+Yan Kelecom Depends on the company… It is our company procedure that the Captain sets the power levers for Take Off at all times; also when the co-pilot is pilot flying. Once the aircraft takes off, the co-pilot in the role of pilot flying is allowed to handle the power levers.
Great video of how Captain and First Officer use their communication and action resources during this flight. Their is a welcome relaxation and at times even humor in how they relate to each other. They fly VFR on a barely visible day in a valley. Risky but they handle it by taking turns in seeing object and terrain outside the cockpit. Bravo!!!
Everyone's going on about how these pilots rigorously observe sterile cockpit rules, but they don't totally as far as I can see. To me it's a perfect mix of strict attention to business and a friendly banter - a great working relationship. When you watch videos of Lufthansa legend Jurgen Raps you get the same thing - the guy knows his business but he's very relaxed about it, not above making a quip here and there. It all depends on the airline I guess.

What happened to the sterile cockpit rule? It is in effect from the start of the check list, until the flight attains 10,000 feet agl. The chitter chatter is how some flight crews miss important clues that something may be amiss. Several accidents in ATR's have been caused by this non sterile cockpit communications. You can tell from the need to mute the conversation as they were turning onto the runway, and the fact that they were laughing at that moment, that what they were doing was not appropriate for the task at hand. This kind of relaxed cockpit will eventually get them and their passengers killed.
+Offgrid Cabin Whilst I understand your concern and don't fully disagree, there is probably a body of evidence that can show crashed aeroplanes in which cockpit chat was totally sterile. Sometimes the human factor, positive everyday working relationships, can ensure open communication in a team and avoid accidents. By that I mean not being afraid to question a Captain's decision. Although no voice recording existed, the BEA Papa India crash of June 1972 may have been a case of both sterility and fear to question a Captain, especially when the missed clue was shaking the hell out of itself in front of him (pathetic). It may also be possible that any of us could die for a multitude of reasons at anytime. Life eh?

+Mario We were visual with the ground at all times ;-) But of course we had to stay concentrated and maintain a sharp lookout at all times because in the airspace we were in, we were also responsible for our own separation from other traffic.

Why would you fly VFR in such plane with that visibility? The ATR could easily climb out of LSGS via SID without the pilots straining their eyes... Other than that, pilot performance excellent!
How could two women look so different? Esther- a pilot could not look anymore different from Aria in the video Beyond! Blond women look EXACTLY like Brunettes! Black people resemble Whites! Women and Men are profoundly different! Directive 00000000 skin colour matches every time with every person.

seem to me like a very burocratic, obsolete flying corridor. whats the point of forcing the pilots so close between terrain? Thats just calling for trouble! they should be allowed to climb tru immediately to above the clouds and well above the ridges. clearance is safety, height is safety, speed is safety. must be fukin annoying to fly like this with a lot of passengers.

The plane is calling terrain for the hills west of Martigny, but the valley curls to the north and opens up, the plane can't "see" that yet.
Why would this departure keep you within a valley rather than ascend immediately?

I would not be comfortable with a woman in the flight deck. women panic too easily in emergency situations.
