Waters of March - English translation A stick, a stone, its the end of the road, It’s what’s left of a stump, It’s a little alone It’s a sliver of glass, It is life, it’s the sun, It is night, it is death, It’s a snare, it’s a gun It’s the blossoming field, It’s the candlelight’s blush, It’s the knot in the wood, it’s the song of the thrush It’s the wood of the wind, It’s the cliff and the fall, It is Mystery’s depths, It is nothing at all It’s the wind blowing free, It’s the crest of the slope, It’s a beam, it’s a bay, it’s the thrill at the top. It’s the rain raining down, it’s a wild flood of talk, as March waters dissolve all the cares of the heart. The foot, the ground, it’s the heavy walk home, it’s the bird in the hand, it’s the slingshot’s fresh stone. It’s a bird in the sky, It’s a bird in the wood, It’s a stream, it’s a spring, it’s a morsel of food. It’s the base of a well, it’s the end of the line, the dismay on a face, it’s a loss, it’s a find. It’s a spear, it’s a spike it’s a tale, it’s a bill, it’s a tip, it’s a top, a drop dripping at will. A fish, a flash, a silvery glow, it’s the fresh morning light, it’s the spring of a bow It’s a truckload of wood, it’s the pain of the bite it’s cachaça drunk straight on the street in the night It’s the plan of the house, it’s a body in bed, it’s the car that got stuck, it’s the mud, it’s the mud! A step, a bridge, a frog and a child, it’s the landscape alive in the fresh morning light And the waters of March put the summer to sleep with the promise of life that the heart gets to keep. It’s a snake, it’s a stick, it is John, it is Joe, it’s a thorn in the hand, it’s a cut to the toe. And the waters of March put the summer to sleep with the promise of life that the heart gets to keep. A stick, a stone, its the end of the road, It’s what’s left of a stump, It’s a little alone A step, a bridge, a frog and a child It’s a lovely horizon, it’s a fever gone wild And the waters of March put the summer to sleep, with the promise of life that the heart gets to keep. -Pau, -Edra, -Im, -Inho -Aco, -Idro, -Ida, -Ol And the waters of March put the summer to sleep, with the promise of life that the heart gets to keep.

I’ve never heard this before. I decided to check it out after coming across a reference to it in Ian McDonald’s Science fiction novel Luna, New Moon. A Brazilian character reminisces about when his mother used to sing this song to him as a child.
What a artist ❤ Elis Regina I remember hear back in 60s this songs to yes, he was very popular in Sweden, that's samba stuff, I saw her on tv, 66-67 I was impressed ❤ rest in peace Elis we will always remember you ❤
Viva Brasil!
The lyrics don't is simple to understand if you translate into English. But if you know Tom Jobim, the wrote it, was with depression, so it get more easily to understand. The lyrics is so beautifull!
I don't speak Portuguese or know this artist well. I just know this is one of my favorite songs ever. I used to share a house with a Brazilian woman who said Elis is her favorite singer. I can understand why.
She wanted so desperately to come to the US to perform and be recognized here. Even though she didn't get her wish, the US and the world now come to her. And perhaps it's better this way, it preserves an air of mystery and a mystique about her that makes her even more interesting.
@@nato2panama Elis was very proud of our music. I'm pretty sure that many of her biographers said that she even desdained the US. Even if it were true (it might be), "desperate" is definitely not like her
@@Teodoroviski You are absolutely right "desperate" was not the right word to use. It gives the wrong impression. If I remember correctly, what happened was that Ellis and her partner had been very hospitable to Wayne Shorter when he visited Brazil and she thought that he might help her to make some headway in the US. She was disappointed when he didn't reciprocate but as you correctly stated she was not desperate at all.
Gracias Elis. Gracias Tom, o grande Tom.
So glad I just rediscovered this wonderful song, and discovered such a wonderful artist. She should have celebrated her 76th birthday today, but died so tragically at only 36. I don't know if I heard Águas de Março since I was a kid, in the 1970's, but it's been there in my backbone ever since. Perhaps my favorite Bossa. Obrigado!
Elis te amo, vc faz muuuuuito falta nesse mundo horroso e caótico. Bjs saudades.. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 Ana Lúcia/ rio de janeiro.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤
I felt the same way the first time I saw this - my parents had a different version on vinyl, a duet. I loved it even as a kid, but this one is incredible.
I have heard this song done by groups all over the world and Elis does it the best. I don't understand Portuguese but I think it says the waters of March? Just love how it sounds when 2 people are singing it back and forth to each other. Wish I knew what it was about. I just love Samba and Bossa Nova music. I think it is the most romantic in the world.
Yes, agreed. There’s a wonderful version in English by Susanna McCorkle if interested. And Jobim does a duet with Elis, if you haven’t heard that great version.
Complex and "all scattered" poem about the "Waters of March" that mean the end of summer for Brazil and all that implies, frogs and moves and all sorts of disjointed things brought by the rains. You may like this video of her beautiful daughter singing her own song th-cam.com/video/eaKhlTuhVXU/w-d-xo.html

Waters of March - English translation
A stick, a stone,
its the end of the road,
It’s what’s left of a stump,
It’s a little alone
It’s a sliver of glass,
It is life, it’s the sun,
It is night, it is death,
It’s a snare, it’s a gun
It’s the blossoming field,
It’s the candlelight’s blush,
It’s the knot in the wood,
it’s the song of the thrush
It’s the wood of the wind,
It’s the cliff and the fall,
It is Mystery’s depths,
It is nothing at all
It’s the wind blowing free,
It’s the crest of the slope,
It’s a beam, it’s a bay,
it’s the thrill at the top.
It’s the rain raining down,
it’s a wild flood of talk,
as March waters dissolve
all the cares of the heart.
The foot, the ground,
it’s the heavy walk home,
it’s the bird in the hand,
it’s the slingshot’s fresh stone.
It’s a bird in the sky,
It’s a bird in the wood,
It’s a stream, it’s a spring,
it’s a morsel of food.
It’s the base of a well,
it’s the end of the line,
the dismay on a face,
it’s a loss, it’s a find.
It’s a spear, it’s a spike
it’s a tale, it’s a bill,
it’s a tip, it’s a top, a drop
dripping at will.
A fish, a flash,
a silvery glow,
it’s the fresh morning light,
it’s the spring of a bow
It’s a truckload of wood,
it’s the pain of the bite
it’s cachaça drunk straight
on the street in the night
It’s the plan of the house,
it’s a body in bed,
it’s the car that got stuck,
it’s the mud, it’s the mud!
A step, a bridge,
a frog and a child,
it’s the landscape alive
in the fresh morning light
And the waters of March
put the summer to sleep
with the promise of life
that the heart gets to keep.
It’s a snake, it’s a stick,
it is John, it is Joe,
it’s a thorn in the hand,
it’s a cut to the toe.
And the waters of March
put the summer to sleep
with the promise of life
that the heart gets to keep.
A stick, a stone,
its the end of the road,
It’s what’s left of a stump,
It’s a little alone
A step, a bridge,
a frog and a child
It’s a lovely horizon,
it’s a fever gone wild
And the waters of March
put the summer to sleep,
with the promise of life
that the heart gets to keep.
-Pau, -Edra, -Im, -Inho

Here are the English lyrics to Waters of March by Tom Jobim
A stick, a stone
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass
It is life, it's the sun
It is night, it is death
It's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms
A fox in the brush
A knot in the wood
The song of a thrush
The wood of the wind
A cliff, a fall
A scratch, a lump
It is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free
It's the end of the slope
It's a beam, it's a void
It's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of the strain
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground
The flesh and the bone
The beat of the road
A slingshot's stone
A fish, a flash
A silvery glow
A fight, a bet
The range of a bow
The bed of the well
The end of the line
The dismay in the face
It's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike
A point, a nail
A drip, a drop
The end of the tale
A truckload of bricks
In the soft morning light
The shot of a gun
In the dead of the night
A mile, a must
A thrust, a bump
It's a girl, it's a rhyme
It's a cold, it's the mumps
The plan of the house
The body in bed
And the car that got stuck
It's the mud, it's the mud
Afloat, adrift
A flight, a wing
A hawk, a quail
The promise of spring
And the riverbank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
A stick, a stone
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump
It's a little alone
A snake, a stick
It is John, it is Joe
It's a thorn in your hand
And a cut in your toe
A point, a grain
A bee, a bite
A blink, a buzzard
A sudden stroke of night
A pin, a needle
A sting, a pain
A snail, a riddle
A wasp, a stain
A pass in the mountains
A horse and a mule
In the distance the shelves
Rode three shadows of blue
And the riverbank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of life
In your heart, in your heart
A stick, a stone
The end of the road
The rest of a stump
A lonesome road
A sliver of glass
A life, the sun
A knife, a death
The end of the run
And the riverbank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of all strain
It's the joy in your heart

Letra:
É pau, é pedra
É o fim do caminho
É um resto de toco
É um pouco sozinho
É um caco de vidro
É a vida, é o Sol
É a noite, é a morte
É um laço, é o anzol
É peroba do campo
O nó da madeira
Caingá, candeia
É o matinta-pereira
É madeira de vento
Tombo da ribanceira
É um mistério profundo
É o queira ou não queira
É o vento ventando
É o fim da ladeira
É a viga, é o vão
Festa da cumieira
É a chuva chovendo
É conversa ribeira
Das águas de março
É o fim da canseira
É o pé é o chão
É a marcha estradeira
Passarinho na mão
Pedra de atiradeira
É uma ave no céu
É uma ave no chão
É um regato, é uma fonte
É um pedaço de pão
É o fundo do poço
É o fim do caminho
No rosto o desgosto
É um pouco sozinho
É um estrepe, é um prego
É uma ponta, é um ponto
É um pingo pingando
É uma conta, é um conto
É um peixe, é um gesto
É uma prata brilhando
É a luz da manhã
É o tijolo chegando
É a lenha, é o dia
É o fim da picada
É a garrafa de cana
Estilhaço na estrada
É o projeto da casa
É o corpo na cama
É o carro enguiçado
É a lama, é a lama
É um passo, é uma ponte
É um sapo, é uma rã
É um resto de mato
Na luz da manhã
São as águas de março
Fechando o verão
É a promessa de vida
No teu coração
É uma cobra, é um pau
É João, é José
É um espinho na mão
É um corte no pé
São as águas de março
Fechando o verão
É a promessa de vida
No teu coração
É pau, é pedra
É o fim do caminho
É um resto de toco
É um pouco sozinho
É um passo, é uma ponte
É um sapo, é uma rã
É um belo horizonte
É uma febre terçã
São as águas de março
Fechando o verão
É a promessa de vida
No teu coração
Adoro saudades para sempre Elis.

Por siempre imortal..viva la arte buena
I don't speak Portuguese or know this artist well. I just know this is one of my favorite songs ever. I used to share a house with a Brazilian woman who said Elis is her favorite singer. I can understand why.
She was so lovely and beautiful.
Brazil is a state of mind #bossanova forever
Was
Mesmerizing. And that ending! Sweetnes incarnate.
You make me cry and laugh in the same breath, that's love so I heard.
Pimentinha, eu te amo.
Perfect angle on the piano playing.
ELIS REGINA is without equal. I've been a fan of her music from the early 1990s, when I spent some time in Brazil. LOVE HER MUSIC.
She wanted so desperately to come to the US to perform and be recognized here. Even though she didn't get her wish, the US and the world now come to her. And perhaps it's better this way, it preserves an air of mystery and a mystique about her that makes her even more interesting.
Are you sure? From what I know, like many other Brazilian musicians, she never really cared about the US
@@Teodoroviski I read about an encounter she had with jazz great Wayne Shorter. That's where I got it.
Criatura belíssima, carismática, envolvente. Uma das maiores expressões da música brasileira.
This song makes me happy, but simultaneously makes me tear up a bit. I don't know why.
So elegant, like a dream.
Imortal. A maior intérprete da música brasileira. Saudades.
ELIS A MELHOR CANTORA DO BRASIL......VIVA.....
This for me is the essence of bosa Nova, and one of the best version i have heard!
In fact , its not really bossa nova. It doesnt have a defined stile. It's just brazilian song.
canzone bellissima ....grande interpretazione🙂
Mamá de María Rita 😢❤
Exelente Elis Regina una Idola aqui en México!! Saludos Brasil del alma!!
This is so amazing and the piano progression is beautiful
Tom Jobim is a Maestro
Gracias Elis.
Gracias Tom, o grande Tom.
So glad I just rediscovered this wonderful song, and discovered such a wonderful artist. She should have celebrated her 76th birthday today, but died so tragically at only 36.
I don't know if I heard Águas de Março since I was a kid, in the 1970's, but it's been there in my backbone ever since. Perhaps my favorite Bossa. Obrigado!
Ainda insuperável. :)
Elis te amo, vc faz muuuuuito falta nesse mundo horroso e caótico.
Bjs saudades..

Don't understand the words at all but she's mesmerizing to watch
even though i speak English, i can proudly say i love this song. I don’t speak Portuguese but its so cool how music can unite us like this
so beautiful, in every way, never seen this before, how incredible
Araketu sempre sera
MPB , man
I felt the same way the first time I saw this - my parents had a different version on vinyl, a duet. I loved it even as a kid, but this one is incredible.
Brasilian music baby
❤❤❤viva Elis.
Wow this is one of the most fascinating songs I’ve ever heard…I don’t understand more than a couple words but wow mind blown 🤯
Masterpiece ✨✨✨
Wonderful, rythmatic performance, stunning. Captures the pulse and 'Joy in your Hearts'
