Used compressed air to purge the system of the condensed steam and to start the atomization of the fuel. Used a ball of cotton to start the fire in the fire box. 14:35 "I"m at top dead center", that just cracks me up, Jay was like, "get out and push". All that torque and they couldn't get the engine to turn over. lmao!
most likely has nothing to do about torque. I have seen this many times on bigger engines like MaK 6M552C The cylinder is in a position where nothing will happen, so you got to turn it for it to start.
Yeah that's what you get with a single-cylinder machine. That's why steam locomotives have the cylinders offset by 90 degrees, can't really give those a push...
Sometimes I've found the really quiet vehicles scare them more. I've driven past horses enough times (not honking/revving my engine), but tried to sneak past one on a bicycle and it got skittish and the rider told me to announce my coming first.
Not really. they're fun because it's a rare novelty. We got used to modern cars and technology. If you took any modern piece of equipment back 200 years people would abandon their steam engines and worship you as a God.
@@Horny_Fruit_Flies True enough, if we could only have some perspective and be thankful for what we do have we'd realize we've got it pretty good, and we'd be a lot happier.

In Great Britain they still ran steam lorries into the 1950's, the railroads used them for deliveries The name of the tv series was/is "The Salvage Squad," I have seen a dozen episodes on the internet..
last commercial use of a Sentinel steam lorry was about early 1980s, A few places still used em because they could dodge tax. Theres even a few heritage places that started using them again
our MPG would be through the roof and when you run out of fuel on a road trip, just throw some trash and tinder from the side of the road and your good to go for free, we could tow a train, carbon footprint would be lower, and we wouldn't have to hear people with excessively loud exhausts. Gas combustion engine is more efficient then boiler and steam, BUT people seem to forget you can toss anything into a furnace to make heat(trash, gas, wood, leaves, coal, electric heating, etc.), gas on the other hand has to be extracted, refined, transported and sold to us plebs to dump into our engine. Really is a shame steam lost out, electric is the next opportunity though.
I saw a steam car going west on Olympic in the Sawtelle area one late afternoon at the end of a horrific day at the office. I was so elated; I could hardly wait to get home and call my car-loving father. I was clear under the 405 freeway before I remembered he'd been dead for decades. I called Webb Farrer instead, and he told me the car was probably Jay's. A great experience, for which I'm greatful.
steam cars must've been extremely hard to maintain and use back in the early 1900s if it's that difficult to use now and keep fron burning to the ground with modern fire retardants and what not
Actually that's pretty true Part of the starting process involves heating the water chamber to begin producing steam. And a lotta fire does a lotta heating

What an awesome car, I have never seen a steam car before. Here in the UK we have many steam enthusiasts who preserve and actually use steam tractors and trucks and of course our heritage steam railways in a few parts of the country which carry passengers every day.
I love Jay Leno's cars. Glad hes using his money to keep these pieces of history alive. What a wonderful hobby. Thanks Jay!!!
Thank god for guys like Jay!
Simply out of words to express this beauty .. old yet so modern.
That thing moves way faster than it can provide safety for the passengers. That was very cool.
When were seatbelts introduced?😥

Love that Jay drives all those cars..
I’m impressed with how knowledgeable Jay is. Very passionate about cars and it’s obvious.
Mr. leno, its all ways good to see your collection of cars. I been there whith Mae a Wish foundation. I trasport wish kids now. I remember those good all days, when I was transporting gests for your show. Am retired now and working on old cars. Tank you for videos.
Wow. This is awesome. Much respect for maintaining such a nice vehicle. Greetings from Riga, Latvia.
Wow! I love that the throttle looks like a secondary steering wheel.
I like how Jay's enthusiasm for cars always comes shining through.
Jay is the best and that car is very interesting . Absolutely museum quality stuff.
Way cool!!
Jays passion for automobiles is unmatched!!
Jay's a real class act. That's about as advanced a steam car gets. Very, very cool.
always glad leno actually drives the things he has. So many people with classic cars just let them sit there and they never touch them which is a silly and a shame.
I’m gonna be heading out to LA sometime next year and I’ll have to remember to take my nitroglycerin with me cause if I’m sitting at a light and these two guys pull up beside me in one of jays magnificent old cars I’ll probably wind up having a heart attack...what a honor for Jay Leno to even offer you to drive it let alone ride in it....(meaning that most of us don’t know him in person or own a show like this) but still a honor.....this White steam is my favorite out of his other White/Stanley steamer cars....👍🏼
14:35 "I"m at top dead center", that just cracks me up, Jay was like, "get out and push". All that torque and they couldn't get the engine to turn over. lmao!
most likely has nothing to do about torque.
I have seen this many times on bigger engines like MaK 6M552C
The cylinder is in a position where nothing will happen, so you got to turn it for it to start.
What happened to the simpling pedal?
Need a hand powered dead center over turn gadget. Ahh???
Some one should start making these brand new! AAA?
Yeah that's what you get with a single-cylinder machine. That's why steam locomotives have the cylinders offset by 90 degrees, can't really give those a push...
"Gas powered cars scare horses" - Jay Leno
Sometimes I've found the really quiet vehicles scare them more. I've driven past horses enough times (not honking/revving my engine), but tried to sneak past one on a bicycle and it got skittish and the rider told me to announce my coming first.
@@TimpBizkit older gas cars would frequently backfire
I think that if this were to be made today, there would be a market
There's one thing remains
Turn lights and seat belts
Now it ready for mass production!
LOVE THESE STEAM CARS. NICE WORK.
Its crazy that this technology is more fun and impressive than anything modern
Not really. they're fun because it's a rare novelty. We got used to modern cars and technology. If you took any modern piece of equipment back 200 years people would abandon their steam engines and worship you as a God.
@@Horny_Fruit_Flies exactly my thoughts
It's just fun not any better
@@Horny_Fruit_Flies True enough, if we could only have some perspective and be thankful for what we do have we'd realize we've got it pretty good, and we'd be a lot happier.
If fun as in hobby then I can see the point. But I'll take pushing a button to start a car rather than almost burning my car every morning.
Visiting Jay and his collection of cars is on my bucket list. It would be fun to hang out and talk about cars all day long.
I have so much respect for Jay and his cars. I could spend all day just listening to him talk about them
Gay
Great respect to you.... Senior person.... Very very enthusiastic people..... Live long.. Live happy.. God bless you
You have to take a driving class as well as a startup class just to turn the car on WOW now I understand why they had chauffeurs
WOW imagine a steam-car with today's engineering =D
Probably wouldn't be much different tbh.
it would start in 15 seconds and have full steam in 2 min.
drive like most cars but requiring servicing every 2000km or 1 month
The Electric starter killed both steam and electric vehicles in the end
In Great Britain they still ran steam lorries into the 1950's, the railroads used them for deliveries
The name of the tv series was/is "The Salvage Squad," I have seen a dozen episodes on the internet..
last commercial use of a Sentinel steam lorry was about early 1980s, A few places still used em because they could dodge tax. Theres even a few heritage places that started using them again
Never know this masterpiece still exist. Wonderful.
He said “when I go to work” . I love how humble he is , he doesn’t have to work but still does.
9:59 "Power slides are tricky." LOL Yeah, with those thin wooden spokes, I'd certainly think so.
When steam locomotives hit the road...

well...you won´´t run out of fuel ever
Or fire
@@trainfan-ks5hk what a dumb thing to say

Crusty Sock boats and other vehicles
what is a crusty sock boat O_O?
John Lalawethika good old vehicles
our MPG would be through the roof and when you run out of fuel on a road trip, just throw some trash and tinder from the side of the road and your good to go for free, we could tow a train, carbon footprint would be lower, and we wouldn't have to hear people with excessively loud exhausts.
@@BenJaminLongTime burning trash would release huge amounts of carbon.
Tate: “I’ve got a Bugatti”
Leno: “I got steam cars”
I saw a steam car going west on Olympic in the Sawtelle area one late afternoon at the end of a horrific day at the office. I was so elated; I could hardly wait to get home and call my car-loving father. I was clear under the 405 freeway before I remembered he'd been dead for decades. I called Webb Farrer instead, and he told me the car was probably Jay's. A great experience, for which I'm greatful.
30 bhp / 1 bajillion footpounds of torque
steam cars must've been extremely hard to maintain and use back in the early 1900s if it's that difficult to use now and keep fron burning to the ground with modern fire retardants and what not
I love steam engines, like 1 hp and a million ft lbs of torque lol
Just start her out in 7th!
Yeah
My God, all those machiens are absolutely gorgeous 😍
Very nice
Looks and drives great
Nice to know theres people like you around preserving our history
so basically if you want to start the car you need to set the car on fire XD
daeux our cars blow up every half a second.
Hopefully you get it
Actually that's pretty true
Part of the starting process involves heating the water chamber to begin producing steam. And a lotta fire does a lotta heating

Man I love steam power.... I can only imagine what a modern steam car would be like unfortunately :(
Wow! Leno sure knows everything about all of his cars. He'll grab tools, get on his hands and knees or roll around on the floor to fix/work on his cars. And, he can drive ANYTHING he owns. He's a true classic car guy.
Jay looked a wee bit nervous. What a gorgeous vehicle. My brother has been restoring Ford T's, Runabouts, etc for years and it is a kick to ride in one. Never rode in a steam powered one though, just a train when I was a kid.
