Justina, you are always so thorough when presenting and explaining things! I enjoyed this, especially since I recently “discovered” chalk paint. My husband made a farm table for me at Christmas time, and I painted the bottom part a white washed light blue, and the top creamy white. I used Joanna Gains brand, and her wax to finish. I’m finding though that it does stain through if I get something on it, for example a tea bag. I still love it though! Thank you for this one! Sending love. Xoxox
Hi, Cindy! 🤗 Oh, thank you so much for watching and for your sweet feedback about this video. Sometimes I wonder if I'm being verbose, but as you said, I'm trying to be thorough and give as much information as possible. Your farm table sounds absolutely lovely! I'm not a huge fan of the wax, tbh...it's not very durable. My dining room table needs to be repainted. The wax simply didn't stand up to a toddler. I am currently editing a "part 2" of this video that talks about which finish to choose. Long and short, I'm going to use polycrylic on my dining table as well as my kitchen when I repaint them. I always appreciate your kind words and encouragement, Cindy. Hope you have a beautiful Mother's Day weekend! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi, Julie! That's so good to hear. I'm glad you also had a positive result with Rustoleum. Seems like some people haven't, but I found that if you follow the application instructions, which are different from AS, it works well! Hope you have a lovely evening!
I would love it if you would compared Valspar chalk paint with Annie Sloan's. Lowe's is nearby but to get to an Annie Sloan distributor is quite a drive. Thank you for all your help.
All chalk paints seem to be expensive in Australia, but it’s not stopping us using them. Rust-oleum 887 mls (30 oz) costs Aust $45.50 (USA $35.50) available at Bunnings everywhere.
Thank you so much!!! This was so very helpful! I can’t believe how much further Annie Sloan goes!!! I thought I was saving money using the cheap stuff but to do as many coats really may be the same price if not more! But definitely more time involved going the cheap rout!
Did you use the rustoleum top coat? I’m new at chalk paint and I also bought the top coat and wondering if I should use the top coat or wax. I’ve haven’t used either before... what’s your opinion? Thanks!
Hi, Samantha! Welcome to the wonderful world of chalk paint! 🙌🏼 When I started to use chalk paint there was just Annie Sloan. Now there are so many options...makes it a little difficult to know what’s best, right? So yes, I used the Rustoleum top coat. It was very easy to apply (not wax, rather more like polyurethane.) Very matte, which I liked. It does have an odor. So far so good! As for what you should go with...think about the piece you are painting. Is it a piece that’s going to get a lot of use or dinged up, will it take a beating? I think the wax works great on things like dressers, and tables, frames, But I would definitely not use it on things like kitchen cabinets, or, for example, the top of my dining table, which gets slammed with toddler mess and muck. For items like that, I would go with polycrylic. Does that help? Thanks so much for watching and commenting! ❤️🙏🏼❤️
I found out the hard way that Rust-Oleum needs 3 coats! I did a dining table and was getting frustrated that the whole chalk experience wasn't seeming to be any different than just regular painting (besides the sanding). Thanks for this video - very informative and helpful for my next adventure in up cycling! 👩🔧
Hi, Christina! Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that you were getting frustrated with the chalk paint. I would say, next time you want to try a chalk paint project, give Annie Sloan a try. It's so forgiving and applies like butter (hence the price tag!) But, it's really good stuff. I think that if I'd used Rustoleum chalked paint without having already been familiar with chalk paint, I would have been frustrated, too, especially since it says "one coat application" right on the can.But I think what makes chalk paint super special is when you paint something "weird," like metal or vinyl, and the chalk paint just magically adheres. Anyhoooo, thanks for watching and I'm glad you found this comparison helpful! 💝💝💝
Have you ever compared Amy Howard’s One Step chalk paint? I have heard mixed reviews, and as a novice I would like your opinion. I am going to paint the legs of a kitchen table, the backs and legs of 4 chairs and a hutch with some kind of chalk paint.
Hi, Lin! Thanks so much for watching, and for letting me know. I’m very interested to try Magnolia...I think once I find a nightstand/dresser for my room, I’ll paint it in Magnolia and then do the comparison video.😃 Hope you are doing well! Thanks again for your feedback!💕
Hi, Bev! 💕 Thank you very much for watching and for sharing your feedback. I truly appreciate it! I will absolutely consider doing more comparison videos. I would really like to give Joanna Gaines' chalk paint a try and compare it to Annie Sloan and Rustoleum. I just need to find something else to paint...haha! Thanks again, Bev, and hope you have a great rest of the week! 💕
If you do your kitchen cabinets, please show us your before, during, and after. I would love to do mine, but not sure if I should hire professional painters!
Hi, Sherri! 🤗 Thanks for watching and for your suggestion. I most certainly will show you the process if I repaint them. I filmed myself painting them the first time I painted them using Annie Sloan’s chalk paint. (It’s one of my very first videos, if you want to take a look). I will say that what made it easy for me was that the insides were white to begin with, so I only painted the doors. I think it would have been a lot more difficult had the insides been dark.
MissJustinaMarie - Thank you, I’ll look for that video. I tried painting my bathroom cabinets. They’re a pickled wood, and after 2 or 3 coats of antique white Annie Sloan it still looks like one coat. That’s why I’m cautious to do the entire kitchen! 😍
Hi missJustinamarie. I hope that all is well with you and your family. You never posted anything anymore. I really enjoyed your videos and your great DIY ideas. Are you planning to come back soon?
I tried for the first time Rust Oleum paint for mij closet. It didn't cover a good so I had to use almost 3 cans x € 15,00 and do 2/3 layers. So uin the end I paid € 45,- anyway. I think for me, I will use Annie Sloan in the future 😉
Such an informative video and very well put together. This will be my first time painting furniture (pleather ottoman to match my sofa). There is a boutique near me that sells Annie Sloan, so it may be worth the purchase.
Great video. Thanks for the information. We're going to give this a try on a large wooden head and foot board. You really helped. One question.... what's the font you're using for the titles?
Hi, Rick! So glad to hear that my video was helpful to you. Please let me know how your bed turns out. Chalk paint is a great project for head and foot boards, IMO. 😃As for the font, do you mean the cursive font? If so, it's called Hastage. I was afraid that it might be hard to read, but it looks so artistic to me, so I was drawn to it.
Love the review, however, I have not had the same experience with Annie Sloan paint. I find the coverage terrible and it easily peels off. I bought 3 small cans. I am going to keep experimenting because even though I followed directions, I am thinking I may have done something wrong. I am not fond of the wax either so far.
I have tried a few chalk paint brands and I’m always crawling back to Annie Sloan. To be fair, Rustoleum chalk paint I have not tried. Very informative video.👍
Aw, thanks so much for watching! I'm really glad you found this video informative. Annie Sloan is definitely the chalk paint queen. The only drawback to her paint, in my opinion, is the price, but even that doesn't bother me too much because a little bit of paint goes far. But yes, the Rustoleum is a good product! I am very happy with how my bookshelf turned out. Hope you have an excellent week, and thanks again!😃😃😃
MissJustinaMarie I don’t like the price either, however, I’m willing to pay for a quality product. Sometimes I purchase the Annie Sloan small paint pots and mix with some of the quart size paint to make my own custom colors. I love her paint and I hope to paint something new soon. It’s yard sale season so I will be on the lookout for some TLC pieces to paint. You have a great week too!
Yes, indeed! She makes such a great product that the price doesn’t hinder me from continuing to purchase. I just found you on IG in hopes I can follow along in your furniture projects this spring and summer! 🤗 👩🏻🎨
MissJustinaMarie Yeah!! I’m so happy you’re following me on IG!! I’m not a “frequent” poster and I post random things about food, nature and everyday things going on in my life. Hopefully I can create a “paint” channel on YT someday. I love your IG page and followed as well. You have a good eye for beautiful home decor style.
Justine, you took the words right out of mouth describing these two brands! I would say if I'm doing a small craft project, I would use Rustoleum, but on a large vintage furniture piece, I reach for Annie Sloan or Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint every time! Overall, for a big piece or several pieces, you would spend thr same amount of $$ buying Rustoleum because you need at least two cans! :(
Hi, Nicole! 🧡 Thank you very much for your feedback. It's very helpful to know that you had the same experience with the Rustoleum brand. I've never tried Miss Mustard Seed. I will have to add that to my list of paints I'd like to try. Thank you!
That's a great suggestion, thank you, Kelley! I've had other requests for Dixie Belle so I'm definitely going to give that a try next once I finish up my can of Rustoleum. Hope you have a lovely weekend! ❤️
When I use Rustoleum chalk paint my furniture always has paint/brush stroke lines. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve tried multiple types of brushes even. Does your furniture get these lines? They look so smooth on the videos. I’ve never used Annie Sloan.
Ive just tried rustoleum chalk paint having already used Annie Sloan and not been impressed with the finish. I thought I would try again but it’s left a streaky. Finish and after waxing it’s still not even despite following all he instructions
Looking for a really nice off white chalk paint color....can you. Suggest a color?? Would be for a four poster bed and dresser . Thank you. Love your channel
Hi, Cathy! Thank you so much, I’m delighted to know that you’re enjoying my channel. 🤗💕 I used Rustoleum’s chiffon cream on a bookcase in my son’s playroom. It is a lovely warm white, but not yellowy. My husband and I love the color. I did a video tutorial about if you want to see how it turned out. You may also like to look at a new-ish luxury paint company called Jolie paint. It is a rival to Annie Sloan. They have several whites...Gesso would give you a cool undertone, Antique will give a warm, ivory undertone. I hope that helps!😘
I tried the Lowe’s chalk paint and although the piece turned out looking ok, I didn’t care for it. What would happen if you tinted the rustoleum chalk paint? Thank you for sharing ☺️💕 I have used Annie Sloan and like that product a lot but I don’t live in a metro area so it’s hard to get.
Hi, Robin!💕 Ah, yes, that is the major challenge with Annie Sloan - it's not readily available to everyone, which is unfortunately because it's such an amazing product. I haven't tried the brand Lowe's carries. Is it Valspar? You know, I'm not a huge fan of their regular paint, so I'm not surprised to learn that you didn't like their chalk paint. As for tinting Rustoleum's Chalk Paint - I have not tried this, but I know for sure that Annie Sloan is always mixing her paints together to achieve custom colors. I would say, you definitely would want to tint it with another chalk paint, not regular latex or anything like that. But I don't see how mixing different chalk paint brands together would hurt. Perhaps try a test batch in a small container and see how it works out? That would be a great way to get some different colors out of Rustoleum's very affordable brand, as their color selection is super limited. Thank you so much for watching, Robin! Really glad to hear that you liked the video! XO.☺️☺️☺️
MissJustinaMarie Thank you so much for your help! What I meant by tinting was to have the paint counter add tint there so it would just be a few drops of tint. That way the product isn’t altered too much. I may go ahead and try this and I will let you know what I think! I love repurposing pieces. Older stuff is usually made better and is more interesting. That way you have a custom piece! Thank you!
Robin S that sounds great! What a good idea. Yes, please let know how this works out. Sounds like that could absolutely be a wonderful way to achieve a custom color.
MissJustinaMarie I did try it! I tinted the white and it was really dark so the tint oozed over 😳. What I would do next time if I wanted a dark color is to pour some out first and then tint it. The tinting did not seem to affect the finish and I liked it WAY BETTER than the Lowe’s stuff I bought!
Hi, Sarah! Thank you very much for your suggestion. I've been curious about how to make chalk paint but never thought to give it a try myself...but now you have me thinking about it! I'd love to do "a battle of the chalk paints" video sometime...I just need to find furniture to paint! LOL Hope you have a great weekend!
beautiful work! i have 1 question....why are there so many how to videos using annie sloan chalk paint? is there some sort of incentive involved for using her products? If so, where do I sign up? I'll make a good video for some free (expensive) chalk paint
Hi, J.J! Thank you for your compliment about my video. As for asking whether or not this video is sponsored, no it is not. I'm not sponsored by any companies, as I have a small channel. If, in the future, I am ever blessed to receive a sponsorship, I would disclose it openly. I make TH-cam videos to help people make their homes beautiful affordably and share information, tips, and tricks I've picked up after 15 years of homeownership. (I bought my first home at age 25.) Now, as for your question as to why so many TH-camrs, bloggers, etc. use Annie Sloan, it's quite a simple explanation. Annie Sloan is the originator of chalk paint. She invented it! Every other chalk paint brand is based off her her success and her formula. I agree that it is expensive paint, which is precisely why I created this video. I know that not everybody is able to afford such expensive paint, and there aren't many videos comparing AS to other, newer, and more affordable chalk paint brands. The only incentive I've ever received for using Annie Sloan chalk paint is that it's AWESOME chalk paint and I've always managed to achieve excellent results. That's it. Hope that clears some things up for you, J.J. Have a good night!
Theres a trend that people are using chalk paint of leather sofas?! Have you tried using it on leather? & whats the difference between acrylic paint vs chalk paint on leather if u do know. Tyyyy!!!
Diana, hi! I never used it on leather thought I have tried it on fabric, and it gives the fabric a smooth, almost leather-like finish. I’ve seen a pair of leather boots that were chalk painted and they looked great! I found for you a blog post with detailed instructions on how to paint leather. I can’t vouch for it, but it seems like a thorough explanation: piorramaison.blogspot.com/2014/04/painting-leather-with-chalk-paint.html?m=1 Good luck!☺️🙌🏼
Just found your channel and thank you for the review I wanted to give chalk paint a try so I just bought some wood pieces at Michaels the only chalk paint they had was Martha Stewart well it was so thick not sure if it was bad or what but it was like glue lol than went to Walmart and got some Ashley and that was better. Now I don’t know what the heck I’m doing and I painted a piece than put wax than antique wax on it looked fine except I was going to make a sign with either vinyl or stencil did not know once you wax you can’t paint over it Have a lot to learn
Hi, Norine! 💕Thank you so much for stopping by my channel and saying HI! So you've entered the exciting world of chalk paint...that's great! I hope you will enjoy using it. One of the things I love about chalk paint is that you can repaint over it, re-wax it, paint over the wax, etc. I recently put a fresh coat of white on my chalk-painted dining room table, which I finished with wax, and had no trouble painting right over the wax. Another great thing about chalk paint is if you mess up, just paint over it and start anew! I learned a lot about chalk paint by visiting Annie Sloan's website and blog. She is very informative. And of course, I'm happy to answer your questions, too! I hope my thoughts above are helpful to you in moving forward with your stencil design. Please let me know how it turns out!
Great review! Thank you! I got a great deal on two tables and want to use chalk paint. I just have to figure out the best sealer product to protect surface in busy house with two young children
Oh, you're very welcome! I'm in a similar situation as you - I have a 2 year old son who is very busy. That said, I would suggest polycrylic because of the low toxicity but superior durability. I have a video that goes into details about all the different sealers. Maybe you would find it to be helpful? But in a nutshell, I say to go with a matte polycrylic. :)
Don't waste your money on Rustoleum! It goes on very patchy, coverage is awful, and when you put the "Top coat" on it actually removes some of the paint underneath! I wish I'd bought Annie Sloan paint, there really is no comparison!!!!
Hi, Katie! Thank you for sharing your opinion. I agree that Annie Sloan is the best of the best, it's just that the price tag is too dear for some. I found the same difficulties with the Rustoleum, but realized that I had to wait until the paint was completely dry before adding coats. For the piece I was painting, the paint seemed to "pull together" in the end, though I was so nervous when applying it because it seemed patchy until it dried. But yes, I totally agree that AS chalk paint is great stuff!
Holy crap an unbiased review with actual good information. Can I like twice?
Where I live (Mississippi) you can’t get Annie Sloan. I’ve bought and used Rustoleum on several projects and I was very pleased with the results.
Hi, Julie! That's so good to hear. I'm glad you also had a positive result with Rustoleum. Seems like some people haven't, but I found that if you follow the application instructions, which are different from AS, it works well!

Rustoleum is available at Loew's now. And they will mix it to any color Lowe's has on a color chip. Hundreds of colors.
Great video. Do you have to put a top coat on chalk paint?

Thank you for all the details. Very useful. In Romania the price difference between the two brands is enormous! AS is 50$ and R is 6$!

Once you have finished each coat go over with very fine sand paper. Takes out the brush marks, you're looking for 240grit or higher.

@@MsCurliegirlie That makes a lot of sense! But oh my goodness, I can only imagine what went through your mind when you saw that paint oozing over!!!
Nice review! Thanks!
Thank you, Caron!🤗🤗🤗
please can you try DIY chalk paint!
Hi, Sarah! Thank you very much for your suggestion. I've been curious about how to make chalk paint but never thought to give it a try myself...but now you have me thinking about it! I'd love to do "a battle of the chalk paints" video sometime...I just need to find furniture to paint! LOL
Hope you have a great weekend!
beautiful work! i have 1 question....why are there so many how to videos using annie sloan chalk paint? is there some sort of incentive involved for using her products?
@@MissJustinaMarie thank you so much for your thorough response. Much appreciated.
This was sooooo helpful. Thank you!!!
You’re welcome, Shannon! 🤗🙌🏼
I can’t vouch for it, but it seems like a thorough explanation:

Good luck!☺️🙌🏼
@@MissJustinaMarie omg ty so much! Ur amazing! Ty ty!
Thank you so much
Just found your channel and thank you for the review I wanted to give chalk paint a try so I just bought some wood pieces at Michaels the only chalk paint they had was Martha Stewart well it was so thick not sure if it was bad or what but it was like glue lol than went to Walmart and got some Ashley and that was better.
Rustoleum chalk paint in Canada is $38.00!!! Just bought 😭
MissJustinaMarie Thank you for your very helpful response 👍🏼
I’ve never used Annie Sloan chalk paint, how does it compare to waverly chalk paint
Hi, Lisa! I have not used Waverly paint, I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion. 😁🙏🏼
I just bought Rust-Oleum Chiffon cream 5 $ off both my paint 14 dollars each :)
Awesome!!! 🤩🙌🏼🥳
What do you think of Rustoleum vs. General Finishes Chalk Paint ?
My sister bought me Any Howard's milk paint for Christmas .
Ooooh, how FUN! What are you going to paint???☺️
Kilz also has chalk paint. I thought it was better than Rustoleum. Annie Sloan is better quality. Hands down its great stuff!
Hi, Sandra! Thank you very much for the Kilz recommendation. I will def check it out! Hope you have a great rest of the week. 💛💛💛
The rustolium chalk paint can be tinted.
Good to know! THANK YOU!
