  • While a lot of the blame has come to the door of the producer and rightly so, we must also look at the actions of the individuals involved in this tragic incident
Queen Blessing Ebigieson, President, Association of Movie Producers
As President of AGN, I have the right to ban my members from shooting in a riverine project upon which our members died. We have set up a committee to uncover the details that led to the unfortunate death of Junior Pope and some other members

It's Nigeria, most people feel too big to be safety conscious. It's a very sad turn of event. However, we all understand how people can be obdurate to little authority especially one that concerns their safety. I've used boats several times on the Atlantic and pacific oceans, where it is mandatory to use a life vest regardless of your swimming prowess. The life jackets are usually old and sometimes dirty from frequent use. That doesn't stop the life vest from being effective. If he or some other person(s) refuse to wear one, the boat captain shouldn't have moved.

@@ppassman7439 how sure are you that he refused to wear, if you've seen the video he made on the previous day before the incident, he wasn't wearing one either and he was begging the boat driver to slow down and you want to tell me that he refused to wear it too .....when he had experienced fear and anxiety the previous day....come on man.

I remember the time there was a mandate that all okada passengers should wear helmets when riding Okada and all okada riders were mandated to procure extra helmets for their passengers? People rejected the move as the crash helmets were said to be filthy. Some girls would place a handkerchief over their hair before wearing the helmets. It was subsequently disregarded, and today, Nigerians don't wear any helmets on okada.
These safety measures need to be enforced by both the people and the relevant agencies involved.

I love Rufai but he should slow down!... In same Ayo's analogy, that plane will not move because the captain would have made that decision. Who was in charge of that boat and why did the person not insist he wore the jacket? Do they not also have an association for boat riders that mandates compliance? Did she lie about the influence of the big stars when they might not take orders? Queen is only being realistic and addressing a COLLECTIVE systemic failure on all sides. The only thing you can really pin on her is the minimal display of empathy on the situation but let us stop being too emotional over issues in Nigeria.smh

As we lambast the producer for negligence could we pressure the government to have emergency services all over the country, there are paramedics, there are ambulance crew, fire fighters, CPR awareness, all the senseless deaths in Nigeria can be avoided if governments are held accountable, the main priorities of government is the health and safety of all citizens, SUE government for failure and negligence, those in power and incompetent should be removed, Nigerians need to stop accepting mediocre to rule, things will remain the same if there is no accountability.

Why must we always wait for something to happen before we start running around to talk about what could have been done? We do things from back to front. What about best practice procedures? Did the company engage in risk assessment procedures to identify what the imminent risks could be before engaging in the project? We like to cut corners, we take things for granted. If the victim refuse to wear a dirty life jacket, he has the right to live in clean and healthy environment. Where in Nigeria today do we see hygiene. We Nigerians have lost every sense of integrity? What do we have to teach our younger generation. I am sick with all these nonsense??? Loosing lives when there should be no need for it. Unless we go back to the very beginning to get things right we will get to nowhere? This incident is a small aspect of the confusion in the bigger System which is Nigeria- a country in disarray. Stop using a fire brigade approach, learn to do things right.

The film industry should be able to sue the boat company. Yes. It is the responsibility of the boat company to ensure that safety is adhered on the boat while riding. Going to shoot anywhere is not the issue. There is always a risk in everything. This issue can happen in any area of service. While the industry should be regulated, the entire population needs at least a minimal level of quality education. I still can’t understand how a drowned person is taken to babalawo first. Nobody could perform CPR. The boat company should be sued for starters. Did the driver of the boat make it?

They should not come on Tv and lie to Nigerians and the world where 5 people already lost their lives. It’s better to say the truth than to tell lies ooooo. They embarked on that journey few days before the last trip that took 5 lives. So why is it that you guys refused to teach them CPR before now.
Eye witnesses also said even the producer herself also went through the same boat a day before the accident without life jacket. Don’t tell Nigerians lies ooo because that may worsen this situation. They have no divers at hand , no life jacket and no emergency cpr kit

The issue of power in relation to Safety issues, is not proregative of any leadership links of the Guild. Safety law of the County as pertain to framework of any Industrial wings.
The Guilds should align with National Safety laws, including road safety, marine safety and other related industry practices.
The failure started from the scope of Safety across Industries in Nigeria.
Marine Safety required that that boat would not have moved until pfds were donned by all the crew on that boat. Who would have enforced?
    1. Starts from the existing safety regulation
2.Indivudual awareness through trainings, awareness, tips, toolbox talks, all based on compliance to National Safety.
    3. The Jetty authority, complying with National Safety requirements.
    4. Film management, have responsibilities to comply with National Safety.. Duty of care

Rufai will always ask that tough question kudos to you,I think the ministry of culture and tourism should call all this associations and give them guild lines, and let them no that anyone who derails from it will be penalized/punished especially been a producer is capital intensive and as such before someone is called a producer there should be criteria especially financially so you don't go and compromise safety and other things because you don't have enough money

When I listened to this lady and the gentleman, it appears there are no cohesion between the two organisations that they both represent. Yet, the two organisations that they represent are in the same industry.
What baffles me most, is the confession of the Chair person representing the film producers 🎥; who admitted her organisation have no risk assessment policy, no health and safety policy and, no regulations in place. This lady should understand it is mandatory for any organisation that, engages the services of the likes of; actors, film crews, directors, and film producers, should have risk assessment policy, health and safety policy and, regulations in place.
It was the absent of these policies, that resulted the untimely demise of these innocent people. Somebody has to be punished, for this ugly incident so that it will not happen again.

This woman called blessing. Why are you incentive? No life insurance. Why would your movie producer allow the boat to move without a life jacket, so out of 12 crew, so only 2 accepted a life jacket ? You're after Emeke Rillas putting a hold on this quacks. Kudos to oseni, Looking forward to seeing you Blessing in court

I am not a fan of cutting off guests when they talk but one thing I have learnt is that when people go off point you have to reign them in to get to the hear of the matter. People might not like rufai for this but sadly in Nigeria that’s how you get to the bottom of the matter sadly in Nigeria

CPR Should be included as part of the training for all 'Actors and Actresses' if they must continue to perform. They should also provide safety jacket to meet up to international standard. Queen Blessing is just being on the defensive, the big producers she mentioned were not made by her association. In all honesty Queen Blessing, your association is a failed association if after existing for 27 years you have no measures put in place in a situation like this.

If the Producer owns the film he or She get insurance to protect the cast and crew members in the event that someone accidentally does damage to the location or any rented film equipment, Injury or death.
If the producer is working under a production company, the production company will be responsible for everything. Guildes and union Who cares about them, they are not in the production list. People can work with them, or they can also work around them, but never worry about them.

AGN and AMP are not professional safety professionals. The proper thing to do is to consult with Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals (NISP) to advice them on Safety Standards to implement. National Film and Video Censored Board (NFVCB) should coordinate these things.

*SECURITY REASONS AND LESSONS WERE FAR FETCHED*
My mega worries anchored that we are best in medicine after death....
Moreso, non-proactiveness has been our second nature...
Even if we have some precaution measures written down and legitimately constituted, what about the enforcement and implementation ....
SYSTEMS in Nigeria are basically corrupt and totally kwashiorkored....
Rebranding the whole governing systems and sectors, without being emotionally or sentimentally attached to any element or phenomenon, can go a long way to sanitize this uncultured nation...
All connectors should be blamed because of zero fact- check intelligence measures and inadequate checks and balances before actions....
Life security intelligence and it's carelessness should be monitored properly for better futuristic safety strategies.....
