    I have seen a lot of tutorials on painting fabric furniture. My conclusion is that it is way too much work for a chair you can't use everyday. I also worry about the wax warming and creating residue on peoples clothing.

    I’ve seen painted chairs like this before in thrift stores, and in the up-cycled sections of antique stores. They look terrible, and is not my cup of tea. The fabric feels almost like cheap vinyl, It is not comfortable to sit in because the fabric feels hot, and does not breathe. In a short time the paint cracks. People are always looking for a quick, cheap way to “jazz-things-up”, and ultimately ruin them. I like the color, but I would rather take the time to teach myself some proper reupholstering techniques. If something is worth doing; it’s worth doing well.

      I love the look of this chair & the process, but if someone is wearing white clothes, can they sit on this without having either wax or some of the color stain their white clothes? I’m only asking cos everyone I’ve seen that paints the fabric on chairs, usually sits on them while wearing dark jeans or just darker coloured clothing! Does anyone have experience with this please?

    • @retoldbyrae
      @retoldbyrae 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Adding a professional wax over the paint will keep it softer and more flexible, but yes the wax needs to "cure" for at least 45 days in my opinion! I've tried this before, using Annie Sloan wax and it will leave residue if you sit on it before its cured !

    I have painted a lot of fabric (and learned a lot along the way). Don’t be afraid to do it on chairs you use every day because they wear extremely well. Also try it with an all in one paint ( like DB’s Silk line) and you don’t need water and the fabric is much softer when you are done. The older the fabric, the more it will accept the paint evenly (and you may want to add a stencil or stripes on top, if it’s a problem) . Your chair turned out so lovely and the gold leaf is perfect. Good luck on your opening 🎉

    • @furnitureduchess9103
      @furnitureduchess9103 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@lisajameson1077 it’s basically dyeing the fibers of the fabric. You are not putting a lot of paint on the material so it’s not sitting on top of the fabric where it can transfer to your clothes. I hope that makes sense but an example is when I paint, I need to remember to wear my painting clothes because once I get paint on them, it doesn’t come out (even in the wash). I have a couch that I painted a couple of years ago that we sit on daily and I promise you that the color has never transferred to anything else. Hope that helps!

So after 2 coats and letting them dry I lightly sand papered them. They became soft again and I absolutely love them. They are duck egg so quite light and wear extremely well. I am so impressed and that was about 6 months ago. So for anyone wanting a fabric look and not leather skip the process of the wax and give a fine sand ❤

    What kind of paint are you using?
    Does it dry hard or is the chair still soft after it dries?

    I. Hear fabric softener makes the paint work better and makes fabric softer.

    Can you use a top coat varnish for the gold leaf? Instead of the wax?

    It seems that if you put paint on dirt, it will eventually come off

    Use a fabric medium to keep the fabric on the chair from being hard
