    Formed in 1969, ZZ Top have gone on to become one of the most influential rock bands of all time. With total worldwide album sales of over 50 million, the band's ongoing influence is also evidenced in modern streaming platforms such as Spotify, where they have almost 4.6 million monthly listeners, and 162 million streams on their top song, "La Grange". It's safe to say that the influence of ZZ top is deeply rooted within the very foundations of rock 'n' roll, and shows no evidence of going anywhere anytime soon.

      This is kinda long but felt it would be helpful to someone looking for a Megadeth type of sound
      The gear I used to get a nice Megadeth style sound was a
      Marshall MG15CF Gain:7 Bass:10 Mid:8 Treb:10
      Tube Screamer TS9 (Dave uses 808)
      Drive:Off/9 o’clock Tone:Noon Level:3 o’clock/full.
      And the guitar I got closest sound with was my Vintage V100 LP copy. I love that guitar. Great sound and feel for a copy. That may vary with each guitar so be cautious. But mine is great. I set my amp and Ts up that way just noodling and got very Mustaine vibes from it so I looked up Dave’s settings and that’s a common setting he uses. Nicer amps and a ts808 or similar pedal will probably sound a little nicer but it sounded great with what I used. The most expensive part would probably be the v100 as they have different styles that vary in price. That got me a very similar sound to The System Has Failed. Sorry if this was too long but I just wanted to share it

    We need more Sound Like episodes that involve the bass. You can only go so far with just the guitar. Adding the bass really takes it the extra level. You guys already do dual guitars a lot and you already add bass for context a lot. Why not just go all the way with the bass?

      @jonathanmatthews6478 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whilst this is a cool idea, most bands they cover dont have a whole lot of diversity when it comes to bass equipment. Every episode would be "they use a p bass and an svt" or "we couldnt get all the special stuff they use in their rig." Imagine trying to do tool on a budget? not really gonna happen. I asked for this a couple years back but i quickly realised that all the tones you could need could be covered (on a budget) can be done with a fender rumble and a darkglass vintage od lmao

    • @martinhroch344
      @martinhroch344 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@atamize J-Bass. When you want a P-Bass-esque tone, just roll off the bridge pickup volume. But you can't get a clanging slap tone without a bridge pickup on P-Bass.
      IMHO J-Bass is more versatile.

      @@way2sh0rt07grad The reason I was saying supposedly is because I've heard that he's sorta notorious about lying about his gear. I'm gonna tell you this, it eclipses the without busting by a mile
    I Gotsta Get Paid - a bit too loud but the tone was there, it was really close so i give it a 4.25/5
    La Grange - very close but i think the distortion was not fizzy enough, i give it a 4/5 close but not perfect
    Sharp Dressed Man - the original was more boxy, bass was 100% but guitar this was a bit more modern sounding so 4/5
    Gimmie All Your Loving - once again the original was more boxy but it was super close so i give it a 4.25/5 again
    keep up the good work

    So here's the thing. Tried a bit of "sounds like ZZ-top" at home using kit that is nothing like what BFG uses. Guitar was a Squier Tele standard, amp is a HiWatt DR103 (so nothing like a marshall or Billy's Magnatones), strings on the guitar are GHS boomers 10.5-50 - pretty far away from Billy's 7s. The trick was to use a valve o/d pedal with a big muff in front of it. Max out the gain on the valve o/d and use the muff to knock off a bit of top end and bingo. Got the tones off Rhythmeen for days. Course I have fingers like meat hooks so I'm never going to match Mr Gibbons' deft touch and it's probably why I get away with the Boomers but the secret is all in the valve gain. HiWatt isn't much help in the dirt arena since it just gets louder instead of overdriving. Almost impossible to get it to break up even with the inputs wound right up and by the time you do start to get some crunch you've liquified your internal organs. The little valve o/d and the muff are doing all the work. The rest of the gear isn't that critical. I believe Billy get's a lot of his tone from a Marshall SL100 with an EQ to smooth out the differences between guitars. You could probably give him a Rickenbacker and he could still get that tone. Harder to match the phrasing and his timing though. It's all in the fingers as always.

  • @colinmcdonald7591
    @colinmcdonald7591 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome! The tone was much closer on this one than on the without busting version. A bit more top end and sizzle and you would have nailed the majority of the eliminator tone. In fact, with the edge control a little over half way up it was just about perfect. If you had used a single '57 into some vintage compressors and preamps you likely would have been able to clone the tone.

    Penn Jilette told a story on his podcast about how Billy Gibbons overheard someone talking after a ZZ Top show about how he only sounds great due to his expensive equipment. So BG sent one of the roadies to the local guitar shop to buy the cheapest guitar in the store. And he still sounded great.
