    Hey Buffalo, I’m quite sure that you are very knowledgeable on the firearm/ammo marriage…but just a reminder in case you may have forgotten.. you may have to shoot many different types, weights, and velocities of the different ammunition manufacturers until you find the “one” that your 17 likes. I have two Ruger 10/22 rifles that are identical and produced by the same manufacturer and the same year. One of them will drive tacks with literally any 22LR ammo I run through it…. but the other one carries a 2 inch group at 50 yards with every brand/type of 22LR ammunition I put in it with the exception being the Browning Max bullets. It will stack those in the same hole at 50, 60, and even 70 yards. Why is it that way….I have no idea, but it is.
    I’m sure you already knew this, so I’m just trying to help..
    Great video as always brother, God bless you always!

    Looks like it did about what a realistic expectation would be. Good shooting on your part. The 17's, and a little wisp of wind can blow a great group. A friend of mine played with them a few years ago. He built a couple. One was using an Anschutz 54 action and the other used a 40x Remington action, and both used Lilja heavy tapered barrels.Some of the best groups at 50 yards were about .3, but it was really easy if a bit of wind crept up, the group could blow out to .75 to one inch. We found they needed cleaning after about 50 rounds or groups really went away. They copper easily, or those did, and they're a pain to clean with the tiny spindly cleaning rods. LOL

    .17 HMR rifles can be very ammo finicky. Keep trying different ammo. Try CCI branded ammo, I’ve had good luck with the 20 gr. Game Point in my sporter weight barrel Savage 93, but it shoots Hornady 17 gr. V Max pretty well too. Maybe try a different optic? Play with the action screw torque too. We all know it’s not the nut behind the trigger, we know how well you can shoot. Thanks for sharing your afternoon with us Buffalo.

    My vote is the scope. Try the least expensive Sig or Vortex on it. I've had 2 savages with pre-mounted bases that were not tightened correctly from the factory. That would be my second suggestion. Finally check for contact between the barrel and the wood stock. I always enjoy and look forward to your videos!!

    I bought one of these 17s with a bull barrel and it shot so well I bought the minimalist version with the shorter, thinner threaded barrel. They both shoot absolutely lights out great. I think the bull barrel is slightly more accurate at around 3/4 MOA. I don't have the most stable bench setup so I could maybe do better. I wish someone would make some match ammo for these for highest possible precision. Although the varmint ammo is plenty accurate for it's intended use.

    It’s so crazy because I just bought this rifle last week… Mine is the desert tan color though and I think it’s actually the 93r17 TR-V. I’m using a Silencerco Sparrow and Hornady Ammo. I’m also using the Athlon Midas Tac 6-24 and getting sub MOA groups. I’m just letting you know I’m getting better results and I don’t think it’s you. Big fan of the channel! Keep the videos coming.

    With an issue with the scope simplest thing is swap but might also check action screws including bipod & sling mounts. Remington ammo looked promising. Fun part is you get to shoot it more to work the bugs out. Stay safe. 🇺🇸 🙏 👍 Thanks for your time.

    I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of there! I seen a video by Cave dweller1959 he bedded his Savage 17 to bring in the flyers it seemed to work but it wasn't a huge difference but still helped. You know as well as anyone a good cheek weld is important and if that comb on that stock is a little low with a fixed parallax scope you point of impact can shift but with those groups I wouldn't worry about it much. Have a good one!

  • @justanobserver530
    @justanobserver530 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would try the 20 grain. I've heard a lot of people say 20 grain are more accurate than 17 and vise versus. Once in a great while someone says "mine will shoot either just as well ". Might also bed the action. I would have never guessed that a rimfire would need bedding but my savage mark II has become my most accurate 22, after I bedded it.
    Sorry I didn't see this video a year ago.
    After seeing this video for the second time, I'm fairly certain that the action needs glass bedding. Bedding should bring those flyers in and tighten the groups, which would make your rifle a well below moa shooter

    Not bad shooting in my book. I have had the best luck with the Hornady 17 grain varmint tips with my model 93. It will shoot flys at 100 yards. It has had a couple thousand rounds through it at prairie dogs and seems to get better with time. Give you an excuse to shoot it a bunch more😁

    I had one of these and it shot the Remington V-Max ammo the best. I will say, after a box of 50 rounds groups would open up considerably unless I cleaned the bore. I usually wouldn't shoot an entire box but it was definately picky about cleanliness.

    My guess is the ammo . That scope allowed you to zero it to hit a one inch dot almost everytime. If it was the scope ,there would be more space between holes . One thing i have heard from the grapevine years ago is to simply swab the barrel out after every ten rounds up until you hit 100 shots . Thats supposed to improve the accuracy .Great video as always , hope you get it figured out 🙂👍

    I was introduced to the vortex scope I put it on my .17 and it changed it completely and putting the vortex on I found out that it likes the cci 17 grand the best every 5 shoot group at 50 yards is a Jagged hole. It opens up a little bit at 100 yards but I blame the errors more on me than the gun.

    Good video 👍🏼. I have the savage A17 and wasn’t happy with my groups also. I bought a new trigger for it and that helped some. Another TH-cam channel the guy bedded the action and it helped his groups tighten up. That’s my plan now to try my first home bedding job. Maybe yours would improve with a bedding job ? Thanks again ✌🏻

    I’m thinking maybe it’s a bedding issue. I have two savage mkII rifles in 17M2 and one 93 17hmr with laminate stock and stainless heavy barrel .All three rifles are fantastic shooters and do well with any ammo I feed them ! Also , I have three Savage FVSR rifles in 22 and 22 mag that Also perform exceptionally well. Keep shooting it. Maybe it’s one of those guns that needs a good long break in.

    Savage rifles accuracy are good, but they intend to rust easily. I had a new Savage 111 and the chamber was already rusted when it came. So a bore light inspection would be a good idea to see any defects through the bore (either caused by the rust or the QC).

    I bought a Savage modle 93 black plastic stock bull barrel rifle and a A17 automatic rifle, both in 17HMR. The modle 93 is a 1/2" moa gun with Federal 17 poly tip ammo, and the A17 is a 1"moa gun with A17 ammo, which is a 17 gr poly tip a little faster at 2650 fps. All my Savage rimfire rifle are good shooters. I also have a modle 93 and modle A22 mag, both in 22 Magnum. The 93 shoots the CCI black poly tip 30 gr ammo to 3/4" at 75 yards zero and the A22 automatic likes the 40 gr maxi-mag hp's and the 35 gr A22 soft points at 1" moa at 75 yards. The 22 mags drop too much for dependable hits out to 100yrd for my taste, so I keep them within 75 yards. And my old Savage Mark 2 in 22lr shoots the 36 gr mini-mag hp's at a 1/2" at 50 yards. So I have had good luck with Savage products over the years. Here in Illinois they do a good job on racoon, opossum, groundhog, and skunk control. I have a Savage modle 10 Preditor in 204 for coyotes out to 300 yards. But that's the biggest animals I shoot other than deer which I use an old Remington 1100 12 GA slug gun on. One more gun I have that is a tack driver is a CZ 527 American in 17Hornet. It averages, yes averages with Hornady 20 V-max factory ammo, 1/4" moa. But ammo is impossible to find for it the last few years, so I don't shoot it much. I bought 2 cases of ammo when I bought the gun and haven't found any since. The 17Hornet is a very effective cartridge out to 200 yards.

  • @corneliusthecrowtamer1937
    @corneliusthecrowtamer1937 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    All of the 17HMR ammo is loaded by CCI. The polymer tips are all the same bullet, made by Hornady, except for the newer VNT rounds, which are a polymer tip with a thinner segmented jacket. The 20gr "Gamepoint" and "XTP" are literally the same bullet. The CCI "TNT" is a more hollow jacketed soft point, whereas the Gamepoint/XTP have the jacket filled up with more lead. The CCI A17 loads designed for the semi-auto savage a17 are the same polymer tips, but supposedly just a little more muzzle velocity.
    The best accuracy and all-around performance on small varmint for me is the 20gr XTP/Gamepoint. The polymer tips shoot okay, and are extremely effective at 25-100 yards, but they lack enough velocity past 100-125 yards to dump their energy into the target (no expansion). I haven't tried the VNT yet, but maybe they fragment more easily at the max ranges. I believe the little polymer tip 17gr bullets are inconsistent -- they're accurate but not as consistent as the 20gr XTP/Gamepoint.

    One thing for sure it is not the guy behind the trigger. As you stated the ammo was not made to be match ammo. It seems my buddies 17 CZ likes Hornady better and right as we both were about to give up it started to shoot at around about 100 to 150 rounds, why we are not sure because of view of the barrel with a bore scope showed a really nicely finished barrel. Keep shooting it!

  • @CCW1911
    @CCW1911 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I suspect the scope, you should be able to set the focus with the focus ring for your eyes and then the parallax for the distance your shooting, if not the scope and not the action bedding I would put a EC tuner on it since it's already threaded.

    Seems about how mine shoots. It's the 93R17GV with the wood stock. I always hear about how the 17 is such a tack driver but that's not been my experience and I've tried about 5 different brands through it. I'll have to try checking the torque on the mount screws and try again.

    I think it’s the rifle. Savage has been hit and miss for me on the 17’s that I’ve owned of theirs. I wouldn’t buy one again. The best and most accurate 17’s I’ve ever owned and always consistent are CZ’s. There is just nothing better out there for the average guy.

      Agree totally. I shoot 17 and 22 through a CZ 457 ( just swap barrels ) for pest control out to a 100 yards. Friends have tried Ruger and Savage but all moved to CZ eventually. In 22 I use Norma subs, and the BSA subsonic specific scope, thats parallax free out to 75 yards. In 17 a Hawke Vantage is used. Savage in the UK have a mixed reception, many are attracted to CZ because of all rimfires, best value and by far the best accuracy.

    If you pull the rifle from the stock, you’ll be blown away by how terrible the amount of surface area that action actually touches the stock, and worse yet the action screws and pillars barely support the rifle into the stock as well which makes matters worse. I had the 22lr version of this and bought a Mcrees stock for it. Helped it a lot, but it throws the first shot in every shot string(it’s not me) as this is the only rifle I have that does it.

    If your paralax & focus aren't lining up I would definitely change scopes. Then I would make sure your barrel is floated properly. Last I would take a torque T-handle & test your best ammo with different torque setting on the action screws. Great video just improve everything you can on rifle & scope. You may find you just have a bad barrel.

  • @Halfmilesniper
    @Halfmilesniper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is a tough one...I might try another scope first off to eliminate that. If it is the rifling I doubt it will get better, and since I don't think Teslong makes a small enough borescope we can't get a good look down the bore. Check the action screws to ensure they are equally tightened is about the only other think I can think.

    You could try messing with the torque on the action screws.
    Try polishing the barrel with JB Bore Bright.
    Maybe a scope upgrade.
    If those don't work you could try bedding the action. Good luck.
    I had one Savage 93R 17 that I could not get to group no matter what I did. I ended up giving it away.
    I had another that shot quite well. Right around, or maybe just a little over MOA at 100 yards if the wind cooperated.
    My best shooting 17 HMR was my CZ 452 American. Lights out straight out of the box.

    Also with those groups, they will change as you build up the fouling in the barrel. So those groups may tighten up

    If the target goes out of focus when parallax is adjusted out, the scope needs to go back for repair. Hopefully the Athlon Talos 10x I want does not have that issue when I get it. I have a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x that is absolutely perfect for my use case on a CZ 452 in 22 WMR. No problem like that. I also have a Leupol Vari II 3-9x40 AO in another CZ 452 in 22LR that is a great scope (25 yd min focus). Hopefully you can sort the scope out. I like that rifle, but not that wild about 17 HMR.
    I believe the biggest problem is the scope needs repair. I would recommend that you try a different scope. You can shoot better than that, I've seen you do it and I'm fairly certain, the rifle can as well.

    I'd be tickled with a 1.5MOA group on either of the two
    .17s I own. I always wanted that little bullet to be more accurate that it is... But I've yet to find the magic ammo brand that can make it happen for me.

      What rifles do you have?
      I have a Henry that does 1 MOA with CCI ammo most of the time.

    Iam sure you will get some comments that they can shoot a knats wing off at 100 yrds. And maybe they can, did not get any better results than you did with mine. I like the CZ, Bergara and Tikka in 22lr ".29" groups and cheaper to shoot! Thanks for the video Buffalo!!

    Also on 17hmr I use a Hawke VANTAGE IR 4-12x40 AO
    RIMFIRE .17 HMR RETICLE. Where I live it’s rolling hills so the furthest I have gotten a small pest is about 125 yards. I am waiting to come across the 300 yard pest on the next hill over to how good I am.

    check the torque for your action screws, Check the inletting, adjust the trigger to its lightest setting, get some CCI gamepoints.

    I also thank that beding will help and setting the trigger as low as you can and keeping it safe not under 2 lb But after saying all of that a better scope is the first thing I would change

    I have the Savage B17FV. It likes the Hornady and CCI, which are the ones I have tried (17 gr). I think that wasn't bad accuracy.

    I have a 93R17 BTVS in .17hmr that has shot many clover leaf groups. I may have gotten lucky! I wouldn't spend too much time on that rifle. I might trade it for another version.

    I think it's the boyds stock. They don't have any metal washer to help bed the action. The screws and action are compressing the wood to seat the rifle which gets you some slight inconsistencies

    I wish I could shoot so well. My Savage seems to prefer Hornady 17gr. Never put it on paper though. I just lean over hood and shoot small rocks or discarded 12 gauge shells.

    Well you have a lot of suggestions in the comments and someone is probably right but I don’t know who. It will probably just be a trial and error deal. The only thing I’m pretty sure of is it’s not the shooter. Thanks Buffalo hope you’re having a great 4th.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

    I have a 93R17 BTV that shoot dime size groups all day at 100 yards. Have a friend with an FV that shoots like the TR you have. His seems to do better with the 20or 21 grain stuff.

  • @RayRay-zc2ed
    @RayRay-zc2ed 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A better quality scope may bring them in tighter. In the end, you should have gotten a CZ. I have a CZ and an anschutz in 17hmr. They are both very accurate. The anschutz being just a tiny bit tighter groups. I am a 17 fan. 17hmr, 17 hornet and 17 Remington. All are cz and they all get less then 1/2” at 100. I have had others, even people I have met at the range try them. Every time they would be impressed with how tight of a group they get the first time ever shooting them. The hmr I use hornady in both the cz and the anschutz. The hornet and Remington I have to load my own using hornady vmax 25 grain projectiles. Good luck.
