I'm not particularly an expert on Plymouth but most of those old engines that set for a long time lose compression like that, if you put a couple of teaspoons of gear oil in each piston it should give you enough compression to start it up, once you do that and run it through a few heat cycles you should get your rings back and have compression again.

It only takes about a spoon full of gas to prime the engine. Any more and you flood it. The low compression may because the excess gas washed the cylinders. Oil the cylinders and see if the compression improves.

Chevy's in my experience either start straight up quite easily or they are hell on earth. Had a '65 C10 283 that sat for 30 years, started up after new points, rotor plugs and was great. Then I had a '63 Impala SS 327 that sat for 25, did all the same stuff, it even had more compression, but the sucker is still fighting me after a month. Now we're talking! Finally a '58 Plymouth, the only classic american car I know quite well. Looking forward to watch that beauty come back to life. By the way: That's a 2dr Sedan, not a hardtop. It has a 2-speed powerflite automatic transmission, there was a 3-speed automatic available as well, called torqueflite + the basic 3-speed manual transmission. With that golden "V" in the grille she usually should be a 318cui V8 (or the V has been added at some point). Watch out, at some point she might even try to kill or hurt you...and I know what I'm talking about. Looks like she's a factory radio delete so at least you won't be surprised by a radio that will suddenly turn on and play music from the 50s. 😂 PS: Check out some of my older videos to see one of these. 😊

Oh man, that growling starter brought back memories when I first started up my 58 Plymouth. I had this very similar situation, ran great and let it sit for months. No start. These don’t like sitting for long periods of time.
Marvel mystery oil down the holes, clean and relube the starter (helps get more rpm’s out of it) and dribble in 2 cycle mixed fuel down the carb for starting, any mix is fine. Straight gas will just wash out your cylinders.
Once it does run, try to get some heat cycles into it to help loosen/seal up the rings. Also might want to look into replacing that carb with the correct unit. The one currently in your car is off an early 1950’s Plymouth. It’ll work, but it’s not correct for the later model 230 flatty.
Love the car as much as mine. Hope to see more of yours! Parts wise, Big M and Dave are the way to go! As well as the 1958 Plymouth FINatics group.

I would recommend checking your points again and make sure they aren't fried. When you tried to shut down the engine and it kept running. That tells me that even when the car is not running and the ignition is in the off position, the ignition system "thinks" the key is in the on position and is constantly getting power up to the points (anytime the battery is connected). If this is true, then your brand new points are shot and you'll have no spark. Worth looking into! Good luck

I've always wondered though with these videos where cars have been sitting for 15 years or more, shouldn't you prep the cylinders? Change the oil? The engine would be bone dry wouldn't it? Change the fuel? Flush the fuel lines etc? I would never think of starting a car that's not been turned over for 15+ years off the bat.

  • @Lazarus1940

Get it running again, leave the body as it is. If I had to guess, I'd say the low compression is probably the valves- either stuck or carboned up so they don't seal shut. Either way, a healthy 360/727 would be a welcome improvement.

The pushbutton trans is a standard feature on every Chrysler product from 1956-64 unless it’s a manual car, or starting in the 60s, had a console shifter. Looking forward to the progress! Fix it. Dump some mystery oil in the cylinders to loosen up the rings and valves . Chances are on that first run the cylinders were dry and the rings tightened up in the pistons and valves sticking a bit so compression is low. Also get the starter rebuilt. It sounds like it's dragging and not spinning fast enough. It also could have sucked some dirt into it while it was running and sticking the valve seats so valves aren't closing good . Use some penetrating oil in the spark plug holes on the valves. Hope this helps .
