“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends.
Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations.
The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal)

is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance this 2003 version is even more dramatic

It's amazing that Miss Fabian can so dramatically "reorient" this song; I've almost lost track of the ways in which she has done so.
The performance you linked us to has much to recommend it, although I find the dramatic effect lessened by a sense that she is introducing a character and not living it through the song. That self-consciousness, her "I'm really hitting this one out of the park" presentation, is its major flaw. Well, I don't like to speak of Miss Fabian as having flaws, but it's relative to the heart-stopping Montreal performance.
Thank you for your insight into the history of the song. Dalida committed suicide in 1987 after dealing for years with bouts of depression. Her career was long and storied, but she was also surrounded by great sadnesses, including the suicides of several close friends and associates. Her Italian-French background and her facility with languages (she knew five and sang in eleven) remind us of Miss Fabian.

I find this the most compelling performance, by man or woman, I've ever heard. I have watched it hundreds of times and could do so again easily. It is rich, luscious, and finely crafted -- every movement and every breath enrich its quality.
Others have doubtless mentioned that the longer version, which shows Miss Fabian's reaction at the end, is worth watching.

I'm actually ashamed that I did not know her until a few years ago she is a contemporary of Celine Dion. I wish you had showed me last few seconds during the Applause when you see that she is still trapped inside her music it is very moving to watch
She was and is still much better then Celine , historical fact , Renee angelil and his crony have done everything they could to block Lara , Celine was discovered by the public in Quebec after Renee secured the gig of signing for the pop at his visit , before this she was meh ...see “ mon ami m as quiter “ video available here ....then she had a couple hits , meanwhile Lara was booming , but she had to go hit the euro market ,since the Dion mafia was blocking here (bribe Ect...) then Dion did a series of massive flop album while Lara was winning international awards in all country of Europe . See adagio at the world music award , prince and other Mondrian #1 were shocked by her vocal. To this day the Dion mafia does everything to shadow Lara ....the love is not lost ....glad to give you a bit of historical fact from a fan since the early 90s.

I always got the feeling that she might be the inspiration for Dimash holding notes at the end of his own performances (if she used to do this back when Dimash was first watching her) - and then there is the smile on Igor's face when they all hold the note together at the end of "Ti Amo Cosi".
Certainly, the ending of Love is Like a Dream has a similar long ending with the bow toward the ground. I was struck by that as well.
Seeing them perform together is just magical :)

I will speak in English then, even if I'm French, so sorry for the mistakes... That was a very nice reaction. When you said it was the end of a love story, to me, it's more complicated. Unfortunately I can do the difference now, this is more a toxic relationship, there are many clues in the song that shows she is under influence, hold... She loves him so much but she must cheat not to show how horrible she feels in front of people, she doesn't dream, she doesn't live anymore, she looses herself, she doesn't trust her anymore ("yet, I think I had talent", as if she had doubts), she thinks about death, alone, because when you live with such a narcissistic perverse partner, you are alone... You really become sick ! The lyrics are powerful, deep, maybe she lived that, but the singer who wrote that song, Serge Lama, really did.

Il volume non è solo la compressione. Ci sono dei video live in cui lei toglie il microfono e canta senza amplificazione, come se fosse una cantatrice d’opera. Lei ha studiato e ancora studia canto classico. La sua cantatrice preferita è Maria Callas .

L'interpretazione di Lara non ha niente da invidiare a quella del cantante/compositore originale, Serge Lama. E i testi di Alice Dona sono sempre struggenti...però è il compositore/cantante . Non lo sapevo, in effetti davo scontato che fosse una sua canzone! La prossima volta mi documenterò meglio, grazie mille delle informazioni :)
Bisogna dire che le interpretazioni di questa artista sono sempre molto sofisticate e piene di emozioni. Devo dire comunque di amare molto anche l'interpretazione che ne danno i Forestella seppur in modo diverso rispetto a questa esibizione.
