Ryan Adams performing on "Live On Letterman". Video ripped by GrimFish of the Ryan Adams Archive. To download the whole thing and other RA boots register at ryanadamsarchive.com
I’ve always thought his piano playing is very unique, almost has a self-taught quality to it. And to me, it sounds intentionally like weather sweeping over or under the song; especially on this song, it’s like rain. Also noticed he throws in some piano licks from his song Rock & Roll into this performance.
Checking in from 2023-just saw him in Raleigh w/Cardinals (new members of course) at Red Hat for my 60th BD with my 3 best friends. Had upfront tickets for Greenville SC and he has cancelled the solo tour. He's just exhausted right now.
I love when the camera pans across the audience at the end of the song. I noticed a man in a light colored shirt wiping away tears: Real men aren't afraid to cry when a song speaks truth.
For me, this version lays the lyrics so bare that it is almost impossible to think of it as a song solely about New York City anymore, as many people do. It's first and foremost a sad love song
Amazingly it is very possible that this dude's best material is yet to come...which is UTTERLY AMAZING considering how blisteringly damned fine his crop of songs is up to this point. Mind-boggling.
This performance is once that cant be matched.. He was feeling it in a certain way that could only bring out a performance of this caliber. The energy was aligned.. Those are the nights my brother/s are particularly on another level where the music channels thru them. Those are the moments in music I seek. Ryan always delivers
I'm a big fan of his music, but I never cared that much for the original version of this song. It's great, but not one of my favorites. The piano version is the best version of this song. It brings out the best qualities of the song.
Gage King I agree. I'm a huge Adam's fan but could never get into Gold. If he did more of the album stripped down like this it probably would've been fantastic.
Nah - this song is in no way meant to be a ballad. This is a powerful statement about the strength of NYC. A ballad is a disservice to the song and the city.
Love, love, love Ryan Adams. There is a good reason why Letterman has him on his shoe so much.... WOW did I say I love Ryan Adams. What great talent...
Here here,!I'll second that! Ryan Adams music melts our hearts and souls with pure happiness when you listen to him as his music not only expresses his own heart and feelings but our own hearts and feelings as well with so many good memories.
My first concert at Red Rocks was not U2 but rather Iron Maiden-Tiki Torches etc etc etc I love music. To me, RA just blows me away time and again. Love. Love. Love. This. Love. Peace.
Lyrics to sing along.."rote-learning during lockdown"😊😊😊😁 Well, I shuffled through the city on the 4th of July I had a firecracker waiting to blow Breakin' like a rocket who was makin' its way To the cities of Mexico Lived in an apartment out on Avenue A I had a tar-hut on the corner of 10th Had myself a lover who was finer than gold But I've been broken up and busted up since And love don't play any games with me, anymore Like she did before The world won't wait, so I better shake That thing right out there through the door Hell, I still love you, New York Found myself a picture that would fit in the folds Of my wallet and it stayed pretty good Still amazed I didn't lose it on the roof of the place When I was drunk and I was thinking of you Every day the children they were singing their tunes Out on the streets…
Out on the streets and you could hear from inside Used to take the subway up to Houston and 3rd I would wait for you and I'd try to hide And love won't play any games with ypu, anymore If you don't wanna 'em to The world won't wait and I watched you shake But honey, I don't blame you Hell, I still love you, New York Hell, I still love you, New York, New York I remember Christmas in the blistering cold In a church on the Upper West Side Babe, I stood there singing, I was holding your arm You were holding my trust like a child Found a lot of trouble out on Avenue B But I tried to keep the overhead low Farewell to the city and the love of my life At least we left before we had to go And love won't play any games with you, anymore If you don't want 'em to So we better shake this old thing out the door I'll always be thinkin' of you I always love you, love New York I always love you, love New York I always love you, love New York I always love you, love New York
Well.. true but there are two sides to the story. I have nothing against MM. Hope both of them find happiness. Mandy seems to be doing very well these days.
I stand by my opinion with the fury and determination of an Irishman..And this song was plagiarized .I take it back from Ryan Adams and give back to Caravan
well, I am going to give the people clicked that dislike button the benefit of the doubt, and I write all 6 votes off as an incorrectly pressed button, since i believe that anyone who would dislike this has no soul. What an amazing rendition (of his own son).
Ryan Adams...love him. He speaks like some lunatic who just escaped out of an old asylum and found a piano at the first pub nearby and you sit there thinking.."who the hell is this fool....whooooaaah...hang on a minute...i was WRONG...I WAS SO WRONG..this dude's amazing".... Like i said...I LOVE RYAN'S MUSIC...before some fool thinks i'm having a pop.
Dave dropped too far down the rabbit hole on the politics side of his act in later years but from Day 1 at NBC until his very last show for CBS his eye/ear for musical guests was the best on TV with no close second, ACL exempted.
Unpopular opinion here, but I don't like how he's slowing down some of his best songs when he plays live. This one and Let it Ride need to be uptempo. The song is pretty boring this way.
One of the best artists to cover songs...including his own
So powerful. I’ve loved Ryan since his Whiskeytown days and he has just grown from there!
I’ve always thought his piano playing is very unique, almost has a self-taught quality to it. And to me, it sounds intentionally like weather sweeping over or under the song; especially on this song, it’s like rain. Also noticed he throws in some piano licks from his song Rock & Roll into this performance.
He is self taught! I think everything he plays, he has learnt himself.
He has said that all of his music-ality so to speak came from his own feeling. To me, these are the best and most unique musicians on the planet.
It’s all his own
@@mapatterson22if, however, the meter for this particular storyline was written in in the way I told it…since I wrote it
@@JesseCosgrave-iu9ponice of you to express but , fact is, I wrote this
Tour selling out. Only fair. The guy isn’t a murderer for God’s sake. Just a great songwriter
talk about a song that will bring a guy from up north a tear or two
This song will always be best when played solo on the piano.....Love you Ryan.....thank you.
It's just amazing and beautiful...He largely remains an unsung treasure, but maybe those are the best kinds of treasures
I never got Sylvia Plath until i saw him play it live on piano. Truly inspiring.
as good a singer songwriter alive.
michael stinson YES
Without any doubt.
Always loved this performance. Happy to see it tonight in 2021

What a memorable preformance

This version is incredible
Holy Cow! What a Musician❤️
Amazingly it is very possible that this dude's best material is yet to come...which is UTTERLY AMAZING considering how blisteringly damned fine his crop of songs is up to this point.
Mind-boggling.
I always knew this guy sucked, his best material came out of him alright! Falseidol of the month!
It's hard to say if it'll get better than this. Time will tell.
An extraordinary performance. Letterman never let ANYONE go long. This is simply wonderful.
I agree. The best singer songwriter out here ,music so beautiful and like a drug the more you hear, the more you want.
This is beautiful. Love the original but this is fantastic
This version is ten times what the album version is.
This performance is once that cant be matched.. He was feeling it in a certain way that could only bring out a performance of this caliber. The energy was aligned.. @@done1675 Nah, it's a song about the breakup of a relationship. N Y is his name for Amy, his first long term girl friend. Peace xx
this guy breaks my heart......awesomeness at its best
And his music breaks my heart and. makes me feel so beautiful.
Love, love, love Ryan Adams. There is a good reason why Letterman has him on his shoe so much.... WOW did I say I love Ryan Adams. What great talent...
Beautiful
I've been fortunate to see him play this with piano live in 2011. Gives it such a new meaning and breadth!
lucky you
As good as it gets, awesome version
Incredible performance!
Hearing this live is a privilege and an honour. This boy never ceases to amaze - thank goodness for him
What a great talent..... such melancholy and sadness.
Smitty Jones so beautiful
Wow!! I loved the song before but now it holds even deeper place in my heart!!
I've been listening to Ryan for a long time and he just keeps getting better and better. Love this.

Oh. My. God. How in the hell have I never seen this before now?
He is the bomb...the best. Life in music, music in life...
Some of his best performances were on Letterman show
God bless you ryan and the rest of whiskeytown from a tampa boy
No one else in the world could actually have been done THIS wearing an Iron Maiden's leather jacket.

Well, I shuffled through the city on the 4th of July
I had a firecracker waiting to blow
Breakin' like a rocket who was makin' its way
To the cities of Mexico
Lived in an apartment out on Avenue A
I had a tar-hut on the corner of 10th
Had myself a lover who was finer than gold
But I've been broken up and busted up since
And love don't play any games with me, anymore
Like she did before
The world won't wait, so I better shake
That thing right out there through the door
Hell, I still love you, New York
Found myself a picture that would fit in the folds
Of my wallet and it stayed pretty good
Still amazed I didn't lose it on the roof of the place
When I was drunk and I was thinking of you
Every day the children they were singing their tunes
Out on the streets…
Out on the streets and you could hear from inside
Used to take the subway up to Houston and 3rd
I would wait for you and I'd try to hide
And love won't play any games with ypu, anymore
If you don't wanna 'em to
The world won't wait and I watched you shake
But honey, I don't blame you
Hell, I still love you, New York
Hell, I still love you, New York, New York
I remember Christmas in the blistering cold
In a church on the Upper West Side
Babe, I stood there singing, I was holding your arm
You were holding my trust like a child
Found a lot of trouble out on Avenue B
But I tried to keep the overhead low
Farewell to the city and the love of my life
At least we left before we had to go
And love won't play any games with you, anymore
If you don't want 'em to
So we better shake this old thing out the door
I'll always be thinkin' of you
I always love you, love New York
I always love you, love New York
I always love you, love New York
I always love you, love New York
heartstopping
fantastic I have the gold album with the fast version but this puts a whole light on the meaning of the song
the Carnegie Show was one of the 10 Best Of All Times I've ever seen. And I've seen a few.
DRA has a way of doing this with songs.... whether they are his or not.. slowing them down and making them fantastic in a whole nother way
Krista B slowing it down in such a magnificent way
beautiful
With this performance he successfully took this song back after losing it to 9/11.
Great song.
Beautiful.
What a class act Ryan Adams 🤓👍🏻
someone idiot has pressed the wrong button, Ryan Adams rocks
lovely
You're so right bro!
So awesome. Didn't know that he plays piano too.
❤❤
A leather jacket with Eddie on it! Hell yeah.
I had never seen that, I'm not sure why. Wow.
DAMN RIGHT.
wow.
Remember the last time RA was on that tv show?
Me neither.
nice!!
Avenue B and the City I love
who ever disliked this, needs to be punched in the face.....repeatedly.
Steven Toth definitely,il extend a glesga kiss (Glasgow kiss ie headbutt) from Scotland just to add to how true that is
me too, just found out about him today :)

any games with you, anymore /
if you don't want em to"
DRA, just awing the crowd.... not surprised!
Never knew Ryan played the piano! Is there anything he can't do??

Damn.
i first heard this song when it was called Aristocracy by Caravan in 1971
+Trev Mac Hardly. How many chord progressions do you think exist in the major scale, there's bound to be overlap.
I stand by my opinion with the fury and determination of an Irishman..And this song was plagiarized .I take it back from Ryan Adams and give back to Caravan
Who gets credit for Mary Had a Little Lamb?

is this a warmup to Letterman, before the show perhaps? the stage doesn't look the same.
It was a full solo show done at the Ed Sullivan theatre but not as part of a regular letterman show
The songs sounds more like New Orleans. A great song anyway.
His Number of the Beast jacket is the least awesome part of this, and it's totally rad.
No shit, huh?!
Michael Jackson
?...
Sigh, so good, but a jerk in real life. I'll always love the songs. Sad
