Wild bill over at vintage car history did a great video on that prick Selden ( guy who patented internal combustion engine)
• Ford VS Selden - VCH S...
This car is currently on display at canton auto museum for directions

I will take my 2002 Honda Civic EX with 197,000 miles. Positives: it's reliable and economical. Negatives: it's got an interference engine. My great grandad had a Dusenberg, but alas he had no money to leave to me.
Note the tubular hydraulic shock absorbers. Back then most cars which had shocks used lever-type friction dampers which had to be pre-set to the road conditions you were on. And if the odomoter is correct, this has 52K miles on it, and the placard shown @21:02 says of the running gear only the tires, the leather shock covers, the radiator header tank, one piston ring and the paint on the block aren't original. That's phenomenal for a car of this age when nearly nothing was optimized yet and things tended to wear quickly. Also notice it is one of 6 remaining Limos and was guaranteed for life to the original owner.
WYR though this Simplex is superb in so many ways, I have to go with the Duesy because everyone knows it as the best. Next round goes to the Horch, one of the original "Auto Union" companies which the modern Audi corporation is based from.
Love seeing the period ads at the end, but I think I'll pass on crossing the seas on the Lusitania; I just got a bad feeling about being on her...
Hi Jay. Wow! It's pretty amazing that this car has survived in such an original state! On the front door cards, they could be real leather or they could be leatherette - a fake leather based on cloth. You'd be more familiar with leatherette as the covering on 100+ year old books/bibles. As you note, it's cloth in the back. Cheers.
The Duesy & the RR for me from the choices offered. When I was a kid my dad would take me to the classic auto show at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yr after yr & my favorite car quickly became the Duesenbergs... any Duesenberg!
Looks like the big SUV of its time. The Duesenberg looks like the best car.
That duesenburg was from 23
Awesome episode. I love seeing very old original cars. The cylinder cocks on the engine of this one are really cool. I'd choose the 1916 Duesenberg and the 1916 Rolls Royce, although the Locomobile and Horch are close seconds.
Have you been to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland? I always enjoyed that place.
I have never been to the Crawford Muesum need to go one day =)
1916 Locomobile, the body styling looks the best. The Simplex is alright, but that body style always looked "crane" like. It's probably a bit overpriced, and I wonder how it would look if it were restored?
This one was never painted
I watch your Channel all the time and I live just outside of Thomasville Georgia. Hope you enjoy your visit! If you can check out the auto museum at Mr Chicks restaurant in Cairo just next door.
I want to go there so bad I might see if I can go Wednesday I’ll have to call tomorrow =) that’s awesome if you bump into me be sure to say hey
14:11 I remember how popular "Dutch Boy" paints were when I was a kid. I see he's watching you make this video!
Fantastic craftsmanship 👏👏👏
WYR
I'd be honored to wax and check the air pressure on any one of those 😱❤️❤️❤️.
Great Episode
Happy Motoring ✌️🤠
=)
Jay, I am so pleased you will be introducing motorbikes, I hope a few European models show up in the mix, as so many models exist, it makes the automobile world look stable by comparison.
Most definitely =) Indian is going to be 1st
1916 Crane Simplex
That's an L-head not a T-head? T-head should have intake on one side and exhaust on the other side?
Thank you so much for that correction
Fascinating. I’d take the 1916 Duesenberg for going out with the family, but that Locomobile looks good for a sporty young guy.
Sweet choices
Great video, beautiful car!! I like the little dog figure lifting his leg on the front tire... cute!!😂
=)
Only Jay Leno's garage channel features both one Crane Simplex and several Duesenberg cars restored to show level.
From the brands featured in what you rather Horch is a early version of Audi. All American brands are defunct, unfortunately. The Rolles Royce is still own by BMW.
Isota Frascini is long gone unfortunately as a personal luxury car brand, today producing engines.
I plan on covering Bugattis I would love to cover at least one Dusenberg by the end of the year I was gonna wait until the base got bigger to start going after some of these heavy hitters.. =) the goal is to at least cover one car from every automotive manufacture in America happy you enjoyed this episode great choices
@@What.its.like. When it comes to luxury cars in that time, to me, the most obscure brand is the most interesting - Locomobile which managed to be bankrupt thank to Durant nearsightedness.
I watched your episode with Rickenbacker. It is interesting to note that all luxury key design points in the body of Rickenbacker in 1926 were already implemented in 1916 in wood in Crane Simplex.
To me it exemplifies how luxury copies clues from ultraluxury.
"I bet you've never even heard of an Isotta Fraschini." - Norma Desmond "Sunset Boulevard" c. 1950
I’ve seen one they have a presence
@@What.its.like. there was one if not two at the Blackhawk museum in SF area about 25 years ago. I remember the radiator had a glass cover over an " IF ' for Isotta Fraschini, but the car is so oversized that it made one wonder IF it were real.
Locomobile
Thanks J great car.
esp liked how intricate the dash was
I'm #1
15:24 what would that small roof hatch be used for? Ventilation?
WYR Duesenberg
WYR Rolls Royce
"MOONLIGHT SERENADE" BY GLENN MILLER
great stuff as always, Thx Jay
It might be Glenn miller not that song yeah I think that was for ventilation closed body’s where rare in 1916 sweet choices
This one required a deep dig and you were great at articulating the history. Much appreciated, especially since my last name is Crane. 😏
Lofty exclusive cars, I must say.
My WYR has to be the Crane, obviously. 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks again for your expertise and cheek.
Well roundedness galore.
Oh, oh. My guess for the music is 'Stardust'.
I love the history packed ones they take a little longer but totally worth it =) happy you dig this episode
Hi Jay! What a fabulous car! And looks to be unrestored! Can you imagine a new car, even if stored inside will look as good as this one did after 100+ years!?? I'm thinking NO! And someone even shot this one! COOL!
According to the placard, this car was never painted ever I thought that was really cool
First 1916 White,, second 1916 Crane-Simplex, and throw in a Cunningham and Sayers & Scovill sedan (the last 2 made special order sedans as well as hearses and ambulances. Great find of a rare car.
Sweet choices I would love to find and cover a Cunningham
Thanks for the shout out! The video that goes into ALAM detail is Ford vs Selden- VCH Special #20.
You bet I figured you explained it all in detail why explain it again if somebody wants to watch the video, they can just go watch yours =)
This is a great company history, Jay. I really thought you did an excellent job. And the example you chose has very nice patina.
Happy you dig this one apparently this car has never been painted left the factory like that
Totally enjoyed this episode Jay thanks for posting & for a magnificent channel.
Happy you dig this episode =) and channel
You’re in Thomasville? I’m right next door in Tallahassee, FL!
That’s awesome we went spring hopping today I love the springs
Thomasville, Ga, see a sidecar, especially if near Macon, flag it down, probably me....
=) we are going to stop at buc-ces on the way home never been there
1916 RR first, Horsch second, in my humble opinion.
Sweet choices
I like the Dusiburg.
2:45 I wonder if Carlton R. Mabley was any relation to Moms Mabley.
Idk I wondered that as well
While I love both yours and Wild Bill's videos, when it comes to the Selden saga, let me suggest that you read DRIVE by Lawrence Goldstone for a total picture of the facts
Awesome thank you so much I’ll have to look into that.. I think Selden was a jerk it would be like someone patenting walking
@@What.its.like. And crawling too !!!
Enjoyed the video
2x Simplex. Go American.
Sweet choices
wyr Nr. 1: Locomobile, because I'm loco
Sweet choice =)
Very interesting car simplex- simplex

Another great video.Jay. So 3 questions: In your opinion was the higher price justified? Why was Simple better than any thing else? I am not seeing it. Ok question 3 what in the world was that car next to it with the pipes sticking out of the cowl and the things sticking up out of the roof?
That is a custom car. The guy built a pipe organ into a car. I will cover that eventually it’s a one of one car.
This was the most expensive car America made before the Duesenberg. I don’t know if the price was justified just like the Duesenberg really I don’t know if that price was justified don’t get me wrong. Duesenberg are really cool but you’re buying the engine 1st and foremost I’ve heard that driving them can be a bit of a chore because they handle like a truck. Packard had a synchromesh transmission. They even had a four-speed synchromesh transmission. Duesenberg didn’t have that… but getting back to the crane simplex idk 🤷♂️ to be honest I’m more versed in 30s and 50s cars but I love looking at the oddball cars. There’s a lot of innovation in the teens that just kind of went by the wayside lost technology.
@@What.its.like. Thanks Jay I must say I agree with you. I am not seeing the extra cost. That said when you compare the styling and size of the Simplex compared to say any other 1916 car at the time it is quite I remarkable car. Keep doing episodes on early cars. The brass era cars are my fav's but they are a handful to drive and to get stopped
Definitely the mission is to cover at least one car from every manufacturer in USA and all the major ones different body styles truck and wagons =)
Simplex for both.
Glen Miller?
Perhaps 🤔
Sweet choices
WYR: All of them.
NTT: Bella Notte from Lady and the Tramp.
Sweet choices not that song or band
@@What.its.like. Disney animated movies from back in the day have good songs.
locomobile, locomobile, locomobile
Sweet choice I would really love to cover one this year at least one.. =)
I liked your humor in this video
Happy you dig this episode =)
Love the Simplex! Bring on the motorcycles!
Sweet Indian will be 1st
Well just to follow an unrelated string there was a Simplex motorcycle made in New Orleans. Cheers.

White/Horch
Sweet choices
@@What.its.like. Love Horch autos. White was a solid company and still makes trucks. parts....
I really want to cover one hopefully this year
