Buick LaCrosse Cylinder Misfire - P0300 - Bad coil or Bad Ignition Control Module?

- In this video I show you how I determined the cause of a P0300 cylinder misfire on this 2008 Buick LaCrosse with a 3.8L 3800 Series III motor. I thought it was a bad coil, but it ended up being a bad Ignition Control Module.

Hey thanks man I've never commented on a you tube video ever but after 2 years of frustration and my car being a pos I tried and changed everything but never suspected icm but after I watched this video. I changed mine and now my car runs perfectly. So yeah thanks a lot buddy 👍👍👍
I cannot thank you enough for this video. My 07 Lacrosse had the exact same issue. I did the pull the plug thing..and just like you I got bit. More importantly, just like you I replaced the module and the car is running perfect. Thank you. Thank You Thank you. Subscribed!
Going to be doing this to my car, I changed plugs and wires having issues. now i know i need to change ICM or coil packs
@@Butterfly-ih6lq Follow the directions of removing the plug wire from the coil. If you don't see spark, then you know its either the coil or the module. Swap one coil for the one with no spark. If the no spark follows the switch, its the coil. If its still at the original location (this was mine) then its the module. $185 and 1/2 hour of your time.
I always cleaned the flat surface the module mounts to and used thermal paste between the mount and module to insure it stays cool.
Just wanted to let you know, this video helped me fix my old car. And now I can give it to my mother. Thank you!
If you used this video and nothing else, you need to take everything back apart, research how it is really supposed to be done and put the thermal paste on the backer. That new module may not make it thru the first summer otherwise.
I appreciate this bud, got the code looked to the coils, top coil was not sparking, replaced module. Runs like a champ 🏆
This was very helpful because my Buick LeSabre was doing the identical thing and you just save me a whole lot of time and trouble thank you
Yeah Mine id doing it right now
But Im not able to get this ICM
under ny budget
Can I use any other brand rather than GM
or should i get one from scrap yard?
Thanks for sharing. I replaced the ICM and now my Buick Lacrosse is running smooth again. New spark plugs helped but the engine light kept coming on. It was the ICM.
Thank you for this video. It helped confirm my issue. I replaced the ICM and it runs great.
Haha! "In the end.....I win." That was so cool!
Got to love when it’s a easy fix
Absolutely!
Thank you so MUCH! You've save me some money!
That 3.8 is such a good engine.
I agree!
Im struggling so bad with my 04 Monte Carlo SS 3.8 Ive chnaged my fuel pump, ignition. coils, spark plugs, wires.. thinking im going to do this next.
@@DieseldaDon what was it and what codes
Love your video my car is in the shop right now thank you
Recently got a spark plugs ,wires and coil pack now it has a terrible knocking sound , like a rod has been thrown what to do
You crossed two of the spark plug wires.
Nice whip
I got a 2005 Lesabre with the series 2 motor. Took it for a ride today and it started misfiring after it warmed up. It’s throwing a p0300 code. Makes me wonder if the ignition module is bad
Pretty sure that's exactly what's wrong with mine. Replace coil pack for 1&4, still misfiring badly. The coil was super cracked across the top. When it happened, it blew my ignition fuse also.
I'll try the ICM also.
Yea I just did 256 dollars and still same problem jus not as. Bad..I did plugs and wires ignition coils still has a shake jus not as bad it's killing me
Yea i changed my plugs wires ignition coils the icm and crank sensor and cam sensor still have misfire at 50 to 60mph
@cali8221 it fixed mine for like 3 days. Traded it for a camry. Fixed the issue.
@dpro5321 hahaha thats a good one..well I cnt trade this in its a 06 with 195k miles on it so I gotta fix or try to fix it I'm gonna take it to a shop Monday and just lay them 140 to diagnose it and stop jus throwing parts at..thought it was the ignition ignition but maybe it was and other issues cuz it was running bad but the ignition coils and icm has it doing better it jus still between 50 and 60 it has a little misfire then smooths out and when I have my foot on the gas it will go but like all of a sudden take off faster like I hit the gas harder when I didn't...
I see u fast forward the removal parts. This is a job i can do myself right? Jist need the confidence... I have the tools i need..
Yes! Just take your time and you got this 👍
Am bout to try this now.intake manifold and valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires and ignition coils but have the same symptoms.thanks.
I've had to replace ignition coil packs on my 2006 Buick LaCrosse I just got some AutoZone part 25.00 or so I didn't realize how different things can be produced and the aftermarket parts can be far Superior than the oe. That being said I'm actually writing this to talk about bite. I have an 65 horsepower Yamaha engine or Honda engine on the back of my pontoon boat I'm sorry I'm just haven't looked at it in a while am I 9.9 horsepower outboard is the other one. Now I was checking spark and we crank the boat motor over now I understand how electricity works I felt like I was safe while I stood there in the water holding the back of that spark plugs jacket be at the magnetic field or jump write up my arm made my fillngs feel weird
Thank you for this vid! Helped confirm my issue.
Im having the same issues with the exact same car. My cylinder 1 is misfiring. I changed the plugs, wires, injectors, coils, icm, even got the heads valves fixed. And im still having the same misfire. Idk what else i can do.
I put one on my Saturn before and ain’t had a issue with it at all
Good deal 👍
Have u did knock sensors n it yet
I watched your video and it made me feel stupid 😂 like duh obviously that’s how you check it lol I got in hurry and didn’t even think about that.
Don’t feel bad, we’ve all been there!
Helpful as hell
ICM... 427 dollars tomorrow. Hopefully it works for me too.
My check engine diagnostic say (wireset) it's doing the same thing yours was, any suggestions? I changed coil pack
My Buick coughs when I start it. I changed the icm coils and plugs and wires. Not sure what’s up
Man im having the same problem with my 06 buick lucerne cxl 3.8. I've changed the spark plugs the wires the ignition coils and the ignition control module that was 256 bucks and she is still having trouble and skaking. Can sum one plz help me..the only thing left is the sensor
Sometimes a cylinder misfire isn’t electrical, but is due to a clogged fuel injector, or low compression in the cylinder (not super common, but can happen).
My dad and I replaced all the ignition related parts for p0306 and it still misfires. We did a compression test and it tested the same as the others. Could it be an injector??
@@bkretschmann90have you checked the fuel pressure at the rail? Could be a bad fuel pressure regulator.
Help. Buick Park Ave. #4 coil contact completely rusted. New coil pack cured all issues. 2 weeks later same ICM error same issues.
If the ICM was truly the issue I don’t see how it would be fine for 2 weeks?
Could the wire and plug cause the issue?
That’s why I’m scared to use cheap parts store parts. They sell you a guaranteed price of crap. At lease it was an easy fix.
Mine throws no codes. It does not misfire. It just stops dead in it tracks. I have burned out 4 ICMs. New crank position sensor, new cam position sensor, cleaned the ground connections, new spark plugs wires, new MAP, new MAF, alternator checked, puts out 14.4-6 volts, new coils. It continues to burn up ICMs. Once it stalls, it does not start again. I replace the ICM and it runs for a day or week, stalls again. Put in new ICM, rinse and repeat. WTF?
Still havent foumd my problem and now with all the other stuff i replaced in it i did the cam sensor and crank sensor and problem still exist
Thanks I have same problem
Shocking how easy that fix was. See what I did there?
That pun was revolting. You’re grounded.
@@TheDaninator yeah, it came up a little short. I better recharge.
Thanks you help alot
7:43pm using an ohm meter how do you test each individual coil pack on a 2004 Pontiac grand prix gt2 3800 series 3 8th vin digit is a number 2 L26 engine
What codes was it throwing?
has anyone got to the point where this causes a low volt to tps?
Yeah we're are your flowmasters
I changed my coil pack and was all good then was driving and it died want Start again
My car did the same thing I changed the ignition fuse out and it started right back up
Man mine ended up being back compression I think that's what u call it I cut my exhaust in and it fired up crazy
Nice! Did your car have any issue starting like sometimes needing to give it gas so it can fully start?
have the same misfire code as in the video and i have to do that
Buick dealer wants $1200 to replace ICM in my Buick LaCrosse. $900 for module, $300 labour.
Ouch
Killer video
