    2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid vs. 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI
    No one's talking about it, but the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI are the two most fuel-efficient full-size SUVs on the market. We guess that makes Paris Hilton, proud owner of a 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid, the hybrid Tahoe's twin, a forward-thinking early adopter at the vanguard of the green car movement.
    Truthfully, calling either of these SUVs "green" might border on an insult to the color, not to mention the movement. These are still large, comfortable vehicles with more torque than the average commuter needs and more seats than most families will use, perfect for vacations but decadent in daily life.
    But these vehicles are more reasonable when you consider that the four-wheel-drive 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid earns an EPA rating of 20 mpg city/20 mpg highway, and the all-wheel-drive 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI rates 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway. This works out to a combined rating of 20 mpg for both SUVs - a big achievement for a full-size sport-utility.
    When it comes to large sport-utilities, think of this as a practicality test for hybrid and diesel. In other words, if you want to drive something big without feeling bad, this is what it's all about.

      nismo armada this video is about a chevy and a tahoe. Don’t bring up an armada. Secondly the mercedes might not be the most reliable but it’s a hell of a lot nicer then a tahoe

      @@user-oq3lv6lv7x yes but how many still on the road today the answer would be Zero.. they don't pass smog testing any more.. look on auto trader THE oldest available is a 2010 model
      while still plenty of tahoe hybrids on the road
      ALSO the resale value of the Benz is like 2-3k for a 2008 model
      while a tahoe will get about 14 to 18k (northern US market location 4x4 model as they command a premium ) RWD/4x4 will get about 10 to 12k for a 2008
      south US
      with under 100k miles

    i really apreciate the script on this video, both of these actors deserve Oscar award nominations.
    Anyway, i am so confused as to how Edmunds could not come up with an official winner. isnt it obvious?! Considering the Benz is more fuel efficient, more luxurious, better performance, similar price w/ way more options, and also more capable of towing, it seems like the winner to me. Also what would you rather spend 55k on? A chevy or a Benz? GL320 is better than Tahoe. fact, not opinion

    I have a 2008 Tahoe hybrid and the navigation system sucks I know it is 10 years old now but it’s crazy how obsolete it is. I haven’t had any problems with my Tahoe as far as the hybrid system “Knock on wood” but I did have a problem with the 6.0 engine collapsing a lifter and costing me $3800 to have it fixed I could have opted to just do one side of the engineFor $2500 but I told them to do both side and plugs and wires while they were in there. Other than that my wife’s been very happy With it and I have been after her to get rid of it for a a while now because it has 160,000 miles on it! I know those batteries for the hybrid system and the transmission are very expensive it’s like a ticking time bomb to me

      @erikkovacs3097 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 6.0 has issues with the displacement on demand system's pushrod failing. It'll be a good comparison because I have a 2008 gl320cdi with 160,000 miles on it and no big problems yet. Biggest I had is the ac compressor solenoid. I fear my electrical system though because Mercedes makes it nearly impossible to replace modules from the salvage market. Also I hate my battery location under the passenger seat. What were they thinking?

    I'm no engineer, but I used to be a mechanic so I know a little about how things work. I am not 100% sure, but I think the reason they don't make diesel hybrids is diesel engines achieve designed efficiency at, or near, their ideal operating temp. It takes time for them to warm up, and while cool they pollute more. Switching one on and off is actually less efficient. This is why at truck stops, drivers will leave big trucks running while they stop for lunch (I don't know if you've noticed this).

    I don't like the Prius either but from what I've heard, they've been out for about 8 years now and the reliability has been great the batteries have good longevity. At least in the tahoe if the batteries go dead you've still got a 6.0 liter engine with 320 hp or w/e to get you going.

  • @aquastario
    @aquastario 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    sirios333, I completely agree with you on flawed premise that some people purchase cars based on the size/safety principle. Our historically low fuel tax/fuel costs have encouraged gas hog purchases. I think what is needed (and seems to be coming) is higher fuel costs in order to shift peoples car buying paradigms to smaller more efficient cars. As a result, hopefully manufacturers will then start to introduce more small cars that are both efficient/safer than current small cars.

I have a '56 Ford F-100 pickup waiting till I can find a clean diesel engine to put in it, hopefully a Cummins made after 2002 so I can use bio-diesel and not worry about sub-particulates. I would like to be an environmentally conscious hot-rodder.

  • @Ernie1990
    @Ernie1990 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see your point, but I was just trying to tell the guy bashing the Toyota Prius that you don't need a huge vehicle to drive something exciting. Also, the GTi and GLi both have very good crash test ratings (granted the Tahoe is still safer). But if you think in terms of accident avoidance, the Tahoe doesn't stand a chance. You can't maneuver out of harm's way very well in most large SUVs because they don't turn sharply or stop quickly. I guess it all boils down to personal priorities, eh?

    I have no way of measuring emissions on my car, but i'm guessing it emitted round about the 100 grams of C02 per kilometre when i got 82 MPG, much better mileage than a Prius and emissions lower too.

    It makes a lot of sense to start with getting a high efficiency diesel and then adding the additional efficiency and cost savings of a fully-serial pluggable hybrid on top of that.
    20mpg is, just like someone said above, just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. No way that has any resale value once gas hits $5, let alone when it hits $10.

  • @piwright42
    @piwright42 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rudolf Diesel intended the diesel engine to run on bio-fuel. Rudolf tested vegetable oils on his engine as early as 1895. He saw that fossil fuels were a limited comodity back when every one else thought oil would last forever. You are correct though the Punto weighs 1000 pounds less than a stock '56 F-100 that will be an advantage in economy, which will translate to lower emissions per year. Still I should get to 60 about three seconds before you do and have a clean conscious when I do it.

    New small diesels I hope catch on in the USA. We need more namufactures offering SMALL diesels in cars. Diesels account for 50% in Euro. New low sulfer diesel fuel (not bio) & clean diesels (TDI VW Jetta - 50 mpg highway) are clean, better than hybrids for highway communters. I drove a new VW TDI Jetta demo & two Civics (man/auto). The Jetta felt like a car, quiet, clean, smooth, powerful (yes torque). The Civic, 38 mph highway, sounded like its winding, working hard w/ weak acceleration.

    This just proves one thing (yet again) for me tho; having a hybrid doesn't mean better fuel efficiency... That said; the Tahoe looks kinda nicer on the outside than the benz :)

    I don't understand the EPA emission standards in the US. Why don't they let low emitting ultra efficient vehicles pass the standards? These little diesel's that do 60 to 100 MPG emit less than a quarter of carbon dioxide than your average sedan in America. Would the EPA rather have cars that pollute more? i don't get it!?

    Another thing about hybrids... try driving them up in the north country during the winter. Electric motors and such just don't agree with the -20º and -40ºF temperatures of a North Dakota winter, not to mention our neighboring states. I'll run the diesel with #1 fuel (and not the bio crap either). You may still have problems, yes, but not as many.

    Diesel is better for a utility vehicle. Since a diesel needs almost no fuel to idle it gets better mileage in city traffic. I miss the VW Rabbit Diesel I used to have. 50MPG.
    BUT-- just try to get one started when its been sitting outside on a 9 degree F night in the snow (unless you get a block heater).

    Not all of us are getting away from big SUV's. As a family of 6, we've had 2 Suburbans, an '89 2500 4x4 and our current '04 2500 4x4 with the 8.1 L V8. We like the interior room, the power and ability to tow my racecar or our camper (38'-11k lbs.). I'm actually considering replacing our minivan ('00 Olds) with a newer 1500 Suburban. It'll still get in the low -mid 20's on the highway, plus you won't need a roof/cargo box on top to fit luggage and such while traveling or on vacation.

    I will not argue your point about Americans and pollution. I took geology last year and I noticed two facts about global warming. 1> Compared to the amount of green house gasses produced by volcanism all of humanity only contributes about 10% per year. 2> Before every major ice age there is a dramatic spike in global warming. While we are part of the problem it is too early to say we are the only fault. Polar inversion could be a factor as it reduces the strength of the Earth's gauss fields.

    Why have the camera on the two review staff instead of showing the details of the cars? (Look to euro video reviews for better ways to highlight the dynamics of vehicles with video ... moving through traffic, parking, seat adjustments, etc.)
    Why didn't we see video of the key differentiators as they were mentioned?

    Yeah? But where's the fun in a Tahoe or any large SUV for that matter? It's not like they handle well, accelerate quickly, or are fun to drive. Not to mention they don't fit well in a normal-sized parking space, people who drive smaller vehicles can't see over them if they want to pass, and they cost over $100 dollars just to fill the gas tank. There are plenty of fast and fuel-efficient vehicles out there. The Mini Cooper S, Volkswagen GTi, Honda Civic Si, and new BMW 335d for example.

    People here do not see the historical difference between Europe and this continent.
    Most European cities were build before a car was invented or even affordable to common men.Parking is scarce or not available in norrow streets.

    Stores like grocery stores are in walking distance and work is not as far away as here.
    And families in Europe are much smaller as here.
    It hurts to shell out $50 more as to fill up the gas tank, but it hurts much more if you get injured in an accident

    as long as they dont make hibrid vipers and vettes...its all good

    So what's the point having a hybrid when you can get 60 to 100 MPG in a normal diesel car? Doesn't make sense.

    Not if you live in Canada ! Right now, diesel is about 3 cents / liter cheaper than gas ! ;)

    Another thing, Europe produces 95% more cars every year than the USA, that's twice as many, and yet Europe's overall emissions have still dropped by 2 or 3% since 1990, yet America's have risen by 16%. Nice country, just needs to sort out it's emissions!

    well diesel fuel has a lot more potential energy per gallon than gasoline, that's why diesel powered vehicles are more efficient than their gasoline powered counterparts.

    diesel is expensive in some places... but i was just in virginia and found it for under $3.00

    I don't think you know enough about emissions to comment on this, no offense. Modern diesels are famously know for exceptional fuel economy and low emissions. Even an Audi
    R8 super car with a 350 BHP V8 diesel that does 160 MPH does 30 MPG, not bad for a super car. Providing engine size is kept small, diesels will always be kinder to the environment than petrol, due to low fuel consumption. I still think a hybrid should do at least 100 MPG or what is the point really?

    I'm sure you have no clue, but recycling auto batteries is big business. You can get paid to recycle them at your local scrap yard. Last fall I took in 900lbs. and got $200 Thats not that many when you factor in that they weigh 40-100lbs a piece. I think the price has gone up since then, too.

    On this continent, diesel's are more popular than petrol's. 60% in fact of all new cars are diesels in Europe even though diesel is usually more expensive by about $1 a gallon more, it makes up for it in economy. My car does 82 MPG, the petrol version does maybe 60 MPG or less.

    20mpg combined mpg is not impressive. I got that in a Ford E350 Club Wagon 15 passenger van with a 7.3 IDI diesel. Much bigger and much much heavier. Not as fast, but wasn't no slouch either.

    That is aside from my point, but yes emissions could be lower. The real shame is that every American car I have owned gets better gas mileage and lower emissions than the manufacturer claimed, but that is more due to clever tuning than to engineering. I had a 66 Mustang, with out emissions gear, that in 1990 turned in a lower emission score than a then new Honda Civic. As bad as the "big three" are there are things a consumer can do to lower their carbon foot print beyond original manufacture.

    Yes, for the two or three years that the batteries last. After that, you're back to a crummy 1.5 litre motor that struggles to move the prius. 0-60 in what, was it 13 seconds?

    But, be honest, you don't need big V8 to drive from point A to B. Most of the US drivers are spoiled in terms of performance, and want to have performance vehicles even if it's only a town-ride...

    When the new Duramax 4.5 comes out, I'll definitely consider it. They just need to get it to market! Otherwise, we'll make do with gas burners...plus, the gas engines are way cheaper...initial cost and maintenance wise.

    But I don't have 300 lbs of lead to carry around and that will have to be replaced in a few years.
