You might have just convinced the younger folks that luxury trains aren’t just for the oldies! Saving up for this one for sure!

sitting in the lounge all day with an endless supply of complimentary booze? sign me up. though i assume by law there is no where on board you can smoke so thatd be a deal breaker for me on such a long journey. only manage the longer 8-14 hour countrylink trips due to the more frequent stops meaning a quick few minutes outside.

You will be surprised how many younger people are now travelling on Australian luxury trains. My son (26) and I (49) traveled on the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs in April 2021, we had a large number of younger 20s somethings on the train.

@@iris657 I'm a chain smoker went on the Ghan in April Adelaide to Alice. It is a long trip but while you are on the train drinking eating etc you don't feeling sick or withdrawals. I wasn't wanting a smoke while the train was moving but as soon as it stopped I was dying for one lol.

The plan is to take this train across the continent (Perth-Sydney) and then travel up the East Coast from Sydney up to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.
Also going to spend some time in Singapore along the way because why not.

I took the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth in November 2018 using the Gold Single service as well. I flew in from the States and went straight to Central Station to catch the train. A really great experience. The stop at Rawlinna to dine under the stars is magical. Hopefully you will be able to complete the journey to Perth in the future. I too travelled in Gold single from Sydney to Perth in 2015 but unfortunately we didn't make Perth due to a derailment so had to return overnight to Adelaide and catch a flight from there to Perth. But despite all this I loved the journey all the same. Last year I was supposed to travel on the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide then on the Overland from Adelaide to Melbourne but thanks to covid this never happened. Im now hopefull that I'll be able to travel back over to Australia very soon. Being a solo traveller I thought the journey would be a bit daunting but couldn't have been more wrong the staff where fantastic and made me very welcome plus seating me with other people and being introduced to my fellow passengers made the journey so enjoyable and along with the stunning views of the Outback and the Nullarbor was incredible. Also went wine tasting in the Barossa Valley. This Journey is a must for anybody that's thinking of doing this you won't regret it. Its defiantly a Journey I would do again in an heart beat.

Rory, thanks again for your reviews.
I have recently been on the Ghan and Indian Pacific (in gold twin and singles) and would like to share an idea.
In the gold twin rooms, the upper bunks require a degree of nimbleness to reach which is not always suited to those elderly or otherwise less agile patrons. Also, as you've observed, the showers in the gold twin are also less suited to those who are not as mobile or stable as they would like to be, the showers in the roomette cars are much more spacious.
Therefore, maybe patrons who are partners should consider 2 single cabins, and they should be able to get them opposite each other. (That way, at least one person will be facing forward) Most people I have met tend to spend a large amount of time in the lounge car anyway.
I also heard criticism of the "rockiness" of the train across central NSW. These tracks are quite old, so please do not expect the smoothness that you may encounter is other parts of Aus or the world.

    • @miniveedub
      @miniveedub 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We did the trip in gold twin ten years ago, one of us reasonably nimble but the other definitely not. The more nimble of us took the top bunk so that wasn’t an issue. The bathrooms have been upgraded since our trip; back then they had the stainless steel drop down basin and toilet so when they were folded up out of the way the shower area was quite roomy and with the flat front on the basin and toilet unit there were no protrusions to bump against and there was a grab bar if you needed it. Other than that it was the same fabulous service, meals and camaraderie that Rory experienced on this trip.

I commenced my working life in 1970 and after a year of working, my first holiday was on the Indian Pacific - First Class - Sydney to Perth and Return - $162.50. I was only 17 and travelled by myself and there were only 2 classes of travel back then, First and Second Class. It is only comparatively recently that the carriages have been upgraded. The First Class bar and lounge area took up a whole carriage, whilst the Second Class bar and lounge area took half a carriage, with " day seating " the other half. The train had extended stops at Broken Hill, Port Pirie, Kalgoorlie and Perth. There was a group of country NSW ladies who travelled at the same as me and all they did all day was played cards in the First Class lounge. On the return trip, there was a national rail strike from memory and the train staff voted on whether or not to continue to Sydney from Broken Hill, as the staff changed at each state border. They voted to continue and we were the only train travelling in NSW at the time and still had signal stops, lol. Even though I was only 17, I still enjoyed alcohol as everyone thought I was older. I still have all the slides I took of the journey. I cannot believe the cost of the Indian Pacific these days, but if money isn't an issue, do it. Thank you Rory, great vid, keep up the good work.

That would be a very interesting subject to hear more about. I am guessing that in 1970 the Indian Pacific was still a normal train as opposed to a luxury tourist train and things were more basic.

@@Ben-xe8ps Thanks Ben. Whilst the train was less than a year old, it was rather basic. The only thing included was the food, drinks were extra. Because I was the only single occupant in the carriage, I was told they just put on a " 2nd " class carriage and put down what was effectively a carpet hall runner down the corridor. The trip was three days to Perth, I stayed three days in Perth and then 3 days back. What seems only a few years ago, my sister and brother-in-law caught the train from Perth to Sydney and when I picked them up at Central, nothing had changed. The train celebrated 50 years in 2020.

I love how quickly the other passengers became friendly with you and interactive when you were filming. I bet you had a great time.
Also, Earl Grey with milk. Very few enjoy a "London Fog", I think more people should try it. If available, add a dash of vanilla.

Rory I just wanted to thank you on this video as you just gave me a great idea to go on this train. I am planning to go on to Adelaide as you did and then fly to Sydney when we are allowed. This is the best thing I learned today, thank you very much for uploading this video

Ooh la la - looks like some of the oldies were getting a bit flirty with you! 😜
Anyhow, thanks for an immersive review. Truly felt like I was part of the trip from the beginning.
Hoping for it to be a journey my partner and I will personally experience once domestic travel safely returns with some definite certainty.
    Stay safe and well! 🤞🙏 🚞 🛤

Lovely, complete review. It seemed like fun and I loved the shot you took of the South Australian landscape through your glass of champagne. Says it all about the feel of the trip, I reckon it would look good in the Indian Pacific brochure.

Great video showing every aspect of the trip. I liked that you showed a lot about the social side, important for people planning to travel alone. You are obviously a very sociable guy! So it worked, full marks! As well as heaps of info about accommodation, food (my favourite!) also.
    Good work! 👍
