- Camping in Storm Arwen in the Hilleberg Soulo - A Brutal Test in the Lake District National Park
I retreated down to the relative safety of Brotherswater to spend a night at Sykeside camping park. This had originally been my plan for the night after the failed wild camp (see part 1). Staff were friendly and helpful and changed my booking with no issues. There were a few other campers at the site and we all pitched on the higher ground which is afforded some shelter. Luckily, I had brought along my Hilleberg Soulo which was soon pitched and guyed out. As Storm Arwen bore down on the Lake District, the immense winds began to pick up. The fells were soon covered in snow and ice and eventually, the camp site lost all power due to the storm, having to rely on generators. I enjoy a few craft beers in the tent and then headed to the pub for a nice meal.
The storm was at full strength when I left the pub and the power of mother nature can be seen in this video.
I was toasty in warm in a combination of the Nordisk Oscar -10 sleeping bag and the 'Yeti' by Nordisk 'Cosy Cover', which I placed over myself as an extra layer of insulation. Throughout the stormy night, the winds picked up to such an extent that both camping pods on site were blown from their bases. The noise of the wind overheard sounded like a freight train.
The next morning, I awoke to the beautiful sight of snow covered fells, a true winter wonderland.
I had a great camping adventure in Storm Arwen and I am glad I was able to experience this storm in a tent within the relative safety of Sykeside.

Cool tent mate! I like the English way of "wild camping" - pubs, beers, cosy camp sites:-)) You should come to Ukraine to our Carpathians to test it, to our Black Mountains ( Chornohora ridge, 2000 m) - Lake Fury, The Ribs, The Spikes, The Priest Ivan, the old observatory White Elephant and so on))) You will definitely get lots of views and likes)))

A brilliant video Chris. Even more so after last night's one. Talk about turning it around! ( you had to go back out in it didn't ya!). For many of us who can't be there it's bringing the great outdoor experience to us. I love the videos when there's some storm and you still are there, having a brew , bit of food, and chatting away. this campsite and pub takes me back to when me and the wife went and stayed in the very same site some 26 years ago.

Just arrived in the lakes, seeing all the broken trees. That was a hell of a dangerous camp Chris. That said, stunning scenery. This place never disappoints , but take care and pick your moment 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

Superb set of crags there, Priest's Hole is always worth a visit too - the valley of Dovedale is stunning. I'd have just spent the night warm, albeit flat - in my tent. ATB pal

You took a calculated risk, it didnt pay off so you dealt with it. You can only make the right decisions based on experience if your willing to have those experiences in the first place. Fair play to you, it’s obvious to me you know what your doing.

I remember you buying that tent! I also remember stating my disbelief that anyone would pay that much for tent! But after watching your first night episode, yesterday, If I was you I wouldn't camp in anything else! "Bombproof" doesn't cover it. Send this to Hilleberg and It's a ready made advert. Well done for sticking it out, I think I'd have been in the hotel! ;)

That looked wild but the tent stood up to it amazingly well, its a cracking campsite that one too we used it as a base a few years ago for a motorbike tour in the lakes. We had better weather but the midges were mental!
Can't stand midge season, they can ruin a good camp 🏕️

I think it would have been okay in the campsite mate - a lad opposite had a Vango up and it was fine 👍

Great video, thanks for sharing your experience with us just proof that good quality equipment is a life saver.
The only thing that gave me a worry is that you camped way to close to the trees, they get ripped out of the ground so often in high winds I stay clear of them in weather like this rather pitch your tent next something really solid like a rock wall etc.

Wow those mountains changed from green to white overnight and with that wind chill factor could have been very serious! In the end you made the right decision! When we make decisions, especially when we have personal issues within our life, always keep questioning our decisions! Think it through and think, would I normally make such a decision, with all the experience I have! Great soul searching video, and when we are willing to voice our mistakes, it helps us with less experience to take time with planning and decision making! Thankyou

Ooosh wow thanks for small mercy's ie the tent pole snapping on the previous night. A brutal camp indeed and one you'll never forget. It's all about adventures and at the end of the day you still made a cracking video and Wokeup safe n sound at skyside. Camping pods took a battering showing how visious the winds were during the night, but the relative calm after the storm with the stunning scenery alround and the fact your OK, makes up for it 😁 I'm very impressed with your hilleberg soulo. Oh and glad to see the brotherswater Inn was open 😁 I watch TH-cam videos via my amazon firestick on my large TV. I Definatley got a feel for how rough it was viewing on a big screen 😱

Man that was still brutal at ground level, God knows what it would be like on the tops. No wonder you had the hot hands out and I bet they came in real handy too. Good to see the tent was still there next morning and what a picture the lakes looked with the snow on the tops. I think those camping pods showed the power of nature! Cheers Alan

Absolutely loved that Chris. Bet there wasn’t much sleep to be had, but what a real challenge mate. The views were stunning the following morning, well worth the sleepless night. The Soulo held up well. If it helps, I carry some extra pegs and double peg the windy end guy’s using the cord on the first pegs as little guy’s. Good to see you smiling though out that one mate, nice one 👍

Always makes me chuckle when campers are shocked at the weather when a severe red storm warning has been put in place. Cool video though, was a good watch :)

amazing pt 2 Chris! That site looks amazing, I've not camped at one like it before, something to consider! The hills look so great with a dusting on them. I could tell it was serious though, when you escalated from a "Christ Alive" to a "Dearie me" - I'm just glad my kids weren't in the room.. 😉🤣 kidding aside, a ballsy night there. That pub looks good. Def food for thought! I think I remember this place from an older vid of yours where you were raging at some bell who was running a saw in the background..? 🤣 Anyway, keeping it real AF as usual, that's why we love ya! Im not sure I'd even have fancied the almost unbreakable Soulo in 100 mph gusts.....its still a tent......thats aff the scale bonkers. Great vid, p.s. plastic Delta anchors are the way to go too. I was out on the top of the Pennines on Saturday ,it was that cold when I was cooking burgers the fat was congealing around the edge of the frying pan ,it’s something I’ve never seen before,we were just out for a hike so had no shelter from the wind/snow,we were glad for a hot coffee and a burger,that gave us the energy to walk the long hike back to the car
Sounds epic! Congealing fat mid cook = cold! Great to be out and experience it though - ATB 👍
Brilliant couple of videos Chris... You're absolutely spot on with all you motives, planning and decision making. They will be really useful to many folk bitten by the wildcamping bug and the great outdoors year-round. There were no fashion statements here, just honest wise words and two awesome tents in their respective markets.

You were lucky there mate that you came down from the hills. Horrendous conditions but there is a certain excitement about camping in them. I think I'd leave summit camps in crazy conditions as would probably wreck my tent. Them hillebergs are indestructible. Thinking about getting one.
Was brutal, but got much worse. Would have just been a bivvy on the tops had it collapsed in the dark. The Soulo is a superb tent - it wasn't at all fair on the Telemark really but I thought there would be better shelter up there - ATB pal

Hi young one, did you see Colin Russel Scottish wild camper, he was crying that his pole was snapped, he thinks he needs a new tent, it just gets new poles from the dealer or buys poles, l always carry the same of anything

The bombproof Soulo Chris. Total reassurance comes with a premium cost ,but in my humble opinion Hilleburg tents are at the pinnacle,in design,material and construction.
Never underestimate the power of Mother Nature.
