Sagarika Ghose, the journalist-turned-politician, recently made headlines for joining the Trinamool Congress, and became a Rajya Sabha member. Has she abandoned the journalism front? How does she look at Hindutva? What made her pull out of mainstream media?
In this candid conversation with Sudipto Mondal for What’s your ism? - a podcast by The News Minute and Newslaundry - Ghose talks about the BJP, media, Hindutva ideology, liberalism and intellectuals in Indian politics.
On joining the opposition at a time it has “no hope in hell”, Ghose says there is “no space left for the kind of writing I want to do”, and the “danger” to constitutional values is “far beyond” what she could do as a journalist.
She says the mainstream media has been “captured by the Modi government” and has become a purveyor of hatred, bigotry, and “trumpeter of the regime”. “The mainstream media runs counter to what journalism should be”.
Ghose further speaks about why Hindutva is anti-constitutional, the “glass club” of men in newsrooms, diversity in media, significance of opposition in a democracy, and why intellectuals don’t make good politicians.

Not oppose but to question. The spirit of inquiry should be there. So, it's not at all anti-national to question the government regarding the Balakot airstrikes.

Electoral bond is legalised corruption, whether it is bjp or any other party. But the main culprit is BJP who introduced the bill without proper discussion which opened the door to loot India
This is not a political interview but an intellectual one.
Why is it so difficult for Savarna(Oppressor Caste individual) even if she/he is an intellectual to accept the privilege comes from caste? Ghose could have simply accepted it but she took a lot of time and in the end of the answer she simply insisted she was self made and meritorious like any other Savarna.
Observing and analysing this behaviour of most of the Savarnas,
Why can't we infer that the education cannot eradicate the inherent caste identity?
And why can't we infer that Opposition is also a B-team of Hindutva ideology of Varnashrama Religion?
Opposition should fight with and for the Bahujans, and if they are not fighting why should they exist? Bahujans would definitely choose the A-team rather than B-team, atleast then they know what they are going for.
I mean, that's why there is reservation to oppressed and backward classes. Why do you want her to feel guilty for just being born into a community. Will you accept when people call successful lower caste individuals as a product of reservation? I won't. And it goes both ways. So, everyone has the right to claim themselves as self-made unless they have committed some illegal stuff to get where they are.
@@JJ-hp6mb it is not about feeling guilty, it is about having a conscience and acknowledging that caste based atrocities are still part of Indian society in 21st century and wealth distribution between oppressor caste and bahujans is still an alarming issue. This indicates that we are not doing enough to eradicate the caste system.
And what's the issue with the affirmative action? Why do you invoke it everywhere when the discussion is not around it? Still I would respond to it, in my honest opinion giving 1% jobs to 85% population is way too far to call it a step towards social justice. You can point out if I am wrong with the figure of 1%.
Lastly would you deny the fact that these oppressor caste individuals enjoyed 100% reservation from the past 1000 years?
And it is still a reality in India, aren't the priests of most temples coming from the Brahmin caste, the landlords from kshatriya caste and business heads from Vaishya?
Issue is that the problem of caste is still prevalent and Savarnas are acting innocent and when asked questions they would simply go to the topic of reservation even if it is not invoked in the question. When in reality Savarnas were and are the biggest beneficiary of reservation coming from Varnashrama Religion.

YES, a doctor by degree - that’s the definition. Not sure which medieval school you went to but that’s how modern disciplines are defined. Someone who practices “medicine” but doesn’t have a degree isn’t a doctor, that’s why person who operates the pharmacy isn’t a doctor even though he gives you a medicine.

The reservation excludes Brahmins in areas in which they are under-represented such as education and employment. Brahmins oppose reservation to achieve goals such as bridging inequalities in employment and pay, increasing access to education, and redressing existing injustices, prejudices or obstacles against Brahmins. The reservation purely targets the Brahmins by discouraging them for increased participation. Brahmin drawback is the societal drawback that disadvantages Brahmin people over non-Brahmin people in societies, if they are under the same social, political, or economic circumstances. Current innocent Brahmin people must not bear a collective responsibility for the harm which had resulted from historical casteist treatment of people belonging to other groups. Discrimination against any individual on the basis of their Brahmin origin is unjustified. Reservation is discriminatory, discarded meritocracy and is driven by lower caste vote-bank politics.

Very good interview with ideas flowing to and fro. Sagarika was allowed to air her views for which she thanked immensely. But I thought the last part, her take on "ISMS' could have been more probing. Maybe there was issue with time management.
