What impresses me about this performance is the joy of Kent's performance. Vega sings extremely well, but if she were alone, and sang with this lack of involvement, I'd be uninterested and unmoved. Putting aside, for the moment, Stacey Kent's gorgeous voice and the art with which she use it, she loves the music; that, to me, the ability to project an infectious love for the music, makes a performance infectious. It's rare to find such a talent coupled with such affection and involvement. Stacey Kent enjoys the music and has fun with it. It's highly engaging.
"É pau. É pedra. É o fim do caminho. É um resto de toco. É um pouco sozinho... São as águas de março fechando o verão, é promessa de vida no meu coração."
The only thing that sucks about this version is that Stacey and Suzanne did not play the ENTIRE SONG. They only played half of it :-( Still, it is the best femme/femme duet version of my most favorite Bossa song by Jobim! We should all MARCH IN THE STREETS and have Suzanne and Stacey actually sing the whole damn thing!
I can't deny that this is a really lovely version of the Jobim song, in English, but if I am forced to choose, I would select Alba Armengou's versions, two in fact, one from 2016 with Rita Payes, and one from 2019 with Joan Casanova. They are in Portuguese, but Alba Armengou has one of the most delicate voices of the current generation.
This was a nice job by both performers. I didn't think that Stacey Kent was that well known in the states. She's one of my favorites for old-fashioned standards.
Stacey Kent is such a great musician - and she actually sings the words as if you are supposed to understand them. Vega goes through whole phrases where you can't make out a single word.
After hearing various versions of Waters of March I believe this Vega/Kent combination has the most amount of ENERGY within the structure of their singing.
I was going to post how Stacey Kent has a great talent, a nice, simple, direct singing style with a lovely sweet tone and superb timing, but when I saw those eyes and that smile I realised I could boil it down to this: I think Stacey Kent would be very easy to fall in love with.
Stacey Kent is even better in person! I've seen her and her incredibly talented husband, Jim Tomlinson, twice at Blues Alley. If you ever get the chance to see them, please do!
Waters of March A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road, It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone It's a sliver of glass, It is life, it's the sun, It is night, it is death, It's a trap, it's a gun The oak when it blooms, A fox in the brush, A knot in the wood, The song of a thrush The wood of the wind, A cliff, a fall, A scratch, a lump, It is nothing at all It's the wind blowing free, It's the end of the slope, It's a beam, it's a void, It's a hunch, it's a hope And the river bank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of the strain, The joy in your heart The foot, the ground, The flesh and the bone, The beat of the road, A slingshot's stone A fish, a flash, A silvery glow, A fight, a bet, The range of a bow The bed of the well, The end of the line, The dismay in the face, It's a loss, it's a find A spear, a spike, A point, a nail, A drip, a drop, The end of the tale A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light, The shot of a gun in the dead of the night A mile, a must, A thrust, a bump, It's a girl, it's a rhyme, It's a cold, it's the mumps The plan of the house, The body in bed, And the car that got stuck, It's the mud, it's the mud Afloat, adrift, A flight, a wing, A hawk, a quail, The promise of spring And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life It's the joy in your heart A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone A snake, a stick, It is John, it is Joe, It's a thorn in your hand and a cut in your toe A point, a grain, A bee, a bite, A blink, a buzzard, A sudden stroke of night A pin, a needle, A sting, a pain, A snail, a riddle, A wasp, a stain A pass in the mountains, A horse and a mule, In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life in your heart, in your heart A stick, a stone, The end of the road, The rest of a stump, A lonesome road A sliver of glass, A life, the sun, A knife, a death, The end of the run And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of all strain, It's the joy in your heart
@brit1958dec I agree, there are more words in this song than most, lots of them interchangeable - if you're not careful it'd be easy to find yourself in the wrong part of the song, that & the fact that it's a duet makes it even harder. I wonder if oddood can sing the whole thing straight off. I couldn't. PS. Stacey Kent does know the words, there's another vid of her singing it solo. PPS. I love that little dance she does a couple of times. She is absolutely entrancing.
i think the two are perfect together, even if they sing with their different style. While Stacey is cheerful, fresh and feel free, Suzanne makes her presence by a little bit of soft, elegant and deep. sorry about my english, writing french is honestly easier for me.
@musicismylife57 I Think the problem is because she didn't know the lyrics by heart, which is fair enough for this song. She has to read the words all the time.
E a musica brasileira deixa o Mundo mais feliz
Came here to hear Suzanne Vega
First time I hear Stacey Kent
Oh wow, what a fantastic voice !
I gree
That's beautiful
Two of my favourite singers

My absolute favorite song. So good! thanks These girls bring it on...
If you’ve never heard Susannah McCorkle’s version you’re missing out. These two sound great - Susannah is magical.
I loved Susannah McCorkle's singing. What a great loss
Nice vocals, an amazing song from Jobim 👏👏
I love VEGA Sua voz é maravilhosa, gostaria de ouvir você cantando mais bossa nova...
"É pau. É pedra. É o fim do caminho. É um resto de toco. É um pouco sozinho... São as águas de março fechando o verão, é promessa de vida no meu coração."

:-)
I fully agree. The instrumental part is missing, and also the final part with different voicings
Eu acredito que a única pessoa que não tenhe respeito quem é você sejam quem fo
I can't deny that this is a really lovely version of the Jobim song, in English, but if I am forced to choose, I would select Alba Armengou's versions, two in fact, one from 2016 with Rita Payes, and one from 2019 with Joan Casanova. Stacey sang it beautifully on the concert in Wroclaw (October 2009). That song is not as easy as it could sound. Jobim is a genius.
one of the many faces of my great Brasil!
Eu amo essas meninas. Muito boa interpretação.
Un pur moment de bonheur ! Merci !
Tom Jobim e duas mulheres lindas!
Love both of these singers - wow together!! How awesome.

yes a suspended moment in time of pure pleasure.
Beautifully done
beautiful interpretation!
After hearing various versions of Waters of March I believe this Vega/Kent combination has the most amount of ENERGY within the structure of their singing.
David Clarke Not to be missed Marie So new album in between Jazz & Bossa!
I like the french version of this song by Georges Moustaki "les eaux de Mars" even i love Suzanne Vega !!! 😍
Suzanne Vega performed the bossa-nova style very well. That is not easy. I think she should sing more bossa-nova songs...
Wow! 👏👏👏👏
Yes, she has sang this solo in Rio de Janeiro, and there's the vid here on youtube
una meraviglia

@musicismylife57 ...Thank you ! My sentiments exactly ! I would like to hear Stacey sing this solo- the two together just are noit compatable here...
Wow.!!....Trying to remember the lyrics to song must be a herculean task! Almost as hard as trying to memorize Gentle On My Mind by Glen Campbell.
JOBIM LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Ylinets That's true ! I noticed this from the very beginning
wondering what was going on between them lol
Saudosa Elis Regina ! Nome da minha irmã
i think i fell in love =)
Cool cookies both!
Waters of March
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road,
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass,
It is life, it's the sun,
It is night, it is death,

It is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free,
It's the end of the slope,
It's a beam, it's a void,
It's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the end of the strain,
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground,
The flesh and the bone,
The beat of the road,
A slingshot's stone
A fish, a flash,
A silvery glow,
A fight, a bet,
The range of a bow
The bed of the well,
The end of the line,
The dismay in the face,
It's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike,
A point, a nail,
A drip, a drop,
The end of the tale
A truckload of bricks

this song is tom jobim elis regina and, authentic Brazilian music

Música brasileira interpretada por TOM JOBIM e ELLIS REGINA
Jobim himself wrote the english version of the song....that is how fantastic he was...
I love Stacey Kent - but if you like this song it's also worth searching for the versions by Nicole Henry and Luciana Souza.
You may wish to see my comment above; Alba Armengou and Rita Payes, or Joan Casanova.
@Niltonpinheiro2
You're wellcome :-)
i think the two are perfect together, even if they sing with their different style. While Stacey is cheerful, fresh and feel free, Suzanne makes her presence by a little bit of soft, elegant and deep.

Does anyone know the name of the wonderful pianist?
que bom que existe o tal de tele prompt?
Though I don't understand the portuguese (original) version, I prefer it.
Tom Jobim Canção.. linda*
