    I make a point of saying this is dangerous and no one should attempt this at home, but.... I have a horse who rears when anxious. He came to me with these issues and that is why he's still with me, and will be with me until the end. With that said, I have found success by assigning a command to his rearing. He is, thankfully, very clever and picked up on this pretty quickly. (It should also be said that he has both self preservation and fitness, and does not rear high enough to fall over himself.) Now, because I can ask him to rear and it has become a chore, he doesn't offer to rear anymore. Your training technique, where you "help them go up," is spot on. Making it a less comfortable chore, instead of an escape from pressure, does wonders to discourage the behavior. Well done.

      We adopted a 2 year old dog 10 years ago. She didnt know anything, however, she is smart! So she quickly learned sit, stay, come, and lay down, but she was a jumper, and barked alot. So we did the same thing. Taught her that jumping was a 'hug,' and after the hug, was 'done.'
      So we could ask for a hug, and she learned that she needed to ask, and that we could say yes or no. My husband coming home from work, great time for a hug- AFTER he came in, put down his stuff, and was asking for one. But 'Can I hug our friends 3 year old?' No, you cant, kids dont get hugs. Same with barking. Taught her 'speak' and 'whisper' and 'shhh.' Now she speaks and whispers whenever asked, but will shhh when we ask. I didnt want say she was never allowed to bark or jump/hug ever again, but that there are appropriate and INappropriate times.
      I know a dog is not a horse, and that the circumstance is not the same, but I guess I was just testifying that sometimes, assigning a command allows for controll of it.
      Sorry- I'll go back to my seat at the peanut gallery.

      I never had much luck with asking my horse to passage when he was jigging in anxiety. Arabians don't just figure out that it's easier to stop jigging/passaging.

      I did the same with a mare I had when I was 14, but I did it from the saddle. Made her rear until she was sick of it and she never did it on her own again. It only took about a week, 15 minutes or so at a time, then we’d go enjoy a nice long trail ride. Reverse psychology of sorts yah?

      this is commonly used in dog training, if you put a command to an unwanted behavior; they see it as a trick and will only start to do it for a reward.

    • @Maniamanea
      @Maniamanea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have to disengage the hind quarters before the horse is on two legs. Once it's up there it's too late. You have to see the signs that the horse is about to rear and then disengage before it actually happens. No horse rears without physically preparing their body to rear and that's the signs you have to look for.

    I have a quarter pony when I try to lunge her to the left she goes into a mode where she runs full speed past me to the right bulks then rears.I have tried everything but she will not lunge to the left.Any advice?I was ran over by a horse about 7 yrs ago and broke my wrist I am scared when she runs full speed I will end up being run over again.

    • @allisonarts7540
      @allisonarts7540 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sarah joseph your fear is reasonable for being scared of being run over again, but that’s your problem. Horses can tell when you are afraid and unconfident and will take advantage of that. If you want to establish respect and stop that horse from running at you, first you have to stand your ground. You can not move backwards when that horse runs at you, then that tells the horse hey I’m in charge of this human and I can do what I want. If anything when that horse charges make it uncomfortable, hit them with the lead rope, do anything but move backwards or stop the training. Use pressure and release. Don’t stop the training until you horse lunges a few circles without acting up. Once they do a good few cicles call them in pet them reward them, even end the training that day. I know this is a lot but this is how I trained a pony I am currently working with, it works! I hope this helps good luck training :)

    • @olocippicolo
      @olocippicolo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try keeping it in smaller circles, it'll help to limit her speed (smaller is harder to gallop). Make sure she listen well to your vocal cues and positioning. Start on her good side, then switch to the left side when you both feel comfortable. It's all pressure-release. Start slow, steady, and when you're ready, expand the circle a little, if she goes full speed, make it smaller. You could then ask her to go faster, by your own command, not because she decided to. With the smaller circle, it'll be a bit difficult for her. Like the guy in the video, he said something along those lines (the horse is about to rear) "Oh you wanna go up? OK but let's go even higher" So he "does" what the horse wants, but with a bit of discomfort, so the horse realises that it's not worth it.

    • @olocippicolo
      @olocippicolo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might have been caused from a bad past experience (poor handling, abuse, etc), does she only do that with you? or everybody?

    Tips for a 3 year old racehorse on stall rest? He's explosive reactive and typically goes straight up. Vet says not allowed to move his feet more than a walk. He was a bottle baby. Knows nothing. 17 hands. I just want to stay alive till I can actually teach him. 50 days stall rest left. I don't want to resort to stud chain over gums, but that's what he knows from track and breeder.

      @@missdonica2190 no, but it's turning out ok now.
      I had to abandon the idea of hand walking and just moved him from one stall to the other for cleaning. I always wore gloves and made sure there was no one in the vicinity.
      He's been turned out now for about 4 months and he's turned into a pretty sensible guy.
