Outdoor voluntary simplicity & survivalism in Santa Fe hills

  • Since a “forced retirement” three years ago, Tomas Robison has been stretching his savings by exchanging labor for rent on an off-grid homestead in the Santa Fe mountains. Applying the lessons learned from 3 decades of intense camping (as a climber and river guide), Robison created his home from a yurt, outdoor camp kitchen, hand-crafted composting toilet (The Dood-R), and a “summer shower” from an old parachute.
Calling it “voluntary homelessness”, Robison believes his camp can be reproduced by others facing unemployment or eviction or simply looking to replicate his no-income, low-income lifestyle. It’s not always a comfortable setup: in winter, Robison takes cold baths and makes regular trips up the hill to fill containers with water from the properties’ only well. Having sold most of his power tools, Robison calls his new focus “paleo modern”: he relies mostly on hand tools for chopping wood and creating furniture, though he has kept some modern tools like an electric chainsaw for the bigger jobs.
For Carol - the property owner-, the location is a sanctuary where she has fled a job in international development work focused on poverty and the environment. Frustrated by a sense of powerlessness, she has chosen to apply the bigger principles of land stewardship and simple living to her own life. To the property, she has transported a traditional Ifugao hut (built by another resident of the homestead, Mamerto Tingdongan). She and Tomas have started work on a Cal-Earth SuperAdobe structure, but are currently looking for more help to finish.
Despite the difficulty of the harsh New Mexican winters, Robison enjoys the challenge and works to cultivate what he believes is the necessary mindset to find fulfillment in the solitude and his daily tasks.
“Solitude is independence. It had been my wish and with the years I had attained it. It was cold. Oh, cold enough! But it was also still, wonderfully still and vast like the cold stillness of space in which the stars revolve.” - Herman Hesse, Steppenwolf

Hi, this is Tomas, the guy in the video. Thank you all people for the positive comments. I know I live different and is confusing, but through Kirsten' and Nico's and my video lenses hopefully it will inspire many people to try extended camping on their own. Even if you don't end up living this, just having the experience will give you confidence when the time comes and you have to bear down and go through a challenging time, that at least the standard day to day living aspect of that would not be as stressful and fearful for you and your family. After a few months of living like a camper you could go back to the comforts in life. In my view and experiences, shtf happens and the guns come out and people start getting panic angry, then that is where your resolve as a human comes into play.
I'm happy to answer questions as time permits. I have my daily chores to do too. Peace.

Hi Tomas. Why do you think it's confusing for some people? I live here in New
Mexico too, and we have a long history of non-traditional living, from communes in the 60's all the way back to Native Americans. It really is a traditional way of life.
Nobody considers you homeless, particularly the people who watch this channel. One of my thoughts was you seem to have a few homes on that property.
Also know winters there, and I would wimp out and head back to suburbia, or build a structure off grid with more heating, and AC, and high speed internet, and plumbed in espresso machine. Just kidding, but yeah, your way of life is going to become increasingly popular and it's nice you are educating others about it.
Anger and guns comment, I live in Albuquerque now, and THAT is becoming a way of life here. Time for people to maybe spread out a bit, even for the short term like you mentioned.

@@marejensen8294 well to me, it was more like he appeared ashamed of his life in a way, that he never had a good paying job and that things fell apart after his crisis, where he left the "normal" 9-5 world so to speak. So he ended up there with more like camping outdoor life, where it can seem isolated if you come from the city or suburbs. Maybe he saw the house more like a big shed, who knows. I wish him well and hope he is not too hard on himself, he is no failure at all in my book. He show how to live a simple sustainable life, it can be done.

What Nico said at 36:07 . . . that's a lot of us. The more you reconnect with the oneness of consciousness the harder it is to be here. Once you really see the suffering and realize that most of it is for power and profit, it's overwhelming because there's nothing that you can do to stop it. I've spent the last 15 years shedding the calcification that accumulated from grid living. I moved into an rv and have lived in an orchard since 2016. I'm not to this extreme but it's my next move. I'm happier than I have ever been. The world is still in confusion and chaos but I find peace in living simply and solace in the knowledge that everything that lives in this orchard sees me coming as a friend and helper. Here, I make a difference and that's something. Thank you for the video.

As a Christian I want to be law abiding but the law of the "thought police" is one that should be examined carefully. Jk but paying the man to the degree we do is something we just accept, because it is our norm at the moment, there is a growing number of people (like this man) wanting to take some freedom back into their hands a bit (me as well). Good point: practice living off grid because it may seem romantic but we have to change mindsets to make it work. Abandoned homes and projects shows it’s not for everyone. She says we not extolling poverty, but showing that we can survive less with technology, and more with nature. They are wealthy, they own their time. I love your videos because they show lifestyle choices and make me think about mine.

The lady explains the land was given to her - she applied for an ad on Craig’s list - and the gentleman shares it with her. Sounds like they invite people who want to live off grid but they end up abandoning their projects before completion. The whole video looks like a series of projects to be completed or abandoned but it does make you wonder about life off the grid. It’s hard work and you need a completer-finisher mentality to make it work.

Thirty years ago I worked Gallup, NM there were a lot of homeless folks staying in campers and old buses and vans up on the Natl Forest land. We worked with a bunch of them who live with mental illnesses and substance abuse. Some were quite content, and others struggled a great deal. NOT saying you are in this group, just that lots of folks have been doing this for years without a lot of attention. Peace & All Good.

In my opinion, It's okay to acknowledge that some people may be facing more difficulties than others, and it's the way people are able to face restraints that will make a difference for them long term. This video can teach some things about attitude, and will also be appreciated for those who need this type of solace from somebody that doesn't do it just for the fun of it. We know a lot of people that need help and/or counseling and it's important to make sure all of us are on the conversation. No person left behind, especially because of economic constraints. Attitude is a choice.
