Why the West is wrong about Islam | Peter Oborne | The Big Picture S3EP15

  • Why are Western societies so fearful of Islam and Muslims?
One can answer this question by examining history, particularly that of European colonial powers, and the ways in which they justified their actions in the Global South by painting its peoples and religions as alien and in need of reformation.
Another answer can be found in the murky ties between our modern political parties, powerful media figures and well-funded think tanks, who have all benefited from casting Muslim communities as antagonists.
This week on The Big Picture podcast, we speak to celebrated author and columnist Peter Oborne, who has spent years tracing the roots of anti-Muslim hatred in Western history, and the people who shape its modern manifestations in Britain, the US and France.
He presents his findings in his 2023 book ‘The Fate of Abraham: Why The West Is Wrong About Islam’.

I started to admire Peter Oborne when he resigned his job at the Telegraph on a point of principle.
He found out that the Telegraph wouldn't dare to report about the wrong doings of a bank, I don't remember whether it was the Barclays or HSBC, because they used to take a large advertisement spaces from the paper.

A lot of these companies, especially the pharmaceutical industry runs ads in papers, TV and digital media not for sales of their products but as leverage on the media itself.
If the platform tries to print something they don’t like, they threaten pulling their ads.

NO 10 COMMANDMENTS IN QURAN, MUHAMMAD COULD NOT COPY IT, AND PUT IT IN QURAN, CAUSE HE KNOWS HE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OBEY IT, RULE NUMBER ONE, SLEEPING WITH A CHILD IS A NO NO, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF IT WAS 1400 YEARS AGO, NO EXCUSE, ANY HUMAN WITH A BRAIN WOULD KNOW IT IS COMMON SENSE YOU DO NOT SLEEP WITH A CHILD , ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE THE AGE OF A GRANDFATHER, AND HAVING MANY WIVES ALREADY..Jesus condemed the violation of children and Muhammad in his old age did exactly that in marrying a 6 year old
Those who dishonor children are the AntiChrist
Muhammad violates the Ten commandments and deliberately does not introduce it in the Quran although Moses appears over 160 times and a whole chapter appears in Quran

How could one be Islamophobic? Islam says I, as an atheist, should be killed. Therefore, I vehemently oppose Islam out of self preservation if nothing else. I think Muslims are following a bad ideology which has doomed them to poor living standards and a very anti-intellectual culture. Is that Islamophobia? Because they are all 100% valid criticisms, and telling me I need to respect people who want me dead, lets just say I won't be amenable to that solution.

@@revpadma - No, it isn't a mystery at all. You realize we in the West are quickly becoming majority atheist, ya? We already had cultures which were completely incompatible, but now there will be an even bigger rift between us. You guys still act like its the 7th century, you practice your religion like Europeans from the Middle Ages practiced Christianity. Then we had the Enlightenment and secularization, and the divide has been growing since. You won't ever catch up until you modernize your culture, but I expect you guys to cling to it even tighter until it is completely undeniable that your religion is keeping you weak compared to everyone else. You guys will have a really hard time giving up a myth which makes Arabs front and center, even saying God told people to only read his words in Arabic, hahaha. You guys just don't have a clue, you are proud of all the wrong things, you think your stubbornness in places like Palestine is a show of strength, but to the rest of the world it perfectly encapsulates why you people will always stay underdeveloped. You are hot heads with little logic going into to your thinking. So, no, it is not a mystery why you are portrayed the way you are. It is because it is the truth. The only people who support in the West you have an ideology which is completely incompatible with yours, they just support you because of a brain dead ideology about oppression and needing to be a white savior to minorities. It is all so comical. The truth is, it is only going to get worse until it gets better, because you guys are nowhere near ready to move on from Islam or at least have a movement equivalent to the Enlightenment.

We should not try to impose our values on them. Though the Muslim world lags behind the West in political development -- only two Muslim nations have democratic governments -- our civilization is not inherently superior to theirs. Several countries have laws or regulations that restrict or penalize conversion from Islam to other religions, including:
    1. Saudi Arabia: Apostasy laws prescribe death penalty for leaving Islam.
    2. Afghanistan: Conversion from Islam is considered apostasy, punishable by death or imprisonment.
    3. Pakistan: Blasphemy laws, while not specifically targeting conversion, can lead to accusations and violence against those leaving Islam.
    4. Somalia: Conversion from Islam is illegal and punishable by death.
    5. Yemen: Apostasy laws prescribe death penalty for leaving Islam.
    6. Brunei: Sharia law, introduced in 2014, prescribes death by stoning for apostasy.
    7. Sudan: Conversion from Islam is punishable by death.
    8. Mauritania: Apostasy laws prescribe death penalty for leaving Islam.
    9. Qatar: Conversion from Islam is illegal and punishable by imprisonment.
    10. United Arab Emirates: Conversion from Islam is illegal and punishable by imprisonment.
    11. Malaysia: While not strictly illegal, conversion from Islam is heavily restricted and can lead to state-sanctioned rehabilitation programs.
    12. Egypt: While not illegal, conversion from Islam can lead to social ostracism, family rejection, and legal challenges.
Please note that laws and regulations can change, and enforcement may vary. Additionally, social and cultural attitudes toward conversion can be just as influential as legal frameworks. This list is not exhaustive, and other countries may have similar laws or restrictions.

I'm halfway through this interview, and it's shocking that neither host nor guest seems to attach any significance to the centuries-old imperialist quest to control West Asia for its natural resources, its cheap labor, and its markets for goods produced by the industrialed nations. Around the world the Europeans, including the US, have promoted justifications for their inhumane colonial behavior by stereotyping and demonizing the indigenous as subhuman. That stereotyping of the exploited is a classic way of oppressor groups to rationalize their inhumane behavior. Control of West Asia has huge geopolitical significance as it permits access to Africa, Eastern Europe, etc, and it yields great resources in oil as Halliburton recognized in the aughts.

The more this attitude persists, the more the very real problems of unchecked immigration and forced multiculturalism on European societies continue to grow.

In his book titled “Islam at the Crossroads” on page 49 published in 1934, Muhammad Asad said that “many of Western civilizations historical experiences are deeply tinged by a strange animosity towards Islam.

To some extent, this also is an inheritance from Europe's antiquity. The Greeks and the Romans regarded only themselves as "civilized", while everything foreign, and particularly everything living to the east of the Mediterranean, bore the label "barbarian". Since that time the Occidentals have believed that their racial superiority over the rest of mankind is a matter of fact, and the more or less pronounced contempt for non-European races and nations is one of the standing features of Western civilization.
This alone, however, is not enough to explain its feeling as regards Islam. Here, and here alone, the Western attitude is not one of mere indifference, as in the case of other "foreign" religions and cultures: it is one of deep-rooted and almost fanatical aversion, and it is not only intellectual but bears an intensely emotional tint. The West may not accept the doctrines of Buddhist or Hindu philosophy, but it will always preserve a balanced, reflective attitude of mind with regard to those systems. As soon, however, as it turns towards Islam, the balance is disturbed and an emotional bias creeps in” (Islam at the Crossroads, p. 49).

The reason for that is quite simple: follow the money. IT is the Middle East, the Muslim countries, that have the oil which creates the energy that the West needs, wants and craves and without that their people would turn against them & as elected leaders, they want to keep the masses happy so they can continue in their cushy job of oppressing everybody.

The Muslims have defeated European military forces more than once, they have raw materials like oil coveted by Christian imperialism, they command a crucial position in terms of geopolitical strategy in their access to Africa, Central and southern Europe, Russian lands, the Indian ocean, the European countries deep down know how reliant their scientific, mathematical, cultural, philosophical, etc., development has been on West Asian achievements, and Islam has successfully competed with Christianity as a faith, outstripping the latter's growth in recent times.

I should have added to the reasons for the tenacity of the bigotry against Islam, Iranians, and Arabs that the anti-semitism against Jews that has either hibernated, percolated, or erupted over centuries in Europe (and hence in its former colonies like the US) has striking parallels with stereotypes of Muslims, Arabs, and Iranians, so that when western imperialist powers want to arouse public support for incursions, financial/economic pressure like sanctions, or other coercive measures to gain control of West Asian lands, they can easily press buttons already in place. Ironically and in stupefying oblivion as to the danger for Jews of keeping such stereotypes alive in the west, since the foundation of Israel Zionists of all faiths (Zionism is a political belief in the right of Jews to form and maintain a nation in the historic Palestinian homeland) have sought to publicize these repellent stereotypes: 1) the rich, ruthless Arab sheik parallels the rich, greedy Jewish banker or merchant, 2) the ubiquitous cartoon depiction of the fat, super-hairy, beady-eyed, giant-nosed Arab or Iranian closely echoes Nazi caricatures of Jews, 3) the Arab oil cartel, and, to some extent, the alleged terrorist networks bent on world domination parallel the cabal referenced in the Protocols of Zion, 4) the oppression of women and access to harems parallel alleged Jewish lust for gentile women, the younger and more virginal the better, 5) aggression towards infidels based in an exclusionary belief in Allah as the one true god parallels Jewish belief in their chosenness for rule and influence by the one true god, and 6) the disposition to cruelty and general savagery parallels the blood libel whereby Jews ceremonially drink the blood of gentile babies.

@catsaresocute650 All those things you mentioned happened or continue to happen in ALL societies for one reason or another. You would find that it's culture before anything else (especially if they are conservative).
I don't know if you meant you wish to see those topics discussed in general or with the view of the religion in mind. I can only comment on the religious perspective.
These are all things Europe and Christianity had gone through until a few decades ago. It was only until the later 1900s that Europeans women were allowed to go to university (or even go to war). Muslim women had been going to universities well over a thousand years before European women were able to do so-mostly of Christian backgrounds. The first institutionalised universities and hospital were founded by Muslims in Muslim countries. To this day Muslim women go to universities if they want to - anyone preventing them would be doing so from their own standpoint whether it may be cultural or personal as there is nothing in the faith that generally prevents them from doing so.
Remember how European women used to dress in say the 1950s compared to now? It would be obscene if the women then dressed like many of those now (i.e. you can't force change to norms of societies).
As far as I know from research, the most sexual violence cases reported by region or continent was Europe and North America, especially East Europe. And this was both during and after their religious periods, which would be Christian? However, I'm not going to saying it is because I'm not going to overgeneralise entire populations. Other larger regions/continents have less reports, maybe because they aren't as secular and are grounded in their principles or faith that don't allow the escalation of domestic violence. Reasons aren't as clear.
LGBTQ+ rights are still contested amongst many practising Christians, Jews, etc. to this day and is even mentioned to go against their Scriptures - so this cannot be pinned on faith/another faith for properly practising what they preach. I doubt Jesus would just change the message to suit the modern society. It's only as the western countries became more secular and less religious, that they started opening up to these ideas and rights which is mostly the past 15 years really, especially after Obama.
Critics of religions exist in Muslim countries. However, criticising any faith will receive backlash from adherents of thar faith regardless. There is a difference in criticism, hatred/defamation and outright blasphemy. Some countries treat blasphemy harsher.
In India, Hindus lynch the religious minorities (mostly Muslims) to this day and the government don't care. The same happened in Burma/Myanmar. Remember the Rohingya or the Uighurs in China? In America, they used to treat people of other backgrounds as subhuman and often kill them (outside of slavery) - those sentiments still last to many supremacists to this day. Hitler, in his book Mein Kampf states he is a Christian - and what did he do? Because of that many Germans have a similar ideology. In France, they are basically trying to remove Muslims and stop them from practising their religion. The same in China and even Korea. There is no white supremacy equivalent in the Middle East, only national pride or a supremacist view of that standpoint but not regionally or racially
Many eastern countries of non-Abrahamic faith, whether religious or secular, do not accept LGBTQ+. They may go as far as the G part but nothing more, the rest is generally banned in most Asian countries. Why? Because they are accustomed to their traditions where this is not the normality. Even the G relationships have to be done discreetly in a lot of cases - whilst it may be becomimg accepted to see, it's not accepted fully in the scale of reality (i.e. interviews and polls in those countries show many parents don't want their children to be in such groups AND that's not just the LGBT community but religious and other communities which are not practised as the norms there). Gay people have existed in communities for many centuries but everything else the LGBTQ+ community represents, not really.
Majority conservative Christians and Jews don't agree with LGBTQ+ rights. Because it goes against their faith. Likewise with Islam, there won't really be much traction. It's more of a you can do what you want with your children but don't go pushing the LGBTQ+ agenda to the Middle East-practically the most conservative countries in the world by culture irrespective of religions (you can see many Christians of the region take the same stance).
In other words, the discussion wouldn't have gotten very far because there are counter examples, whereas the topic of the video is long-rooted in the history of Europe from the middle ages to this day.

@techworld-kc6lt Those crimes go beyond faith. Christians have done it since the early Roman periods, the Crusades, Atlantic Slave Trade, Invasion to Iraq, etc. The same with Jews, Hindus, Atheists, and Aliens (according to abductee reports).

Great conversation. Important topic AND missing a few facts. Islam by the Ottoman Turks DID occupy half of Europe from Hungary to Istambul, for some nations right up until a 100 tears ago.
The difficulty is that people in the so called West tend to exchange West -colonizing- Europe with the Whole of Europe when talking about Europe. Secondly, islam occupied in a 100 tears time with arabic background from India to Marocco and Iberia. So there IS a memory. For modern day islam. Yes the West did intervene many times. But mostly due to oil and gas and world economic power, rather than the elevating ideology of democracy. Which I endorse fully but also know how its sacred appeal is undermined by the hypocrosy of using it as a cover for hidden non democratic use

Observant Christians, Jews and Muslims have very much in common, in that they share very many values and beliefs.
The people of modern day 'Western' secular democratic Nations have broken away from their religious foundational values, beliefs and traditions, and are therefore much further removed from Christianity than Christianity is to Judaism and Islam.

Lee Rigby would have enjoyed this interview with kuffar Oborne were he to still have a head on his shoulders. Sura 47 the Holy Book says quote . ' When ye encounter the infidels, strike off their heads till ye have made a great slaughter among them, and of the rest make fast the fetters.'. Nothing wrong with that is there ?
