Tiny houses' polymath: tinker, lyricist, carpenter, cartoonist

  • Derek Diedricksen has loved tiny homes since he read Lester Walker’s “Tiny Tiny Houses” as a ten year old. It was the same year he built his first “non-fort tiny house” (complete with insulation, electricity, bunk beds), mowing lawns to raise the money for the two-by-fours. [ His book "Microshelters": www.amazon.com/Microshelters-C... ]
Nearly three decades later and he’s still building and has turned his childhood passion into a career. He runs one of the original tiny house blogs (relaxshacks.com), has authored a graphic novel/ DIY instruction manual "Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts", hosts tiny house building workshops (his next is Nov 22-23 in Carolina Beach, NC), builds tiny shelters/treehouses for clients and even raps about the genre (e.g. in his music video Lollipop Fort of Death).

❣Half way into this I realized his way of building is how birds build their nests and how beavers build their houses...and this makes me smile and feel warm all over. ❣ Thank you for another wonderful episode, Kirsten. 💕

Kirsten, I 've been watching many of your videos lately, and have been following your channel for a few years now. The thing that stands out is that homeowners are shown as personalities, it's not just about the house, or its design. This documentary-style video you make for us is truly to be appreciated. They aren't fast, bright or filled with music, which gives us the chance to really soak in the details and atmosphere. I enjoy your work and what you bring to this world. Thank you from your viewer in Latvia!

I hope Deek reads still here. I find it so wonderful that whole video, and in all of his own videos, his eyes are positively smiling. I could see how his wife would get a little annoyed with having him a million projects on the go, but that's life with a creative mind! And really, his personality is so endearing, how could you not love the guy! I also loved how he encourages his kids to build their own projects... no "bubble wrapped kids" there! Have you ever considered teaching kids? I bet you'd be really encouraging of their creative visions. Keep going, Deek! I wish I had your brain!

Derek DEEKS ~ I am saving this to show my Grandson JonJon. He is nine years old. A few years ago he literally built a shack' from pallets, furnished it. It has been torn down now, but I would like him to see that he is talented and that he can continue to be creative this way. [I, too, am a secret architect geek - still creative but past my prime]. I have been trolling the internet and xfinity for a few years now, for tiny living spaces ideas. Your work is genius.

25:47 - The tiny house "movement" is definitely not a fad nor recent. In fact, humans have lived in tiny houses for damn near the entire history of humanity. Big houses will eventually be viewed as temporary, short-lived shelters.

Yes. Even in France, where they prefer traditional stuff and are stubborn, they really favor small domiciles. Easier to manage, heat, maintain, pay taxes on, et c. A large family in a one-room stone cottage is the norm. Six or more people. Apartments as small as possible.

I thought this was a very informative video. I hope to bring at least one useful item for life away from each video I watch, and in this one I took away several. Funny enough, some of the most useful info was about hand tools-precisely what he was asked to speak about at MIT!!! For example, I did not know taking a nail out sideways was easier-I am going to have to try that!!! I just read some criticism from another You Tuber about the construction having gaps. Umm..what??? These are frickin' tree house type structures-not meant for permanent and winter dwelling. I think what was on display was Derek's amazing creativity. I would bet that 99% of us, given the same exact piles of recycled materials-would never be able to come up these creative designs-they were fantastic! I am not into "modern design", but I lived the creativity and vision shown in this video!

Dave S, you are right to a degree. A lot of the reasons is their mental and physical health as well. Some just fall on hard times, others can't find work due to their conditions(mental or drug addictions) and some don't try. Regardless, its a nice idea at least to give them a warm place to stay instead of the streets. You are right in the long term there is many many more difficult problems to address to help them first. Maybe expand rehab and mental facilities? Who knows.

    • @brokenrecord3523
      @brokenrecord3523 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You're right, Chris. Thanks for adding details. About 1/3 of homeless families would be helped by free or affordable housing, but tiny houses would be an uncomfortable solution. For individuals that are homeless, providing a tiny house would help an even smaller percentage ~20-25% People like tangible solutions: sending clothing to hurricane victims or little houses for the homeless. What they need is money and a strong strategic plan to use that money effectively. Want to help? Pass legislation or pony up.
Rixanne, that's how you have a debate. It's so easy just to resort to name-calling, but not very useful.

That was really cool! Thanks for sharing! This reminds me of the creativity that my friends and I had when we were kids. It's cool to see someone who has made it their life's work.

Ha! Ha! Love the Lollipop Fort of Death video. I love all of the designs. I purchased the plans to the transforming A frame but haven't started it yet.

I am so happy for him, that he found a way to support himself of off something he loves to do. That is a true gift in life, that few of us realize. Inspiring guy!

Just awesome! I used to build little get away shacks in the woods (in North West Ga) when I was a kid with whatever I could find as well. My old man was a dumpster diver from way back and one of the best carpenters you could ask for. He rarely used power tools and later in life he lived his dream of building and living a tiny cabin 20 miles into the mountainous woods about 10' x 14' all made by hand from the land with no power tools and no help at all. Most of my tree houses or forts were were so far in the woods no one knew they were there which was an awesome get away for me to be with nature. Sadly those woods are gone and now a failed subdivision attempt is all that remains of my childhood beloved woods. My parents are long gone and I have been living another dream of being a licensed master captain, living aboard, sailing, motoring and exploring South Fla by water for 10 years now. I think it's time to build another tiny home for the woods again!
    Thanks! Capt Jeff

    Thank you³:
I'm grateful for TH-cam, Kirsten & Derek for showing me this.
Without them (and the tech of this era) i'd never had known what ingenious things Derek has done.
A lot of it is electrical - but for most of the mechanical out of the box ideas, i can figure out analog control methods (i.e. bimetallic switches, light diodes).

This guy is amazing! I love his designs, and the “found” materials ethic is beyond just the frugal benefit - such an artistic visionary 🤍
