Why Weird Tactics Work

  • I get a lot of people that will come into the stream for the first time, see my tactic, and ask why I go asymmetrical. I would like to say I do not always use an asymmetrical tactic on Football Manager. I just happened to use one this year. I also have now made a video about why these are the best tactics so I can refer people to it and stop explaining the finer tactical points surrounding the imbalance within a tactic to exploit your opponent’s tactic. Not in a game-breaking way, you used to be able to ACTUALLY break the game. A good tactic is not ‘breaking the game’ so leave me alone.
I actually really enjoy getting into those nuanced things in Football Manager on stream so maybe I should take this video back and force you to come to watch me say it over and over again. It really is a good time. Anyways, hopefully, you will be more comfortable unbalancing your tactic a little (or a lot) to try to make the best use of those new shiny wonderkids you have. The FM gods dictate the best players for you to sign, getting comfortable using them all in their best positions is a tactical art that this video should help you with.
    Much Love,

As a semi professional football coach, youd be surprised with how some of these points make up the foundations of squad building in the real world. Positions are not so important in the modern game, its more about principles of play and management of space. Would love to see Football Manager implement the ability to change your shape in and out of possession to really make these kinds of tactics represent the way they are played in real life. Just because you have a wide striker does not mean he cant drop into a wide area to create a block out of possession.
Top stuff Zealand and Sports Interactive!

I regret that too : players on FM are SOOOOO rigid with the tactics
That made us, coaches, true masters of the game, but that's not realistic
For example, City love to have a wingback to join the centerback during possession. Maybe I'm stupid, but I cannot made that on FM
Or more complex things, like "when create a high press or not ?" Yes we could choose but it's nothing near of what real pressing on tactics is
More basically, I tried so hard to create a tactics where players Switch position, like Paulinho and Messi at Barcelona, but again I cant

I’ve found Asymmetrical defensive weaknesses can be covered by having a player who otherwise has no defensive duties (ie the left sided striker) stick closely to the overlapping opponent fullback by adding the instructions “mark tighter” and “mark specific player”. It closes that hole completely, although it does tire that player out faster

The craziest tactic and achievement I have ever performed in FM, was in FM12. I played a 6-4-0 with FC Porto, but only in Champions League after the group stage, both home and away.
Lucho Gonzalez was scoring clinical goals in counter-attacks and Maicon was scoring ridiculous free kicks. I won with this tactic, in the first year and without repeating any game! It was crazy! Hamburg, then Man United, then (I can't remember) and in the final FC Barcelona winning 2 to 1.
I don't think that I will be able to top this, ever!

I've been playing asymmetrical formations since FM18. It is a major key for smaller clubs with low rep. and low budget to rely on available players who are much better than others in the team and win games against stronger teams.
I often make asymmetrical formations to cover for weak points (especially in defense), I could play with one winger and a DM little more to the side to cover for a slow CB or FB on Attack/AUTO.

    Bad Zeeland.
He did not mention that your footing can alter your asymmetrical tactics.
*IT IS NOT* all about offense. *Gets the ruler*
Depending on the handedness of your formation you will get different results.
The footing of your opponent will determine the dominate side, and cause them to attack more in that area.
If you move "counter" to the flow of their attack lane, you shift your asymmetry to offensive flow.
They attack right, you attack left, neither offensive unit intersect.
If you move "against" the flow of their attack lane, you shift your asymmetry to defensive flow.
They attack right, and you attack right. Your attack flows through their attack.
This is similar to martial arts concepts.
You want to "oppose force with force" in some occasions, and prevent the action from initiating.
Block a punch with your forearm bone, or elbow. "Hard Style"
(if you have a tall, strong, tough midfielder ready to press and tackle, for example)
In other times, you want to "work the circle", and redirect the incoming force away from vital areas.
Grab & Pull on the wrist of someone as they throw the punch at your face. "Soft Style"
(forcing a throw in, or intercepting a pass by an agile and quick defender, for example)
By not balancing your tactical style on both sides, you emphasize the shift towards the "Hard" and "Soft" philosophy "sideways" and not just "yourside/myside" for your tactic.
If you give them space to move without immediate opposition, you are using soft asymmetrical style.
If you confront them immediately within their zone of control, you are using hard asymmetrical style.
So choose wisely, and pay attention to your players feet. They need to align with your enemies footing to be hard style.

I actually found 4-2-4 on low tempo (2FB 2BWD 2BBM 2W 2AF) very useful as I had too many games and very good attackers and few good midfielders. In my wolves save Declan Rice (Model Citizen BBM) asked to leave his team so I bought him around 36M and the 1st year of 4-2-4 won PRM, reached final CL, won FA cup. The rest is history.

I like that you used asymmetrical to create overloads, but I used mine in almost the opposite way 😅😂 to give players vacant space ahead of them to exploit, and to maximise the amount of diagonal, line-splitting passes available 😂
    Striker playing left side? (4-2-3-1)
10 plays right side, easier to thread diagonal through balls behind the defence than vertical ones, and if he runs forward then he is occupying a different dangerous space than the striker, giving another option and stretching the defence.
Then the more progressive CM is left side, giving him room ahead to push into, or a midfield-splitting pass to the right-sided 10.
Then the DM right side for similar reasons.
In this the left winger does start further forward and close to the left striker though, so I guess that would be the overload part 🤔

I always try to contextualize my "weird" primary tactic as not actually asymmetrical, just a standard common formation that maximizes your player's abilities. I see your tactic and see a 4-3-3. My formation is fairly similar to yours at ODFC, except one of my team's best players is only GREAT as a CAM, and I have two right side players that are a very solid, speedy inverted winger, and an absolute poacher of a wide target/raumdeuter. I also move my left side back into wingback position, both because the right side overload means he's the only player on the whole team responsible for that attaching part of the pitch, and because one of my wonderkid subs can play that spot, but not fullback. But I still consider it a 4-3-3, or even a 4-3-1-2

  • @Eluarelon

I have to admit that I have an immense dislike to assymetrical anythings, so I keep avoiding doing those tactics as much as I can. I have started to dabble with this in my last 2 saves though, playing a 4141 with FC Saarbrücken where I put one of the wide midfielders into an advanced midfield position, because I had problems getting my offense to work. I'm still trying to go back to a 4231 all the time though, only that my wide defenders getting overrun all the time in this tactic (they are just not that good, tbh). The other save being Doncaster Rovers that I just started as what will probably be my last FM21 save, where I am using a 4222 wide with direct counters. There I might change my 2CM setup with James Coppinger as DLP into a CM-DM setup with Madger Gomez as a Regista (that guy has played some devastating long passes already creating all kinds of havoc within the opponents offense and I love to see the opponent's defense being brought completely out of change by those long balls). Still, looking at a tactics board with an assymetrical tactic makes me immediately try and put the chess pieces back to where thery belong.

Can’t play with an asymmetrical formation because it’s asymmetrical and it really irritates me

I used to dislike Asymethricals a lot, because they were game engine breaking back in FM16 or 17 days. Or maybe even before that ? Not sure.
Nowadays they seem to be "fixed", even thou I've noticed a couple of plays while doing asymethical changes to my team mid-game. Like droping one of your IFs behind the striker, slightly to the side, and making him Shadow Striker. All of a sudden, the opposition's central backs gets glued to my striker, leaving the SS a nice wide channel to exploit. And if your striker is brave, strong and tall enough, flick on balls become deadly. I do need to note that I have a WB (A) on that flank and likely MEZ or CAR on the same side of central midfield. But for all I care, I could just tick a "stay wider" on a B2B midfielder and it'll be just as good. Match engine - still not perfect.
But I would like to know more about tactical differences between playing versus the AI and playing versus actual player managers (ie - multiplayer games). Does seems like stuff like KNAP tactics wouldn't work in multiplayer games. Noticed completely different set of set plays in the streamer showdows as well.

not asymmetric but i got a dirty 3-2-2-3-0 rocking at the minute. 3 CB / 2WB / 2DM / 3ACM loool i just won the uruguayan 2nd div and got a nice squad ready for next season.

Zealand, thoughts on future versions of fm enabling users to select both attacking formation and defensive formation? something chelsea does irl for example: 3-4-1-2 offset to right in attack and 5-2-3 in defense most times. I get that this can be achieved atm with player instructions and formational intricacies. Something worth pondering however.

I play 3-4-2-2, 3 center banks, two midfielders, 2 wingers playing from the wide midfield, 2 Attacking midfielders and 2 strikers. I don't even know how tf it works i just know i won la liga with 170 goals scored and 10 conceded.

I mean irl coaches play 2 wingers on the same side to bully a weak fullback. I rmb Mourinho did it vs Liverpool against TAA when he was at Man utd.

DM’s name : Katsikis translates in Greek as goat (the animal, not CR7).
