Edit: Minor mistake at 2:49, Grassy Terrain actually cuts Earthquake's power in half so Rillaboom is actually nerfed way harder. Had no clue this was a thing lol
Grassy terrain has done that since gen 7 was a bit popular especially in vgc 2018

Mew losing teleport is just weird especially since one of it's main gimmicks is that it can learn pretty much every move except for specific ones to a Pokemon like Chatot's Chatter
in fact Teleport in general was pretty much gutted in gen 9 as right now it's currently the signature move for the ralts line

The Greninja nerf strikes me as a way, not to stay away from mega evolution per se, rather to gradually get away from Ash Ketchum, since we will get another characters come next year.

And I cannot thank the developers enough. The whole "Ash" concept crossover with the games was so cringy.
They could just gave Greninja a Mega and it would be just fine but they wanted to go for the anime Fanservice.
Greninja Ash was a mistake in the anime.
It wasn't bad n the games but protean was better before the nerf
And yet all the Ash cap Pikachu are still in the game.
@@EmeralBookwise and I’d even say the ash caps are a waste of space they have nothing to offer aside from anime nostalgia compared to the cosplay Pikachus (which are more worthwhile bringing back and had better cosmetic differences) and in every way and objectively inferior to regular pikachu.
Rillaboom does not use EQ in singles because it’s damage is halved in grassy terrain. It still used high horsepower even in singles

on top of that Grassy Glide also got its power nerfed in gen 9, as it's power went from 70 down to 60, seems like this was mostly targeted to the monkey since he was the one that spammed grassy glide
but still losing high horsepower was a blow to rillaboom as now he's forced to use stomping tantrum instead
How on earth can Mew not learn Teleport. It's literally the pokemon than can learn everything cause every pokemon (in lore) is a descendant from it
And this is why I knew I wouldn't like these games overall just like the last couple gens. I remember even saying as soon as I saw dexit things were just gonna get more and more complicated to keep track of. And now it's such a clusterfuck with no logic some changes make sense where as others leave you scratching your head

Small nitpicks: Knock Off isn’t affected by Technician since it’s base power is above 60 and while Crowned Sword Zacian was obviously much more important in VGC, regular Zacian still ended up being banned from Uber to AG in Smogon because it was still just that OP in singles.
technically scizor can run thief which is 60 power i guess. so disappointed to learn his move pool go gutted after shiny hunting a scyther.
@@kuriboharmy you can still evolve it into Klaeavor at least. Worse defensive typing but a neat move in Stone Axe to set up hazards.

While I have no personal strong attachment to it, removing Scald from everything feels weird. It felt like a move a lot of people liked to have for Water-types and the utility of a Water move that could burn seemed like a nice option.
It's also dumb that the only Pokemon coded to have it has a better version of it, as mentioned in the video

It's weird because scald was only a big problem in smogon singles, which is not a official meta game
And Chilling Water feels like an over correction
It feels weird competitively but feels logical when you think about it outside of competitive. It felt weird that literally any water Pokemon could use it. Even water ice types… The ones that live in cold waters. Like how the heck were they heating up the water anyways? Its not like they’re like Volcanion who had the fire type to make spitting hot water make sense. Half of the Pokemon that learn scald don’t even learn a single fire type attack yet have the power to blast scalding hot water?

I don’t think Slowking is as affected by losing Teleport as Slowbro/Mew/Blissey since it gets Chilly Reception, which switches it out and sets Snow. And since Slowking is slow, it’ll usually go last, so it’s almost like still having Teleport most of the time, except better because it overwrites weather.

The removal of scald I think was also to try and make stall less oppressive with the timer still being at 20 minutes, however Toxapex was one pokemon that suffered greatly from the nerf of recovery moves and the removal of scald, plus the existence of Garganacl makes life even harder for the starfish thanks to Salt Cure which destroys toxapex's longevity
edit: should also be mentioned that Protean and Libero also do not work at all if a pokemon with that ability terasterlizes, yeah that mechanic completely disables those 2 abilities if a pokemon has it
I should also note that Terrains in general got hit in gen 9 with the introduction of Ice Spinner, a pretty strong physical ice move at 80 power and does remove terrain
but in general i find that Ice got some love this gen with hail being reworked to snow (a neutral weather that also provides a 50% def boost to all ice types), ice spinner which i already mentioned being a good move, but also some pretty strong ice types with Cetitan, Baxcalibur, Chien-Pao and especially Iron Bundle (that robo delibird is a menace as it got banned from singles due to nothing being able to resist both Hydro Pump & Freeze-Dry)

Plus, Scald is just straight up the best water type move outside of signature moves like Origin Pulse. A base 80 power Water type move that’s also really easy to just spam to fish crippling burns is just plain ridiculous. I do feel like it’s extreme to remove it from everyone’s movepool, but overall feels like it was a better decision in the long run.
There's a reason why showdown once had a no scald ladder. That move was very busted
@@Castersvarog I think either nerfing its base power or burn chance would have worked better and maybe restrict the distribution a little bit by taking it out of the worst abusers of the move. But instead of that, they essentially nuked it to being a signature move to volcanion which that pokemon has no reason to ever use it over steam eruption which is literally a superior scald in every way except for one thing. Its gen 7 dark void all over again where the move only need slight adjustments but gamefreak instead went full super nova for the nerf.
Lurantis getting nerfed really hurt me, it is one of my all time favorite Pokemon
Don’t worry they are still perfectly viable with trick room ranked double battles.
They actually makes a really good special attacker after 1 leaf storm.
I use Lurantis regularly cuz it’s my fav Pokémon . Water tera blast with +2 SpA can do some wonders ;)
Knock Off/Superpower and the other Tutor moves will probably come back in the DLC like every other gen. But man does it hurt how they nerfed Krookodile.

A pokemon that was weirdly nerfed was Lumineon, it lost Roost (from legends arceus), Scald, Defog and Toxic, but gained Helping Hand, Encore, Dazzling Gleam and Chilling waters so that was a weird choice in every way
Lumineon is my favorite water type next to pyukumuku and Wartortle.
@@shatteredsentient5321 same as meee, it´s my favorite pokemon, I use it in doubles as a tailwind supporter with storm drain :)
I feel the loss of Scald really says bad things about the availability of status effects outside of the obvious typing.
It’s like someone at Game Freak tried Gen 8 singles, kept getting beaten by stall teams and said, “Yeah, we’re getting rid of this play style.”

Battle bond got kinda buffed but mainly nerfed.
Buffs: the stat increases are better than becoming ash greninja. You are significantly faster and stronger at +1 than as ash greninja. And because the only stat increasing move it gets is swords dance (which you'll probably not be using)
Nerfs: no water shuriken buff
You lose boosts when you switch out
Only happens once a battle
Stall in its entirety was definitely the biggest nerf. I remember the comments when the leaks came out.
"Smogon loves stall. Gamefreak does not."
Honestly, most of these nerfs felt way too harsh, especially to Scizor, Greninja & scald users.

No way Scizor doesn't appreciate this gen.
Sure losing knock off is iffy but with Bug bite being replaced by Pounce (which is 10 bp weaker but lowers speed) and the buff it gets by getting the best move it could ask for,Close combat.
I'd say it's a fair trade
@@siberiangopnik thing is when you do the calculation of technician boosted Pounce compared to X-Scissor...pounce doesn't even come close to X-Scissor in terms of damage unlike with bug bite, so the red metal bug is better off using X-Scissor for bug STAB
@@bulborb8756Scald is weaker than Surf, yet that didn't stop Scald from outclassing Surf in 95% of situations.
Yes it's weaker, however dropping the target's Speed by 1-Stage seems like a pretty good secondary effect that could turn the tides (imagine that combined with Sticky Web). Speed control is important, and being able to lower the target's Speed reliability is a big deal.
Also you do know that U-Turn is basically a staple Scizor move right? So it already has some Bug STAB to use, yes it switches the user out, but that and Bullet Punch took Scizor from underwhelming to one of the best mons in the game in combination with Technician.
Weavile lost Triple Axel and knock-off this generation, and his niche was replaced by Chien-Pao :(
Edit: Yes this was mentioned in the video. Something else I could mention was that due to large amount of fairy types and a focus on hyper offense, dragon types got a soft nerf meaning I can’t use Garchomp anymore :(
Actually Garchomp is still a great Pokémon. If you run a Tera Steel Garchomp to avoid the fairy and ice weaknesses, you’ll be good. Murkrow and Garchomp are an infamous pair right now in the early meta.
Your edit is kind of ironic considering dragonite, garchomp, and roaring moon are very good right now. Some people are even saying this is the best dragon has been since gen 5.

I don’t think the treasures count as their “nerf” is 10 less points to their base stat total. Besides, chien-pao is essentially a brand-new, superior, LEGENDARY replacement for Weavile. Weavile has base 120 attack and 125 speed. Chien-pao has 120 attack (as a 1.0.1, it was 130 pre-patch) and 135 speed. So yeah. Chien-pao is strictly better than Weavile. Besides, bisharp basically got BUFFED thanks to being able to use that eviolite. Thanks kingambit, you significantly helped my love of bisharp.
Even though Chien-Pao has the same attack stat as Weavile, it's gonna hit harder right off the bat because of its ability

the lurantis nerf hurt my SOUL man its my second favorite pokemon and they just fucked it up for no reason like, even if tera fighting made it more usable it still wouldn’t have been good compared to its competition

Toxapex was absolutely DESTROYED between Scald and Knock Off.
also the nerf to recovery moves not named Strength Sap was also a harsh blow, cause now only having 8 PP mean's that toxapex really can't stall out like it used to.

The Scald nerf really bothers me, I would just made the burn 10% at base 80, but they could've also nerfed the power to 50-60 with a 30% change to burn.

ZX is a car brand, I hope it won’t be called that. Just call them XY remasters since I’m pretty sure that’s all they’ll be.
A lot of Pokémon got nerfed by losing 1 of the moves from the isle of armour. Weavile lost triple axel, rillaboom lost grassy glide, vaporeon lost flip turn etc. Also making scald exclusive to Volcanion is upsetting
The terrain effect in the field also got nerfed. Only covering the middle circle of a battle.
Now that you mention that 'gamefreak trying to remove all mega evolution things' I was messing around with PokeHex to check something on a Scarlet save I have... And I found that in the pokedex section, there's a check to put Mega Slowbro as 'seen' for the pokedex, but every other pokemon that had a mega in previous gens don't and like the Johtonian Wooper and Kantonian Tauros they don't have actual page entries in-game... I just find it super weird.
Probably because they didn't want to skip a form number.
The Stall nerf as a whole is the single biggest nerf in Pokémon I have ever seen.
No Scald
Recover only 5P.P.
Knock off only for dark types like toxic got reserved for poison types in Gen 8
So many new wallbreakers and so much hyper-offence
It's ridiculous.
@Anonymous Thoughts That's actually ironic because I am pretty sure the Pokémon Company liked tanky Pokémon just a few years ago.
In Gen 4, both Cynthia and Palmer had a Milotic because they saw how Milotic is abused as a tank in Gen 3.
Gen 5 introduced Ferrothorn so ...
And in Gen 7 we got an even better staller.
Even Gen 8 didn't leave any major scar on stalling. So I don't know why all of a sudden was this unnecessary action taken.
And I personally think it was unnecessary and not over-abused because Stallers like Toxapex prevented some OP Pokémon from running wild like Greninja and Blaziken.
Zacian's ultimate counter, was a staller too.
So stall was definitely an integral part of Pokémon.
It's mostly just been funny watching the copium being injected by certain people trying to force Stall to work no matter what has to be broken about Pokemon Vagesil in the process
I'd blame Toxapex for this nerf. That thing was the most infuriating wall in competitive Pokémon and it had access to all of these moves. It did its job at stalling so well that it got many of these moves either nerfed or removed.
Gen 7 was the last game with consistency
Something tells me all the nerfs to stall teams are to get the battles moving faster and keep the attention of the current generations.

I have a Contrary Lurantis in Sword that has both Superpower and Leaf Storm, but also Giga Drain and Leech Life. I used him mostly for raids, and having the flexibility to either boost my stats or heal after every move was satisfying. His name, appropriately enough, is Dracula.
I’m sure some moves + maybe some new ones will come back in the DLC. Maybe not all Pokémon will get their lost moves back for themselves, but in regards to actually making the moves available to teach, I’m hoping they just expand the TM Machine list instead of dedicating an NPC to teaching them. Scald definitely needs to stay gone though, or at least don’t give it to the bulky water types.

2:49 this is wrong. Grassy Terrain halves the damage of Earthquake so Rilla always runs High Horsepower.

I'll miss Ash-Greninja, I still like using mine whenever I play USUM with friends, but normal Protean Greninja is cool too.
I don't think the nerfs were intentional. Its just that with the new TM system, they removed most TRs, some TMs, and move tutor so the only ones who get moves like Superpower, Expanding Force, Flip Turn, and Knock Off are those that learn naturally.
So that's where chain breeding or regular breeding will come in?
It's totally intentional. They change the level-up movesets of many Pokemon.
Very intentional because of the way home importing now works.
It's debatably harder to make a script that will determine the Pokemon's moves when it's exported, then to just keep the data stored when it's imported.
They made a deliberate decision that took effort to bleach Pokemon's movesets when coming from home, that wasn't strictly necessary, but here we are.
Holding your pokemon hostage, and turning them into wild captures for all purposes.
I still find it comical that Battle Bond got nerfed and not just Ash-Greninja itself. Game Freak just didn't want to make the model.

They don't make models for all the old pokemon every game either. With one or two exceptions that actually did get redone at some point, iirc maybe Haxorus got one, every single gen 6 and before pokemon has used the same models since X and Y, in every single pokemon game that used models, just occasionally with altered textures and animations. I don't remember if Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon and DX are exceptions to that.

The biggest nerf I hate is one many wouldn’t even know about. Flareon can’t learn flamecharge or super power anymore. This particular annoys me because I want flareon to be good but gamefreak do nothing to help this pokemon and are actively hurting it for no reason. It doesn’t need nerfs. It needs buffs! Especially to that abysmal speed.
Even worse is that Flame Charge is still a TM, its just that Flareon can't learn it anymore.
Ikr?! Remove a move from a Pokemon with an already limited movepool and taunt us by having the tm in the game but not allowing the pokemon who needs it most to learn it.
Bullying Flareon has to be someone at Game Freak's kink.
...actually, looking at it that way, and how most of the Eeveelutions are lewded anyways...
We simply must bully Flareon harder. Harder. Slaanesh thirsts for Flareon's debasement.
Scald nerf has got to be the worst one
Removing scald from my girl Coalossal is a huge sad day for me cause it would've been a great move to use when teralstyllising into Tera Water type, obviously there's Tera Blast but thats only gonna be in this gen so it's a temporary fix
Don't forget, there's no TM for Focus Energy. Which means Inteleon can't learn it. Which means its hidden ability Sniper is kind of useless.

It's honestly austounding how many things they managed to nerf this gen while simultaneously introducing some of the most broken Pokémon to date...
And none of them would have seen use if they didn't nuke Zacian from orbit
Slowking basically still has teleport, since he got chilly reception. Now hes a very good snow setter. The only sad thing is, that he lost scald as well.
They basically gave the “Gtassy Glide” gimmick to bug types with the move impression. The drawback is you can only use it right on switch in like fake out, but it has 90 base power and if you Tera as a Bug type you get the same power and Rillaboom grass terrain glide
Haxorus got it too which is weird
First Impression is an older move than Grassy Glide
9:07 Gen 6 actually buffed Poliwrath and Beautifly, but not Politoed and Dustox.
Scizor isn't too sad about losing Bug Bite. Pounce is a good enough replacement and the speed drop lets it get the jump on things switching in sometimes.
Or you could use Tera steel with choice band and bullet punch spam a sweep. Works for me.

Honestly.
The loss of bug bite is of course a nerf to Scizor in a vacuum, bit in practice I think it's a net buff, because fewer people will erroneously choose Bug Bite over U Turn, which is usually the worse option, unless you're doing something specific

Now we know why they got rid of battle bond Greninja. Hindsight is 20/20
I had called this as early as we knew about the change. I never really cared that much about Greninja so I’m okay with this change.

Knockoff isn’t technician boosted. Technician boosts moves base 60 or lower. Knock off is base 65
I also remember that in gen 8 if you swapped in a fairy Pokémon or protected against the move outrage it would just interrupt the Pokémon using the move and they were free to chose another move or switch out. Now outrage is still interrupted by doing this but the Pokémon using it will get confused now.

Its defensive utility and great move on weather teams has really been gutted
Contrary plus having access to false swipe made it an amazing shiny hunting team member too! Malamar had its own benefits but lurantis having access to false swipe helped out in so many situations where a target has healing moves
i'm hoping the battle bond change is actually for when other pokemon copy the ability and the model is added when greninja gets added proper
Some of these nerfs are really annoying. Especially considering the monumental power creep this gen.
Honeslty I have to say I hate these nerfs, especially zamazenta, scizor, krookidile and greninja

Honestly Protean was way too broken to be allowed, it made the battles not fun at all when you had to deal with so many types at once in a single Pokemon.
Proten and libro are basically the same ability now which is weird

Cinderace suffered the most. Gren might get banned from NatDex UU while I don't see cinderace anywhere.
While I agree that making Scald exclusive to a Pokémon that gets an objectively better version of it was certainly a choice made by a person, there's no way to reasonably nerf Scald outside of flat-out killing the move itself imo. Every Pokémon that could use Scald was using Scald, there was no variance
It has far too much utility and 70% of the time a person clicked the move, they were just fishing for a burn, which in any format of competitive Pokémon, let alone VGC, was well worth the reward
They should've just flat out removed it if they were going to do this.
lot's of pokemon lost toxic for some reason.
this move used to be learnt by almost any pokemon and now it is almost exclusive to poison types.
luckily most pokemon did not mind this nerf that much.
in my opinion I never understood why toxic was a universal TM for many years, so it being exclusive to poison types (with a few exceptions like breloom and vespiquen for example) just makes more sense to me
What's funny is my boy quagsire learns toxic by level up the gen where the tm is no longer available, that's bias in the best way possible

I know it isn’t guaranteed, but I want that to be the case so badly… It might be the anime rights requiring them to not have him in the game before he becomes available. A similar thing happened in Pokémon Masters EX, where they had to remove the Pokémon 2019 theme from the game files COMPLETELY after the event ended. This might be the reverse, with Ash-Greninja only being allowed in the game once he can be transferred in.

That's the point, Scald is a lazy move.
Low risk-high reward.
H. Zoroark already has base 60 in it's defences so it doesn't make any sense for Gamefreak to drop its speed from base 110 to 105. In order to nerf it.
I'm still salty that tyranitar lost pursuit
pursuit was one of many moves cut from gen 8, and remains cut, but tbh t.tar can live without it cause he's always been a strong pokemon
@bulborb8756 Yeah but pursuit was one of Tyranitars best utility moves to take out powerful ghost and psychic types. Without pursuit Tyranitar is starting to fall behind in singles
I think I was most surprised by seeing some of these mons that are even on the game yet than the nerfs 😂

Believe it or not most Lurantis movesets never relied on superpower, they prefer Leaf Storm high damage, so this nerve isnt as big as some people say it is

Weirdly enough Magikarp was also nerfed and can no longer learn hydro pump or bounce
They nerfed the hell out of the old mons and introduced like 10 insanely OP non legendaries lol
I hated the move culling of Gen 8, but I DESPISE this changing of movepools with still available moves for then I can state. They keep stepping into this horrible area of changing legacy Pokemon that just feels like the are going to rug pull the entire defining feature of being able to use Pokemon caught in games from the 2000s.

I really wouldn’t consider the Pokémon losing access to particular moves as nerfs. More of temporary nerfs.
Since an expansion pass or future game will most likely bring those moves back as tutor moves. This ain’t the first time Scizor didn’t have access to Bug Bite or Knock Off at the start of a generation. Hell, Lurantis didn’t have Superpower when Sun/Moon first came out. It only got it when USUM was released and brought back move tutors.
When that inevitably happens, I do pray that Scald is among those tutor moves since it’s not a TM this generation. A lot of Water-types seriously need it.

The ash-greninja nerf is soo outrageous,game freak has been trying to remove every trace of mega evolution(the coolest and most popular gimmick out of the three) since last gen for some reason and that’s why they retconned ash-greninja but they made roaring moon that is clearly mega salamence with a slightly different design and the Pokédex entry literally says it,what this means is that they’re removing all the older stuff that has even the slightest resemblance to mega evolution but creating new stuff based on the older stuff to gain attention because mega evolution received the most hype and attention out of all the games and especially the gimmicks.They’re trying to retcon it and profit from it in the way way possible.That’s just stupid and disrespectful to all the people who made mega evolution and to the fans who loved it.Mega evolution may have been flawed but no gimmick is flawless and mega evolution had the most lore and story behind it and was the best one design wise.

I disagree on the Scizor nerf. It did not learn Bug Bite in Gen 8, but now it learns CLOSE COMBAT
Also he can Tera Steel to half his fire weakness and get a 2x Stab on technician-boosted Bullet punch
Scizor is not nerf, it's just being played differently
So sad about Lurantis. It's one of my favorite pokemon 😭
Funny enough, I use a Special Attack Contrary Lurantis in some five and six star raids.
Leaf Storm is Nasty Plot + Damage, meaning you can teralyze super quickly. Giga Drain gives you sustainability when you get low on health. Ability Shield is the kicker here: You'll not lose the Contrary Ability during a raid. Is this better than Iron Hands/Azumarill with Belly Drum and Drain Punch/Shell Bell? Almost all the time no. (But it IS safer) Is it better than Gholdengo? Almost all the time No.
However in random public lobbies, there'll be times where people trigger the shield phase of a Tera Raid early and then that Pokemon will reset all stats means all I have to do is just spam Leaf Storm more. You WILL Tera early more often (though Leaf Storm can miss) and you can finish off even a majority of six star pokemon raids quite quickly.
However the nerf of losing Super Power was quite sad. Lurantis also lost Safeguard, which is almost not important at all but it'd been nice as an option to protect against status effects in general outside of Covert Cloak.
The big downside is how many people abandon the raid when they see me lock in Lurantis.
That's a neat use I didn't think of! I'll keep that in mind as I put together my selection of raid pokemon. I think the loss of safeguard on a lot of pokemon really hurts as the tera raids like volcarona where it boosts sp def with quiver dance and spreads burn around the team with will-o-wisp are suuuuuper annoying to complete even with the cheering mechanics
