    Hi Justin, thank you so much for sharing this useful video. I love it!!
    Can you please help me? I just painted my nightstands with Annie Sloan los white color and I clear wax them. Can I use polyacrilic on top to give more durability? Thanks in advance for your advice 🙏🙏🙏

    • @MissJustinaMarie

      Amparo, thank you so much! 🙏🏼🤗🌹
      Yes, I think you can put a thin layer of poly acrylic over the top, in fact, if that were my project, that is exactly what I would do; put a very thin layer over the table top of the nightstand. The legs should be fine with just the wax, but you might want a little more durability on the top.
      I hope that works out for you! If you have time, please let me know if it does/doesn’t. I pinned your comment to the top of the comments section so others can see.☺️
      Hope you have a good evening!🙏🏼

      MissJustinaMarie Hello Justina. Thank you so much for this much needed informative video! I love the ease and durability of polycrylic, but I keep hearing different advice regarding its use over chalk paint and when to apply it. Some people say that you can ONLY use it BEFORE applying your clear wax, NEVER OVER WAX, whereas others advise you should only apply polycrylic over wax only after the wax has cured for several weeks...and why would anyone even think of laying wax over polycrylic anyway? Such confusion. What do recommend?

      Hi I just came across your Channel and the video that you showed about what kind of top coat to put over chalk paint definitely help I was debating back and forth with crazy watching all these videos. And I definitely will do the polycrylic for sure. I bought a furniture set really cheap on Amazon Marketplace in amazing condition. But I will admit that's a big project. I did paint it with a light gray chalk paint and it came out beautiful I put two coats. Now comes the dilemma I want to give it a little bit of antique and look to it so I'm thinking about doing a glaze maybe in Black. What I'm having a hard time with do I glaze first and then seal or seal then glaze. I seen all different ways and I just want to get this perfect. Thank you so much in advance and now I am subscribed to your Channel and I love it

    I’m glad I found you! I just painted a chair with the rust oleum chalk paint in aged gray and it came out really well. I’m now about to do a small dresser that is in my entryway and I wanted to wax that because I think it won’t get any thing hot put on it. You answered my question about the wax top coat better than people at the stores- ya hit the nail on the head- especially mentioning the pros vs the cons and it wasn’t cons as in “this just sucks” but legit examples as to where this top coat could be a problem, or not benefit your hard work on the surface. GREAT video

    I love the AS lacquer. Yes, it's expensive. I've used it around on my projects that need extra protection, like tops of window sills, or on light switch plates. Never would do a whole large piece of furniture, just the top.
    You can water it down, like chalk paint, and use in a sprayer.
    AS has a matte and gloss lacquer.

    Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I’ve watched other videos but this one finally answered all the questions I have!!
    I appreciate the knowledge and the lessons learned you share from all your experience- you mention durability, wait times, heat and cold, resistance, different furniture type pros and cons- it’s like you read our minds!
    I’ve been wondering what to finish my side table top with, while keeping in mind that I won’t be able to fix it if anything goes wrong or move from my bed since I’m having a surgery I’m having in a couple days. I anticipate lots of wear and tear and hot and cold temperatures on my side table. Before watching this video I actually used the same rust oleum cream chiffon that you mention using (way cheaper than Annie sloans) and I also bought the Annie Sloan clear gloss lacquer for surface. She advertised it as the ultimate wear and tear topcoat- better than any matte- (ie floors etc) but when I put it on my other chalk painted items it dulled the color from cream to yellow and made it look so shiny and slimy. I don’t want to risk it with my table top. I’m going to either purchase the rustoleum matte finish like you recommend OR what the top pinned comment says about clear wax and a polyacrilic on top of I can find it. Thanks again- I’ve subscribed and am sure I’ll binge watch your videos during my recovery😊

    Great video. In my opinion, although I have never used any chalk paint, I think Annie Sloan's product line is too expensive for the average Joe. I'm sure it's fantastic but come on, don't be greedy and unreasonably priced for a.product that isn't any different ingredient wise than any other out on the market, especially since there are other options out there in the chalk paint / sealing industry. I love your style and how informative you are. Wish you could help me decorate my house...lol. Thanks for the video . Take care!!

      Hi, Jackie! Hope you're doing well this evening. Sorry I am so late in responding...I got a little behind while I was sick. Please forgive me!
      Yes, I totally agree, AS is expensive. It's a great product - the best chalk paint, IMO - but the price is too high for a lot of people, especially if you're doing a small project or just testing out chalk paint. That's precisely why I did the comparison video between AS and Rustoleum. Rustoleum makes a good product for half the price. Is it as good as AS? No. But it's a cost-friendly alternative.
      Thank you so much for your encouragement and your feedback concerning my videos. I really appreciate it! Means a lot. xo! ❤️

    I did a TV wood tray in gray chalk, with flour sack stripes and a large stamped flower in white. When I went to paint on Rustoleum chalked topcoat, the gray smudged over my flower & stripes! What a mess, and despite my attempts to re-do it, I'm not happy. If I do this again, after I recover, I will do a light spray topcoat before painting on a topcoat. I have other projects in mind for the gray chalk, and wonder if I do a wax over, will this smudge too?

    I just painted my old vanity in my bathroom with Annie Sloane's chalk paint. I had no idea Lowe's carried chalk paint. It was pricey and the woman told me the wax was the best way to seal it. OMG. Unfortunately, the smell of the wax overwhelmed me yesterday and I just couldn't continue. Annie Sloane's wax carries a very strong odor. I actually got a headache. I went to Lowe's and it was suggested I get the Minwax Polycrylic, which is water based. My question is. Is it going to affect the chalk paint? Will it strip it? And yes. Annie's Sloane's Lacquer is ridiculously priced. I would check to see if it has the same ingredients as the less expensive one you bought. Great video!

    Hi Justina! Your video just popped up in my suggested feed and it is great! I agree about the cost of the lacquer. I paid $55 (gulp) a couple years ago and haven't used it much. Maybe my local retailer was price gouging. Lol. Polycrylic is great. My only issue with it is that it dries SO quickly, it will leave brush marks when you have large surfaces to cover, like a table top. It does better when sprayed on, imho. Getting out my sprayer is a pain, though. Great, informative video! Love! ❤ Xoxoxo

    Thank you so much. This was the excat video I was looking for ! So informative. Which sealer do you recco for a dining table for long term durability ? Polycrylic ? and what brand ?

      Hi, Ann! Thank you for watching! For a dining table I would do the legs in a wax and the top in a water-based polycrylic, so long as the color you are painting isn't dark. You don't want a milky finish! Minwax is fine, any of the usual suspects at Lowe's or HD! Just apply it really thin. Hope that helps and works for you!

    Ahh I was redoing my kitchen cabinets and on the inside I used chalked paint, and at the time I didn’t know it needed a top coat so now it’s kinda stained and I have to go in with another layer and this time I will try a top coat. Which do you prefer for inside cabinets?

    I watched this video just in time. I just started painting old furniture and making new. Just bought a big dresser I am going to be painting in rustoleum chalky finish charcoal. After watching this video what would be the best thing to seal it with if I don't want to wax it? I'm new at all this so I dunno the waxing scares me and seems more time consuming. If wax is the best option however, should I use clear? Any tips?

    Im so glad I came across your video, I have just finished two end tables for my Livingroom. I used the wax to seal them but now I think I want a more durable sealer for the top. I have used a dark brown paint so I think the polyurethane might be best but can it go over the wax that I already applied?

    • @MissJustinaMarie
      @MissJustinaMarie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, April! Thank you very much for your message and for watching. Is lightly sand the wax, like super light as not to disturb the paint underneath, wipe it down, then apply the polyurethane. However, end tables don’t typically get a ton of wear and tear. What about just applying a thing coat on the tops?

    Your video was very informative thank you so much ❤. I do have a question for you though. I'm trying to decide what to do for my kitchen cabinets, they are painted white already from the previous owners and now they are yellowing. I'm redoing them soon in chalk paint in a teal on the bottom and white on top. Just can't really decide on top coats. I've never done this type of project before lol. I really want to stay true to the color though, but then again I want it to last and not yellow. Any advice for me? It's just really hard to decide and I really want it to look great now and say 5 years from now.

      Angela, thank you for your sweet message!💕 I would say, if you don’t have small kids or anyone in your house who is “rough,” then just go with wax. Wax brings out the most true and beautiful color. You can use multiple thin coats of AS wax. Another option is to look into AS varnish. It’s one of her newer projects and I have not used it, however, AS herself is an artist and cares so much about the colors being true. So I would think that her varnish is meant to enhance the color of the chalk paint yet have additional durability. But, I cannot day for sure because is not tried that product yet.
      Another option is polycrylic. You would have to go very, very thin on the application though, as to avoid any discoloring. I would stay away from polyurethane completely.
      I need to repaint my cabinets since I did them in 2016. So they lasted about 4 years. But, I have a toddler now and my cabinets are really cheap and crappy, tbh...so I didn’t have the best canvas with which to work, lol.
      I hope that information is helpful to you!☺️

      @@MissJustinaMarie thank you for replying to my message ❤ my cabinets are also cheap lol.. my house was built in the early 80s and I guess metal cabinets were all the rage idk. I'll do as you suggest but I probably won't be doing anything with a AS products.. all of her authorized sellers are currently closed in my area plus her products are really really expensive 😟. Have a wonderful day and happy mother's day 🤗

    Would you say that the water based polyurethane also usually yellows with age like the oil based does? I’m painting my bedroom furniture in Rustoleum Aged Gray chalk paint. The post I first saw it on recommended Polycrylic but I’m have a really hard time finding it so I picked up the water based polyurethane thinking that it would work okay. I’ve never painted furniture before. It looks nice so far but I don’t want to ruin it because I used the wrong sealant.

    I have a question about mixing brands. I used a White Linen Rustoleum on my china cabinet and 5 days ago I waxed it with Annie Sloan clear wax and I buffed it well. It still feels waxy and not smooth withthe wax didn't apply well and I went back to feel my china cabinet and noticed it doesn't feel any different after 5 days.

    Hi,
    I’ve used Rustolium clear coat to seal my chalk painted project. You’re wright. It’s milky on a darker paint…
    I’ve done 1 coat and when I came back for my 2e coat, there were some uneven marks on my piece. That were not there before!
    Do you know why? Thank you for your help and for this video.

    I’m new to chalk painting, and I’m going to do a laminate dresser. Besides washing the dresser, what else should I do to prep it? Will I need to use a topcoat?

    • @MissJustinaMarie
      @MissJustinaMarie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Beatrice! Welcome to chalk painting! I hope you will enjoy your first project. To answer your question, for nearly any surface type, all you have to do is clean the surface to prep it...then you just paint over the surface. There are a couple of exceptions, the biggest one being mahogany or cherry-stained wood, and that is because there are tannins in the wood that will bleed through the chalk paint layers. In those cases, you want to prime first. But for most cases, the whole point of chalk paint is to skip the priming/prepping part and get straight to painting. I hope that helps! Have a good evening and thank you very much for watching!

    I just painted my kitchen table with rustoleum chalked white. I then used the clear matte coat and it turned yellow. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @MissJustinaMarie
      @MissJustinaMarie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I’m sorry to hear that happened. I think you probably applied too thick a coat. When I talk about a thin coat, I mean a super thin, barely there coat, not the same thing as a thin coat of paint.
      I suggest painting a new layer of chalk paint right over the matte finish, then try a water based polycrylic....and make a really really thin coat. Or, if you want to give the Rustoleum another shot, use that again but do a patch test in a corner, very very thin.
      Hope that helps!💙

    • @MissJustinaMarie

      Hi, Laura! I would definitely go with polyurethane (if you can stand the odor) or polycrylic. I'd say steer away from wax for the bathroom. I hope that's helpful, and thank you very much for your feedback!
