Wonderful reaction and analysis. Haven't seen this much passion in a reaction since your 'early Dimash'! (That's a compliment!!) Lara is truly a gifted performer. The entire concert this song is taken from is worthy of further reactions!! Thanks so much for your time!

Thank you so much, Cedric for showcasing the incredible Lara Fabian. I adore your Dimash reactions and the perspective you bring as an actor/ singer/ filmmaker. You can't go wrong with any of Lara's songs, and I'm sure Eric will provide some guidance. ❤

    More information on Lara Fabian:
Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Aretha, Shirley Bassey, Lisa Fischer, ....
In my personal opinion, she is even the best.
There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 10,000+ attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register.
So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence:
    • she speaks 2 languages natively (french, italian), and 2 others fluently (english, spanish), can speak a bit of dutch (and sicilian), and understand quite well russian and portuguese. She has sung in 12 languages in total
    • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for 200+ songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music, and is at the source of the melodic line.
    • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none
    • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens.
A quick background on her and her career:
She is belgian, her father is flemish and grand mother on father side is dutch, but she also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( the father of her mother is from Detroit). She had been raised in Sicilia first for 7 years then in Belgium so she speaks both italian and french as native languages.
She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory.
She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today. She only moved away from opera to pop because she is first and foremost a songwriter.
After her Eurovision participation in 1988 (4th), she really started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada.
She had been living for years in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship. She moved to Sicilia end of 2022.
She became very famous in Quebec in the early 90s with several double platine records and then conquered France in 1996/1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music).
In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, stayed number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for 58 weeks in a row and was number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US.
This concert is legendary, packed with masterpieces (covered by many great vocalists later on).
But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan.
She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar through her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is absolutely massive in Russia for instance.
She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace", used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera, topped the charts for months and become a recurrent in the local singing contests since then.
Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban (they are friends and he told she is a role model for him), Linda Eder, …
With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there.
Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her.
    She is Dimash's idol:
    • I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep.
    • He covered many of her songs, most of these were composed by Igor Krutoy and written by by Lara.
Out of my mind I can list:
    ○ Adagio (She wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Mademoiselle Hyde (she wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Love of Tired Swans (she wrote the song in French under the title "Je t'aime encore" and was the original performer of the french then the russian versions, Dimash covered the russian version)
    ○ Ascolta La Voce / Vocalize (this was a pure vocalization and she was the original performer, then lyrics were added for Dimash and it was rebranded as "Know")
    • She also wrote the lyrics of Dimash's song "Your Love".
    • And she covered "Love is like a dream" before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva).
    • Finally, they also performed "Ti Amo Cosi" together, in trio with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Sumi Jo then again later with Dmitri and Alina Yarovaya, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida.
Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy: Igor and Dimash connected after his Adagio cover, also endorsed by Lara.
Igor came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him after it.
Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs, some have Lara as a role model and big inspiration (singers from every region in the world: from China and Taiwan, to Philippines, Indonesia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Netherlands, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Italy, France, Belgium, Norway, UK, USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Central Africa, …)
    ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio),

    ○ ....
NB: Lara did cover Caruso , Je suis malade, and Love by grace, these are not her originals, but I mention these here as the related artists were attracted to cover it again after listening to Lara’s version.
Today, Lara still has an amazing voice and tone and can still reach the 5th octave with resonance ; she still offers these emotive renditions that are her unique signature.
In June 2022, she kicked off a WW tour and stunned her fans once again with 5 magical concerts in Canada. She completed the europe part in September/October 2022 and I attended a concert from this tour. It was packed and she was again spectacular.
On April, May, June 2023 she had again some wonderful concerts in Tbilissi, Georgia, then in Ouzbekhistan, Kazakhstan, Romania.
She is about to release a new album and just completed another popular tour in eastern europe (Czech Republic, Moldavia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkiye, Hungary) and in Canada in april-june 2024. She also appeared as a guest in some big events such as Hauser’s concert in Royal Albert Hall (May 9th 2024). Then, after some rest and a few TV Shows, she will tour France in 2025.
The first song of her new album (titled "Ta Peine" - Your Sorrow) was released late January 2024 and is a success in France. Her album is expected to be released in fall 2024.
Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

Nice detail Eric! Been listening to Lara for 30 years and she still dominates my playlist by a lot. She is, in fact, what I listen to before nodding off at night…pretty much every night. I am going on a river cruise next year to Burgundy & Provence and was trying to catch her concert in Dijon but can not coordinate transportation from Lyon to Dijon on that date. C’est dommage.

“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and composed the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version.
She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet during his own Paris concert in January 1995. It was a triumph. So he sat in a front row seat and asked her to sing it again alone.
Lara also had made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power. Serge and Lara became good friends and performed several other duets later on.
The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal)
    th-cam.com/video/eHSyk4SGtuY/w-d-xo.html
is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance the En Toute Intimité, 2003, Paris Olympia version is even more dramatic

I'm no actor, but I took a few classes here and there, and you knew it was real and good when you were in a scene and it was moment to moment another reality you stepped into accepted totally and glided back out of, where you could look back at it and all there was to say was wow, we NAILED that. And having seen Lara live this summer for the first time, twenty-odd years after these videos were made, she is still making that voice live the moment in astounding ways. If you EVER get the chance to see her live, do whatever you have to do, spend whatever time and money you need to, and go. Don't think twice, just do it. It's an experience of a lifetime.

So I live in Montreal. Lara's from Belgium but she blew up here a bit after Celine in the late 80s and we really made fun of her a lot here, the media was borderline cruel with her because she was so over-the-top dramatic, she'd cry in interviews and things like that, it was a lot lol. Clearly incredible voice but poor girl left her heart exposed in life as well as in her art probably a bit too much! People love her to bits though, she lives here full-time now and anything that comes out of her mouth is adored and studied.
Not sure if you're looking for suggestions but I would give you a double bill, bear with me while I explain - Celine's manager & husband René, his intended Celine earlier in the 70s was a woman named Ginette Reno but as they were about to take the really big steps she decided world fame wasn't for her, she was happy with QC fame so she backed away. Celine's mom had René in her sights because she knew he'd been Ginette's manager, she brought him a tape of Celine singing and he went for it, the rest is history.
My suggestion is - Ginette had a song that makes all of QC cry, written by one of our pillars who actually passed away recently, Jean-Pierre Ferland, called C'est beau. It means "It's Beautiful" and it became an anthem for francophone Quebeckers who wanted to separate from Canada. In 2008 it was the 400th anniversary of the founding of the city of Quebec, there was an insane series of concerts put on and Celine was one. SHE BROUGHT OUT Jean-Pierre and started singing C'est beau, then in the second verse Ginette appeared and it was just an explosion of love and tears everywhere, people were drowning lol.
I'd suggest watching Ginette's performance in 75, and then the 2008 performance with both of them. QC's two muses singing together, it's an overwhelming one! I won't put the links in case your comment settings block them but search for:
Ginette Reno - Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin (1975)
Céline Dion & Ginette Reno - Un peu plus haut, Un peu plus loin (2008)
    💜

There's a reason that Lara was Dimash's idol while he was growing up. They have so much in common, from being multi-lingual, to being wonderful storytellers, to the emotion that they can evoke in the listener, and even their humility on and away from the stage. No wonder he covered so many of her songs and did several duets with her!

The best link is from the “Lara the ring Fabian” channel where Gabby has done a wonderful job providing translated close captioning. This is an experience you will treasure…guaranteed.

I knew you were gonna love this one, Cedric! I have watched this umpteen times, and her performance still breaks my heart, un peu. You can see what Dimash loved about her. This whole concert from Montreal is flamazing!! Her voice was totally on point. Her singing CARUSO is also another performance for the ages. Break legs in your show!! Thanks for this ❤

And by the way do you know that "SOS d’un terrien en detresse" is a song from one of the most famous french musical titled Starmania?
One of the last songs where the main character is bending over the body of his girlfriend who just has been killed.
The musical is packed with masterpieces that have been covered by Lara or other greats such as Celine, Cindy Lauper, …

Cedric, I don't where to start? You are so convincing and truthful and talented, you are amazing. I have seen Lara do this performance many, many times watching different reactors literally go into shock and many of them start to cry. Can we, for just a moment, put ourselves into that live audience? When the 16 second finale was over the audience stood AS ONE to offer their thank you and congratulations to a performer who was magnificent in every way.
Cedric, now it must be very clear to you why Dimash was enamored with Lara and the style of her singing which carries so much emotion with it. Being classically trained since he was a little boy Dimash felt he was 'missing something' in his performances and he immediately recognized it was exactly what Lara could do so well, to bring genuine emotion into whatever she sings. They became friends and are still very close friends to this day. One fun video that is nice to see (it's on you tube) is to see Lara pick up the phone (yes, a land phone) at home, and call Dimash to wish him a "Happy Birthday". Lara's husband was in the background drying dishes or something and it's the most beautifully sung "Happy Birthday" I have ever heard.
Cedric, how do you find time to do all that you do? As they say on the street, "You are a piece of work!" (Of course I know the answer to my question. You love what you do and why would you ever want to slow down? 🙂)

19 seconds by my count. The Queen of Speech Singing, American Icon Dolly Parton mastered the craft. Lara has covered 1 song & picked one of the library of songs (4,000+ in the 1970’s). Elvis Presley, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, the group Heart, Whitney Houston, and many other artist that pick through her library of songs that she gifted to young artist. Vastly different singer’s with different styles. Both are song writer’s , Lara has a composer Igor that she works exclusively with now. ❤️✌🏼

Note: Dimash learned from Lara, by watching her on tv and TH-cam since he was a kid, he said this himself. When the first met in person, he almost cried. He said that she is his idol and one of his greatest inspiration to become who he is currently.
She was trained to be an Opera Singer for 10 years (from her 8 to 18 years) at The Royal Conservatory from Belgium, she also plays piano and guitar, she composed 90% of her repertoire in 4 languages as well. She hasn't stopped to have vocal classes since her 8 years old, she keeps having vocal lessons 3 times per week and she practices her voice at least 2 hours everyday, she proudly speakers about this in many interviews. She decided to compose and performe Pop songs instead of classical one's. She's fluently in 4 languages and has already sang in 12 languages perfectly. She is a master in terms of breathing control and support, resonance, vowels pronunciation and emotion delivering / acting while performing. Thank you for this reaction. ❤ Hugs from Brazil.
Ps: Lara's is currently on tour and also being a vocal coach at the The Voice Kids in France. She has been working as vocal coach at the The Voice (both adult and kids) in France and Canada for many many years now. She is know as THE RING in France and Canada.

For those of us that have known of her for years, it's such a buzz when watching a new 'review' video by vocal coaches. We already know by the end of the video how blown away the coach is going to be ahead of time. Also she is the only one that I know that has created so many reviews by vocal coaches due to the heavy requests they get. I find myself now seeking out the dozens and dozens of these review videos just for the fun of watching their jaws drop in awe, or when they so often actually break down in tears - happens all the time. She would be dynamite in musical theatre, bet you'd kill for her to be in Anastasia? What other artist has that effect ? Imagine how difficult it would be to WRITE and sing great songs/lyrics in a foreign language as she does (e.g. in flawless English etc). Try listening/reviewing her 'Adagio' or 'Broken Vow' or 'Caruso' - unbeatable.

The ebb and flow of the song is actually also an indication of the feelings it portrays - when you are in a bad situation, when you are sick, you get bursts of energy, of anger, when you want to DO something, but your energy is so low that those moments don't last long and you drop back into exhaustion/complacency.

    Translation of Voilá:
    Listen to me
    Me, the wannabe singer
    Talk about me
To your love ones , to your friends
Tell them about the girl with the dark eyes and crazy dreams
Me, what I want is to write stories that will reach you
    That’s all
There you go, there you go, there you go
    here is who I am
Here I am even if stripped bare, I’m afraid, yes
Here I am in the noise
    And in the silence
    Look at me
Or at least what’s left of it
    Look at me
    Before I hate myself
What can I say to you, that the lips of another won’t tell you
It’s not much, but all I have
I put it there. That's it
There you go, there you go, there you go
    here is who I am
Here I am even if stripping it's over
It’s my face, it’s my cry
    Here I am, too bad
There you go, there you go, there you go
    It’s right here
    Me, my dream, my desire
How I die, how I laugh
Here I am in the noise
    And in the silence
    Do not go
I beg you to stay for a long time
It might not save me, no
But to do without you, I don’t know how
Love me like you love a friend
    Who goes away forever
I want to be loved, because I don’t know how to love the shape of me.
There you go, there you go, there you go
    here is who I am
Here I am even if laying bare I understood
Here I am in the noise
    And in fury too
    finally look at me
And my eyes and my hands
    Everything I have is here
It’s my face, it’s my cry
Here I am, here I am, here I am

Which she uses to do very often in HUGES places just to deliver more emotion and show case her vocal resonance tho. The audience goes CRAZY everytime she does this.

Lara’s own song Broken Vow should be your next reaction and then Caruso after that! Both incredible, from the same concert ‘From Lara with Love’ of the performance you just watched. Every song from that concert is just amazing! Lara is fantastic!

The thing is, she is very much in the tradition of French Chanson in that song. Like Brel, Aznavour things like that. It's a story that she is telling. She is living it and acting it. But she has such amazing range and an insane voice. She reigns it to act a story. It's not a song, even. It's not a pretty song with beautiful voice. It's a story.. she just happens to sing it.

      It's not a single.. it's a chanson.
