchestra. Easily my favorite drummer to watch and a true inspiration to an aspiring drummer.

Man His grooves are so unique and solid. I've really enjoyed watching him dominate on the kit. Guitar was the first instrument I leaned yet I love watching these drum videos over guitar playthrough's.

Drummers named Matt are some of the best. Matt Gartska, Matt Greiner and of course Matt Halpern.
I've been with periphery from the start and this track is their best work.

He's really sick with those patterns! I think he means the constant 16ths/32nds! He always replaces those parts with a bit of low Tom instead on any of the songs with those parts! I actually think it sounds cooler anyway but I guess that's what he means maybe? Anyway such a sick playthrough!
Here’s the thing about professional musicians “weaknesses” vs an amateur’s weaknesses: a pro will work hard to overcome them to the point that said weakness almost becomes a strength. An amateur lies down and accepts their weakness, never getting any better because they don’t believe they can.
my favourite double bass drummer is Moe Carlson (now retired from drumming), listen to Scurrilous by Protest The Hero, the double bass patterns are fucking cryptic

Is he augmenting the kick with the floor Tom at 1:05 to 1:25? I Was always wondering how he would come in with such a fast double Bass lick out of nowhere. Very nice!!
I reckon he has trouble playing those kicks that fast, so he came up with a way to make his life a little easier untill he gets the speed down :)
As one mentioned above, he does this to avoid playing sloppily during those quick dotted 16th note double bass patterns. It's enduring for many, and he is by no means considered amongst some of the fastest drummers out there. What he makes up for that with is groove, pocket, and a large variety of styles that he can play with ease. He looks as if he comes from a jazz background.
It's funny, you'd think the fast double bass stuff is the hardest part but I nailed almost all of it first try. It's 2:50 I'm struggling with
1. I had to go back and listen to the original to hear if you were doing those crazy fills at 1:01 in the actual track or just for this video
2. Going from the half time to regular time and the very end was fucking sick as shit
