I had such a blast doing this. I can't thank Clappo enough for his late 80s stuff - that was such inspirational music for me. Cheers to Matt & Rabea for letting me crash the show.
CaptAnderton i watch all your vids and ive noticed you gotten better as a player. your more relaxed and let it flow and this vid is a prime example of it. keep up the great vids and keep up the relaxed natural playing.

thanks for your answer, i never played with a mid boost neither i played a pro junior with single coils, i only have humbuckers so i don't know, but i will check it out
You should do a spin off "Sounds Like..." series where you only use the classic vibe Strat and the Marshall DSL40C and try and see how many artists sounds you can come close to.
Eric is really basic ,, know what your playing really well ,, superb vibrato , note selection & phrasing & Time ,, you will sound like him no matter what ,, just master those !!!
Good episode! I think it'd be really cool to do see a *by busting* and *without busting* in the same episode so people can get a feel for the difference these rigs make when trying to get the same tone. Just a suggestion. Cheers! Oh PS - you guys still wanting to do a redo of John Frusciante?
This was another good choice! But you know why I'm here... Sound like Johnny Marr! (It would also be cool to do a proper Sound like The Smiths, since Andy Rourke was an awesome bassist with a unique tone, which was primarily solid state)
jordan74 Yeah, Radiohead would be cool. They'd probably need to find a Fender American Standard Telecaster, maybe Vox AC30 and whatever pedals Jonny Greenwood uses (I think he has a pitch shifter for his solo on Paranoid Android but I can't really tell)
abit too much gain to my ears... that being said, my favorite Clapton era was the astonishingly short 2 year run of Cream. YES, Cream were only together for TWO YEARS 1966-1968 (although a final album was released in 1969 after the band had already called it quits), which shows how amazing they were considering they broke up 49 years ago(!!!) and they are still talked about & influencing musicians to this day.
I make Clapton's 'great' era as even shorter. From 'I feel free' through to 'Disraeli Gears'. He started to go downhill right after that. Which means that this demo is pointless to me, to get the Clapton sound you need a 58-60's Les Paul (Although I did get pretty close with an Epiphone Sheraton and a Musiwewe Purple/Blue pedal right out of the box. Unfortunately after someone touched the knobs I lost it...).
I also think it would be awesome to do a "Sounds Like Clapton by busting the Bank",obviously featuring The Captain...but I think it would be really nice if either Matt or Rabea did a late '60's era rig and the other one a more Fendery sort of thing...Cheers!!!
Clapton live from hyde Park 96,97 was the greatest concerts ever, i got to see him in 98 in Phoenix, was also one of the greatest concerts ever, blackie was screaming, couldn't belive the bends he was doing, had a big screen each side of the stage zoomed in on his fingers, you had to come out of your seat, chill down your spine.
EC is indeed a strat guy now but he was a les paul guy in the beginning and sg. He also used to be a AC-30 back in the old old days. Modified a custom Marshall "bluesbreaker" amplifier too. He favoured the Vox wah. Used a slide on occasian. His strats had a mid boost effect built into his Strats.
Good job, guys. Lord knows it's not easy doing your usual gig with your boss. He thanked you for inviting him so many times that I have the sinking suspicion perhaps he invited himself.
Whilst I love the sound/tone that Lee is getting here, with the mid-boost and having bought new pickups, I was gobsmacked by the Clapton Strat sound he got in the 2013 video referred to here ('Sound Like Eric Clapton for Under £1,000 - (Chappers Favourite Sound Like So Far)'), and the ingenuity with which he approximated that sound (quite closely). In fact, I was so impressed that I went out last week and bought the Spark Boost and GE 7 Equalizer pedals that he used to get the Clapton Strat tone in the video mentioned above. Using those has been a revelation, and even better, has enabled me to get that Clapton sound I have been after for so long. And those pedals cost me just over a hundred quid, secondhand, so that is a much cheaper route to go (even if you buy pedals new), and gives one a much more versatile set up than having to mod a guitar to achieve the sound. Thanks Captain Lee.
I've been watching the Capt play for years anow and every. single. video. he absolutely nails whatever he's playing. I think he's my favorite "not famous" guitar player. Even if you add the famous players, he's still right up there.
maexle01 it's all in the fingers with joe, you need his fingers to get his sound no matter what guitar you use. His rig is super simple when he plays live, two bassmans and two twins with an overrated special and a wah. Oh and a hell of a lot of vintage guitars
Clapton is not a guitarist I'm a huge huge fan of and I would never want to sound like him personally. But they did very very well on the sound here and it's always really great to see someone who is a proper fan of the artist showing their real knowledge and skill. Well done Cappers!
Squier Classic Vibe Tele - 417.00 Vox AC15 w/Celestion Greenback - 580.00 Boss SD1 - 45.00 Digitech Whammy Ricochet - 129.00 EHX Nano Small Stone - 61.00 Boss RE20 Space Echo - 199.00 Total - 1431.00 I'd skip out on the Carbon Copy since the RE20 that he actually DOES use is in budget and the Small Stone is more of a staple sound than the envelope filter, and the ricochet is the cheapest way to get a whammy in your rig. It might not nail everything 100% bang on but it'd get you pretty close
I did the same thing with my Squire Vintage Modified Strat! I added the Clapton electronics and some nice scooped-sounding pickups and it ended up being a Mayer/Clapton hybrid. Sounds monstrous to this day!
I'm assuming you're just being sarcastic and you do actually know about Lee Anderton who is the owner/operator of Anderton's Music Co and is it a LOT of the videos on the channel, just not so much THIS series.
Jalan Hart my favourite Clapton was always the early Cream stuff, just at the beginning of his discovery of woman tone, and his SG and Firebird plugged in Marshall stacks. Still love the slowhand stuff though.
25 db is over 4 times as loud, and about 300 times the power (voltage times current). It's more than putting two Echoplex preamp pedals together (200 times the power). It's about the same as a dimed Spark Boost (about 300 times, too), and is over twice the power of a EP booster (which is 100 times the power). That thing is a monster.
"Wonderful Tonight" is my parent's wedding song. Great vid, and great tones! Would love to see a Sounds like Weezer with/without busting the bank, next!
As a huge guitar fan and player, watching your videos and gear demoing, I've always assumed the captain was holding back a little with his guitar playing a little. Now after watching this (not a huge Eric Clapton fan) it seems the captain came out of his shell and just let loose with good feeling and soul. To me, that's what a cracking guitarist is. Well done guys.
I have some serious suggestions/proper challenges for you: Geordie Walker: Killing Joke Robert Smith: The Cure Billy Duffy: The Cult 3 hugely influential guitarists, good range of effect useage and style yet not your standard canon of players. I am certainly not complaining with what you have done so far, some very interesting choices but I personally would enjoy seeing your take on some more alternative players. Just a thought, keep up the good work lads.
I saw tons of the captains videos. But i never recognized him so much as a wonderful Guitar player like in this Video. Great and tasty playing. Thanks!
Awesome job as always guys!!! Great choice on getting The Captain in to do this one. Like Rabea said, I couldn't think of anyone else better to do it. Eric Clapton is a sick blues guitar player and so is Lee.
Bass part (Jack Bruce) (In this video you're using Strat, so lets we all pretend we are recrating Cream's 2005 reunion, shall we?) -For classic Cream we need of course Epiphone EB-3. But we are in 2005 in Royal Albert Hall, we need a fretless Warwick JJ pickup configuration, RB Corvette or Streamer -Hartke Kickback 15, you know, a good sounding amp for a fretless
When I first watched this 8 years ago it confused the heck out of me. I have an EC Strat and the controls are round the other way on the factory bought version…… thanks Lee!
they did Mick Mars from Motley Crue recently! but if they're doing metallica with unlimited budget for James: ESP Snakebyte,Truckster or Vulture, Mesa Boogie head and cab or Roland Jazz Chorus, with an overdrive pedal for Kirk: ESP KH, since they don't stock Randall use either Marshall JVM/JCM or another Mesa Boogie amp, some chorus and the Dunlop kirk Hammett Wah
At the time ('85-'89), he mostly used his (slightly old) Musicman HD heads and cabs or (for the (rare) bigger gigs his full Bradshaw multi components racks. This I got from a Clapton special in a Dutch guitar magazine from 1990.
hahaha love the captain jumping into this! would be funny one day if you had a committee meeting/roundtable about the ins and out's of the technical/aesthetic side of star guitarists rig inc bernie marsden and chappers (clapton if he lives around the corner) :) haha
Getting a 50s Classic Vibe delivered to me today. Now I know exactly what I want to play first. I need an amp upgrade but just a head. Might look into a bassbreaker then. There has to be a reason Bryan Setzer has used one for years. Though its said he uses the specific year due to the rectifier inside
They could stretch to a more expensive guitar in this one but here's my rig Gretsch G5420 - £786 (since they can't afford a G6120 Brian Setzer Hotrod without busting the bank) Fender Blues JR III - £565 (since they can't afford a Fender Bassman head and cab on this budget) TC Electronic Hall of Fame Mini - £85 that should be it since he's not a massive pedal user he only has a tiny bit of reverb and delay so use the amp reverb with a cheap delay pedal and you'll have it this came in at £1436
I really want you guys to do a Sound Like Cream! It is just so different to the modern Clapton thing, I think it deserves a go. And right now, with the new range of SGs and the Marshall Studio range, you could do a really cool version of By busting.
Lee your tone and feel is awesome in all your videos and if you look at Chappers when you play you would see that he loves your tone too. Thanks for all of your videos and Inspiration, keep up the good work :-)
I had such a blast doing this. I can't thank Clappo enough for his late 80s stuff - that was such inspirational music for me. Cheers to Matt & Rabea for letting me crash the show.

You should do a spin off "Sounds Like..." series where you only use the classic vibe Strat and the Marshall DSL40C and try and see how many artists sounds you can come close to.
Yes!
totally!
Anyone
I think Dave Simpson has a series of videos on his channel where he uses an Orange amp to get a bunch of Artists' sounds.
Eric is really basic ,, know what your playing really well ,, superb vibrato , note selection & phrasing & Time ,, you will sound like him no matter what ,, just master those !!!
You're definitely going to need to do a "by busting the bank" for clapton in the future!
psychofmse I second this idea.
psychofmse with all eras of clapton!
Lol, £4000 for a Soldano alone.
This tone ☺️
That'd be awesome
What if one of you guys "busted the bank" while the other stayed on budget as a comparison?
pickledblues they've kinda done that, but not in the same video
I feel like Clapton is a perfect candidate for BY busting the bank
You owe us a sound like CREAM then...
Yup
Yes please
@@floydharper4653 do it!
Bad Love is such an awesome guitar song. Clapton is a fairly simple player but makes the instrument sing with passion. Can never get enough EC.
The Captain nailed Layla spot on!
Got to do a Mark Knopfler sounds like!!
th-cam.com/video/aT4jJ1nCEWY/w-d-xo.html You are welcome :)
Awesome guys!! I don't know how the hell that one slipped by without me seeing it!!
sean toner the bank is broken just from your suggestion
Just a guitar, without any effects 😊
Good episode! I think it'd be really cool to do see a *by busting* and *without busting* in the same episode so people can get a feel for the difference these rigs make when trying to get the same tone. Just a suggestion. Cheers!
Oh PS - you guys still wanting to do a redo of John Frusciante?
Sound Mind If I had access to all of that gear. I would do this for free. Let alone do it as a job.
some people do like staring in cameras and talking to themselves....
I feel so sorry for Matt when everyone keeps cutting him off when he tries to speak. Story of my life lol
This was another good choice! But you know why I'm here...
Sound like Johnny Marr!
(It would also be cool to do a proper Sound like The Smiths, since Andy Rourke was an awesome bassist with a unique tone, which was primarily solid state)
You read mind!
12ealDeal yesyesyesyesyes
12ealDeal Marr is essential
I love seeing Captain going back to what he loves - classic blues/rock.
Sound like Mick Mars! Huge tones for a one-guitarist band
That's true!
KnapfordMaster98 yessssss!!!!!
Yes sir! I second that! I'd like to see them do Jake E. Lee. By far the best tone out of Ozzy's guitarists.
pfff, sif better than Rhoads...wake up to yourself son
Looks like u got ur wish
I would like to see a, "sound like Zappa."
Great video, love seeing the Captain here. Would love to hear a Sounds Like Duane Allman! His Fillmore tone is probably the greatest rock tone ever.
Some suggestions
- The Beatles
- Primus
- Van Halen
- ZZ Top
- Chuck Berry
- Aerosmith
- Smashing Pumpkins
- Radiohead
- KISS
- Queen
Andrew Pappas Radiohead
yes!! yes!!!
jordan74 Yeah, Radiohead would be cool. They'd probably need to find a Fender American Standard Telecaster, maybe Vox AC30 and whatever pedals Jonny Greenwood uses (I think he has a pitch shifter for his solo on Paranoid Android but I can't really tell)
I don't think that the American standard could keep them in the budget. Either Mexican or Classic Vibe, depending on the effects budget.
Dodge Hattrup You never know
I'd love to have a Rabea Bobble Head I could connect to my metronome - would make my sessions much groovier! :P
Lmao

Lee Anderton, he owns the store.

He's the Captain. ;-)
I've listened to alot of clapton and my favorite Clapton tone is the 2005 Cream reunion. It just has the right amount of crunch with the right tone...
Jalan Hart my favourite Clapton was always the early Cream stuff, just at the beginning of his discovery of woman tone, and his SG and Firebird plugged in Marshall stacks. Still love the slowhand stuff though.
Do a sound like Duane allman pleeeeeeeease

The solo to Bad Love still gets me. Definitely in my top 3 solo's of all time - tone, feel...!
Agreed one of my favourite solos by Clapton
The minute Wonderful Tonight started in the intro, I knew the Captain was playing. Perfect choice. And you got a great tone.

I have some serious suggestions/proper challenges for you:
Geordie Walker: Killing Joke
Robert Smith: The Cure
Billy Duffy: The Cult
3 hugely influential guitarists, good range of effect useage and style yet not your standard canon of players. I am certainly not complaining with what you have done so far, some very interesting choices but I personally would enjoy seeing your take on some more alternative players.

Awesome job as always guys!!! Great choice on getting The Captain in to do this one. Like Rabea said, I couldn't think of anyone else better to do it. Eric Clapton is a sick blues guitar player and so is Lee.
To get his current live tone you need to buy a used Derek Trucks.
I agree Bea ,the SG era is best. Great playing by the captain ! that thing does sound good (classic vibe)
Nice job guys!! And the new guy did a decent job! ;-)
Modding lower end guitars seems like a great way to make this series even more interesting (obviously don't go crazy, but where it would make sense!)
Sounds like:
Buckethead
Devin Townsend
Radiohead
The Used
The Cars
Any of those please? :)
DasOmen02 radiohead
Buckethead and Devin Townsend! And is that a Soen album cover I see...?! ;)
i thought that said Pete Townshend for a moment, now i am upseet
but a sound like The Who would be a good video

Will York Music but they haven't do by busting the bank yet, they only did it Without busting the bank

they did Mick Mars from Motley Crue recently! but if they're doing metallica with unlimited budget
for James: ESP Snakebyte,Truckster or Vulture, Mesa Boogie head and cab or Roland Jazz Chorus, with an overdrive pedal
for Kirk: ESP KH, since they don't stock Randall use either Marshall JVM/JCM or another Mesa Boogie amp, some chorus and the Dunlop kirk Hammett Wah

JOHN FRUSCIANTE:
a) without busting the bank redo
b) BY busting the bank

Getting a 50s Classic Vibe delivered to me today. Now I know exactly what I want to play first. I need an amp upgrade but just a head. Might look into a bassbreaker then. There has to be a reason Bryan Setzer has used one for years. Though its said he uses the specific year due to the rectifier inside
Brilliant! Now how about a Sound Like Brian Setzer w/o Busting The Bank please?
They could stretch to a more expensive guitar in this one but here's my rig
Gretsch G5420 - £786 (since they can't afford a G6120 Brian Setzer Hotrod without busting the bank)
Fender Blues JR III - £565 (since they can't afford a Fender Bassman head and cab on this budget)
TC Electronic Hall of Fame Mini - £85
that should be it since he's not a massive pedal user he only has a tiny bit of reverb and delay so use the amp reverb with a cheap delay pedal and you'll have it
this came in at £1436
I really want you guys to do a Sound Like Cream! It is just so different to the modern Clapton thing, I think it deserves a go. And right now, with the new range of SGs and the Marshall Studio range, you could do a really cool version of By busting.
Sound like Van Halen please !!!
