Thanks for coming out to the video! This or course is thanks to my donors who make this expensive process possible, fully independent reviews: www.patreon.com/Nutnfancy You can also donate to the TNP independence with PayPal also, above. Here’s some of TNPP comments on this video!
"Glenn Rawson Bring on more 17 HMR! I LOVE my Ruger American in 17 HMR with reliable 9 and 15 round mags! 1 2w Paul Kwiatkowski I need a clue. 2w Thomas Bachtell CZ 457: Love it in 22 LR, 22 Mag, or 17 HMR, switching barrels is fun. Awesome accuracy, beautiful, and functional, but you do pay for it. 2w Schmuckatelli Mini-Sniper sounds like a fun shooting competition. Would love to see the crew out in the desert to see who was the best sniper team (Sean the TNPer, Jardine, and TD along with Papa Nutn). 2w Schmuckatelli Nutn rocking the new TNP trucker's hat! I have to ask...because I know you used to review outdoor clothing...why cover up the logo on your jacket? 2w Ryan Reese Probably from an openly anti gun company like Patagonia or North Face. 🤷🏻‍♂️ 6 2w Load reply Cody Harring Always appreciate the info. Will stick with my 10/22s. 4 2w Pedro Savage having crap magazines in modern times is as common place as ruger copying someone’s idea. My 308 FCP SR uses those junk savage mags, finally they reversed course and went back to AICS pattern mags. 2w Bernal CZ 457 Combo?! Interesting... Love my Mavick 88 combo. 1 2w Casey Jones I have a friend who has that CZ combo and man does that .17 barrel stack’em tight 2w Knaack I have the plastic 17hmr version. I’d echo you on capacity concerns and magazines on occasion that do not fully lock/click up into fire position, but those would be my only issues. It is an excellent prairie dog rifle. It’s light weight and accuracy make it a great choice when your not shooting from a bench. My money is waiting to fly out the door when they give us a quality option for a 17hmr carbine/AR style. The A17 just doesn’t have the 2nd COOL factor. 2w Casey Jones I have the A17 and although it’s pretty accurate the mag issue is atrocious. If I can get mine back cycling it’s getting sold. 1 2w Cesar Villanueva All the issues the Savage 93R had are fixed in the Savage B17......Pic rail.....threaded barrel....rotory mag with 10-25 round mags. I have both riles and love them both for accuracy but hands down the B17 for the WIN! Also some food for thought the B17 is about .6 lb heavier then the older 93R. 1 2w Clint Allison Interesting results that make me sad lol. I've got a very early, blued bull barrel 93R17 in left hand configuration that I enjoy a lot. It's a little heavy for what it is but it's got good accuracy. That little .17 round is a good groundhog round on the farm where over penetration can be an issue. I'm glad I got a good one back in the day. It won't be leaving my safe anytime soon 🙂 2w Hold Fast Joe I go to quite a few Appleseed 2 day weekend events and 95% are all 22lr so I see them all. The 10-22 by far most frequently seen on the firing line. I don't own a 10-22 myself, I'll rock the savage fvsr you reviewed 11 years ago. After many years of events I'm definitely over 10k rounds through it so given wear and tear it's held up great, still wonderful accuracy. The Ruger mags are better. Even after years of using the fvsr I'll struggle with the mags in the timed events that require mag changes. The fvsr I have is ammo sensitive. I have to use either federal bulk or CCI. Anything else the ejector won't hook reliably. I tried Winchester several times because it's easily found in my area but it becomes a single shot requiring me to use a knife to dig out the spent cartridges. 2w Andrettski Pretty rifles but total no from me. At the 19:40 mark was so painful to watch all those cycling issues, you held it together better than I would Nutn. Love the Benny Hill/clown world tuba music at the end. I have a 10/22 w/Nikon Prostaff, works for me. I just bought a Charger 10/22 pistol that I'm going to trick out. Unfortunately my commie state won't let me get the binary trigger. Good, bad or the ugly, I always dig a GRV. 2w Hold Fast Joe Great review BTW, I'm happy you brought out a Ruger option at the end. I would recommend it over the savage despite my years of experience with the savage. I think Ruger did a great job with their design and it edges out ahead of the savage line. One thing you touched on but could've expanded further was bolt action is just fun! Get your buddies together to plink and it just adds to the experience! Plus it slows down rate of fire. Even 22lr is getting up there in cost now so addition of throwing the bolt after every shot helps! 2w Charles New Don't love the rifle, but that AVI-8 watch is very cool. 1 2w Schmuckatelli I paused the video on that watch and tried to figure out what it was, but I was using my phone and it was too small to make it out. Thanks for mentioning that it's an AVI-8. 1 2w Load reply Ol Retired Fed Best part of the review was the clown music over the frustrating feeding issues at the end. Sort of a final comment on the rifle. I love my Rugers. 1 2w UnnamedSwiss I havent ever used the 93, I recently bought a new mk ii in 22lr, for small game and recreation, I like it, it's pretty accurate as of yet. And strangely enough it said not to use shorts. And the 10rd mag holds them fine, and it feeds them great and shorts them accurately. I cant say enough about it, but I'm wondering if I got lucky or if it's just a difference between 93 and mkii 2w Casey Jones I’ve got an A17 (Nutn reviewed the A22 version) and it’s got all kinds of mag issues. I’ve bought 1 more mag to see if I can even get it cycle again and I’m pitching it. Savage makes great bolt actions in center fire chambering but these longer cased rim fires have poor magazines 2w The Nutnfancy Project Yep they do have sucky mags. They need to upgrade them. 2w steve garrett the 17hmr will almost always be alot more accurate than 22 mag. as for the mag, Marlin has a similar type setup with their 17v and 17 vs series. YES it does suck and needs some finnese to put in. I think CZ 457 and tikka t1x has the market for 17hmr. I personally have switched to 17 fireball. I can actually load ammo for it as opposed to 17 HMR being out of stock. of course both suppressed. suppression and 17 caliber is the secret sauce 2w Kyle Zimmerman I have a T-bolt in 17HMR that I bought based on your review of the 22 lr version. I love the little gun. It is a great plinker, and also fills the itch for straight pull rifle (a la k31). I have shot a number of critters with the thing and it is very handy. The trigger does not go super light, but plenty serviceable for hunting. It is also plenty accurate, groups are around 1.5" at 100 yards, but it does cost more than the competition so if you want one, be ready to pay a bit. 1 2w The Nutnfancy Project Great choice in the that Browning T Bolt, such a great gun. Super fun in that .17 caliber too. Glad it's working for you. 2w Lynn E Fite, Col (r) The firearms industry: Kel-Tec is the most innovative: pmr, cmr, cp33, bullpups, sub2000, etc. always looking for that niche market. Marlin, is dead. It seems Ruger will be content with Ross bolt lever action. Henry dominates the lever action market. Mossberg has a great following with the shotguns, for hunting and competition. Ruger selective introduces improved products based on accurate intel: PCC’s. LCP, R. Americans, the Mark series, and of course the 10/22 heritage. 2w Ronald RayGun Have a 93 in .22 mag…same issues. 2w The Nutnfancy Project There ya go 2w STLParkRanger13 Savage rimfire magazines have a problematic reputation. The 64 is plagued with issues regarding the hard steel bolt shaving down the softer (aluminum?) feed lips/ramp of the factory 10-rounders over the course of a few hundred rounds, leading to feeding cycle issues. I've owned three and each one did it. 2w The Nutnfancy Project Exactly. These mags suck. 2w Paul Kwiatkowski Merry Christmas 2w The Nutnfancy Project Thanks Paul 2w David Elkins Gotta stick around and stay for the last minute of the video. 🤣 2w 308dude Yes! Absolutely hilarious with more than adequate background music 🤣 2w Load 2 replies Prepper Life Thx for the YUGE amount of gun content recently Nut'n. I inherited one of these n .22 wmr 2 years ago and have not shot it yet..... I was able to find 15 round mags for it that fit, I guess I'll find out if they function properly. 2w Lon N The last minute made me giggle- that is what they play for Joe instead of "Hail to the Chief". 2w Jerome J These ear protections look interesting, what are they? 2w Jesse (Sphinx) Clown music at end was great! haha The look you give the camera--been there! 1 1w Dawson Rabb My thoughts exactly lol 1w"

If the magazine was the major drawback for this rifle, please check out the Savage B22 Magnum or the B17; they are a new crop of Savage rimfire bolt guns that use the same 10-round rotary box magazines used in the A-series. I've never shot one, so I can't speak to how good they are. But reviewing the B22 Magnum or B17 would round out the Savage rimfire offerings nicely, as these guns seem to marry two Savage rimfires models that you've already reviewed (the A-series and the 93 series).

I had the same problem with the mags. All I did was bend the tabs out a bit so the next round points up a little more and everything worked out fine. No more issues except inserting the mag takes a bit of concentration. Thanks for the vid. I thought I was the only one with mag issues.

I bought a minimalist just last week in 22lr and just took it out today. Came home and saw this video and couldn't believe that there are such bad things to say about it. Mine was great today, no mag issues but I do understand that the mags are cheap stamped metal and will likely fall apart over time. My accuracy with it was quite good as well easily 1moa in pretty perfect conditions running cci mini mags. Love the vids nutn. If you get the opportunity to try one in 22lr give it a shot, I'm stoked on it.

Have you been able to run the 17hmr suppressed? I have a sporter version of the 93, kind of kicking myself for not waiting for a threaded barrel but it’s wicked accurate so no complaints there.

I have a 93r17 from the first wave that came out pre accutrigger. It’s a tack driver and almost shoots a laser beam from 0-150 yards with Hornady VMax 17 grain 2550fps. Literally you sight it in dead on at 50 yards and it’s dead on to 150 with no compensation bar the wind. There is no telling how much it has killed. Nothing special. Just a wood stock, heavy barrel and no trigger job but it has never needed it.

Had a Marlin 22mag that was a tack driver my brother loaned it out ! Never to be seen again !
The girlfriend of the person said she returned it! Leaving it on the front porch !
Found a Savage but may be the 110 ? (non-acutrigger) used to replace it ! Never no issues feeding ? Bought my little brother a 17HMR Savage with acutrigger never any issues with it either! Tack driving accurate!
I bought myself a Ruger American identical as u show in this video! In 22 mag !
Mounted a Gold series Bushel Legend 6x24x40 !
At 50 yds shattering 10 for 10 dumb-dumb suckers No problem ! But to check how impressive accurate it was Zeroed ! Brought the cross hairs on 1 of the 7 sucker sticks left stuck in soft rubber mat !
Exhaling and squeezing off around the suck stick was sent in to orbit and another and another 5 out 7 sticks was enough to satisfy it was a tack driving killing machine !

Nutn, Your idea of a 22 mag or 17 HMR bug out semi auto carbine is a great idea. I've just comprised with hot 22 lr with 30 round magazines in a MSR setup. Cost and availability of the 17HMR and 22 MAG may be a drawback when there are supply issues near the end.

I love the way those minimalists look, but I can say after working in a gun store for years, those minimalists have bolt issues. I would say 1/3 of the minimalists had issues cycling the bolt, even without a magazine inserted. Never seen that issue in other .22 bolt guns. I like Savage but they have an issue to fix

For the first time yesterday after about 3 years I had problems with cartridges feeding on my Savage 17 hmr. On further inspection, it looked like the problem was that the red plastic bullet guide was getting hung up inside the magazine. I washed it out with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry and presto, the problem went away. Readers might want to try this before they buy new magazines or get rid of their rifles. I think it is an amazing little rifle, flat shooting well beyond 100 yards.

The only cure for the bolt dropping out is to load it while the bolt is open. Had one around 2012 in 17 hmr and was not happy with it because of this issue and accuracy I could get no better than 1.5" groups yet shot .75 - 1" groups with a stock marlin model 60 with a trigger spring replacement. Never again!

Always great philosophy of use. No affiliations other than glowing customer service from Gunnie's.
One channel I was watching for varminting is woodchuckin'. He has tried several rounds but mostly has used .22-250. That being said, you can make a varmint rifle kind of heavy. Like the Mossberg MVP. Their actions are the same but the MVP and LC models have the medium bull barrel. It makes the whole thing a bit heavier and kind of front heavy. Which is fine for the repeat fire in getting rid of ground hogs, which are an invasive species. the woodchuckin guy gets permission from the farmers in his area and he only has to get from his vehicle to a vantage point, either prone or behind a hillock and he can make the beasties do acrobatic flips at 700 yards. The small ammo shoots smoother and because the recoil is nearly non-existent, you can keep the scope on target and watch the trace and impact. He will dial for distance and hold for wind.
It's too bad about the magazine. It could be a great rifle, otherwise.

The 93 magnums (17HMR/22WMR) came about at a time when one of the primary competitors were the Marlins. Don’t ask me to completely date the Marlin changes, but there was a 25M and 925M generational change for the .22WMR. Think the .17HMR was a 917M but don’t quote me there. I know more about the 25M/925M because my dad has had a 25M longer than I’ve been alive, and I picked up a 925M when I was 13 or so. Saying all that to point out the Savage 93 magnums and Marlin magnums use the same style of magazine as well as the catch/release. I had magazine related feeding issues similar to what I saw you experience on camera. My issue was that the magazine did not fit tightly to the guide rail, so it would move out of alignment when the bolt pushed on the round. The solution was pretty simple. I just had to tune the magazine by slightly bending the tabs that fit over the rail to make it fit more tightly. Smoothed my action right out. Given my POU for my .22WMR, I won’t say the necessity to tune each magazine is a deal breaker since I don’t need a ton of them. As you alluded, the Ruger 77s in the rimfire magnums used a rotary magazine and were out at the same time. More modern options would include the Ruger American rimfires, but also the Savage B series bolt action rifles. They use the same rotary magazines as the A22. The exact model number changes with caliber, but a B17 would be almost exactly what you described in your “recommended improvements” section to bring the .17HMR variant of the 93 into the modern age. A B17 would be a much more direct comparison to a 17HMR Ruger American. If KelTec made a 17HMR variant of the CMR30 that worked and the 22WMR CMR30 worked, it would be an awesome contender for hitting the woods. Be even better if the PMR30 worked and was also offered in 17HMR. What we really need is for Ruger to offer a 5.7 Charger and a 5.7 bolt action that take Ruger 57 mags. Get away from the thin case and rimfire reliability issues of the 22WMR and 17HMR and also get the kind of velocity from a 5” handgun barrel that 22WMR offers from a 20” rifle barrel. At one point, basic 40gr FMJ 5.7 American Eagle ammunition was 14.99/50rd while CCI Maxi-Mag was 12.99/50rd. At that time, I’d have paid that slight cost increase for the benefits 5.7 offered. Seeing that same AE FMJ ammo offered for the 30-40 per 50rd range right now though…I’m not so certain I’d worry about finding something that fills the void between .22LR and 5.56. When you consider that just a few years ago a 50rd box of 9mm FMJ was 9.99 while the rimfire magnums were 12.99, a 9mm PCC or bolt action rifle suddenly starts to make more sense in filling that void between 22LR and 5.56 in every aspect except maybe trajectory beyond 100M. The only real advantage of .22WMR over 9mm inside 100M is that it’s not too much caliber for squirrel while still being just enough to harvest smaller deer (think survival situation instead of legality for hunting).

I have a Savage 64, which is a .22 semiauto rifle. I love the rifle itself, but the magazines are just junk. They are made of pot metal like a Hotwheels car. The metal is somehow simultaneously soft and brittle, and it is prone to cracking, or simply wearing out.
It's such a cracking little rifle otherwise, i don't know why they can't upgrade the magazines.

    • @Thirsty_Fox
      @Thirsty_Fox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I suspect they won't bother updating them since they make more modern rimfires like the A22. I'm just surprised they even still make the old Cooey-designed Lakefield 64 all these years later, and they're so incredibly inexpensive to buy. Had to do some free modifications to get it right: lighten the mag release spring (bend it a bit), file the whole top of the magazine, lighten the safety (spring cut), and file the edges of the top of the stock since they're so sharp when charging the action. The bolt runs along the mag which wears out the top and eventually the feed-ramp since it's part of the mag instead of the breach. Still a fun, extremely inexpensive Canadian-designed and made 22. Picked one up last year new for C$170 with a Weaver 3-9x40.

I have a ruger American in 17 hmr, got it the first year it came out and it's been great. Put it in a boyds custom stock it's a tack driver and I've took several groundhogs with it. .17 hmr is a great round especially with the 10/22 mags.

I own this Savage 93R17. I use it primarily for tree squirrels during the winter when the flat trajectory comes in play. The 20-grain game loads works well for that. It has no problem hitting the bag limit. But, I did have those feeding issues. The rifle is not more accurate than my CZ in 22LR. This has always been frustrating for me. I shoot the gun less because of the dearth of ammunition l

That would be frustrating. I’m glad I bought the 22 LR. They don’t have the magazine issues you are having. The old 22 rifles I have also take the minimalist mags. I have three HMR 17s and love them. I do agree they could better the mags. The only reason I bought new savages was the accutrigger AND could (I thought) leverage the old mags. It’s idiotic if Savage made the old mags obsolete.

I can't speak for other models but I have a Savage 93R17 GV LEFT HAND that has been very reliable over the years and has fabulous accuracy. In an earlier comment someone mentioned laser beams. I'll second that, within 150 yards I know I can put the bullet where I want it. After shooting that rifle I lost all interest in .22LR. That said I'm not a fan of Savage's current lineup nor some of the design choices they have been making.

"Minimalist". The 93F would be the true minimalist version. I have the FSS. Love it, but price is a bit much. Not very long ago, they were very reasonable. Now they are around $400. Big oof. I wouldn't suggest one today. About a hundred more gets you a Ruger, which is a better rifle. About a hundred less gets you a Marlin XT, which is just as good. Times have changed quite a bit in the last ten years, and Savage hasn't kept up.

I agree with you about the Ruger American. I bought the American 22 Mag in the short barrel adjustable stock after watching your review a couple of years ago. Scoped it and had a real tack driver. Last year I bought the same Ruger in 17 HMR. Scoped that and it's a fine tack driver as well. Thanks for your recommendation.

I have a love hate relationship with my 93r17 gv.
I love how accurate it is for how cheap I got it brand new. I live how versatile it is for small to medium game.
I hate that it took savage 5 attempts to replace the stock that was defective. I hate that besides scope bases, bottom metal/guard and a single component upgrade (non accutrigger), there is no aftermarket for magazines, bolt upgrades, barrels, not a thing.

Just bought the savage 93 in the G model, I wanted to have a wooden stock and Iron sights but savage only threaded optics only models so I'll have to have it threaded. Funny enough I don't own a suppressor yet. I bought it because I left my RIA M14Y with my EX for her daughter and even it was suppressed and shot suppressed excellently

I hadn't shot or owned a Savage rimfire until last week. A neighbor let me borrow his 93 in 17 HMR so I could try out the cartridge. My first impression was that the magazine was garbage. Poor round retention, difficult to load, poor feeding... When I was in the Army we took hammers to magazines that acted like these and threw them in the scrap. I bought an A17 and love it. The rotary magazine, while not a Ruger, is 1000 times better than the 93 POS.
