    For what it's worth, that front hub assembly was an early version of a unit bearing. The hole in the hub is for a 1/2" twelve point socket to remove the six 12 point bolts that hold the bearing retainer to the steering knuckle. Look at 4:18 in the video and you can see the six retainer bolts before you reinstall the rotor. The grease seal is supposed to be pressed into that retainer, which gets slid onto the hub, then the bearings get pressed on and the whole hub/bearing/rotor assembly will get bolted back in place. There should also be a grease zerk on the retainer to grease the wheel bearings while assembled. I ran into this on my W-200 in 1989 and ended carrying around a hub/rotor assembly in Indio, CA to get new bearings pressed on after the OEs failed.
    Great video! I love the old Dodge/MOPAR stuff. I just wanted to share a bit of insight for those that are trying to keep these old 4wds on the road.

      Well it's a TH-cam truck build. Everyone's slapping new parts on vehicles that go back into fields after a few videos. This truck won't even get 1000miles on it.

    Glad to see someone taking the next steps. You can't go on TH-cam these days and not find someone dragging out a vehicle that's been sitting for 20-30 years. Most of those after either getting them to run or not are rarely ever seen after that. The real MVP is the guy that makes something worthwhile out of these vehicles.

    I hope you cleaned that brake booster where the master goes on before putting the master on it being filled with irty brake fluid is not good for it and it's best to get all the brake fluid cleaned out before putting the new one or you will have issues with it

    Well, I hope you have fun with it. Bought a 1978 Trailduster for the wife back about 1984. We live in the mountains, and to be honest, it was a gutless wonder. It had 10-15s, 31 tall, on it and there is no way it would have pulled 33's. It struggled to hold 60 going up a grade on the highway. I tuned the heck out of it, nice duals, etc. No luck. This rig came from an older couple whoo just didn't drive it because they could not comfortably get in and out of it. They bought it new.
    The passenger door seal leaked in the rain, I tried to get it aligned an replaced the seal, no joy. Took ot to a friend who did body work thinking it had been hit..he laughed.
    "Nah, it is cherry...this is just the way Mopar built them back then.
    We sold it.
    I wound up being issued a Ramcharger at work, it was a later model with a 360 I believe. Slight improvement, but still a slug.
    If ya fall in love with it start looking for a motorhome with a 440 in it that you can buy cheap, or even better...a late hemi swap!!!

    My first new vehicle was a 1978 green and white Trailduster just like the one you are fixing up. I drove it for 8 years (and many ballast resistors). Never did take the removable top off. My black lab and I slept in it on a camping trip to Maine (I took the back seat out). Even used it to drive out on a frozen lake in Vermont to go ice fishing (made a very comfortable shanty). Ah, to be young again (67 now). Good memories.

    I love it! I’ve been working on a 1977 Trailduster that had been sitting for a few years. The 440 was locked up so I replaced it with a 440 out of a motor home. Now the brakes need some attention and needs some electrical work and it’ll be ready for the road

    Steering slop is probably the coupling that connects steering shaft to the steering box. Working at a Chrysler dealer in the late 80s/early 90s I replaced hundreds due to slop. Fairly quick and easy job.

    man, hard to beat the old 318. That old familiar starter whining is unforgettable. The whining of the transmission from 1st to second sounds great too. What I miss most is my 69.5 Roadrunner 440 six pac with the black fiberglass lift-off hood from the factory. Some called it a misspent youth. I loved every minute of it.

    Never skimping on brakes is a favourite rule of mine too. Cheap out on everything else if you have to - engine, suspension, interior, whatever - but always make sure you can stop to save your life or someone else's!

    My dad had a 78 Ramcharger that I learned to drive in... the 318 2bbl was never good though. Shutting it off while hot meant you needed someone outside with a screwdriver to hold open the choke to get it to restart. It was however, a solid 4 wheel drive vehicle that could go anywhere I wanted to go out in the woods or pack friends & beer in to go to the drive-in. Nice project!

    Took my drivers test back in 1983 in a 1976 Ramcharger with 33's and a 4in lift. I think it terrified the 5' tall instructor into passing me. Lovin' this series.

    I remember as a kid there was a neighbour behind my parents house that one of these. I always thought it was cool because everything else was a Ford or Chevy. I haven't seen one of these in like 20 years. Cool to see it driving again!

    I loved those old Ramchargers & Traildusters. My dad had one with an Arctic snowplow, bare bones basic. The 318 crapped out, in went a 360.

    I had a 1989 Dodge Ram 4x4 2500 with a 318. Couldn't kill it. Super reliable. Love the old Dodge trucks.

    That's awesome that nothing still runs. I have a 91 Ford F150 4-speed and I absolutely love that thing that's pretty much a mint condition and I've been fixing it up since hours little the family truck my Grandpa bought it brand new back in 92 in Kansas and my mom and me both grew up with it and I love it. It's awesome to see another old truck in really really good condition back up on the road.

    I really hope you go through the suspension, differentials, and transfer case, thoroughly, before going off road with it. Also, would you please tell us what kept making you stop and go under the hood, to get moving again?

      He jokes around a lot, he didn't have time to fix much of anything under the hood, my guess is it stalled, and he went through the opening the hood thing as a joke. That or he was adjusting the fitzer valve.

      His fuel system is /was still the jug and electric pump. The wire to the pump kept falling off.

    Keep this trick I devised years ago for the future when you do carbutator work..
    Try this... Heat the plastic tube from the carb cleaner spray with a lighter (about 1/4-1/2 inch from the end. Then pull on each end of the tube to stretch it. This makes the outer/inner tube diameter smaller and more of a pin point. When the melted plastic solidifies, use small wire clippers or nail clippers to snip the tube at the smallest diameter that still provides flow when spraying. The cleaner comes out like a pin point pressure washer and the shrunken plastic tube end fits inside whatever port your spaying thru.
    You can also do the same to create 90 degree angles in the plastic tube to spray sideways inside long venturi tubes.
    I used to make/keep custom tubes around for these situations. Hope this makes sense. BTW.... Great videos.

    Bonded brake shoes are good. It gives a little extra life since you won't be grinding down to the rivets

    I had a 1982 or 1986 ( cant remember ) Dodge Ram Charger full time 4 wheel drive ( 4 H , 4 HL , N , 4 L , 4 LL ) and I LOVED it. one of the better 4x4s I have ever owned. Very seldom did I even have to use 4 HL or 4 LL . Id come off of pavement onto the mud road or field and just went. Back on to gravel heading to the next dirt road or mud whole , climb back on pavement and head home.

    I can’t believe how different that 4x4 is to my 78 K5. I thought all solid axle 4x4 were about the same but your truck doesn’t have the lock unlock ability.

      It's still a Dana 44 front axle (most likely). The difference is pretty much from the knuckle out. Lots of folks swapped to either a Chevy/GMC front axle or later Dodge axles to get rid of the unit bearing assembly, as they were a huge pain to replace if you needed wheel bearings. Of course, if you knew there was a grease zerk behind the brake rotor and kept the wheel bearings properly greased, they'd pretty much last forever.

    1. Don't drive the full time four wheel drive Ramcharger , W100 or any truck with NP203 transfer case when the front driveshaft is missing. (you have to put it in Hi lock to even get it to move like that)
    It is very bad for the transfer case.
    2. Big tires with wide rims with a lot of "front spacing" quickly destroy front "unit bearings." They aren't good for the 9 1/4 either.
    But you will need a new front axle if you want to go very far with the the tires you are planning.
    The best strategy for most people would be for this to make a grocery getter with , say, actual 29 inch tires like 255 70 R 15 or find some 16 inch wheels and get a 245 75 16 all terrains. Use one of your other trucks for off roading. Lifting it is a mistake.
    For Dylan, another idea would be to swap the axles and transfer case and trans from a different truck , such as an 81-84 Ramcharger,
    W150, or best of all a W250.
    Again, he typically gets a vehicle running, drives it a couple of miles and that is the end of the project. The durability won't be used up with that length of use. But, I'm talking for the rest of us.

    Before you spend money on a lift kit for a truck that runs like , well, crap, get the engine running well, along with whatever else is in the driveline. I suspect you will need to replace the brake lines before long, too. Someone else already mentioned putting on bigger tires being a poor idea unless you really have a powerful engine. Best of luck. It is good to see tthem being saved. I suggest doing a compressoon test, too.

    It's good to use anti seize on the brake adjuster threads that way you never have to worry about them rusting or getting stuck

    On the drum backing plate those will develop ridges where the shoes ride , i would wire wheel them then use a drumel tool to knock off the ridges that would hang up the shoes and you could hear a click as they popped past them back and forth . Grind those smooth them use a high temp cam lube (napa has a good one ) on the shoe contact points for a smoother brake . I would use the same lube on the cleaned adjuster and on the front the caliper pens to help those move free .

    I've had several ramchargers. (Last one was a 79. Solid rig from Texas. Sold it to make room in my garage for my dad's 70 charger) Maybe some day I'll get another ramcharger. They are getting hard to come by. Keep up the good work on the Mopars.

    Sounds like this is going to be a great project. One request, after you install the lift kit, please realign the headlights. Lifts are cool until they blind everyone at night.

    Look down on top of the steering box. There should be a rectangular box joint connecting it to the steering shaft. Swap that out and you'll lose some of that slop in the steering.

    I have a 1974 ramcharger I got for my daughter and its pretty cool I have a m880 w200 that I will be swapping in the axles and transfer case out of the w200 into the ramcharger

    nice vehicle. i like the fact you worked on it. i watch a TH-cam channel where a guy buys Lamborghini, bmw, mercedes, real cheap but he doesn't work on them he buy car then his friend a mechanic works on vehicles so that's dull. mr mccool i respect that you work on vehicles.

    Excellent video Dylan :) also why brakes front lock is lack grease on sliders also plunge on calipers should be done in Spring and Fall Season 2 times a year also back brakes ! Grease to use is Farm & Truck Moly Grease and never fail plus emergency brake pedal wire too on any vechile plus bearings also steering parts to! Also what did you have do when pop hood up and fix also got going again to on start up engine! Also you should get a Grey Bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel tank and do every month to new or old vechiles! It save lots problems from happening on fuel or motor too! One Bottle save lots money and break downs to also you be impressed after for money spend one Bottle save about Bottle worth plus much more! In 10 years done the STP you say holy moly man you know stuff and done it too!

    Always wanted one of these or a Ramcharger. Such a cool, functional and rugged truck. This one would look amazing jacked up with the white part P***ted and the green left patina'd, but preserved with clear or oil. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

    Dylan if i was you i would adjust that carb and see why it keeps stalling and put new shocks on it and get aligment done after you put bigger tires on it. nice truck

    My Dad had a 1980 Ramcharger. I think it had a 360 in it. It was a Nice . I think one of these old Rams would look awesome with a 5.9 Diesel in it..

    As I recall the ram chargers were pretty good off road, hard on fuel but got around no problem

    Wish you would have shown people that front hub grease fitting when you had it apart. So many failures there from lack of guys greasing.

      Been there, done that. Very good point. Back in 1989 you could buy just the wheel bearings (for a W-200 at least) at an auto parts store. You had to buy the hub assembly (hub, retainer, seal and bearings as one unit) at the dealership, and then install the rotor/studs and remount the assembly on the knuckle. I got lucky and had tools with me when mine failed. Did it all in a church parking lot. $465 at the dealership back in the day for what was essentially the first generation of unit bearings.

    Had a 78 ,alot of fun ,one I should of kept,hard too find them now kinda rare,alot of people didnt know Plymouth made one they allways thinks it a Dodge..lol

    Should clean up the slide points on that front caliper. You are probably going to get the same uneven pad wear again.

    It would help if you explained why you stopped the truck and what you did under the hood to resume, not everybody knows that a loose wire or battery terminal can make the car stop like it run out of gas or had a bad coil.
