The important thing is that you are Ok. The rebuild will be an adventure in its self. On a positive note this happened in your back yard and not out at sea. Think positive and count your blessings. Nutshell will rise out of the ashes like the Phenix and go on to more exiting adventures.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. God was looking after you if you didn't go outside when you made your cuppa you would of been injured or killed. I can't believe the damage it has caused. What a bummer. That sucks so much. But we Aussies are so tough and I know you will rebuild her even better than what she was before. My love and prayers go out to you and your wife.
Gosh, I didn't recognize you at first! We met in La Paz, Mexico and you generously gave me advise on my spinnikkar and my Fleming wind vane (something that still defeats me :)) on Moonrise (our CAL34). We are now in Huatulco, Mexico, doing a full rebuild of engine and gearbox, using the delay necessitated by the quarantine. So relieved that you survived that nasty explosion unscathed - it is every sailors worst nightmare.
Hi Stephen. Great to hear from you. We are slowly getting the boat shipshape again. If you are heading South from Huatulco to Chiapas say G’day to some friends of ours there. Andreas and Karin. They are building a trimaran up on the hard. Hope your rebuild goes well. Cheers
@@LifeinaNutshell Magnus, we sure will. And good luck with your rebuild. Our biggest challenge has been finding parts for our 45 year old engine but we came good in the end. Many of the narrow boats (in the UK) use the same block so we sourced them from there. We hope to he on our way again in about a month. Hope you can get free as quickly.
Thank God you went above decks after putting the kettle on ! Have been following your adventure since Panama & know there is no one better equipped to bring Nutshell back to her former glory (& maybe a few improvements !!) than your good selves ! I write this from my Nicholson 30 in Liverpool Marina as the UK goes into semi lockdown !
Magnus my man. First time watching... bloody hell mate. It's tough to see a grown man cry .....I can't imagine the shock....so glad you are ok. So sorry about your boat... obviously God was not ready for you yet...guess he has plans for you...my prayers go out to you ...stay safe ...
Magnus, I love your positive attitude - that wiring etc has been exposed by the explosion giving you an opportunity to clean it all up. Well done mate! Most of us would run away with anger and frustration. You're an inspiration mate! Cheers
So So sorry about your boat, but very pleased you and your drive and intelligence is still intact. Hopefully you will rebuild and continue your lifestyle as this is probably my favorite channel . all best to the two of you
I am so happy you are both ok. I am so so sorry about the boat. I can't imagine how frightening that was - or how overwhelmed you both must be feeling. Thank you as always for sharing. My thoughts are with you - and of course you're already talking about rebuilding. I'd expect nothing less.
Bloody Hell mate, so sorry to see all that hard work you have been doing to Nutshell gone. Whats more important is, your OK, the boat is just a comodity but you are one of a kind. Good Luck and Good Health and we may see you on the Canals of Blighty again someday.
Thank goodness you're okay and the boat didn't catch fire or start taking on water. Wild. It's also a good reminder to for the rest of us to take care with propane and other fuel sources, have leak alarms and good ventilation.
I think all I need to say is you were in the right place at the right time. It could've been so much worse. At least you're both safe. And now plenty of work to get on with all the best to you both.
So glad you weren't injured or worse Magnus. Can all be repaired. Insurance will help. Gas is a scary thing in any yacht. Take care. Looking forward to seeing more videos always love them. Cheers :)
If there's one man I know can put that boat and its gas system safely back together Magnus, it's you! Just be thankful you weren't serioulsy hurt (maybe some skids eh) and Wendy wasn't on board, your boat wasn't burnt out and it didn't sink!! At least it will now be put together safe. Magnus So sorry to hear about this event You were very lucky to escape.... Typical you within 30 minutes already talking about reconstructing All my best wishes Johnny
Thank god you were outside and Wendy wasn't onboard, as usual Magnus you were thinking positively about the panels being blown off exposing the wiring to make the repair job easier. Magnus, you are a hero and what a positive guy you are. If there is a couple that'll pull out of this mess and rebuild Nutshell, it's you two. Good luck and all the very best, Stevie
FKIN ELL! i know you said an explosion on nuttie but... 😳😳😳😳😱😱😱😱😱 magnus, you are bloody blessed! you have a hell of a good guardian angel/spirit guide watching over you! im getting shivers down my spine watching this!
It is very lucky that you don't have to deal with fire damage on top of the explosion damage. Now you have an opportunity to correct a lot of access/accessibility problems you had. If you decide to keep the propane on board consider running the propane lines High inside the boat and inside PVC conduit that is sealed on the stove end where the hose attaches. This would force any leakes in the line to drain back into the propane locker and outside the hull not allowing it into the boat. I'll bet there was a hole worn in the line or a fitting that corroded in a hidden location that caused the buildup. I am so grateful this happened at anchor and you were the only one on board and on deck as well. Gods Bless.
I do hope every thing is going well for you. So sorry to see your problem.I hope all goes well for your refit so very sad. ALL THE VERY BEST AND GOOD LUCK . From Roger Dover Kent U.K
What a travesty!!! The only thing that matters is that you are AOK!!! I was truly moved by this horrible turn of events, and to hear the shock and hurt in your voice was extremely difficult to listen to. Then, the Magnus that we all know and love kicked in when you started talking about silver linings, as in being able to tidy up those hidden electronics! I know you'll rebuild her better than she was before!!! I sure hope you had insurance and that they treat you right! Prayers given in thanks for your safety, and continued prayers for your successful rebuild!
Boats can be repaired- thank God you were ok. There is only one Magnus - not replaceable. Our thoughts and best wishes go to you, and with your optimistic approach even in time of disaster, Nutshell will by now be on the mend.
Wow. All that beautiful woodwork, turned to splinters. But, there is a bright side, no one got hurt. You can rebuild the cabinetry, but not your life. Still, I'm glad that a dedicated full-time sailor convinced me to change from gas to an Origo non-pressurized alcohol stove. When we removed the hoses & piping for the LPG, we found numerous areas that were chafed where they passed thru the cabinets. It was time. The range was shot anyway. Remember, it's never so bad, that it can't be worse. The boat didn't sink, and you're OK.
I know I am way behind! Thank god you (Magnus) and of course Wendy are ok! I love you both, love your boat and adventures. One thing is for sure, If anyone can fix it Magnus can. You both have such great attitudes.
Mate you have every right to be emotional after what happened i fact your quite calm you have my admiration than God you was outside when this happened, its true what they say God loves n cares for good people take care ae n have a long happy sailing life cheers
Thank god you went out to check topside. Incredible amount of damage. But I hear the Aussie spirit is still alive when you straight away start cleaning up to rebuild.
I'm glad your okay. I broke the plastic nob that tightens the hose onto the propane tank in December. So I need a new hose with the regulator on it. It's hard to get at the hose's stove connection. My stove is in okay condition, but it's probably as old as my boat, 1970 Ericson 41. My house batteries could use an update too. After your horrible experience, it's time for me to go electric. I'm glad your fine. Your more important then that boat or any boat.
Bloody hell!! At least it didn't blow the bottom out of the boat. Just goes to show that's one tough old boat. Lot's of "house keepings" to get that straightened out!
Blloomin’ hell that was a big explosion!!!! There must have been gas in every compartment. A bit of a brutal way to start your galley refit. Not your usual style Magnus. Yep your Guardian Angel was at your shoulder on that day! Thank goodness as, though we haven’t met, we would have missed you young fella. 😘🏴☠️ At least the head door is easier to open. 🤭 And this too will pass ... (with some significant work) and Nutshell will look even younger and more gorgeous.
The Aussie spirit in full display. "At least all the wiring is exposed...I won't have to get to it." Glad no one was hurt. I wish you the best, mate. Keep us updated. And may God bless you.
Magnus - so glad that you were not hurt. If anyone can rebuild the "old girl"its you. Hope your insurance pays out promptly. Typical you though - seeing a silver lining - "now I can see things and tidy up my wiring". Thoughts are with you. Take care and good luck with the rebuild. I guess the good news for us is we get to see you plan and rebuild - that I'm looking forward to. Cheers
My God....it's just heart breaking! And explosion that size could have taken the bottom out as well. So fortunate you were Magnus. I've never trusted LPG and I've seen what it did to a building as well. I know you both will make it a nice boat again. My best Wishes.......Mark
Holy mother of an explosion - the longer I watched the video the more I realized how lucky you (and your relatives) were - I guess the big hatches all around the boat saved it. All the best wishes.
Good to see your ok. A lesson for everyone. LPG is heavier than air, it will sink. Most folk assume they will smell it if there's a leak, but that's not always so, it doesn't always register in your mind until its too late. I fitted an alarm which incorporated a 30 min timed auto close valve, worth the piece of mind. Good luck with tidy up.
This experience has been emotional for many people whom have never met you. Emotional because of the great couple you are. I have no doubt that we will see more of you both and I bet my bottom dollar it will be worth waiting for.
Well the Hans Christian lamp survived. I just found your channel this week and found your mechanical skills some of the best I have seen as a sailor compared to other channels. At least your were not inside. I am sure you will have it together in no time.

I'm so glad you are oK. I know the feeling but not on a boat. My beautiful Jeep Commander was totalled in 2 seconds. Day before yesterday 3/12 And I was very lucky too. When you said you stepped into the cockpit for a minute, your saving grace. I truly hope you had insurance to cover this. The rebuild will be a lighter burden. kisses and hugs to you and Wendy. Terrible scare for her too.
Magnus, gosh, what a horrible experience and so glad you are safe. A sailors worst nightmare!! We are full time cruisers and constantly worry about propane on board. When you are ready, can you help us fellow cruisers by sharing with us your main learning experience/conclusions? Did you have a solenoid fitted and did you routinely use it? Or did the solenoid fail? Or were you relying on shutting the valve at the cylinder (I know some cruisers do that)? When did you last conduct a pressure test on the system? This would be a horrible thing for anyone else to go through (especially at sea).
Wow glad you're ok! Consider replacing the propane stove with an Origo non pressurized alcohol stove . No need for piped in propane, eliminating the possibility of explosion. Take care.
I am so sorry this happened. However, I am so happy that you were on deck and, mostly, ok. It sounded like there was little fire as a result and you were able to extinguish what there was quick. You really are an inspiration. While looking around you noticed that they wiring was now exposed and you would be able to neaten it up. Talk about finding something good in everything!
Wow. Glad you've still got your eyebrows magnus! We had a house blow up here in Christchurch last year that was literally reduced to matchsticks. I was about 2km away and had the air sucked from my lungs. The force of it destroyed the surrounding five houses, incredible force. All the best on the rebuild guys, at least you can do things they way you want them now..
Magnus, wow so sorry to hear of the accident and so thankful for your safety. It is so shocking to see the damage. Propane can be such a issue. After watching your videos I have much confidence in your skills to bring the old girl around. Heart wrenching to see your work in the galley damaged. Do take care
That's terrible news, glad nobody was badly hurt. I have no idea how you can deal so calmly with something like that, you are much more level headed than me, I'd have been running round like a headless chicken for a couple of weeks after that ! I cannot imagine how much work you need to do to fix up old Nutshell but if anyone can, Magnus can !
Magnus what can anyone say other than your ok that’s the main thing and lucky Wendy was at work sorry to hear of this and my best wishes go to you both as we all know you will get through it all the best to you both and really hope everything is now on you side to get back to open waters again. U.K.
Did see on FB was it? Wowzers your lucky M only 8 life’s left now! Glad no injuries or anything major. She’ll be back right in no time given your skills. Well actually did I see on FB you had it about done and we’re planning the next trip? Take care cheers Ade
God damn.....so glad u were outside and got away without any injuries. I hope the damages looks worse than it is and u manage to restore it asap. Sorry to hear this!
Bloody hell,,, that's absolutely crazy ! I'm just happy to hear your ok mate ! Gas & boats shouldn't be in the same sentence ! I guess the only consolation is a series of re-fit videos, wishing you both all the best 🙏
All you can do is quite literally thank God that you are still alive... I can't imagine how you feel.. I wish you both so much luck in getting your boat rebuilt.. Please stay safe both of you...🍷🍷
OHHH WOW!!! No sniffer linked to gas shut off I am guessing. What a shame Magnus, but it is only damaged woodwork mate, You still have your life. At least its a start on remodeling the boat..ALWAYS LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE. Cheers Brad
Talk about lucky. So pleased that neither of you were down below when that went off. Doesn't bear thinking about. Take a look at Yachting Monthly Crash Test Boat,Gas, just shocking what it can do. I asked the gas certification bloke what sort of stove he had on his Grand Banks. "Electric", he replied. He's a gas fitter and won't have gas on his boat.
Glad you are OK. As to how to prevent something like this happening to anyone else's boat. Would a positive bilge ventilator work? In other words, duct from the bilge space at the lowest point up to mechanical exhaust fan. Gas always sinks to the lowest level and if you could remove any gas accumulation from the lowest point then no explosion. Of course you would then have no gas in your gas bottle but that's heaps cheaper then a rebuild.
So very glad you came out mostly unscathed. As others have said, it's a blessing it didn't happen in mid-Pacific! Take care Magnus. All the best to you and Wendy with the re-build.
I have watched every one of your vids and learnt so much from you guys whilst my boat was being built, now on the U.K. canals, that was shocking and I can admit emotional. But!
So lucky ,I meet a guy on sunny coast his launch went up with him on board .burns were horrific .gas man have to be Preda tick with it .
glad to hear you are safe and relatively un-hurt. also glad that Nutshell isn't at the btm of the bay, there is hope for her :-)
good luck.
It’s amazing you were not hurt!!! I’m so glad you are ok!!!
Guys really gutted for you, at least you are ok good luck on the rebuild. If you need anything from the UK let me know.
Oh my goodness, you are both in our prayers stay safe and well. Take care, cheers from Canada R&D
So sorry this happened. But your ok that's the main thing. All the best mate.
OMG just came across your video so glad your ok mate and haven't suffered hearing loss. Assuming you were able to get it repaired
Hi. We are still making repairs… bit by bit. It’s a jigsaw puzzle which is slowly being pieced back together. Magnus is well. Thank you. W.
Take care cheers
Ade
Hi Ade
We haven’t really started the rebuild we have just put everything back where it belongs but we wanted to go for a sail so we did.
I'm so sorry to see the devastation to your boat, and really glad nobody was too badly injured. All the best Rupert.
God damn.....so glad u were outside and got away without any injuries. I hope the damages looks worse than it is and u manage to restore it asap. Sorry to hear this!
So glad you are ok - you were so lucky. Sending much love to you both x
Bloody hell,,, that's absolutely crazy ! I'm just happy to hear your ok mate ! Gas & boats shouldn't be in the same sentence !
I guess the only consolation is a series of re-fit videos,
wishing you both all the best 🙏
All you can do is quite literally thank God that you are still alive... I can't imagine how you feel.. I wish you both so much luck in getting your boat rebuilt.. Please stay safe both of you...🍷🍷
HOLY COW MAGNUS GLAD TO HEAR EVERYONE'S OK! BEST WISHES AND MY YOUR REPAIRS BE TROUBLE FREE
Love to you both xxxxxx thinking of you both xxxx
Glad you are OK. As to how to prevent something like this happening to anyone else's boat. Would a positive bilge ventilator work? In other words, duct from the bilge space at the lowest point up to mechanical exhaust fan. Gas always sinks to the lowest level and if you could remove any gas accumulation from the lowest point then no explosion. Of course you would then have no gas in your gas bottle but that's heaps cheaper then a rebuild.
Oh my I'm so grateful you are alright Magnus! And that you and Wendy will be able to fix your boat. Bless your hearts I so love your channel!
So very glad you came out mostly unscathed. As others have said, it's a blessing it didn't happen in mid-Pacific! Take care Magnus. All the best to you and Wendy with the re-build.
Poor Nutshell😪 so glad you're ok and in one piece! On the bright side, looking forward to the refit videos. Take care, both of you.
Your guardian angel watched over you Magnus. Glad to hear you are ok and the boat is repairable
I wont have gas on my boat
3 years ago I got rid of the lovely 3 burner top and oven for $500 and installed Dometic alcohol burners
I have watched every one of your vids and learnt so much from you guys whilst my boat was being built, now on the U.K. canals, that was shocking and I can admit emotional. But! Thank goodness your alive ....and that you have skills in abundance... look forward to the rebuild, best wishes to you both
So glad your ok. It will be better than new when you and Wendy finish her !
