what do you suggest for 50' of led lighting to light up stair path...I just need to run it down the side. I want them bright. Im not to worried about diffusion just brightness and having it powered at only one end. I want rgb so I can change colors. programming it to do crazy stuff is not a requirement.

That looks incredible! Nice job! My most recent set of light strips, I went DIY, and yeah... my soldering still sucks. I felt like I needed the bigger gauge wire to cross a gap, but then I had a hell of a time soldering them to the strips. Even these crimp connectors I got to make it easier, still caused a lot of headaches.

DIY with 5-volt addressable strips gives you higher resolution (and can power the esp32 right from it). It can will require power injection for longer runs, but if you aren't afraid of a little soldering, you can get really nice results.

Definitely want teh COB variant for what I'm planning to install, not a big fan of seeing LED's. DIY kind of speaks more to me, just getting a handle on the whole thing and problemsolving seems like fun. The biggest challenge so far, as you also say in the video, is just figuring out what the heck to buy. There's so much out there and it's not clear at all. Wiring DC stuff is a doddle, soldering is easy, but finding the right components to buy so it all works, that's tough. Especially since I'm also only now getting into the home automation bit for real, took one of my existing Raspberry PI's and slapped a Z-wave transceiver on it, but now I have to wrap my head around Z-wave, Zigbee and all that stuff as well. Still... it should be fun.

Hi Reed, great video. Do you happen to know if you can cut the FCOB dreamcolor strips you used and then make use of the remaining, or is that fit for the bin once it's been cut?
I'd really like to try and make some use of these strips if i can but the use case i would like to put them too would mean several shorter strips, i'd like to save by buying a larger roll but that's of no use to me if i cn't use the remaining strip once i've cut it. Thanks in advance

  • @kenrodriguez9645
    @kenrodriguez9645 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I find that if you just want color and not really sure or don’t really care on the where and specifics, Govee is fine.
If you have very specific requirements (needs to be primary lighting for the room), LEDs need to be individually addressable because of a certain effect you want, need to be able to control total brightness (may need power injection), want strips to specifically be on these edges and these under cabinet and these vaulted ceiling trims, extensions tend to be much easier with DIY, then DIY is the way to go.
Sometimes you want a corner trim to connect to an edge trim, to connect to an upfiring trim, to a non-diffused downfiring trim and you want them all to go sequentially. Go DIY. There’s no kit solution for that.
It’s work going DIY, no doubt about it. And most of the work is research. I think once you get all the right components and tools, install is pretty straightforward.

The decision for many is direct controllability. For example, none of the pre-packaged strips can be controlled by DMX. For a “set-n-forget” rig, then, yeah, prepackaged is the way to go. For my designs I need direct control to work with the rest of my lighting system. That part was kind of unsettling. DIY implies an interest in learning new skills and understanding of new things, like electronics or woodworking, or whatever, so it doesn’t require being an electrical engineer, but it does require an interest in learning something new, so that complaint is invalid.

Great video! I'm looking to shine color from my ceiling onto a wall painted flat black. I don't want to see the LED diodes so I'm wondering if there are LEDs that point or are cut at an angle. In other words, if I'm looking at that wall I just want to see the effect of the light, not the LED diodes. Similar to those under your bed, cabinet, etc. I'm wondering if i need to install a small piece of wood across the ceiling to physically hide the LED strip. Thoughts?

There is a huge problem with GOVEE... they do NOT SELL separate controllers.. I bought the 65' version.. and it comes with 2, 33' rolls.. well if you want to put them in different rooms.. you are out of luck or even if you want to put them end to end.. NOPE not going to happen you have to be within the distance of the dual cables coming out of the controller box.. so NOT GOOD for that.. just Saiyan make sure you get as close to the size run that you need.. or you will be wasting money .. I love the DIY with individual adjustable leds.. and then just get a separate controller.. they have some that are super easy to use and are universal ..

@@phillips_9150 correct. Just cut off the Govee controller and add a diguno or similar controller. Worked great.

I see a bunch on thingyverse, but none that have the same mounting holes on the pin side shown at 1:15.

Welcome to WLED! I’ve been looking for a 60 led/meter individually addressable strip that has each LED as being brighter than the ws2812b strips, anyone know of something? Meaning if it had one single led on full brightness, it would be brighter than a ws2812B on with a single pixel on full brightness.

Did you know that Govee introduced a preset feature that can be activated with google assistant? It has always worked with alexa by the way....

I need a led strip that can go a long way on 1 or 2 power sources for Crown Molding. All the LEDs I see are outrageously priced, or they don't have full color and full whites for a responsible price

The DIY RGBWW light strips I have in the description should fit what you are looking for. Make sure to get 24v so you will have less resistance and lower voltage drop with a long length.

How Long of a run can I do on one 24v? I think I need around 300 linear ft to run.

Sorry but I didn't like the WIZ mainly for the dark zones in them.. to large of gaps between the LEDs
