  • After a long search as to why my Grand Prix with the Series 2 3800 V6 was having issues, I found out why...but while I was at it, I decided a new set of coil packs just because...190k km is a lot for any set of coils. This video is how to replace them.

Mass Air Flow Sensor. But seriously, unplug it and see how that goes…they tend to fail without setting a code and are super hit or miss and are super easy to check.

@Turbo231 and sometimes it will show a check engine light mid misfire and it will blink and then go way in like 10 seconds or so

@@chxpionships_5163 The computer will be storing that code for you, will be handy to go in and get it.

Hoping I can pick your thoughts a little, I've got a 2000 grand prix GTP (supercharged 3.8 series2) with 180,000mi - it's been a fantastic car, have had it for about 6 months. Two days ago, it started fumbling and studdering under throttle, shutting off, and not starting. Getting spark air and fuel. Runs perfect after sits for 40min, makes me think it's possible engine heat related. I've noticed it's got two factory coils on it, and 3&6 (top coil) is a cheap Chinese replacement. Only code thrown is p0650 MIL. Which I know is also ECU related.
Do you think if a coil is going bad, it would be intermittent like in my case? Lastnight it shut of 3 times within 4 miles, sat for a bit and got home.
I'm thinking it could even be my icm.
I'd think if a coil is bad, it will either work or it doesn't, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, heat is often tied to electronics. Coils are cheap to replace, otherwise you are looking at the ICM, or the crank sensor.

@@Turbo231 eeeeh I sure hope isn't the cps!!! So rough to get to! Thankfully I already have one. Purchased one for a 3.8 I had a few years ago I never had to use. Is there a difference in crank position sensors for supercharged 3.8 and non supercharged?

@@MichaelKirbyMusic86 Not that I’m aware, I believe they are the same. I did a video on the CPS too, it’s a pain but if you take your time and get the right tools and bolts it’s ok. It ended up not being the crank position sensor for me, my MAF sensor was faulty. Easy way to find out if it’s the MAF is to just unplug it. Try that next time.

Thanks for the insight & quick replies!
Mine didn't throw a MAF code, but I unplugged while running, didn't seem to make a difference, so I've been questioning that too, just shocked it didn't throw a code

@@MichaelKirbyMusic86 Neither did mine but it started running near normal again after unplugging it. I’m guessing it was providing bad data, which is worse than no data. Replaced the MAF and problems resolved.

You can pull off coil while running to check spark.
BETTER have double insulated pliers ‼️
