Got to the Rockies, settled to build rugged Mountain tiny homes

- Greg Parham moved to Durango, Colorado for the mountain biking and built his first tiny house to afford rent. Almost a decade later, he - and his company Rocky Mountain Tiny Houses - has built 80 custom tiny homes for customers across the country.
He lived for 5 years in his first build and one year of that with his wife Stefanie while they were building a bigger and better model. Today, they live off-grid - and onsite at the company - in their San Juan tiny house.
They customized everything to their particular needs, from a mechanical elevator bed to a tabletop that slides (with wax) into multiple positions. Not wanting a simple square box, they built designed SIPS-panel walls that arch up and out and an undulating roof that maximizes space where needed.
When we visited the worksite, Parham had three tiny houses in production and he said he was booked out for the next nine months. Despite his popularity, Parham doesn’t want to get too big, as he likes being able to tailor the homes to the individual client. He allows every customer to completely customize their home and allows them to interact with the build process via video call to make changes along the way.

I see a wonderful pattern. Kirsten "gets" what people have done, and gets excited about it, and this gets them talking and sharing "from where they live". They feel validated, become relaxed, and it like they are talking to a friend. And actually they are talking to a friend. "When she connects the dots, and understands something, she usually starts with a "Wow,....." They laugh and feel relaxed and explain themselves and their thinking, and it is really fun for everyone. These videos are really quite wonderful. The houses are wonderful, but the thinking behind them are just as wonderful. You guys do a great job, and you have so much fun doing it. There is life in it. Thank you.
Yeah ..but sometimes we don't need to know so much either ...just me ...
When I first started watching them, years ago, I was fascinated by how they really did take in all angles literally and figuratively, and found people and places that were so much different from the "norm". There is a lot of videos out there about different types of living but most of them don't take in the whole place AND people behind the idea. It's a unique view and one I really enjoy.

Ferdinand Yet the whole work area could go up in flames with one spark in all the sawdust on the workshop floor. It’s great to be busy and in demand, but good house keeping is so important when the “dust bunnies” could end your future.

I say the same thing every time Kirsten...best episode ever. Always look forward to your work mainly because I love that you focus on "alternative" architecture (which I admittedly wish was the norm). There are so many people with creative ways to solve problems...what a unique solution to the island in the kitchen, this totally loose countertop of theirs. I have been a life long woodworker/architect and have never seen anyone try that before. Just gives me inspiration for all sorts of things floating around in my head.
I agree I love how they tackled each item - the bed, the table, the roof- as if there were no prescribed norms and they simply figured out how to make things work in their own way.

The snow shot of this tiny was amazing, kinda made me miss my days in Evergreen, Colo....retired now in Florida, in the warmth and sunshine I can recall those days of my rugged youth and the carpenter boyfriend I had back then... boy if I could turn back the time, we lived tiny for sure in our summer cabin in the 60's...who knew...LOVE these builders...!

Really enjoyed this one. He wants to keep his builds to a minimum is refreshing in a society that wants you to believe the American Dream is to be as financially successful as you can be. Well we see how that works out in our society.

One of my favourite towns in the US. I was travelling through there 30yrs ago and had the opportunity to stay for 6 weeks in a rustic A-frame cabin on the outskirts of town. Very interesting folks from all over the States, very open-minded. Can imagine tiny homes being very popular there. Great episode Kirsten and hubby.

I wonder if Greg knows how much of a math/geometry genius he is and just how truly mind blowing he is? . It was so interesting to see his passion for "figuring it out" and explaining how he did something. Things that a lot of builders wouldn't begin to tackle is like grade school math for him. I am so in awe of his ability with math especially. It would help me so much in my research in history/religious studies. He's a true craftsman. Kudos to him.

All your videos are informative and passionate... but this particular video must be the most extensive video I have ever seen on Tiny Houses! I haven't even finished the video and it made me all excited and inspired! As for the builder(s), I love how they combine practicality, craftmanship, engineering and art all into one in their projects... I feel often it is one or the other... This is great!
The whole set up/layout is fantastic, it has all the necessities without bulking up the home but my favourite is the bed concept 💡 👍👍👍

I love the sliding multi-purpose countertop and the bath with full tub and the roof loft area.
I have lived in my fifth wheel and traveled the western united stated for ten years now. I have seen more and more tiny homes in rv parks and have enjoyed watching others embrace this movement. The tiny home featured in this video is my favorite of all time. I love the unique design and the use of so many repurposed materials. I still prefer my manufactured fifth wheel, it has so much storage built in and I am almost constantly on the road, but if I were ever to stay in one place for a while, this would be a cool alternative.
